Quick Take for Wednesday, November 4, 2009

(Fast Affiliate Live + Same Day Ratings)

Surging from its Lead-in by 43%, “The Middle” Finishes as the No. 1

Non-Sports Show in its Half-Hour for the 2nd Straight Week in Adults 18-49

Beating its Non-Sports Competition at 9pm, ABC’s “Modern Family” is

Wednesday’s No. 1 TV Series in Adults 18-49 for the 2nd Week in a Row

“Cougar Town” is the Top Series at 9:30pm with Adults 18-34 and Key Men

At 10pm, ABC’s “Eastwick” Beats “NBC’s “Leno” for the 3rd Straight Week

Among Adults 18-49, Leading by an Even Wider Margin of 23% This Week

“The Middle” (8:30-9:00 p.m.)

Jumping from its lead-in by 43% in Adults 18-49 at 8:30 p.m., for the 2nd week in a row against Fox’s World Series coverage, ABC’s “The Middle” finished as the No. 1 non-sports TV show in its half-hour in Adults 18-49 (2.0/5-tie).  The new ABC comedy was also the top series in the half-hour with key Men: M18-34 (1.3/4) and M18-49 (1.7/5).

“Modern Family” (9:00-9:30 p.m.)

Shooting up from its lead-in by 70% in Adults 18-49, ABC’s “Modern Family” beat out its non-sports competitors at 9:00 p.m. to qualify as the No. 1 TV series of the night for the 2nd straight week (3.4/9).

  • “Modern Family” is exhibiting big increases over its first-reported numbers through DVR playback, jumping by 1.2 million viewers and by an additional 6-tenths of an Adult 18-49 rating point from the initially reported Live + Same Day Numbers to the Live + 7 Day DVR finals.

“Cougar Town” (9:30-10:00 p.m.)

ABC’s “Cougar Town” finished No. 2 against its non-sports competition at 9:30 p.m. in Adults 18-49 (2.7/7) to the second-half of CBS’ “Criminal Minds.”  Against the World Series, the ABC freshman placed as the No. 1 series telecast in the time period with Adults 18-34 (2.5/7-tie), Men 18-49 (2.2/6-tie) and among hard-to-reach Men 18-34 (1.9/6).

  • Like its lead-in, “Cougar Town” is producing sizeable gains over its first-reported numbers through DVR playback, increasing by 1.1 million viewers and by an additional 5-tenths of an Adult 18-49 rating point from the initially reported Live + Same Day Numbers to the Live + 7 Day DVR finals.

“Eastwick” (10:00-11:00 p.m.)

ABC’s “Eastwick” continued to beat NBC’s “Jay Leno” in the 10 o’clock hour (3 weeks in a row), leading by an even wider margin of 23% this week among Adults 18-49 (1.6/4 vs. 1.3/4).

  • “Eastwick” is seeing bumps from the first-reported numbers through DVR playback, averaging an additional 1.0 million viewers and a 4-tenths of an Adult 18-49 rating point increase from the initially reported Live + Same Day Numbers to the Live + 7 Day DVR finals.

A note about increasing DVR penetration and year-to-year rating comparisons: Year-to-year rating comparisons based on the Live + Same Day data stream are distorted by the level of DVR penetration in the Nielsen sample, which has jumped up to 33% currently, from 28% at the same point in 2008. More viewers are watching shows on their own timetables, which may not be reflected in the overnight next day numbers. The only truly valid year-to-year comparison would be one based on the Live + 7 Day metric, once those stats are released by Nielsen.

  1. jen says:

    what about HANK?

  2. mark-allen says:

come on…hank couldn’t have done that badly…could it?

  3. Junior G. says:

I watched the Hank pilot, lets just say it wasn’t good. I watched The Middle and Modern Family, and I’m hooked on both! The middle is so funny! They exaggerate sometimes, but that makes it even funnier, and Modern Family is so far the best new show this season other than V. For some reason I always ask, but Robert have you watched The Middle or Modern Family yet?

  4. I’ve seen most of the Modern Family episodes. I only saw the premiere of the Middle.

  5. Julia says:

I’ve watched all of both, for some reason. I’m mostly torturing myself with The Middle. It’s just not that good.

  6. come on…hank couldn’t have done that badly…could it?

It was beaten by the CW.

  7. Liban A says:

I wish more people would just watch Cougar Town after Modern Family… stick around! It’s hillarious!

  8. Gusar says:

I agree with Liban, Cougar Town is hilarious. So is Eastwick, though Eastwick is cheesy-hilarious. I hope both shows stick around, but while Cougar Town has a real chance (I’m sure it’ll bounce back once baseball is over), Eastwick will need a miracle.

  9. Adam says:

I was forced by a friend to watch Modern Family and Cougar Town last night. They weren’t as bad as I thought they’d be, but I still think the days of the half hour comedy are over.

  10. Haeja says:

Last night’s show was great. The plot are getting more and more interesting each week. Introducing more story line about the Cybil Shepherd and Veronica Cartright characters makes me want to see what’s coming next. How do they impact the other girls? More people need to watch this show. It is keeping and growing the audience it does have and with out any promotional effort on ABC’s part, but needs some support to keep it going.

  11. Haeja says:

Oops…I was commenting on Eastwick in case anyone was wondering. I think Cougar Town is a terrible show and sends a very bad message about women and relationships.

  12. James says:

“Cougar Town” is, and always will be, a piece of hyena dung. Its far too manic in style and the acting/line-delivery is downright horrendous. Courteney Cox, usually quite a terrific actress (well, more so with drama, she tries too hard with comedy now and then) doesn’t convince; Busy Phillips is a cartoon; Christa Miller can’t move her face; Bryan Van Holt is like a bad MadTV sketch; only Josh Hopkins, as the neighbor across the street, and more so Dan Byrd, as her teenage son, provide any sort of leverage. Byrd, in particular, is quite a gifted comic actor. It’s practically effortless–he just nails every line. He’s the bright spot on each show. But I wish him a much, much better series.

“Hank” and “Eastwick” are just lame. But while “Eastwick” is cute lame, “Hank” simply has no excuse. I suspect they aren’t announcing cancellation so soon just to be nice. Once its episodes run out, it’s almost certainly kaput. I just hope the network sees how many people switch channels after “Modern Family” (amazing, hilarious) when “Cougar Town” is on; similarly, I hope ABC recognizes how many people tune into their network for “The Middle” (which is great and should be paired with “Modern Family” ASAP), and stay tuned in until “Modern Family” is over. Then, pair those two shows with “Better Off Ted” and “Scrubs”, and you’ve got gold.

  13. Mike says:

The middle is my absolute favorite new comedy by a mile! I think the young boy is pure comic genius! Too bad that following Hank is killing it.

Move the middle to after modern family and watch it’s ratings. I have not even bothered to DVR cougar town anymore in spite of gorgeous Courtney Cox.

  14. James says:

Cox is looking pretty foxy, and this is coming from a homo. Still, her beauty and the hotness of the neighbor are not enough to keep me around with that painful acting (although if the tone were adjusted, I guess the scripts are okay).

I’m glad you’re another fan of “The Middle”, Mike! Brick is one of my favorite characters this season, as well =). It does pretty well, despite following “Hank”. But they really need to give it a better lead-in, stat. I feel that they might give it another shot, especially since they gave “Better Off Ted” a second season, but I’m still freaking nervous.

  15. Riff Rafferty says:

When they can find something nice to say about “Eastwick’s” performance and can’t find something nice to say about yours, you know the end is certainly near…

  16. The Punisher says:

If you people watch this trash then Lord help you. Shallow doesn’t even come close to the word that discribes you!

  17. James says:

All of it, The Punisher? Or just “Eastwick” and “Cougar Town”.

    Please, share the lulz.

  18. forg says:

Poor Kelsey Grammer, as a Frasier fan, I’m sad to see how Kelsey is performing poorly on his new.

I like the the 3 sitcoms of ABC. I miss family sitcoms and Modern Family & The Middle are doing a good job. Cougar Town is guilty pleasure fun but I understand why some people are turned off by the show’s tackiness. Anyway, Cougar’ Town’s number will probably rise again nexr plus the upcoming guesting of Lisa Kudrow will help the show.

I’m glad that Modern Family is clicking to the audience :)

  19. James says:

It’s not the tackiness for me; I like the premise and the goofiness (since the “Scrubs” guy, Bill Lawrence”, created it, it has a similar tone)–but it just isn’t executed well at all by the cast, writers, or directors. They need to learn SOME subtlety.

  20. Tony says:

The Middle is my favorite abc comedy and then modern family and cougar town are tied for second and I can’t even make it through one episode of Hank.

  21. jack says:

    The middle and cougartown rock!

    Hank sucks.

    Its That simple.

    Jack

  22. Darrin says:

The Middle is the real Modern Family.
