How will V do for its second episode?

Posted on 10 November 2009 by Robert Seidman

V 2009

My predictions last week stunk and I was off by like 60% with adults 18-49.   Somebody stole my psychic  fortune teller hat and replaced it with a dud!

In its premiere V had a 5.2 rating with adults 18-49 and averaged 14.3 million viewers in the final numbers.

So what do I think will happen tonight?   Well, after my poor showing last week, first we’ll have a guest prediction chime in via “Travis Yanan’s” Twitter account:

My guess range is 4.3-4.7 but that’s really based on absolutely nothing more than a semi-standard 15% drop & margin of error

After last week I am tempted to go the reverse direction and declare that fabulous word of mouth will drive the ratings even higher.  But, based on all the production hiatuses and changes to showrunners I’m kind of worried that the second episode might be complete crap and that viewers will flee after 10 minutes. But maybe that doesn’t happen until the third or fourth episode.  Or maybe it doesn’t happen at all.

I’ll go just a little higher than the top  of  Travis’ range and predict a 4.8 adults 18-49 rating and 12.5 million viewers.

  1. forg says:

I’ll go for 4.3 and 11 million viewers. But I hope it will do better than my prediction

  2. Ben Thompson says:

    9mil
    3.5 in the demo

  3. If Ben is right my original prediction (actually it was a bit lower in the demo) will have merely been a week off!

  4. The1337 says:

12 million and 4.5 is my guess.

  5. Tommy says:

I’m going with Robert on this, 4.5 Demo and 11.5 – 12m Viewers

  6. Vetinari says:

3.8 in the demo. 11m viewers.

  7. Julia says:

This week will see a normal drop off, like Travis said, but I’m guessing, considering the production issues that the bad starts in the second episode, and they will flee next week.

  8. Cullen says:

    4.5

  9. spotupj says:

The word of mouth certainly seems better than other recent remakes, but I still think many people sampling a remake are there for sheer curiosity and almost guaranteed to not be in it for the long haul. Not as bad as Bionic Woman 2007’s week 2, but I’m going with a ~20% drop to low-11m and 4.1 demo.

  10. Baroness Fischer says:

    4.6 Live + SD, 12.5 mil

  11. Parenthood says:

Remember Heroes did well in its 2nd episode in season 1. So, I think it’s certainly possible with V. But, it could either way. 13.5 million.

  12. Bacchus says:

I calculate nose dive. I’ll be watching, but I don’t think the pilot met the hype and that was the episode they spent the most on.

Three weeks of downhill and then the discovery that the “Olympic Strategy” was the wrong one.

(I’m not saying the episode content will be going downhill, just the ratings.)

  13. Terry says:

    11.7 and a 4.5

  14. Parenthood says:

On the other hand it could increase just like heroes and Lost did because
of the curiosity factor. Also, the Obama controversy and Fox News’s promotion might actually get some people to turn in.

  15. Gleebo says:

It wont break the 10 million mark. By the time the 4th episode airs it will be around 8.5 or 9 million.

  16. IWIN says:

    12.9 million 4.9

  17. johnthemon says:

I guess this proves what you said earlier, this is now Vbythenumbers.

    I’m guessing a 4.4 and 11-12 million viewers.

  18. R.G says:

    Probably a 3.1 with 10 mill.

  19. Rose says:

4.1 I’m predicting a ~20% drop. I think it’s the kind of show that has an interesting pilot and gets boring after that ala FlashForward and The Nine (that bank robbery show from a few years back).

  20. the128boy says:

I got burned with my predition last week as well.

I’ll probably get burned again this week, but oh well… 3.9 demo…

  21. Kevin626 says:

    Whats the Obama controversy?

  22. Mark says:

    I’m watching right now.

    4.6

    13.6

  23. Gleebo says:

The Nine was a mess. Decent idea, decent enough cast but the show lost steam creatively after 2 episodes.

I think the same thing is happening for some people with Flash Forward this year although I have been pleased with the show quality so far. But I id rather watch a show with an ongoing arc you have to follow closely. All my favorite shows did it(Buffy, Angel, X-Files) so I prefer that to the stand alone style procedural route that seem to have the most success these days.

  24. Bruce says:

    10.8 mil, 3.9 demo

  25. Gleebo says:

    Nice Pearl Jam avatar.

  26. J.G. says:

    3.4 demo, 10.5 million viewers

  27. Nightstar says:

I’m guessing a 17% drop this week, 9% more after that, then slight drop (2-5%) on episode 4 (too lazy to calculate what those numbers are in viewers and demos right now  )

  28. romo says:

IV.IV rating & XII million total viewers.

  29. shelly says:

I really don’t know what to think about this one. I remember last week’s V thread and it seemed like the comments there were mixed leaning on positive so I don’t know about it getting that much positive word of mouth. What worries me is that even if its first few episodes do well, the hiatus will most certainly kill its momentum.

  30. Parenthood says:

There was a lot of mixed reaction to the heroes pilot too, and the ratings continued to go up.

  31. Ricardo says:

Nobody knows. I hope it does even better, but doubt it.

  32. Lostaholic516 says:

I hope it goes up. With Flashforward a semi-disappointment (to say the least) and FRINGE’s numbers dropping dramatically..i need a show like V to have at least a decent following.

  33. Hasbi Akkoca says:

    I will go for, 4.5-4.8 and ~ 12.5-13.0 M in viewer.

NCIS will beat it I think in both demo and viewer this week. I hope. :D

  34. Victor Hugo says:

    11.6 m and 4.3/11

  35. cool says:

    12.80 million viewers
    4.8

  36. Baroness Fischer says:

Paced a lot better than the pilot.

  37. usedtolovecoco says:

Like last week, I’m more pessimistic than most of you but I also hope you’re the ones that are right.

The show has some really weak spots but some good spots too. I will be watching just to see Morena Baccarin + Scott Wolf, and Teenage Kid + Supergirl. The rest I don’t really care about. Blonde FBI Lady from Lost must have had a contract with ABC that they needed to burn off or something, because boy, she can’t act.

  38. Chaz says:

12.5 million viewers????? Wow. No way. The second episode was just as good as the first. Epecially the first 10 minutes.

I say 13.68 if there is a drop.

    Or…

    14.40 if there is a gain…..

Im more on the 13.68 though…

  39. thedemonhog says:

    13.8 million, 4.9 demo.

  40. kenny says:

11.5-12.5 million viewers 4.0 in demo

But i’m begging for V doing waaaaaaaayyy better than that

  41. cool says:

Elizabeth Mitchell can’t act? you clearly don’t watch Lost..

One of my favorite scenes of EM on Lost.

    Juliet and Ben argument

  42. Christopher says:

I’ll randomly throw out 10 mil 4.25. I wasn’t impressed by the premiere but think it has potential. I just don’t think people will stick around if the quality stays consistent with the premiere.

  43. Ty says:

    4.4 Demo
    9.98 Million Viewers

  44. immie_8 says:

    10.5 million viewers

    4.6 demo

  45. I’ll stick with 3.1 until I get it right.

  46. Charles says:

    10.4 million

    4.2 demo

  47. Mumbo says:

    4.3, 10 million

  48. Dan says:

    11 million 4.3

  49. OpeningDayGuy09 says:

The next Bionic Woman and Knight Rider in waiting!

  50. Jack says:

I say anything less than a 4.3 bodes very poorly for its future.

  51. Dan says:

Opening Day – Maybe, the only difference is its not airing 8pm wednesdays on NBC. Vs airing 8pm Tuesdays on ABC. The real thing that will hurt V is the fact that after 4 episodes, it will return March, when the smart thing is to keep it on.

  52. Julie says:

I just hope for the same numbers….i love ABC and hope it does well!!!

  53. OpeningDayGuy09 says:

Dan that’s what I meant, V will probably stay healthy until its break. Once it returns it goes to Bionic Woman and KR levels. If its lucky its ratings will be similar to Flash Forward’s.

  54. Targetman says:

    abc
(1953-2007) the real abc i used to know is dead!

  55. Dan says:

Thats why ABC should have premiered V in september, instead V has a better chance of failing when it returns. If it returns in the same time slot it will face American Idol, NCIS and Biggest Loser. The show will get pummeled.

  56. Southern Boy says:

    13.4 million

  57. baqinardo says:

    4.2/11.23 mil.

  58. lizard says:

    I dug it.

  59. starmud says:

i donnu about ratings this time xD the 2nd episode was pretty good though, even better than the pilot IMO lol

  60. I think I can tell you, at least in general terms: I’m downloading the EZTV.IT form of it, and it’s been done for a little while. There are 2,600 seeders and 15,677 leechers.

That’s about right for a normal night’s 2.5 men or BBT; the numbers are comparable. It’s gonna be a decent night’s ratings!

Now HOUSE for some reason, blows those away. The last one I saw, about an hour after submission was 3-4 thousand seeds, and 25,000 leechers! Nobody gets close to that- I’m not sure why.

  61. R.G says:

Whoever guesses more than a 5.0 is not awake yet, and are still dreaming.

  62. Lucky says:

I am going with a 4.7 and about 13 million. ABC shows haven’t been having huge drops in week 2. I thought the show was fantastic. I think everyone gets discouraged and just expects a show to get dumped. While production issues often mean trouble, it’s not always the case. If the show stays at 8PM against AI, I will pick V, as I haven’t watched AI weekly since season 1.

  63. Bill Gorman says:

I guessed a 4.0 demo last week, and I’m going to keep guessing a 4.0 demo until I’m right! ;)

  64. Dan says:

I dont think V will suffer that big of a drop.

  65. Dan says:

The series will drop slightly until November 24 but will suffer a worse drop by March.

  66. luis says:

i dont think it will break 10 million this shows ratings will go down every week and then it will just fade away v = epic fail but not as big as flash forward which i like but both of these shows v and flash forward will not be on the air long v wont get a season 2 and flash forward will see a end to season 2 before it gets put out back and shot lol

  67. Parenthood says:

The pilot has a lot of positive buzz. This episode will get 13 million.

  68. Tommy says:

I know a lot of people tend to think that V will do horribly when it returns in March, But if it’s paired with Lost and they both premiere at the same time it could do really well.

  69. Parenthood says:

I agree. In fact, I think it’s better than Lost.

  70. shelly says:

Dan, I completely agree with you. ABC should’ve given V the major push instead of the coma-inducing Flashforward. I really enjoyed the second episode. They seem to be moving the story right along and making it creepy and suspenseful at the same time. It sucks that this show could fail not because it’s bad but all because ABC is run by incompetent twats.

Tommy, I’d love for you to be right but this is November and March is a long time away.

  71. Dan says:

Tommy – Lost cant premiere with V. Dancing splits the series up on Tuesdays. The only available slot for late January/ early February is Tuesday at 8. If Lost airs there then V would have to find another slot when it returns in March. It could air at 10 Tuesdays (Post Dancing) after Forgotten ends. But then it begs the question, where will ABC air Happy Town, The Deep End, or Copper.

  72. Dan says:

Shelly – Also V returning March complicates things further since ABC will have Lost by then and other series. Yet if V returned Jan, it would have a nice open slot and would be able to continue and air all 13 eps out in time for another series to take its place.

  73. Kermonk says:

Much more interesting: How will it do for its 5th episode…

  74. Grady says:

4.9 and 13 million is my guess. I’d love for it to even better, though. I’m completely hooked already.

  75. Tommy says:

We all know it will take a hit if it stay’s on Tuesdays at 8, Idol hurts everything it goes against. I still think ABC should put DWTS results at 8, but they likely won’t be willing to put it against Idol.

  76. Dan says:

But its Lost’s final season so, ABC may want to have the show hold up against Idol and NCIS as opposed to a new series like V. Thats why its also likely for Lost to air at 10 (wednesdays)

  77. If the fact that this second “V” ratings prediction post has drawn half as much interest as the first one is any indication — and it isn’t — then

  78. Dan says:

It will amaze me if ABC finds time slots for all these series come midseason.

  79. Harold says:

I’m predicting a solid 25% drop in the demo. The drop in the number of viewers will not be as large.

    I’m guessing 3.9 / 11.5 million.

  80. Parenthood says:

Would anybody be surprised if the ratings went up for the 2nd episode?

  81. Tommy says:

I’d be shocked if it get’s the same as the premiere, let alone if it goes higher….lol

  82. Parenthood says:

    FYI: I’d be shocked too!

  83. shelly says:

    What Tommy said.

  84. Parenthood says:

But, then most people didn’t expect it to get that many viewers the 1st time. This reminds me of Heroes S1 where you had mixed reviews of the pilot and it became a big hit anyway.

  85. Dan says:

Any series gaining viewers would be a shock, though that was the case with CBS’s The Mentalist, it did air after NCIS which also kept rising. For V, I see the series have a slight drop, but like everyone else if numbers went up, Id be surprised. ABC may wish that they had more eps in the can so the series wouldnt have such a big hiatus.

  86. Parenthood says:

If memory serves me correct, didn’t Heroes S1 ratings go up with each episode? I think at it’s peak it had 16 million for one episode. Same thing happened whereby one episode had 20 million. I think this is what happened.

  87. Dan says:

Heroes went up to 16 then slowly went down and If you notice each episode every season goes slightly more down.

  88. Parenthood says:

Same thing happened with Lost. It’s more of a cult hit.

  89. TomKH says:

    Over.
    5.5 with 14.8 mill.

  90. vsaint says:

Would it really get that killed at 8pm Tuesday.
IDOL and Biggest Loser, somewhat similar audience, reality audience.
NCIS, cop. I normally watch this, but will watch V, since Police Procedurals are a dime a dozen.
There’s a reason the show has been revamped, good actors that were very average, rushed pilot, stories and writing sloppy.

    I’m guessing 4.2 and 11.2 Million.

  91. Phil says:

Abc’s mid season is on wikipeida. Is there info right because it says lost is on thursdays and flashfoward on wensday and the middle is on monday??

  92. MC says:

10% drop in viewers and demo…so 13 mil and a 4.7 is what I’m going with.

  93. Parenthood says:

Scott Rosenbaum from Chuck is replacing Scott Peters as Showrunner. I have some faith because Rosenbaum wrote for Chuck, one of the best shows on tv!

  94. Fringfan says:

It’ll start with a 4.2 and drop to a 3.6, 11 to 8 mill. That’s what the numbers tell me but I say 3.7 and 9 mill final

  95. Fabio says:

I hope it beats NCIS in the demos…

for me 4.6/12 11,8 million viewers.

  96. ABCFanatic2009 says:

Between 15 to 13 million viewers

  97. Parenthood says:

    V is the next Lost!

  98. Ali says:

    4.6 and 12.5 Million viewers

  99. jason says:

4.7 rating and 13.5 million viewers

  100. john conner says:

a 5.5 rating with adults 18-49 and averaged 15.1 million viewers
most said it would go down so I will say the opposite.
I think anyone seeing the pilot will want to see ep 2 and maybe a few others check it out. the drop will be next week.

  101. Dario says:

    5.0 18-49 and 14 lil. viewers.

  102. Trey says:

Heroes’ ratings kept rising in Season 1 because the show kept getting better and better until it was just ridiculously good. The show still has that addiction factor to it.

    Lost has it as well.

I don’t know about V. I liked the premiere episode and the second one was all right. We’ll see where it goes.

  103. Michael J says:

It wasn’t a bad episode and while I won’t guess as to actual numbers, I expect it will go down a little but too much.

  104. Mickey says:

    10.956 million & a 4.3 in the demo.

  105. melbye says:

    4.0 around 10 million

  106. cougarman says:

    To Chaz

I agree with you that the second episode was just as good as the first. Epecially the first 10 minutes. Hope the rating will not drop too much.

  107. Tommy says:

Phil, be careful when using Wikipedia, anyone can go there and edit information, so while it may be accurate information Wikipedia isn’t a reliable source for correct info. As far as I know, ABC hasn’t released their midseason schedule yet, but they should be putting it out soon.

  108. Jack says:

5.4 demo and 16 million (it is crazy enough that it might happen).

  109. Me says:

I’ll guess 4.8 demo with 13.2 million viewers.

  110. DocArzt says:

It could come in stronger based on the buzz from last weeks numbers. Rare, but not unprecedented.

  111. Doug (2) says:

I’ll go downwards. Based on the number of pages on the TWoP V episode thread compared to last week, I’ll go 11 million and a 3.8 in adults.

  112. red says:

The nosedive will come with episode 3, when it’ll be under 10 million viewers.

  113. Mike says:

    I’m going 9.8 Million 3.9 demo

I also actually watched the show last night – not exactly a blockbuster, but it was alright compared to other offerings.

  114. joe beach says:

“80 million people watched you last night.”
“No. 80 million people watched Anna.”

    Heh. 80 million.

  115. 4.0/10 with it dropping to below 3.5 by the time the fourth episode is shown.

  116. Doug (2) says:

6.3 in the overnights, down from 8.7 the week before.

  117. Samuel says:

over 4.5, lets say 4.7 ans 12-14 million viewers

  118. Julia says:

If demo drops the same percentage as overnights, we’re looking at 3.7. Bigger drop than I was expecting, and probably disappointing for ABC. Especially if the problems only began in the second or third episode, and the big drops were supposed to be for the next two weeks.

  119. Luke says:

10.6 mil / 3.7. It’s doomed if you ask me

  120. gregg says:

ill say 16. 4 million viewers, with a 5.4 adults

  121. Fringefan says:

3.7, i was dead on. V is not a show everyone is gonna like so this drop was expected. This weeks episode was better than the first so hopefully it’ll only drop to a 3.5 next week.
