ABC’s “V” Opens Big – #1 New TV Show of the Season

V 2009

Some Nielsen ratings highlights via ABC:

Opposite stiff established original competition in Tuesday’s 8 o’clock hour, including CBS’ top-rated NCIS, NBC’s Biggest Loser and Fox’s So You Think You Can Dance, ABC’s V opened a strong #1 in Adults 18-49, soaring to the top of its slot and leading second-place CBS’ NCIS by 19% (5.0/13 vs. 4.2/11).

In fact despite its early time period with lower overall viewing levels and with no network lead-in, self-starter V stood as Tuesday’s #1 TV program overall in the key young adult sales demo and as the season’s highest-rated new series debut this TV Season.   In a good sign for future viewing the new ABC drama generated tune-in throughout its premiere, growing in both Total Viewers (13.8 million to 14.1 million) and Adults 18-49 (4.9/13 to 5.1/13) from its first half-hour to its second half-hour.

  • V marked ABC’s strongest performance in the time period among Adults 18-49 in 3 years (any programming) – since 11/14/06.
  • Topping CBS’ spinoff NCIS: LA series debut in September by 14% (5.0/13 vs. 4.4/11 – which had the added advantage of airing out of the season opener of NCIS), V qualifies as the top-rated Tuesday night fall series debut among Adults 18-49 on any network since 2005 and ABC’s highest since 2003 – since 9/20/05 and since 9/23/03, respectively.
  • V opened with the highest Adult 18-49 rating for a regular 8pm drama debut (any net/any night) since ABC’s Lost on 9/22/04.

V is a kicker show! The analogies to the obummer administration is right on!

    2. cool says:

      that was fast!

    3. X-R.G. says:

and…Middle Tennessee missed out >>> thank you Jeff Fisher and your weekly lame – interview show…cow-poke Tennessee strikes again :(

    4. Dan says:

Id say keep V on Tuesdays at 8 and air Lost at 9 tuesdays. Pairing the two would work out well.

    5. R.G says:

I hope V does well, it looked like a perfect TV show.

Looks like CBS needs to move the NCIS shows to another day of the week…

    6. Dan, perhaps ABC should completely rejigger the way it programs Dancing With the Stars, at this point. But I wouldn’t expect to see it happen for the “spring” session. I can’t see them running the results show at 10pm or on any other day besides Tuesdays. I also don’t see them putting results show against NCIS.

    7. Carmen says:

I watched the original V and i was excited for this remake. It was great and I wanted more, I cant wait for next weeks episode.

    8. John says:

I was shocked by these results. I picked V to be a dud.

    9. JG_nycChop says:

i was hopping it did well cuz i like everyone involved but had a feeling it would bomb, hapilly surprised…lets hope it doesnt fall off as much as flash forward which i love but am worried about longevity wise if it keeps dropping

    10. Jane says:

Ugly Betty in 2006 opened with a 5.0 at 8 pm..

    11. idizzle says:

      @ R.G.

NCIS has been on Tuesdays forever and the spin off did not even suffer the tiniest bit from a slightly worse lead in this week. Unless CBS finalle gets fed up with the Wednesdays comedies and needs a night starter there, I do not see them moving those shows ever.

      MarsPolarLander = koo koo

    13. Smallville says:

Well John ur a dud…. I saw it last night i thought it was pretty good i just wish we didnt have to wait till march to watch it again after these 4 episodes :(

    14. skylar says:

V was great. I hope this continues.

    15. Cody says:

You would expect those analogies coming from FOX but ABC and WB WTC.

    16. Lucky says:

Like I said a few weeks ago on this site, ABC should pair V and Lost on Tuesday night. Moving the Dancing results show to Weds with Modern Family and Cougar Town would actually give them a fighting chance for the night against AI. Move Bros & Sis to Weds at 10 and start up the marketing for a new show after DH on Sun where the comp will be weak after football is over.

    17. Kam says:

A great opening for a very good show (so far at least), Considering these numbers and depending on the next three episodes performances ABC should seriously consider not going into hiatus (at least not so long) as a three month lay off could seriously damage an otherwise promising show.

    18. forg says:

I’m so glad it exceeded my expectations, because I was predicting it would only get a 3.1 at best. I hope they can keep it up

    19. Dan says:

Too bad V is taking a 4 month break after its 4th ep.

    20. Tommy says:

The 4 month break might not hurt the show as bad as everyone is predicting. If they end episode 4 with a big cliffhanger, and then do a similar promotional campaign like the one they did for the premiere I can see it doing ok.

    21. on the heels of the premieres’ success the “ABC treatment of V” finger pointing has already begun by TV columnists. See:

ABC’s remake of V debuted Tuesday to 14.3-million viewers. So why is the network treating it like a loser? http://tinyurl.com/yjqc2ss

    22. Dan says:

Shows like Jericho, Lost and Heroes didnt benefit from the cliffhangers and season breaks. Thats why Lost, 24, and Heroes now run straight through. Lets hope V does well when it returns.

    23. Bill Gorman says:

Not only finger pointing, but that article contained a blizzard of incorrect information. Such is the TV columnist business!

    24. William says:

The show seemed to go a bit too fast through the storyline. I wonder if the show’s premiere was to be two hours and condensed to one hour. You really don’t know that much about Anna or the visitors.

    25. ABCFanatic2009 says:

      YAY! New hit for ABC!!!

    26. Dan says:

V premiering well doesnt give good news for Eastwick or Forgotten. Thr axe can swing at any time for either series.

    27. Bad News says:

I am from the old school of V, and own the complete DVD collection. Tuesdays episode was so bad that I will not be watching again. The story started out loosely following the story then, then turned it in to a hybrid of Sleeper Cell and Battlestar Galactic with elements of Numbers. For prime time I cant believe that cancelled shows like Moonlight, the Unit and 4400, for this over CGI’ed show if they had kept to the original script, with the latest Special Effects it could have been a fantastic show, instead of another over rated over price “B” rated SI-FI.
