STEVE MARTIN AND ALEC BALDWIN TO HOST OSCAR SHOW,

SUNDAY, MARCH 7, 2010 ON ABC

Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin will serve as co-hosts of the 82nd Academy Awards®, Oscar telecast producers Bill Mechanic and Adam Shankman announced today.

“We think the team of Steve and Alec are the perfect pair of hosts for the Oscars,” said Shankman and Mechanic. “Steve will bring the experience of having hosted the show in the past and Alec will be a completely fresh personality for this event.”

“I am happy to co-host the Oscars with my enemy, Alec Baldwin,” said Martin.

“I don’t play the banjo, but I’m thrilled to be hosting the Oscars – it’s the opportunity of a lifetime,” said Baldwin.

Martin hosted the 73rd and 75th Academy Awards shows, earning an Emmy nomination for the first stint. He has also served as a presenter on the show several times, most recently at the ceremony in February when he appeared with Tina Fey. He is currently touring with the bluegrass band Steep Canyon Rangers in support of his latest album, “The Crow: New Songs for the Five String Banjo.” In 1977 and 1978 Martin won Grammys for Best Comedy Recording. He earned a third Grammy in 2001 in the Best Country Instrumental Performance category. In 2007 Martin earned a Kennedy Center Honor.

Baldwin was nominated for an Academy Award in 2003 for his supporting role in “The Cooler.” That year also marked his most recent appearance as a presenter on the show. Baldwin currently stars as Jack Donaghy on the comedy “30 Rock,” a role for which he has won two Emmys (in 2008 and 2009). He earned a Tony nomination in 1992 for his performance in “A Streetcar Named Desire.”

Academy Awards for outstanding film achievements of 2009 will be presented on Sunday, March 7, 2010, at the Kodak Theatre at Hollywood & Highland Center®, and televised live by the ABC Television Network. The Oscar presentation also will be televised live in more than 200 countries worldwide.

Okay choices. I thought they would join the bandwagon and get NPH too haha

  2. johnthemon says:

cool, love Steve Martin, and Alec Baldwin is an okay choice too.

  3. romo says:

Will they do a “2 wild & crazy guys” skit ?

  4. Mike says:

Where was it that I read that the odds makers had Steve Martins chances of hosting very low? I thought the odds maker was giving Billy Crystal the edge…

I wonder what co-hosting does to the Vegas odds!

I find this show just too long for me and usually only watch bits and pieces of it while watching other stuff.

I do think that Steve Martin and Alex Baldwin could make a very funny team.

  5. Mike says:

Ok I went and found it

Steve Martin was 25 to 1….So what does that do if he co-hosts and you had some $$$ riding on this!

  6. Jeremy says:

Why couldn’t Tina Fey host it? I also would have liked Conan. Steve is not that funny anymore, and Baldwin doesn’t strike me as Oscar host material.

  7. Sue Maple says:

Even though I like each of them just fine….it seems like a kind of boring selection to me. A woman would have been fun.

  8. Jose says:

After Steve Martin and Tina Fey did a great job presenting the screenwriting categories last time, they were my picks to host the show.

    I was close.

  9. CK says:

Odd pairing. The writers have their work cut for them.

  10. Rich says:

I was hoping they would stay away from someone with a tendancy to talk politics such as Alec Baldwin….

  11. William Hughes says:

If my calculations are correct, omce again most, if not all of this years Blockbusters will get snubbed again in favor of some Obscure, Foreign-Made Movies, played in only a few select Theatres in NY and LA at years end, that will be nominated instead. If this is so, I’ll be watching other things come Oscar Night.

  12. Scott Jensen says:

Nothing really against either but couldn’t they pick a couple younger people?

  13. Adam says:

I don’t think I’ll tune into 4 hours of liberal socialist commentary from Alex Baldwin and awards given for political purposes (milk)

  14. Andrea says:

    William Hughes,

So are you saying that “Transformers 2″ and “Angels & Demons” should be up for best picture?

  15. dave c. says:

Well they did double the number of best picture nominees, so it only makes sense that they had to double number of hosts too.

Whats your guess on how quickly they make that joke or a variation of it in the broadcast?

Now I rarely agree with the academy’s nominations, but they’re only going to stop “snubbing” big budget studio fare when big budget studio fare starts being good. The Dark Knight wasn’t that good(Iron Man was better and that didn’t deserve a nomination either). Pixar snubs have less to do with their blockbuster status than their animated status. Now if only the academy didn’t fall in love with every mediocre holocaust film(The Reader) or below average biopic(Benjamin Button). I also wish the academy respected comedies.

  16. Bloomsday says:

“I am happy to co-host the Oscars with my enemy, Alec Baldwin,” said Martin.

    Steve Martin is the man.
