For most broadcast shows, exile to Friday means your network thinks the show is past its time, and should peacefully fade away without damaging the ratings of shows on Sunday-Thursday. That’s likely the idea that the CW had when it put Smallville on Fridays this season. But defying conventional wisdom (and to many fans, the wishes of CW chief Dawn Ostroff), not only has Smallville refused to go quietly, it was tied for second best adults 18-49 rating on the CW last week. I know that the CW targets women 18-34, but be certain they sell advertising based on whatever attractive demo ratings they get. Those results cannot be ignored.
With Melrose Place the only show currently in the CW lineup certain to be canceled, fans await the return of Heather Locklear as potential salvation. Dream on.
I realize that with an Index of 0.82 Gossip Girl 90210 wouldn’t be “green” for any other network, but its women’s 18-34 ratings are above average for the CW (unfortunately we don’t get the same level of data for that demo for me to be able to easily use it). That, plus the fact that show’s the televised embodiment of everything Dawn Ostroff has staked her network on, guarantees it will be around as long as Dawn is.
*I have frozen The Beautiful Life’s Index at its value the week of cancellation.
This is a breakdown of CW scripted shows and their renewal and cancellation prospects. Here are links to the other networks:
-
Notes:
The Renew/Cancel Index is a show’s Season To Date adults 18-49 rating divided by its network’s Season to Date average 18-49 rating. If a show’s season to date 18-49 ratings average equalled its network’s 18-49 average, the show would have an Index of 1.00. Without special factors, scripted shows that were more than 10% below their network’s average are typically canceled by the end of the broadcast primetime season.
Factors that could cause a show to be renewed with well below average index:
- (F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays have been renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.
- (S) – Syndication: Shows nearing syndication (66-88 episodes), often have economic factors that trump ratings leading to renewal.
- (T) – Third Party: Shows that have a portion of their cost underwritten by a 3rd party can be renewed with substantially lower ratings.
- (P) – Produced by the network’s production company – For shows on the bubble, being produced by the network’s corporate production company can be a survival advantage. For real losers, it’s unlikely to help.
While I initially tried to designate shows with “plum” timeslots, I think that’s hard to make that call at this point in the season. It’s likely still a factor, but will have to be an “after the fact” call.
What’s the History of the Index and How Did It Do In the Past? Check out the results from the 2007-8 season and the 2008-9 season.

Good for Smallville. I wonder how the show will do when Pam Grier guest stars as Amanda Waller. I wonder how the CW will promote that.
I’m enjoying this season of Smallville a lot more than the Doomsday arc of last season.
Also, excellent title for this post!
The .82 index is for 90210, not Gossip Girl.
If Melrose cancels, Im 2 for 2 since Eastwick just cancelled.
All i’ll have left are ABC comedies Modern Family and The Middle.
I don’t watch or follow Smallville’s ratings, but why exactly was it moved to Fridays? Were the ratings bad or start to decline in its regular time slot? I’m just really curious as to how Dawn Ostroff’s thought process works.
rob, you are correct. I will fix the post.
I haven’t watched Smallville for 4 seasons but I really enjoy season 9. It’s so much fun! I really hope Smallville gets a season 10.
@grr_argh: my understanding of the switch from Thursdays to Fridays was to usher in the new show The Vampire Diaries. The new show would die on Fridays, and is a good fit with Supernatural (both shows about monsters and the paranormal). The hope was that Smallville would still pull decent numbers so that CW could have some sort of ratings presence on Friday. So far the gambit has seemed to work out for them, The Vampire Diaries is a huge hit for the network, and Smallville’s audience keeps growing each week. All in all, I’m not a huge fan of the CW, but in this instance I think they made the right call. Now if only they’d put something other than America’s Next Top Model repeats on after Smallville they might have a solid Friday night lineup.
wasn’t Reaper in the green zone last season, we know how that turned out?
thanks Packy. I just thought Ostroff wanted to cancel the show but the ratings from Smallville wouldn’t justify the act. Therefore, she brewed up this brilliant plan by condemning Smallville to the friday night death slot. Guess that didn’t work out for her.
Supernatural and Vampire Diaries only share the most superficial of compatibilities. I really don’t think they share the same fanbase as Supernatural and Smallville did.
Bill why are you being so bias towards smallville? she show needs to end already.
Well using Travis (who has provided for all shows still producing new episodes the final numbers with both a18-34 and w18-34) numbers you can see a very different picture for the CW.
These are the raw numbers and not converted (like you do for your comparison) nor do they reflect reruns or Encore Performances).
Current average based on a18-49
Vampire Diaries 1.79
Top Model 1.52
Supernatural 1.25
Gossip Girls 1.15
One Tree Hill 1.14
90210 1.11
Smallville 1.04
Melrose Place 0.78
Same Shows (all originals) but using Adults 18-34
Vampire Diaries 1.99
Top Model 1.72
Gossip Girls 1.70
90210 1.55
One Tree Hill 1.53
Supernatural 1.36
Smallville 1.11
Melrose Place 1.04
Then we have want the CW states is their target Demo the W18-34 (again only originals)
Vampire Diaries 2.84
Gossip Girls 2.74
Top Model 2.63
90210 2.33
One Tree Hill 2.28
Supernatural 1.50
Melrose Place 1.44
Smallville 1.08
What surprises me is that Gossip Girl is doing better in that target demo then Top Model, and that 90210 is ahead of One Tree Hill (though that is very close).
But using adults 18-49 really doesn’t paint an accurate picture especially for Supernatural (A show I love) or Smallville. Both are doing considerable worse in the eyes of what the CW is targeting.
mark wood, What the CW aspires to target, and what it makes money selling advertising on (and may very well base its renewal decisions on) are potentially two very different things.
@chrisjozo: I agree completely, I was simply regurgitating an article I had read many months ago. I essentially paraphrased what Dawn said, and added a little commentary of my own. I think Supernatural would benefit greatly from having Smallville partnered up with it again, however; I don’t think Supernatural would be as resiliant as Smallville has been on Fridays. The other problem is that The Vampire Diaries doesn’t fit anywhere else in their schedule, and it certainly would have crashed and burned on Friday had it premiered and stayed there. The only choice was to partner it with Smallville or Supernatural. Smallville was the only show of the 2 that had any chance of surviving Fridays on the CW. Again, I’m not the CW’s biggest fan at all, but I do understand their scheduling decision.
Bill
Oh I know that why I used wording like “What the CW says it’s targeting”.
For the sake of the renewal index, I pretty much agree with the results, just not the comparison using the Adults 18-49.
And I actually liked the idea (on paper) of Smallville going to Friday (the mistake was not having real lead out programming). As the CW has enjoyed success with WWE. But unlike WWE, Smallville does have a female audience (well more so then WWE) and as a product produced by one of the partners of the CW generates off network revenue, WWE had nothing besides its network run that would benefit the CW).
Though I think you should do an index on whether you believe the CW will be around next season.
love smallville, but even there midseason replacments arent anything special, and i cant see them doing any better then the melrose timeslot
Smallville really has been a lot of fun this year.
Frankly we have no idea how Supernatural would do on Friday (at 8pm) or how Smallville would do on Thursdays at 9pm.
Smallville never aired in the more competitive 9pm slot during a normal season (it has a handful of times over the years had a rerun in that time period and those reruns did roughly the same as Supernaturals reruns of the week before or the week after, except during the holidays when it was considerable lower but that is typical).
And Supernatural has only aired on Friday once (during its original run on the WB when they aired an episode a night of Supernatural). But that was during the Holiday rerun period, and 5 years ago, so very hard to judge).
Supernatural has aired more (though still little to base comparisons) times at 8pm 1 rerun during Feb sweeps in season 3 (where it outperformed Smallville;s rerun average to that date and it faced increased competition due to Idol) and it aired 5 times this summer with reruns that not only beat Smallville Thursday at 8pm Summer rerun average, but 4 of them beat any Smallville Summer rerun).
So with what little data we have of the performance between Smallville and Supernatural airing at the same time, the actual facts show that Supernatural performed stronger. While there is precious little data to compare (and why I wont flat out make the claim that Supernatural (at least last year) would have outperformed Smallville if they switched time slots), the data hints that SN might just out perform Smallville.
On paper SN is the better match with VD based on the fact that SN has a more even balance between genders thus making it more likely that VD’s primary audience would stay with the CW.
That didn’t happen (well not to a large degree) and for the last 5 week’s SN audience is leaning (and its just barely) more male then female. Very much like it did with Smallville which I find very, very surprising.
But I am also surprised that Smallville is keeping roughly the same gender percentages on Friday that it had on Thursdays, and Friday’s viewers seem to me more female driven. I didn’t expect that, so that is pleasantly surprising.
The only reason Smallville is seeming to do so good is because all of the other CW programs not having to do with supernatural beings have sucky ratings.
Honestly Plymouth Rock probably won’t get a series order-but the CW should get a brain and realize people watch their sci-fi more than their dramas, and Plymouth Rock is the perfect series for them.
Why do you always come in a Smallville dominated thread and talk about Supernatural? Do you see Smallville fans doing that to Supernatural threads? Oh wait, NO! Just chill out, we get it, you LURVE Supernatural and you think it’s the bees knees!
@ BILL, Good job with the title to
you think of a lot of funny titles.
she is really hot!
@ CHRISJOZO, Yea Pam Grier and Michael Shanks are gonna bring Smallvilles viewers to a new high i bet. I hope they bring back Brian Austin Green as Metallo he was really good. And Serinda Swan as Zatanna is comnig back
@ ERIC (OHIO), i agree this year has so far been better then last year. i liked the whole doomsday thing but i kinda wish they had more of Doomsday and a little less of Davis.
@ Cassi, so u left during season 5? Why? it got better and better. I didnt start watching Smallville till Season 6 episode Justice because my dad never told me about it he watched it since the pilot but he said i was to young
I hate to say it but right now (and i like both Smallville and Supernatural) but i think Smallville may have a better chance of getting renewed then Supernatural because Supernatural is up against greys, office, fringe, and it would be better if they moved Supernatural to right after Smallville on fridays.
@james: This isn’t just a Smallville article. This is an article about ALL CW shows, including Supernatural.
James, I AGREE! lol!
It think that Supernatural ratings declined when the Smallville moved to Fridays. Correct me if i’m wrong
OK, I assume you are referring to me. If not I apologize if so then you really need to pay more attention while reading. My very first post, puts SN down from being #2 on the renew list to nearly last. Hardly someone gloating about How my show is doing so much better.
In fact my first post easily is more positive to all the female driven shows (none of which I like).
But being balance often causes one to be negative towards something one likes.
My 2nd post says how I agree with what show will probable get renewed just that I don’t think using the adults 18-49 is the accurate way of doing it. Again this hurts SN just as much as Smallville, actually more so for SN.
And I argue why SM is a better choice for Friday then WWE has it does help the CW in off network revenue. Nothing negative towards it there.
Again just facts, simple facts.
My third post concerned what Packy brought up, which of the two would be more resiliant on Friday.
I use the only facts that one can use, times when either show aired in the others time slot. Facts, not belief, not feeling. But I even state that while that those facts aren’t enough to make a real claim. Just a hint (my specific words).
@Heradite: I was talking to Mark Wood, he/she finds any article relating to Smallville and rambles on about Supernatural. I can’t believe he is trying to base a show’s ratings prowess based on reruns…….it doesn’t work like that.
I really don’t care what your opinion is on the renewal/cancellation index. I’ll take the opinion of a person in the industry (Bill and Robert) who has his own top 100 internet site over the opinion of a random poster. Sorry, just MY opinion.
Actually if a show is proven to have EXCELLENT rerun episodes, then it can be an influence to renew it. The CW renewed Gossip Girl for it’s second season based on good iTunes sales.
If a show performs decently (or even below average), but reruns better than other series a network might chose to renew it. This is probably one of the reasons Castle and the Forgotten both got more episodes: their procedural and are supposed to do better rerun wise (same with comedies-hence why Better Off Ted was given a leap of faith and renewed). The CW has no rerun-worthy show, except for shows like Smallville and Supernatural (VD has yet to be determined).
So if Supernatural was in the bubble (though it’s numbers indicate otherwise), but it’s reruns were better than the #1 show, then that might lead Supernatural to getting a new season.
Smallville has no danger in getting canceled. It’s getting miraculous ratings on Friday night. Now they need to put a sci-fi show after it and they will be set.
Tino FLux
You are correct the first time this year that SN didn’t have Smallville for a lead in its ratings dropped 30,000 from the week before. Of course after that one week, its ratings increased until the last rerun of the summer.
Of course the flip side is those week’s without Smallville SN performed stronger in the 8pm hour then Smallville had done that whole Summer earlier (not its much Lower Friday numbers but its Thursday 8pm summer reruns numbers).
Smallville highest summer rerun on Thursday was a 1.410 million viewers. Supernaturals highest during that 8pm hour was a 1.690 (its average was higher). During its Thursday at 8pm Summer it had .5 and .4 for adult 18-49, when Supernatural took over that time slot it had adult demos of .7 down to .4 (it averaged higher by a full .1).
What about how it did during 9pm. Before Smallville was moved its highest viewer total was 1.410. After Smallville moved its highest was 1.640 (and it averaged higher). Before Smallville moved its highest demo in Summer was a .5 its lowest a .4. After losing Smallville has a lead in its demo were from a .7 to a .4 (It averaged higher) without Smallville.
Now when the season started you have a whole new set of variables. Thus a comparisons aren’t going to be as accurate, as both time periods have changed. But clearly Supernatural is down.
SN down .605 million viewers
down .14 in adults 18-49
up .1 in adults 18-34
The big drop in viewers is the only factor that really concerns me, but a big part of that is due to the lack of competition SN faced at 9pm last year thanks to the Presidential and Vice Presidential debates and having on week with only Kitchen Nightmares as original competition.
At the 9pm hour, Supernatural highest performance before Smallville moved was a
james, thanks for that vote of confidence, but we’re far from top 100. More like top 3,900.
Is Smallville at the same time on TV as Stargate Universe or not? I think I read somewhere that Smallville is shown from 8-9 pm and Stargate Universe from 9-10 pm. Is that right? I just want to know if they are direct competitors or not. I don’t live in the USA, but I really hope Smallville’s ratings will do well.
Oops, my bad. Still pretty good though, considering all the websites out there. Trust me, I’ll take you guys opinions (good or bad) over some Supernatural crazed poster.
James
Why you seem focused on me seems strange. First I don’t dislike Smallville, and we have several people on these boards calling for the out and out cancellation of the show. Besides SN, Smallville is the only show I watch week to week (and the only other one that I have seen every episode and own them on DVD).
I also both in this thread (a general thread for the CW) and last Friday night thread only brought up Supernatural after others. Both pointing out the pluses and minuses of whatever comparison was being made.
I don’t work in the media industry I work with statistics (which might explain my grammar and spelling) in which one works with numbers without bias. Good or bad no matter the results.
Now on this board I don’t tend to talk about Gossip Girl, One Tree Hill, Melrose Place, Top Model, ect for the most part except for in general trends or comparison to the year ago simply because I don’t care a bit about those shows.
The reasons I talk about Smallville and Supernatural is I like them (well for the most part because they both piss me off at times). I will correct both shows when facts are not given accurately.
Nor do I get mad when someone corrects my info. Nor should I.
James
Excuse me,but to question that sanity of another poster, is highly questionable.
And second, were specifically does what I say contradict what Bill has posted? Please I would love to see where this occurs.
Honestly, I watch Smallville just for Erica Durance. The plots have gotten a little goofy as of late though. Erica Durance…nom nom nom
Yeah, James, you’re kinda coming off as the crazed fan here, not Mark. Just my opinion, of course.
Does this mean the CW is having a good season? Only two of its shows are marked for cancellation at this point. Or is the lack of cancellations more an indication of how low the network has sunk?
In my opinion the CW is doing poorly.
Monday is down in all demos.
90210 is down in both demos.
Melrose Place is performing closely to what Privileged did (worse in 18-49 and I lack 4 weeks of data in the 18-34 for Privileged so I can’t judge that demo)
Top Model is way down in demos
Wednesday at 9pm is down versus Stylista (though not by a large amount).
Thats three nights that are down versus the previous year.
Thursday
VD is up slightly in adults 18-49 and even more so in adults 18-34
SN is down slightly more in adults 18-49 then it is up in adults 18-34
Friday
Smallville is up in adults 18-49 and 18-34 versus The Game and Everybody Hates Chris, is a moderate increase.
Top Model Encore is down just slightly in demos.
So thats 2 hours that are up in demos, one thats close to a wash, and 7 that are down from just slightly to considerable.
I had hoped for better.
I have W 18-34 avgs (8 eps TT, 9 eps MW):
VD 2.83, GG 2.76, Model 2.57, 90210 2.32, One Tree 2.31, Melrose Place 1.65, Supernatural 1.50
Some are pretty close to above numbers, some aren’t as close. Hmm.
Some being Melrose Place.
I’m no ratings genius but Melrose Place is +.01 from last week to a .61 and is stated that we should stick a fork in it cuz its done despite the fact, the show is about to go through a major transition and actually watching tonight I can say its getting better from previous episodes.
Anyways the site runners here say this show will be done at the end of the season but if you click over to the FOX shows, Fringe this week was lower, YES LOWER than M.P. but only states that it is in some danger of being cancelled. I dont get it
Smallville has a really good chance at Season 10 and I hope CW gives it to them. Melrose is likely dead and every other show looks safe for 2010-2011.
To borrow a line from history, “Some see what the CW is and ask why. I see what the CW could be and ask why not.”

Too bad we dont have the power to create our own network with shows that everyone likes.
this season of smallville has been the best in a long time
I couldn’t see why CW don’t move Smallville in the Wednesday 9pm timeslot instead of airing repeats of The Vampire Diaries
@ ABCfan, it’s pretty much holding it’s own on Friday anyway, no need to move it again.
The new show The CW has coming up, Life Unexpected, looks very good. I was surprised it was going to be on The CW…Entertainment Weekly and E! are pimping it pretty hard.
I dont see why Supernatural wont get a season 6. It would most likely be the case the writers and creator decide to end it. Like they are not even sure if they have the material for season 6. Its ratings are good enough to be back so I dont see why not.
BREAKING NEWS!
Smallville’s Society and Legends episodes to be combined into a 2 hour movie event!
http://ausiellofiles.ew.com/2009/11/11/exclusive-smallville-tv-movie-takes-flight/
This show gets better and better…I was hoping it would end – so I don’t have to commit watching more than one show a night on TV…but since Terminator is gone and Dollhouse going bye bye…I truly hope they keep Smallville on Fri’s for a season 10 !!!
I think keeping Smallville on Fridays is turning into “Greatness”…no real threat and pulling more numbers than most shows can on Friday nights…even on other networks (okay except CBS)
…it’s kind of like the guy who accidentally got chocolate in his peanut butter…it turned out to be great!
Smallville into Friday Nights!
I’m one of those that waits for dvd usually, but I got a dvr for the first time a couple months ago so I have all the episodes aired so far for season 9 in waiting while I go through season 8. I just finished the first four episodes of season 8 and I have to say Tess Mercer is the best thing to happen for this show. This actress is a powerhouse. (at least from what I’ve seen so far…)
jackson_h…Thanks much for the scoop – that’s great…Smallville hasn’t had a 2 hour episode since season 5 and normally it’s the season finale of the previous year linked onto the preimere of the new season…this is a first and since it starts in the first hour of primetime…no one should miss the second hour…thanks CW – the smartest thing to do since…well bringing on Smallville 9 years ago…oh wait that was the WB…well…here’s to “firsts”
hoping life unexpected lands its self somewhere between smallville and gossip girl … or higher would be nice … I’ve only seen the extended trailer … and Im already a fan …
Jackson H, That is fricken awsome!! A 2 hour event is like a dream come true the only bad thing is i have to wait for it all december and practically all of janurary…they should air it earlier…I wonder if it will be like 7-9pm or 6-8? since it starts at 7 and ends at 8 usually?
Danny, congratz on the new dvr! if u hadnt already get the 1-7 dvds they are good to. My least favorite season was really season 3 because it was really dark and kinda boring but it got better. And season 8 gets way better after the first 4. My favorite guest star for the season was the Legion/Persuader that was cool
This is so great to hear!! Imagine if they had Smallville followed by Reaper (which got cancelled after last year)…CDub would’ve had the perfect setup for Fridays in my opinion…can’t wait for a Season 10 announcement!
I Don’t get how GG is ahead of 90210 when GG barely pulls in 2mil, and 90210’s ratings are always higher…
Why is it so impossible for you folks to understand that The CW wanted to open up a new ratings “foothold” on Friday nights, and with Vampire Diaries a certain hit & pairing with Supernatural, Smallville was the logical choice to anchor a “new night.” Make no mistake, CW is aware that Smallville has been its #1 or #2 hit each week for years, and its loyal core audience will follow it anywhere it goes. How many other shows can make that claim?
So, stop trying to paint the move so darkly, like Dawn was trying to kill it or something. Nothing could be further from the truth. Is it any coincidence that the network’s top shows—all sci-fi and/or horror type—are placed later in the week, when advertisers love to promote weekend movies and such? All that’s left now, is for CW to find a suitable companion for Smallville on Friday and ditch those ridiculous reruns of Top Model.
SMALLVILLE IS OWNING!
You knew Smallville would pick up steam once Lois and Clark became interested in one-another. WB is getting ready to jump the series from the small screen to the BIG screen. They should get 4 or 5 blockbuster movies out of Tom Welling before he retires the Red tights.
Would be better than anything the Bryan Singer did with Brandon…..what was his last name again? That movie was so unforgetable!
Wow, I thought this was a discussion for all CW shows… Not just Smallville, I didn’t realize this was a Smallville message board.
Personally I think Smallville/Supernatural was a great combo that both shows benefited from each other…
If they keep both shows next year, I would like to see them paired up for a great Friday combo…
Honestly; VD and Supernatural do not share the same audience, and are not that compatible.
I would really love the CW to switch VD and Supernatural around though, if they must keep them together. Supernatural at 8pm VD at 9pm… And see what kind of numbers the night could get.
YAY!! go smallville! good to hear some good news. I’ve enjoyed this season so far, ii’s better than season 8 actually. Anywhoo. i hope supernatural gets another season, as for smallville too.
PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!I know this has nothing to do with the ratings but PLEASE! can some1 tell me what network has bought the reruns of Smallville and Supernatural? Cause Smallville is in season 9 and Supernatural in season 5 dont the network sell the first 4 seasons to rerun on a network? But i cant find them anywhere and i have ask and ask everyone and nobody knows PLEASE SOMEBODY HELP ME!!!!!!!!!
Last I remeber, ABC FAMILY has Smallville, but they haven’t aired it in a couple of years…It was also in Weekend syndication, Fox use to air it on weekends that sports weren’t playing.
Also TheWB.com airs 5 episodes a week, they take 3 down and put 3 new episodes up.
Thank you pete5125 i just cant believe that i cant find Supernatural anywhere because after the 4th season another network will buy the reruns, just like TNT got Charmed and i watch that everyday!
supernatural will more than likely pop up on tnt (or syfy but i say tnt cause of the wb connection) come next year—i think warners was waiting for the show to hit 100 before selling it. the show didn’t have enough eps to sell to reruns at the end of last season. (they only had i think 81 or 82 at that point.)
i am actually kind of curious why smallville doesn’t have a regularly scheduled syndicated run tho—you would think it would be a natural for the early daytime AM hours on TNT where reruns of Angel and Charmed have been running for years now.
Also i can 100% believe that Smallville is doing well on Fridays and i can 100% believe that the pres of the CW must be very happy and very relieved about it because for once they don’t have the albatross of having to program Friday nights around their neck. (but i do wish they could’ve found a way to give another season to Everybody Hates Chris no matter how low rated instead of just letting reruns of Top Model sit there for another year—it was a good show and it would’ve meant immeidate money for paramount thanks to syndication.
then again i also miss repaer–and wonder if ratings for it on friday nights following smallville might not have been as craptacular as originally envisioned–i mean they’d have to have very low expectations given that its friday anyways right? ahh i can dream at least.)
