TBS’s LOPEZ TONIGHT Welcomes 3.2 Million Viewers to Simulcast Premiere of Late Night’s Big Party

Last night, TBS’s new series LOPEZ TONIGHT got the late-night party started in a big way, scoring 3.2 million viewers and 1.8 million adults 18-49.  The series premiere, which was simulcast on TBS and sister networks TNT and truTV, featured host George Lopez chatting with guests Ellen DeGeneres, Eva Longoria-Parker and Kobe Bryant, and musical guest Carlos Santana.

Individually, TBS’s premiere was watched by 1.7 million viewers, while TNT’s part of the simulcast was watched by 1 million viewers and truTV’s by half a million viewers.  TBS’s telecast also delivered more adults 18-34 than the season-to-date averages for six other major late-night series on broadcast and cable, and more adults 18-49 than five other late-night series.

“Viewers are ready for a change, and George Lopez is an exciting addition to late-night television,” said Steve Koonin, president of Turner Entertainment Networks.  “We are extremely proud of the success of last night’s premiere of LOPEZ TONIGHT and are confident the show will continue to be a big late-night hit.”

  1. tom says:

so leno is now in… 4th?

  2. Mike says:

I would have expected better for a heavily-hyped show. I’m also not so sure that the simulcast was sucha good idea, the drop off will now be monumental.

  3. tom, Leno doesn’t air at the same time and isn’t considered “late night” (10pm is still primetime). As Mike notes, the drop off is likely to be pretty steep it will be interesting to follow.

  4. Easten76 says:

Lopez is the best of the current late night comics. So far cable’s Chelsea Lately and Lopez shit all over the boring comics on the broadcasters.

  5. 0mega says:

I had the same thought that 3.2 million was not really that impressive for a show was promoted as heavily as this was. We’ll have to see what the dropoff is, but if it is anywhere as big as you would think, this show is pretty much an abject failure.

  6. Jesse says:

I turned it on and immediately turned it off when I saw “Used the N Word/Never Used the N Word”

Someone give Craig Ferguson an earlier show. He’s miles better than the rest of the late night hosts.

  7. tom says:

oh… thought it was on at 11.

  8. Grace W. says:

@ Jesse: Absolutely! Craig is the best-kept secret in late-night.

  9. andrew says:

Does anyone know how “The Daily Show” and “The Colbert Report” are performing ratings-wise in comparison to the past couple of years?

  10. Danielle Ledesma says:

Lopez Tonight was wonderful last night. It is a refreshing entry into the world of latenight television, where, much of it has been quite staid. The show is full of energy, creativity & life! I wish George & the whole staff & crew continued success. It is so nice to actually have a show on TV worth watching!

  11. CdeLeo says:

The only guest I’m interested in is Eva Mendez’s Booty.

  12. Sara says:

Honestly, I dont really like George Lopez, I just dont think he is funny at all

  13. Roland says:

    The Daily Show, October 2007
    Rating: 1.3
    Viewers: 1,608,000
    18–49: 1,056,000

    The Colbert Report, October 2007
    Rating: 0.9
    Viewers: 1,153,000
    18–49: 802,000

Couldn’t find other numbers.. but a NYTIMES article from 2005, puts The Daily Show averaging 1.3M viewers and 2/3 between 18-49

But looking at 2007 to now, it looks pretty consistent. Hard to state though without multiple data points–but since 2007 I’d say they pretty much have grown slightly.

  14. Joe says:

George is the most unfunny person in Hollywood. His new show just proves that ANYONE in Hollywood can get a talkshow. I saw only a couple of minutes of his opening monologue and that was a couple of minutes of my life I can’t get back. I didn’t laugh AT ALL. It’s truly amazing what networks will come up with to counter popular programs. Does FOX really think they can draw viewers away from SNL with the Wanda Sykes show? Did they forget how she tried to embarass Bill Cosby at the Emmy’s about 5 years ago? Talk about an awkward moment. I guess I’m too old, because I enjoy the older guys like Letterman, Conan (and if still alive and working) Johnny Carson. For some reason, (so-called) comedians/comediennes think they have to be loud and obnoxious to be funny…not so.

  15. Roland says:

I have to agree with you on one point Joe, perhaps you’re too old =p Just kidding with you, but Conan isn’t generally seen as an old person show–although I can see now how it is more old friendly than the 12:30 show.

But the problem with letterman, conan, and even leno is that they are all the same thing. The interviews are boring as hell, and I don’t really want to hear them talk about the movie they are pushing. The great part about the daily show or colbert report is that more often than not, they have people on who have interesting things to say about the world we live in. Yes they are still pushing a book, or sometimes film, but the majority of times you have people who are interesting and fresh.

  16. paul says:

Watching Lopez would make a great drinking game — take a swig every time this fugly racist makes a racial comment. Take two every time he says “Latino”. Take three every time he says something derogatory about “Caucasians”.
BET has Monique and then Wendy Williams on when douchebags like Lopez and Letterman are on the other channels. I’ll stick with BET.

  17. Ivan says:

George Lopez is funny, especially if you’re Latino. But stop hating on him. What I Love about George is that he humiliates Caucasians because they are so retarded n lazy nowadays. All of u r used 2 hearing jokes about blacks n mexicans Well get use 2 George’s bullying Caucasians!!!

  18. RUKidding? says:

The funniest late night (actually early morning) show is Red Eye. A zero budget show on a news channel provides more laughs than Letterman, Leno, Lopez, and the rest combined.

  19. jaime green +fam says:

we love you a lot . cabron

  20. jaime green +fam says:

We love you a lot, cabron

  21. sonia torres says:

WE are LOVING the George Lopez show!!! We saw him live here in Corpus Christi this past August and his show was about 2 hours and we laughed our asses off!!!!!! LOVE YOU GEORGE!!!!!!

  22. BJ says:

He thinks he can taunt any ethnic group as long as he insults them all. OLD SCHOOL!!! By the way, any Mexican knows that “giant ‘negro’” is code for the “n” word. George, you are an insult to Latinos and a traitor to their empowerment.

  23. russel hampton III says:

Lopez Tonight was a great show yesterday and tonight, all u old people can go back to watching mattlock, gay leno and lettermen, GLO is the voice of today’s youth, we love his shows, his cds, watch all his movies his specials, I love George Lopez (no homo) and all my friends love him too, and we’re not even latino! We are white boys from Oklahoma!, i hope Lopez Tonight continues to do well and burns conan in the ratings. LOPEZ 4 EVER!!! (((hes the team leader)))

  24. Riff Rafferty says:

At last, what the world has been pining for: The Latino Leno. Still more watchable than the Wanda Sykes debacle, but other than the band and the set, I saw nothing of any great value here.

  25. andrew says:

Thank you for the Daily Show and Colbert Report numbers Roland.

  26. jflores says:

Congrats to George! Watched last night and it was fun, great set, great music. The sketches are better produced than what is typically found in your late night shows. Something that is a treat, George is demonstrating the real ease with which african americans and hispanics relate to each other. Most of the audience knew Jamie Fox’s lyrics more than Marc Anthony’s lyrics. Keep up the good work George, don’t swear to much and ignore the haters.

Que el senor te bendiga! God bless you!

  27. jay says:

I stopped liking talk shows a long time ago – apres Carson ( Johhny ), le deluge of dreck. But George Lopez, I’ve observed from a few clips of him in front of a live audience, is a hell of a lot funnier than any of his late night competition in that regard. ( As someone indicated, Chelsea Handler is embarassingly bad and an insult to true women standups. Who’s carrer is cast out into some alternate universe so Chelsea can have her undeserved niche? ) Lopez is a natural. His #’s probably will drop, but TNT has the right idea. With so many lousy late-nighters who don’t even grasp, as Conan and Letterman both did in their time, the whole premise of a Late Night show, it’s smart to put Lopez on cable and just keep eating away at the network clay idols. Now if only cable would get serious about competing with the nets from 8 AM to two PM …

  28. db says:

Anyone see numbers for last night?

  29. db, I haven’t yet. If TBS sends out a release or anyone else publishes the numbers I will do a separate post. If that doesn’t happen, we will see the Tue-Fri numbers next Tuesday and I’ll post them.

  30. sara says:

He is downright funny, honest and true to hispanic beginnings here in US. Not for myself, however, his followers can sympathize, and when you sympathize, nostalgia and memory lane makes you connect. It is unfair he doesn’t have the proper support to pull out the full spectrum of a late night night show, UNFORTUNATELY FOR US AND HE!His show won’t be off air due to him, but from poor staff for he and show. SHAME ON HIS NETWORK! Sweaty George, him calling for applause, audiences not aware of surroundings when camera crew focuses camera on audience, guest says somehting entertaining to audience and camera still on guest not audience, all above mentioned had nothing to do with George and how unfair! He needs to be made aware by watching his own show and learn how to pull through. God bless George, whatever the outcome…

  31. VIEJAV says:

LOPEZ TONIGHT IS GREAT!!!!! I WILL ALWAYS BE A GEORGE LOPEZ FAN HES FUNNY AND FINALLY WE HAVE A LATINO HOST THAT WE CAN RELATE TO…..IF YOU DON’T LIKE HIM OR HIS SHOW DON’T WATCH. AND U CAN STICK TO LENO OR LETTERMAN TAKE OUR PICK. WISHING YOU MUCH SUCCESS G.LO

  32. monica says:

george your show is so good we look at the show and even tape so we can laugh all over again there alot of people out there that just like mexicans so they are so they cant beleave a mexican can have so many fans love you monica

  33. forkuu says:

this show is the future of late night. all of the dull and boring conservative uptights go back to conan and his same old same old routine. georges show is fantastic . it is alive it is topical and fastpaced. this show will last . and all you jerks watch and see the numbers will be good. shut up all you matlock viewers!

  34. Jake says:

Show is an rehash of lame ethnic humor deemed as “not funny” back in the 80’s. Nothing original. Should be off the air by Christmas, if it makes it that long.
Like watching a 6th grader showing off in front of his friends with unfunny racist humor. The talent pool must be slim if they can give this guy valuable TV time for this unwatchable show. I just removed the channel from my TV scan so I won’t accidentally switch it on ever again.

If the show makes you laugh, then enjoy while it lastes. Everyone’s tastes are different.

  35. Hottieblonde says:

I love George Lopez!!!.. Lopez tonight is the best late night show to watch

  36. Ben says:

I’ll have to be honest. He’s not funny to me. He just seems obnoxious. I’ll stick with Leno.
