TV Ratings: House, Lie to Me, Castle up; Heroes down; Jay Leno slips below 4 million viewers

Posted on 10 November 2009 by Robert Seidman

House-Billboard

Scoreboard FOX CBS ABC NBC Uni CW
Adults 18-49: Rating/Share 4.0/10 3.9/10 3.2/8 1.8/4 1.4/4 1.2/3
Adults 18-34: Rating/Share 3.8/10 2.9/8 2.1/6 1.6/5 1.4/4 1.6/4
Total Viewers (million) 10.13 11.89 15.33 4.90 3.59 2.49

House led the night with adults 18-49 with a 5.1 rating and has 12.79 million overall average viewers and Lie to Me had a 3.0 rating with adults 18-49, up 25 percent from its last original telecast on 10/26 (note, for that telecast its lead-in was not House, but So You Think You Can Dance). FOX led the night with adults 18-49, narrowly edging out CBS.

After House, The Big Bang Theory was next with adults 18-49 with a 4.5 rating and 12.4 million overall average viewers.

Heroes dropped to a 2.3 rating — it’s lowest ever for an original episode.  The Jay Leno Show slipped below 4 million viewers, no doubt giving the executives at Gray Television more fuel for blaming Jay Leno for its poor results.

Dancing with the Stars still has some legs in it (wannabe program schedulers should take heed and keep it on their Monday & Tuesday schedules for the spring).  Although it was under a 4.0 rating in both hours, it still averaged a 3.5 rating with adults 18-49 for the two hours along with 17.64 million average viewers from 8p-10p.

We’ll have to see if Castle drops further in the final numbers (last week it held steady from the preliminary overnight numbers) between the minute or so of Dancing With the Stars overrun and the Monday Night Football game broadcasting locally on the ABC affiliate in Pittsburgh (thanks to commenter J.R. Herbaugh for providing that information), but it was up versus last week. I think it likely to go down at least a 10th (which would make it flat vs. last week) due to the football game but we’ll know around 5pm ET.

Note: earlier, I incorrectly headlined this post that Castle was down week over week.  It wasn’t.

Here are some ratings notes on last night’s One Tree Hill and Gossip Girl.

In Late-Night Local People Meters Monday night:

  • Conan O’Brien (0.8/4 in 18-49 in local people meters) trailed CBS’s LATE SHOW (1.0/4) in Nielsen’s 24 local markets with People Meters.
  • At 12:35 a.m., Jimmy Fallon (0.4/3 in 18-49 in local people meters) finished behind CBS’s LATE LATE SHOW (0.6/4).

Definitions:

*Fast Affiliate Ratings: These first national ratings, including demographics, are available at approximately 11 AM (ET) the day after telecast, and are released to subscribing customers daily. These data, from the National People Meter sample, are strictly time-period information, based on the normal broadcast network feed, and include all programming on the affiliated stations, sometimes including network programming, sometimes not. The figures may include stations that did not air the entire network feed, as well as local news breaks or cutaways for local coverage or other programming. Fast Affiliate ratings are not as useful for live programs and are likely to differ significantly from the final results, because the data reflect normal broadcast feed patterns. For example, with a World Series game, Fast Affiliate Ratings would include whatever aired from 8-11PM on affiliates in the Pacific Time Zone, following the live football game, but not game coverage that begins at 5PM PT. The same would be true of Presidential debates as well as live award shows and breaking news reports.

Rating: Estimated percentage of the universe of TV households (or other specified group) tuned to a program in the average minute. Ratings are expressed as a percent.

Share (of Audience): The percent of households (or persons) using television who are tuned to a specific program, station or network in a specific area at a specific time. (See also, Rating, which represents tuning or viewing as a percent of the entire population being measured.)

Time Shifted Viewing – Program ratings for national sources are produced in three streams of data – Live, Live+Same Day (Live+SD) and Live+7 Day. Time shifted figures account for incremental viewing that takes place with DVRs which are currently in approximately 24.4% of all U.S. TV households. Live+Same Day (Live+SD) include viewing during the same broadcast day as the original telecast, with a cut-off of 3:00AM local time when meters transmit daily viewing to Nielsen for processing. Live+7 Day ratings include incremental viewing that takes place during the 7 days following a telecast.

195 Responses to “TV Ratings: House, Lie to Me, Castle up; Heroes down; Jay Leno slips below 4 million viewers”

  1. Samantha says:

Looks like a new low for Heroes (if I’m not mistaken) at a 2.3. Ouch.

  2. grr_argh says:

    NBC should just give up.

  3. Dan says:

Accidentally’s retention out of HIMYM has gotten better same with Lie to me out of House. FOX should give a full season to Lie to Me any day now. Trauma continues its burn off and hopefully the drama will get to finish all episodes bu December so Chuck can return Jan.

  4. Kyle says:

What were the ratings for the George Lopez talk show (TBS)? Since it was the premier of the show I wonder if a lot of people tuned in to check it out, hurting ratings on other channels.

  5. Eric (Ohio) says:

If Castle gets cancelled I will die.

(Literally. Somehow, because I frequent this site, my girlfriend will blame me for its demise.)

  6. alucard says:

castle is increased: last week was 2.4 with 9.60.
This is week is 10.72 with 2.5

  7. grr_argh says:

I wonder how that threesome helped out Gossip Girl’s ratings last night.

  8. Khan says:

    My heart bleeds for heroes.

  9. pisher says:

You know, people say Jay Leno in primetime is bad for scripted programming.

But imagine how Castle would be doing without him.

Actually, if it was up against just ONE more scripted show, it’d probably be canceled by now.

    ;)

  10. nillo says:

Castle will likely drop a tick to 2.4 when final numbers are released. Consistent numbers compared to other ABC shows.

  11. Any more lower on AOP & it may be cancelled.

  12. James says:

Not trying to be a retentionista, or use any of the cancelled-television bingo phrases, but Lie to me lost 5 million viewers–3 million of which were in the demo.

Last year Fringe was pulling 9-10 million out of House, and keeping 80% of the demo. I think that the higher ups must see this–surely a Fringe/Lie to me swap is coming.

  13. Luke says:

That’s a season high for OTH, and GG gets beaten again.

  14. Jon says:

Did DWTS have overrun as Castle was up as was CSI: Miami although the crossover had an effect.

  15. “Lie to Me” isn’t losing half the lead-in audience anymore, so that’s good.

  16. Adelle says:

    Was The CW preempted somewhere?

  17. Dan says:

5506 – I already know what will happen. Accidentally will finish its 18 episodes by February and ROE will return to the 8:30 monday slot to likely better numbers and better retention. AOP wont be pulled, rather it will suffer the same fate as Worst Week and The Class.

And for all you Castle fans, the series real test in ratings is how the show will do once it begins airing post The Bachelor. Thats when ABC will see how the series can hold up on its own. Same with Forgotten, however Forgotten will likely have a worse drop due to it’s lower rated lead in.

  18. johnthemon says:

Darn, new low for Heroes. It may be because of the focus on Parkman this last episode, Greg Grunberg isn’t a good enough actor to carry a storyline, and opposite Zachary Quinto he seems even worse.

  19. Dan says:

J.R. Herbaugh – FOX should be letting us know their midseason plans any day now, which should include a full season for Lie to Me somehwere in the mix.

  20. Lee says:

Hopefully Castle doesn’t drop below a 2.4 when the finals are in. DWTS overrun doesn’t seem to play as much a factor this season as it did last season. In the key demo that is.

I’m not sure how big the football game was this week though.

  21. Errol Lewis says:

Why are GOSSIP GIRL’s numbers missing?

  22. Tar says:

GG ratings arent showing in table

  23. Alex says:

Wow does anybody watch NBC anymore. Those are atrocious numbers. Cheap CBS comedies crushing expensive NBC scripted shows. House was pretty good last night but the drop off to Lie To Me is a little disturbing. 5 days of Leno is just too much…and on top of that the show sucks.

  24. melbye says:

Something tells me House is hurting Heroes

  25. Stan says:

Gossip Girl will be around 2.3 million viewers cause the average of the CW is 2.49

2.67 from OTH and GG must have 2.3 million to reach that average

  26. Luke says:

    2.31/1.2 for GG

  27. Chuck Tranberg says:

Monday is a very weak night for NBC. I admit I wasn’t as hard on Leno as some here when it began, but it is beginning to look like a big dud. Of course we have to see how it does in rerun season, but I’ve tried to watch a few Leno’s and they are pretty repetitive and I can see how people will grow tired of the same stale thing night after night in prime time.

  28. Tom says:

James, Lie to Me only has the slot until 24 comes back. That is, if Lie to Me comes back at all, they only have 13 episodes + 3 scripts at this point. Still, the poor LtM performance does make it more likely that Fringe gets moved to the sweet Tuesday spot that looks to be open.

I guess the CSI crossover did work – and could be the cause of the Leno drop. Monday is usually weak for Leno – could be DVRing of multiple Monday programs / MNF.

AoP is usually 0.5 behind Mother, and should not air once RoE comes back. Nothing new here.

Heroes really should wrap it up with a two hour series finale the week before the Olympics. But NBC will probably wait to see if the numbers improve at 9, once Chuck comes online.

  29. Chucksmom says:

    Lee-

I am with you. Hopefully, Castle doesn’t drop any after the final numbers. Otherwise, the headline is correct and Castle is up.

But I am a little worried becasue I didn’t think it was the best episode this season.

  30. Dan says:

House is hurting everything, which is good for FOX. Their mondays this year are a lot better than when they aired Terminator/Prison Break. Which may be why the 8-9 comedies are down a bit from last year and Heroes is down a lot. House/24 combo will work great for FOX midseason. If Lie to Me gets a full year Im not sure where it will go. The only options are Fridays at 8 and Tuesdays at 9.

  31. grr_argh says:

    @melbye

House isn’t hurting Heroes. The fact that fans have finally given up is what’s hurting Heroes.

  32. Melissa says:

Heroes fell so hard, so fast. Castle doesn’t have the best numbers, but depending on how the midseason replacements go, and what ABC has in store for next season, I could see it surviving for next season.

  33. Ali says:

Heroes has really been getting better IMO and I really hope the show gets to high 2s or at least a 3.0 and stay there :(

  34. Dan says:

Tom – Yep ROE having better retention out of HIMYM will spell the end for AOP. Also Lie to Me’s retention while isnt amazing, isnt that bad either. It should get a full season just to round things out but if FOX wants to save it, the series will again air post idol, If they dont Lie to Me will shift to fridays.

  35. yoshue says:

Sometimes you can understand why people like something. But Castle is so dull and rote that I can’t fathom for a second why anyone would even watch, let alone litter the internet with its praises.

  36. Dan says:

Melissa – Castle has a 50/50 chance, it all depends on its performance post the Bachelor and how other series perform. Only time will tell. I can say that Flashforward is a likely candidate for a second year, and Forgotten while given 5 more eps, will be forgotten by ABC after that.

  37. Really Tired says:

NBC neeeds to program Fat Losing shows 5 days a week.

And the stellar Thursday 8-10pm lineup.

  38. Kim says:

I tried watching Castle, but even though I like Nathan Fillion, his costar is just so generic and one-note that the whole show falls flat for me. If they cast a more dynamic female lead opposite him, I might be inclined to try to watch it again (what about Robin Christopher? she’d be great), but right now, fugghedabowdit.

  39. Eric (Ohio) says:

    @ Yoshue
I feel the same about How I Met Your Mother and Two and a Half Men.
    Horrible shows.

    Castle is great though.

  40. Bill Gorman says:

Gossip Girl averaged a 1.2 rating for adults 18-49 and 2.3 million average viewers.

The way our tables work, I am reluctant to insert the numbers for fear of screwing everything up. Robert likely will later.

  41. Kate says:

I find it incredible that House, with the bad writing of last night, is considered a hit and Castle, much better written, and with only 2 million less viewers than House and a third more than Lie To Me, may be cancelled.

    The tyranny of the demo.

  42. What if Fox puts their best ratings show i.e House & Bones on the friday night slot as a new episode :?:

  43. Dan says:

Hopefully NBC puts Heroes out of its misery but that may not be the case. NBC is hard to predict in terms of what bubble shows will survive into 2010-2011. Of the two veterans, I would just end Heroes now and possibly premiere Day One in the slot for fall 2010. But NBC may opt to renew the series.

  44. Jesse says:

OMG! Robin Christopher would be awesome on Castle. Stana Kavic is just Dullsville. Can’t stand her.

  45. Not to slam Dan, but I’d caution against using him as a source since he continuously is one of the folks concocting spring schedules for ABC that DON’T include the Dancing With the Stars results show on Tuesdays and given plummeting ratings its more than premature to call “FlashForward” likely for a second season. That’s true based on its overall ratings so far, but it’s trend (down) is not a good one.

  46. Kate says:

To those who don’t like Castle, that’s okay, not everyone has to like it. It has it’s own very strong fanbase.

I think it has the potential to be a long-running sleeper show like NCIS if only it can stay on.

Scoring high in the demo does not equal being a good quality show. House has lost at least a third of it’s audience but still does very well among the 18 – 34 year olds.

  47. 5506, what if I block you from the comments for commenting too much with unuseful and/or silly clutter? Would that be something you might be interested in?

  48. Andrea says:

I wonder where that 25% increase in viewers came from for LTM?

    Tom,

I don’t know what FOX can do about Fringe. FOX usually reserves the AI spot for new shows.

  49. ileandromp says:

i cannot believe how good Two and a Half Men did last night. WOW! after all this years!! crap, i missed House and Castle :(

  50. Dr.Baha Amro says:

Castle has increased and it will live or we all shall die :)

  51. Chucksmom says:

    Kate-

Relax. No one said that Caslte may get canceled.

  52. The_GodfatherSJP says:

Flash Forward’s trend is down, and if there’s one type of genre that definitely responds to negative reviews, it’s the Sci-Fi genre. So far, the reviews are middling for each episode. I don’t see how they’re going to improve ratings unless the episode quality really picks up.

As for FOX switching Lie To Me with Fringe, I have a question: has Lie To Me been given a full season pickup or not?

  53. Andrea, I’d say it’s all due to House, I probably should’ve included it in the post: the last time LTM aired on 10/26, it had a special So You Think You Can Dance as a lead-in rather than House.

  54. johnthemon says:

@grr_argh, yes House is hurting Heroes.

  55. Godfather — only 13. Still waiting to hear about a back 9 (or 5). My guess is it will get one or the other, but we’ll see!

  56. Dan says:

Robert – Thanks, but I only made a schedule once a while ago that was without DWTS on Tuesdays at 9. Now that I remember the results show at 9 tuesdays, any schedule that I make will have Dancing in that slot, beginning March. I only consider FlashForward likely for a second year based on numbers now, but I understand numbers can change. I just dont expect them to that much. Id guess FlashForward is 50/50 for a second year leaning more toward a renewal. But its still a guess. I wouldnt use me as a source but besides forgetting about DWTS on tuesdays , the schedules that I predict could seem plausible. ABC is harder to predict due to so many changing slots, but CBS and FOX are more easy to make schedules for.

5506 – That would never happen. FOX wouldnt air new episodes of their two solid dramas on fridays. House and Bones will continue to lead two competitive nights while FOX keeps trying out other series for fridays and that wont change anytime soon.

  57. Tom says:

Too bad Trauma is cancelled. They are shooting a big scene right outside from my office bldg in downtown Oakland right now. They have a helecoptor and swat trucks and all these police guys everywhere. Its really cool! Might have to just give the show a try, even though its done after 13 episodes.

  58. Kate says:

Chucksmom, the Renew/Cancel index has Castle in danger of being cancelled by May. I’m still worried. I want that second Nikki Heat book.

    http://tvbythenumbers.com/category/renewcancel-abc-shows

  59. The_GodfatherSJP says:

Actually Lie To Me was down to a 2.4 in 18-49 with So You Think You Can Dance instead of House (just checked the PI forums for that number).

If FOX wants to renew the show or give it a full season, we’ll know very soon. If they give it a full back 9, I think they’ll favor it over Fringe.

If it’s just 5 episodes though, I think that’s an indication FOX will favor Fringe over Lie To Me.

  60. Really Tired says:

NBC might be smart to move Community to Mondays.

  61. Dan says:

FOX’s midseason sched is packed so Lie to Me could get 18 instead of 22. I dont think FOX would move Lie to Me to air after Bones and move Fringe to air post Idol. Im hoping Fringe will improve but its possible thats wishful thinking.

  62. Really Tired says:

NBC will just bite the bullet till after the Winter Olympics.

  63. Tom says:

As mentioned above, Lie to Me is only at 13 episodes + 3 scripts.

Flashforward is not likely to get a second season at current trends, and could even be yanked off of prime Thursdays come January to fill Tue/Wed holes somewhere. No connection to Mondays, so leave it for the R/C Index post later today.

And yes, Fox likes to premiere big new shows after AI. The problem being that Fox only has one and a half new shows: Human Target, which is already sharing the post-AI Wednesday slot, and the 6 or 7 produced-before-halted Past Life episodes, which do not warrant an AI slot. So one existing show gets lucky with that Tuesday slot – almost certainly Lie to Me or Fringe getting a second chance.

  64. Steve says:

I like “Castle” but I just don’t have the time to watch it. it’s almost like the economy when people have to make tough decisions on what to spend money on, I’m like that with TV. My DVR is stuffed and I can’t watch TV 24/7. I’ve had to drop good shows like “The Cleaner”, “Castle”, “Bored to Death” and others because I can only “afford” to watch a certain amount of TV so I REALLY need to like it.

Does anyone else experience similar dilemmas? And it’s not like I have a life, I watch a ton of TV, but I can’t watch EVERYTHING I want to. If you TV execs are reading this, if I’m dropping regular shows I actually like, do you think I’d actually experiment with the worst Fall line up in history, with your condescending shows about the economy like “the middle” and “Hank”, or the Jay Leno show?! give me a break!

  65. Dan says:

Has Fringe gotten a full season yet? There hasnt been any news so I assume that it has. FOX is trying to increase is drama series so id count on seeing both Fringe and Lie to Me this spring.

  66. Anthony says:

It is to my continued amazement that 17 million people are willing to watch a television show where couples dance and are judged on their efforts. To say that these people are “stars” stretches the concept considerably. I’ll never understand you humans.

  67. Mike says:

Shouldn’t Two and a Half Men be on Top in the 9 o’clock hour and not Lie to Me?

The demo that you all love to worship was great for CBS from 9-11.

  68. bob says:

what is the demo thing? anyone? like what does 2.3/5 mean? and then 4.5/7 or something like that. what does each number represent

  69. Dan says:

Tom – I believe Lie to Me has a chance to air tuesdays post Idol, should FOX wait until March to premiere Past Life. Lie to Me can finish up that way. Human Target already has a set premiere date for Sunday Jan 17 and then a regular slot post Idol at 9 wednesdays. I doubt FOX would want to premiere Past Life in the same month. FlashForward does have 25 episodes so doubt it will be yanked or moved from 8pm Thursdays. ABC likes consistency and if they dont have the slots to move FF to, so while FF will most certainly air all episodes it may or may not be given another year.

  70. The_GodfatherSJP says:

Tom, if FOX has any brains, it’ll be Fringe instead of Lie To Me. Stronger fan base and stronger ratings behind House. Lie To Me doesn’t have nearly the same fan base. Yes, I know Lie To Me is a FOX show, but FOX isn’t on the hook for 22 episodes of Lie To Me. They ARE on the hook for 22 episodes of Fringe.

  71. bob says:

Castle was not down, jeez this whole site is hatin on castle!

I believe 10.72 million viewers with a 2.5 is up from like 9.25 million viewers with a 2.5

o yes, the “o just wait, it will drop!” ummm… if u remmeber it never dropped last week from a 2.5, and with it getting even more viewers than last week, there is a very good chance it dont drop again.

  72. Mike, yes, but I’m not going to change it since your head sorts so well on its own! Actually those comparisons aren’t really fair anyway since it’s 30 minute shows vs. 1 hour, but CBS won the hour either way (4.5 vs. 3.7 for ABC).

  73. Bob, you are correct but it was not Castle hate, just a mistake. The number is a 2.5, and I typed it as the 2.5 it was, but…my brain thought 2.3! I’ll edit the post.

  74. Southern Boy says:

i did see any of this lat night. hurricane coverage you know(except gossip girl)

  75. Amanda says:

Heroes is getting baaaad. I’m only hanging in to see how they finish it. Hopefully they will end it soon and with an actual ending. The TV execs need to learn one simple lesson: serial dramas should not try to continue indefinitely. They all start meandering aimlessly. Set a two year arc, three tops, at the beginning and let them go gracefully

  76. Dan says:

Godfather – It would seem unlikely for Fringe to air post Idol again. I dont think unless it drops any further that Fringe will be moved. I just hope FOX announces their sched soon so I dont need to keep guessing.

  77. Julia says:

TBBT hit a season low. Last week it was up against the World Series and was at 4.7. Interesting.

  78. cammy says:

    “The tyranny of the demo.”

Okay, I laughed. But yes to Castle’s excellence. It’s a show I’ll watch in real-time, commercials and all. There are very few about which I can say that.

It’ll be interesting to see if it can grow…or if ABC will give it the chance to grow. Iirc, neither House nor NCIS started as smash hits, but they grew over time. Castle could possibly do the same, though of course it depends on the network’s devotion. And some marketing wouldn’t go awry, either.

  79. Southern Boy says:

hurricane coverage made me miss most of these shows

  80. Dan says:

Well ABC has never had much luck with Mondays at 10 until Castle. Boston Legal did OK in its final year but previous efforts have failed (October Road, What About Brian) It seems ABC cant compete with a CSI at 10. However Castle is doing well enough to stay on for now. Only future numbers can tell on whether or not it will get a third year. We are still 6 months away from the upfronts and a lot can change by then.

  81. Julia, yep, and 2.5 Men tied its season lows. Last night’s football game will do well (and sure to outdo last week’s by a mile ratings-wise) but I don’t see it being bigger than last week’s football game + World Series. We’ll see!

  82. Eric (Ohio) says:

    @ Amanda
British series do this a lot. Coupling, Office, Extras… all had small arcs with good ends.

  83. Eric (Ohio) says:

Do you think if ABC took a stand on a show like Castle that is ‘on the bubble’ and said right now, halfway through the year “There will definitely be a third season.”, that it would attract some new viewers who don’t watch it because they don’t want to get involved in another series that will be cancelled?

  84. thatdude90210 says:

Leno seems very lead-in sensitive. It does best coming out of Biggest losers. I predict it won’t do any better, maybe even worst, against reruns because it’s own lead-in will be reruns too.

  85. Dan says:

Overall Men and Theory have been renewed for a while and its just 1 week that they are down. Both series are still doing really well. CBS needs to work on finding a compatibble series to HIMYM. AOP is doing OK but still goes down unlike TBBT which rose after Mother. However Bang has the luxury of airing post TAAHM. My best guess is that ROE will perform a lot better post HIMYM and will hopefully appear on the 2010-2011 fall schedule should it be renewed.

  86. Dan says:

Eric – I dont see Castle as a series getting an early renewal. Desperate Housewives, Brothers & Sisters, Grey’s Anatomy, Private Practice, Extreme Makeover Home Edition, AFHV, The Bachelor, Dancing With the Stars, Modern Family seem like the only current series Id say may get an early renewal, maybe Cougar Town. Id say Town, along with Middle have a pretty good chance and Id give 50/50 to Castle and FlashForward. Wife Swap and Supernanny could go either way and Ugly Betty and Lost are gone after May.

  87. MichyGeary says:

Thanks for these numbers. I’m impressed that not only did Castle retain its audience, it actually gained despite the CSI slaughterhouse I was expecting.

  88. Tom says:

@Kate – You said… “I’m still worried. I want that second Nikki Heat book.”

The irony is that might be what saves Castle. It’s no secret that a big part of the value in LOST is the secondary merchandise. Castle, like LOST, is produced by ABC Studios so ABC reaps some of the profit from any merchandise the show can sell.

So if Castle can hold steady in the ratings and convert a decent percentage of those fans into merchandise sales it’ll be a lock for renewal.

  89. PatPrez says:

I’m surprised BBT wasn’t higher in the ratings, it was really funny last night.

Boy are things sad for NBC, it’s ratings are just pathetic.

  90. Twilight_Hitman says:

    @Anthony,
I couldn’t agree with you more! Seeing those numbers for Dancing with the Stars absolutely infuriates me! Reality shows like these need to stop! The so called ‘Stars’ haven’t had that status for a very long time. And the fact that 17 Million people watch these has-beens try to fox trot boggles my mind.
I just hope somewhere down the road when our children have grown up they’ll look back at these types of shows and say ‘what were they thinking??’

  91. lainey says:

Since Lie To Me got a 3.0 in the demo, I thought that would be a good thing. It’s obviously not the monster that House is, but a 3.0 is considered an acceptable demo, especially if you only have 7 million something people viewing, because that means that a big percentage of the viewers are the demo that the ad people want. Isn’t that how it works?

  92. Michael says:

I know people hate it, but ACCIDENTALLY ON PURPOSE was VERY funny last night, and seems to be improving in both writing and acting. I also think BIG BANG was great last night. I think so far, TBBT has been somewhat of a dissapointment in season 3….but last night was one of the best this season

  93. shelly says:

Whether or not Castle continues to stay on the air depends on whether ABC has any better alternatives next season. If ABC doesn’t have anything they think will do better than a 2.4 in the post-DWTS slot, Castle will stay on. But to think that Castle’s audience will grow barring a miraculous upsurge in quality is pointless. The show is not good. Its characters and B-plots are amusing enough but the crime stories themselves are predictable, plodding, and a chore to watch. It’s like I’ve said before – hiring the guy who wrote Hollow Man to write a crime procedural isn’t exactly the greatest idea ever.

I’m flummoxed by how well House continues to do despite the fact that the show jumped the shark at least 2 seasons ago. As for Heroes, I wish NBC would can it and pick up this show instead:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ODl-kAhVsXY

  94. kel says:

Going by overall viewers, Trauma was the #1 show on NBC last night.

  95. The Other Tony says:

So is Heroes running stright through to the Olympics or are they planning on airing the last bunch of episodes after the Olympics? According to the Futon Critic there are 10 more episodes this season with two more scheduled to air in November.

I think NBC needs to make a decision soon if it will bring back Heroes next season so the writters have a chance to close out the storylines. I think those who have stayed around deserve that. Although it wouldn’t shock me if it came back for another 13 eps next season.

  96. TheJawa says:

The main issue with Castle is that it has to grow by word of mouth only. Every week it gains a million or so viewers without ABC doing anything to promote it. More and more people start watching Castle, and more and more people are falling for it. I personally have gotten 5 more people to start watching it in the past week, and 4 of them have already picked up Season 1 to catch up saying they love the show.

If ABC did any promoting of the show what so ever, people would watch an episode or two and get hooked. Its just a matter of getting people to watch it, and the show will hold better numbers. I think proof of its popularity is littered around the internet; people aren’t talking about this show so often because its a bad show. Its just that no one knows about it.

  97. Bill Gorman says:

kel, going by the number of letters in the show title, The Jay Leno Show was the #1 show on NBC last night. ;)

  98. TheJawa says:

@Shelly: Castle’s plots are predictable? So I assume from the very beginning last night you knew the final culprit, despite the fact that he wasn’t introduced until the middle of the show by a passing glance of the camera and 1 line.

Just because Castle isn’t NCIS or CSI doesn’t mean its a bad show. Its a totally different show from either of those, despite being in the same genre. Trying to compare it is apples and oranges.

  99. Jesse says:

It’s true, Trauma was the NBC show watched by the most people last night. Unfortunately, there weren’t enough in the 18-49 range advertisers covet.

  100. shelly says:

TheJawa, I’m not comparing Castle to anything, much less NCIS or CSI since I watch neither of those shows.

And yes, I do find Castle predictable to watch but that’s not the only reason I don’t like it; I find its mysteries badly written and the whole show boring but of course the people who like the show wouldn’t feel that way. When people are smitten with a particular show they tend to overlooks its flaws and enjoy it. Nothing I watch and like is perfect either, but I’ll overlook it because I’m invested in the show. I watched Castle its entire first season so it’s not like I didn’t give it a fair chance. My barometer for liking something is whether I find it well-written enough to have fun watching it or whether I want to watch it again and Castle is neither for me. But if it is for you, more power to you.

I’m not trying to explain why I personally don’t like the show – I’m trying to explain why I think the show isn’t catching on.

  101. Chucksmom says:

    What?

    ABC isn’t promoting Castle?

Have you check out the lastest issue of TV guide? Have you walked into a B&N lately?

Give me a break! Stop talking as though the network isn’t behind their own shows. That’s just silly.

  102. Chucksmom says:

    Shelly-

    You made some good arguements.

However, I feel for you right now because I think all the Fillion/ Browncoats may come and flame you. I hope not. That will just make some of the crazy fans appear crazier.

  103. shelly says:

Can anyone tell me how many episodes of Trauma are left to air? Or will NBC be pulling those too and airing something else in their place? Thanks in advance.

  104. Eric (Ohio) says:

“I’m flummoxed by how well House continues to do despite the fact that the show jumped the shark at least 2 seasons ago.”

    I… uhh…
Think you should Google exactly what jumping the shark means…

    House, has not done that.

  105. shelly says:

Chucksmom, actually I was/am a Browncoat, too, and I’ve been guilty of being a crazy fan as well. :) And I’ve worked with lawyers so crazy fans/flamers don’t scare me in the least, haha. But thanks for your concern.

  106. shelly says:

Eric, it has in my opinion. But let’s just (peacefully?) agree to disagree, shall we? :) Kumbaya!

  107. grr_argh says:

hey shelly, can you name the exact moment HOUSE jumped the shark? this is assuming you really know what jumping the shark means.

  108. Cullen says:

Robert, suggestion for a new daily post:

Take some of the stupid/ridiculous/pretentious comments from the overnight post and make a post about them.
You can post the quotes and then explain what is so wrong about them.

  109. Danny says:

I agree with Kim about “Castle”. I love Nate Fillion but his costar Stana Katic is so boring…or at least that was my first impression. I tried watching the premiere episode of the second season, but after 10 minutes, I deleted it off my dvr and I don’t plan revisiting the show ever again. I just knew I wouldn’t be able to put up with her for an entire show. I also agree about Robin Christopher! She’s an underrated actress from the soap opera world that’d be perfect starring opposite a charmer like Nate. But seriously, I’d consider hiring an orangutan over Stana.

  110. kel says:

LOL, Bill Gorman. I know the ratings are still crap, but you have to enjoy the irony of the canceled show doing better than the Great Savior of NBC (Leno) or the hasbeen/failure Next Big Thing (Heroes).

  111. kel says:

shelly, I think they have aired seven eps of Trauma, so there are six left.

  112. shelly says:

I never said it was an exact moment, grr argh. I don’t necessarily think that’s how shows jump the shark.

Maybe I should put it this way – it isn’t so much as it did jump the shark as it’s no longer the show I loved the first 3 seasons. And no, I’m not referring to the fact that all 3 fellows left, I mean the show is more now like Grey’s Anatomy-lite than what made it great – a medical mystery procedural. It seems like all the medical mysteries and ethical dilemmas and all the intelligent writing has taken a backseat to the increased focus on the characters’ personal lives and the neverending 13 drama and maybe that’s why I feel like it’s jumped the shark for me.

Of course I haven’t tuned into House this season so I could be wrong and maybe they’re getting the show back to its roots.

  113. Bad Robot says:

Yeah but Leno still has twice as many viewers as DULLHOUSE.

  114. shelly says:

Thanks for the response about Trauma, kel. I wonder if NBC will keep showing it despite its bottom of the barrel numbers…but then what would it replace it with that could do better other than The Biggest Loser repeats. Hmmm…

  115. Mark says:

    Shelly

You really thing House has Jumped the shark? If so when did that happened. I really dont thing Hous as jumped the shark. The ratings would lean to telling us that it hasnt!!

  116. AprilFox says:

I had to watch “Heroes” because my 14 year old likes the show. I told him that I won’t give up watching “House” again because “Heroes” was absolutely brutal to watch. Such garbage, can’t wait for NBC to give that show the ax. “Trauma” is a million times better and they cancel it. No justice.

  117. Danny says:

In regards to CASTLE’S ratings, I try not to get too excited until the Final’s are in(We’ve got really burned in the past)! With the pre-emption in the Pittsburgh Steeler market and Dancing With The Stars overrun, the Finals could possibly drop anywhere to an 2.4 or 2.2 – Lets hope for the best!

Last nights episode of CASTLE was my least favorite episode in the “Entire Series Run” so far! I’m not so sure during November Sweeps, you take the best part of the show, Castle & Beckett, Castle & Alexis, and put them on the back-burner of the episode to “Highlight” Captain Montgomery. I’m glad Ruben Santiago got an episode to shine in, but the mystery was mediocre at best; only Nathan Fillion’s charm, charisma & comedic timing made this episode seem better than it actually was.

Next weeks episode of CASTLE looks Great, SO TUNE IN NEXT MONDAY!

  118. A5J4D X says:

damn makes me bleed too to see heroes go down like this i think its cuz of house :(

  119. MnCastleFan says:

    Danny and Kim,

How can you say Stana Katic is boring? I have not seen an actress express so much with her facial expressions then she does. She has the looks, the accent and fun loving attitude that comes out of her on this show. Castle is a well written show for people who want good characters development with a murder to solve.

I missed the entire season 1 and after just 1 show this year, I was hooked. So far this season, I have converted about 10 new fans to the show. This is the type of show that will continue to grow and have a solid fan base then other shows that come and go.

  120. Don J says:

To answer Dan’s earlier question, Fringe does have a full 22 episode 2nd season. When FOX renewed it, they gave them 22 right away.

If House stays in the 12-13M range and keeps a 4.5-5.0, I think 24 will probably be around 10-11M and around a 4.0 when it takes over Lie to Me’s timeslot in January. I think the House/24 combination worked really well for FOX last season.

It does look like the CSI crossover helped Miami’s numbers a little. I watched it last night and for the most part, I thought it worked really well bringing Ray Langston to assist in the investigation.

  121. Carol says:

I love Castle and I hope that its ratings go up. It’s the 1 shows I watch on TV live besides Stargate Universe. I quit even bothering to record Heroes at the end of its last season when they killed off Nathan.

  122. kel says:

    Here’s the thing with Castle:

    * I love Nathan Fillion, IRL and in stuff like Serenity/Firefly/Dr. Horrible
    * I want to like the show, I even know some people who work on it
    * The grandmother and daughter are very funny

I keep trying to watch it. I have a season pass and everything, but…

    * Stana Katic is a black hole where sexual chemistry and quippage go to die
    * I don’t feel connected to any of the supporting detective characters
    * The murder cases/procedural stuff is DEAD BORING, except when Nathan is involved, but frankly he has to work SO HARD to overcome the sheer mass of the procedural stuff that it’s painful to watch
    * Without a romantic throughline that I’m invested in, the procedural crime stuff and the supporting-actor comedy are just not worth it.

I keep trying to watch Castle, but I really cannot for the life of me, find a hook to really latch on to.

For related reasons, I have stopped watching Bones (I don’t believe they are ever going to pay off B&B in satisfying way and all the other personal storylines like Zack and Hodgela and Brennan’s family life are frakked to hell) and I have started watching Criminal Minds (compelling crimes and equally compelling consistent and consistently interesting characters).

Long story short, I’m not sure Castle has what it takes to make it long-term. Hopefully the creators will learn from this experience and be able to construct a sounder show next time.

  123. Don J says:

I agree Stana Katic is not boring at all. She’s tall, very beautiful and has developed some solid onscreen chemistry with Nathan Fillion. She’s a decent actress too and plays the part of Kate with a fun loving attitude.

  124. Bad Robot says:

Since FRINGE did better with a HOUSE lead in last year, they should try moving FRINGE to Mondays 9pm. And air Season 8 of “24″ Thursdays at 9pm. Could Jack Bauer take on Greys and CSI successfully?

  125. Danny S says:

I’ve just changed my ID Name from(Danny) to Danny S, since there is another poster on here with the same name making negative comments about Stana Katic on Castle. I’m a Firefly Browncoat and Nathan Fillion fan, but am also a huge Castle & Beckett shipper(Nathan & Stana), so don’t confuse my post as Danny(Nov 10-09, at 10:50) with the other poster with my same previous name making negative comments about Stana Katic that I don’t agree with!!!

Sorry about this confusing post! Thanks.

  126. Peter V says:

I feel sorry for Heroes. If they had written the current storyline in Season 2, it probably would have held its audience. But those people got disgusted and left long ago. It’s incredibly tough to get an audience back once you’ve screwed up so badly.

Trauma is just, well, awful, but as an SF resident I find myself glancing at it just to see my fair city.

It’s bizarre to think that the network I used to watch most as a kid, NBC, may actually go out of existence.

  127. Bill Gorman says:

Danny S, best way to separate yourself from all those other Dannys out there is to create a gravatar. See the link above the comment box.

  128. Don J says:

I honestly can’t feel sorry for Heroes. I’m still watching and will watch until it gets the axe, but Tim Kring and his writing staff have only themselves to blame for the show free falling in the ratings since the middle of season 2.

  129. Kareem says:

Wasn’t last night’s much ballyhooed “threesome” episode of Gossip Girl last night? It didn’t help, if these numbers are the case. The show is up only slightly from last week.

Is Hilary Duff creating the ratings problems, or is the show just not as good as it was last year?

  130. Troy says:

Man, save for their Thursday night line-up – which is a hit quality-wise but not ratings-wise – NBC seriously needs to clean house and start developing new programs with talented people stat! Move Leno to Saturdays 8-11 and create an American equivalent to Sabado Gigante, that way Leno and his fans are happy. Hell, even Fridays would work. Anything to save face.

  131. Joe says:

The comments here that really interest me pertain to ROE and AOP in the post HIMYM slot. I really like AOP and feel like it fits better in the slot and appeals to a wider audience than ROE – Spade is liked by only so many people. I realize as some of you have stated that the key demos may be better for ROE in that slot, but AOP is a better show and has improved every episode (quality-wise) with the exception of one. I think it deserves the chance to get its feet set with a second season. Maybe put it on Wednesday in a new comedy block, if that is what CBS wants do, since I can’t be sure either the current tenants at 8 and 8:30 will survive.

  132. JaySin420 says:

I’d like to see these new Smallville writers take a shot at Heroes before they cancel it. And if they succeed at that, they should be hired to fix our economy lol.

  133. Farscapefan says:

Well… all I can say, is that Stana Katic in a very short time became my absolutely favourite actress after I “discovered” her on Castle late spring this year. She’s great as Beckett and I think she’s phenomenal actress.

  134. Easten76 says:

Look at the growth of Castle. That show is just simply amazing.

  135. R.G says:

I though the whole CSI trilogy would bring CSI Miami up to 16 million viewers.

  136. Ryan47 says:

Go Castle! The tortoise continues as the hares begin to drop out around it. Slow and steady.

  137. Easten76 says:

I think Castle keeps CSI: Miami from reaching those heights as its basically the same genre going head to head.

  138. Lee Ann says:

Can’t NBC just realize that Leno doesn’t need to be on during primetime and move the shows that should be on at 10 PM back to that time slot and get some stronger writers for their weaker shows. The network needs to do SOMETHING to salvage the rest of this season; as it is they are already toast…

And, if ABC does anything to Castle, they will have a revolt on their hands; granted I know it has a full season order; but the powers that be BETTER be on the right side of Castle at the upfronts or they just might be sorry. Castle fans are nearly as passionate as Firefly fans so…be forewarned!

  139. Robert Watson says:

I think the storylines are improving on Castle from last season. The show gets better every week.

  140. Kate says:

@Dan Your positive comments about Lie to Me always make me a little more optimistic. My thoughts are that Fox may try Lie to Me after Idol again, and just air the seven Past Life eps on Friday once Dollhouse is through. (I actually think that Fox moving Lie to Me from it’s post-idol slot was a little premature to begin with.)

@Tom Lie to Me is actually performing better than Fringe, though they’re both in tough time slots. (Fringe only got around 5 million viewers last week. Lie to Me averages between 7 and 8.)

@The_GodfatherSJP : “FOX isn’t on the hook for 22 episodes of Lie To Me. They ARE on the hook for 22 episodes of Fringe.”
    - The only thing with that is that they committed to a full season before the ratings decline this season. I don’t watch Fringe, so I don’t know about the fan base, etc., but I’ll take your word for it. : ) Obviously Fox is still standing behind Fringe… but, even with a tight spring sched, I think there will be room for both shows.

  141. pisher says:

Um–Lee Ann? Remember when FOX canceled Firefly?

How many people you think seriously stopped watching FOX because of that?

Oh, and remember the Firefly movie made by Universal? That flopped?

    Who starred in that movie?

ABC isn’t all that worried about a revolt of elderly people who fell asleep watching DWTS, methinks.

    :)

  142. mark says:

Guys, chill a bit. Castle is a bit ‘old school’ by design. It is aimed to a pre-CSI crowd and retro-loving types. Or those who aren’t CSI type watchers. It’s an 8pm show.
The ‘problem’ may be that given its romantic subtext it is hard to write away from that formula- and it is very formulaic to begin with, which isn’t good -and even when the sparkles work, it forces to condense the procedural part, which makes it a bit pat and trite. Chemistry-wise it’s tailored to him, not her; but since his character is not a good fit in the detective environment (unless going full Murder She Wrote, which they can’t) then the natural thing is to build her up, but to blossom on her own basically sabotages the whole premise (why would we need him, then?) and as some have picked up, this makes it boring because the procedural part needs to be comprised, therefore, inviting the cliché. That’s the problem, in my view.

  143. shelly says:

Kareem, I believe Gossip Girl’s ratings have been going down even before Hillary Duff appeared on the show. From what I’ve read, fans who are still watching actually like her character, at least so far (well maybe save for the threesome thing in last night’s episode).

  144. Outlander says:

What is amazing to me is that while Fox is still king of the ratings, CBS–supposedly the official old people network–is running away with Monday AND Tuesday nights.

  145. Gerry says:

If the adage “The opposite of love is not hate but indifference” is true
then CASTLE must be doing something right.
It seems to me the number of and intensity of CASTLE BASHING is increasing on this site.

Another old saying: “50 million Frenchmen can’t be wrong,” perhaps
    10.72 & (2.5/2.4?) Americans can’t be wrong eIther.

    Go CASTLE!

  146. Bill Gorman says:

Outlander, how exactly did CBS run away with last night’s ratings? They finished second to Fox.

  147. Ryan47 says:

Ahhhhh…my guess is confirmed. Pish doesn’t have a particular issue with Castle (though how could he, since he doesn’t actually WATCH the show, just the numbers), just with Fillion. I’ll state again that I could give a flying fig about Fillion–not a Firefly or Serenity fan or anything–but I must say that he absolutely makes that show work. The cast around him is fantastic as well, but Fillion is what pushes it over the top. LOVE his character. Just the right mix of immaturity, intelligence, cockiness, and humor all wrapped up.

So if you want to bash Fillion, pish, then fine…but from what I’ve seen with Castle, you don’t have much of a leg to stand on. If you want to bash CASTLE, however…well, on what grounds do you do so? Tell me, what do you even KNOW about the show you relish in hating? Because everyone I personally know that has given it a chance has loved it, from high school up to baby boomers. Tell me, pish, what do you not like about the show? Tell me that or I (and I think I speak for several others here_ will have no reason to even listen to your opinion, much less respect it.

  148. pisher says:

I have a hard time getting through even a single episode of Castle, to be sure, but I’ve sampled it here and there, and what really strikes me about it is the sheer misogyny of it–the female police detective isn’t even allowed to be a better shot than the mystery novel writer.

It’s very ordinary mediocre network TV drama. I really don’t know what to say to people who find greatness in it. Besides ‘read a book’–and I don’t mean ghostwritten mystery novels. That an actor does the book signings for.

    :D

  149. pisher says:

Gerry, going by your argument, American Idol is the best show on television.

    :D

  150. Parenthood says:

Shelly, remember a show called Moonlighting? Well, Castle is like that show. Now, I don’t watch Castle, but that’s what Ive noticed.

  151. mark says:

well, pisher, you say misogyny, I say old school. but you’re onto something. it’s the format of the amateur detective show (if cops are 100% smart it negates the premise) plus the pushy-romantic premise.
added up, it comes out with a whiff of politically incorrectness. I don’t think it’s intended but they need to address the issue.
I think the show is pushing for a Bones-type partnership, letting go of the instability of the premise, which is part of the attraction.
earlier this season they build her up (only a slight bit). long term that could work but right now, given the slight compression they have to make of the procedural, it makes her even more of a cliche, and thus boring.
the reason why the show has devoted fans is simple: it leans on the relationships without being primetime-soap intense. and that’s like getting a poodle for free.
I don’t like dogs but a free poodle is hard to resist.

  152. DMP says:

Great to see better numbers for Castle and Lie to Me. Both are more than deserving of the audience they are now garnering – more to come, I hope in the weeks ahead.
It is not hard to realize why House is the number one watched show around the world: what a terrific 1 hour piece of television last night!

  153. Gerry says:

Yo Dog…your post is really “pitchy” or should I say “pishy”.

While Idol’s talent level had been declining, though no as much as DWTS,
and that it has produced only one genuine Idol, Carrie Underwood (deserved it); I have little doubt it will crush in the ratings in terms
of total viewers and demos and find a place in the hearts and minds of millions and millions of Americans.

  154. CdeLeo says:

    OTH:1.2/3
    GG: 1.2/3
    JL: 1.2/3

I think they need to recalibrate the machine!

  155. Danny S says:

    Bill Gorman,

Thanks for the tip! I’ve known about this, just been too lazy to gravatar myself. Who would have thought that such a “rare” name as Danny would be used by someone else to bash something I love; hence, the radical moniker shift to Danny S.

To Mark: In regards to your observation about CASTLE.

Yes, CASTLE is ‘Old School’ with McMillan & Wife, The Rockford Files, Moonlighting, Remington Steele, The Thin Man(Nick & Nora Charles), being its inspiration. Castle’s greatest strength is its strong ensemble of characters! The ‘Old School’ quirky mysteries are its second strength. The greatest weakness CASTLE has is the running time of the show is slightly less than Forty-Three minutes, which is not enough time to do both a full-scale murder mystery and character rich show that the characters deserve. The old school shows that influenced this show did both Mystery & Characters as CASTLE does, but they had Forty-Eight Minutes of actual screen time back then, which is plenty for a self-contained TV Episode. Nathan Fillion will always outshine evan a mediocre murder mystery, as in last night’s episode; and the strong characters will always be more interesting than the murder mystery to the majority of us fans! Mark, you made it sound as if the characters were the weak link – they are its biggest asset.

Some solutions to get over the Forty-Three minutes limitation. Out of a 22-Episode season take three or four episodes and drop the murder mystery completely and focus on the daily lives and troubles of the characters. Treat these episodes like an episode of “GILMORE GIRLS.” Detective Kate Beckett comes into the Precinct early one morning and picks up a file on her desk and goes home, and we start a chain of events that blends all the characters quirky private lives, connecting them with each other, like the opening to Superman III and screwball comedies of the 30’s & 40’s. High Brow sophisticated comedy like “The Honeymooners,” “I Love Lucy,” and “The Gilmore Girls.” Get Kate Beckett involved in Castle’s personal life with Alexis & Martha; and Vice Versa with Castle in Beckett’s private life. Give Castle a Male Best Friend and Beckett a Female Best Friend to strengthen these concepts evan more.

Take two episodes a season that are “FILM NOIR” in nature. Richard Castle sitting at his desk as the Murder Mystery writer tells us a story that goes from a narration in Castle’s Mind onto the screen(like Private Detective Phillip Marlowe); but instead of Phillip Marlowe we get Nathan Fillion as Derrick Storm working on a case as a hard-boiled detective who comes across NYPD Detective Nikki Heat(Played by Stana Katic). They cross each others paths pursuing the same case & culprit and become intertwined in each others lives; except unlike Castle pursuing Beckett, the hunter and the hunted are reversed. Use the main CASTLE CAST to fill in roles in the mystery. The actors who play good detectives Ryan & Esposito are now bad guys in this fantasy pulp-fiction!

You shorten a 22-Episode season down to about 16 or 17 murder mysteries and hopefully get a higher quality in the mysteries you do get. The actors get to explore different things to satisfy their acting palette, and we as fans get something exciting and fresh – Win Win Situation!

Sorry if my post was too long!

  156. Gerry says:

    Good take from Danny S.

One of MOONLIGHTING’S best episodes was THE DREAM SEQUENCE ONLY RINGS TWICE.

The season opener of BONES had a similar vibe with Booth’s coma.

and JAG used fantasy episodes to get Harm & Mac together

  157. vsaint says:

I’m pretty sure Past Life will air at least once behind IDOL, like Canterbury’s Law did.
    Doesn’t IDOL air 1-2 episodes Thursday 8pm?
I could see Lie To Me and Fringe getting at least 1 airing behind IDOL, to see if anything can be improved.
But FRINGE does have prioity being that it had better ratings and has fallen hard, as oppose to Lie To Me which has been ok ratings both years.

  158. Theoacme says:

Anyone recall what happened to Moonlighting after Willis and Shepherd “did it”?

Talk about jumping the shark – that’s probably why Katic is warming very, very slowly to Castle…

…and who says the best sex is in-your-face on-camera? Remember the Barney Miller episode where Yemana takes a prostitute home for Christmas? Or the one where Dietrich and the deaf prostitute go out for Chinese?

Of course, Castle gets this – Katic, after all, works at the ol’ one-two :D

  159. Lurker says:

Interestingly, I find myself watching Castle instead of Mentalist this season. Something in the chemistry of the Mentalist team changed and turns me off and the women characters are too glam to be believable anymore. I don’t know–something has snapped. CSI, SVU and CSI:Miami, used to be my mainstays but I just lost interest last season and stopped watching them. It was mostly the combination of Life and Mentalist, I think (I really miss Life). But this season the Mentalist schtick feels stale. Last year I wanted to like Castle but eventually gave up. It’s really grown on me. Castle is the only crime show I watch anymore. Strange really.

  160. forg says:

Good thing TBBT’s ratings went up to 4.7 in the finals, matching last week’s numbers and avoiding what could have been their season low. The trend is good so far this season:
    4.7 – 5.3 – 4.7 – 5.0 – 5.3 – 4.7 – 4.7

    I’m impressed with HIMYM’s stability with 3.5

  161. Gerry says:

It wasn’t Dave & Maddie doing the deed that brought down MOONLIGHTING, it was Cybill Sheperd’s
mid 30’s pregnancy which takes about a year to recover from. America gave Jill Hennessy and Leah Rimini a year
to get back in top form and their shows survived

  162. Ash says:

HIMYM is scoring 9M and 3.5 against House and Dancing with the Stars. That’s pretty impressive. I wonder how well it would do on Two and a Half Mans or Big Bang Theorys Timeslot. They kinda flipped a coin at CBS, and HIMYM got the more copetetive timeslot than BBT.

  163. cammy says:

Castle is not misogynistic. It is, in fact, one of the better shows on TV in terms of the portrayal of women. They’re allowed to be friends who can talk about things other than their romantic lives, they’re allowed to be tough (see Lanie smacking down the boys on a regular basis)…there are too many things to go through in a comment here. But one salient example is apt. In the Halloween episode, Alexis says that her friend was trading kisses for drinks, yet the show *never* implies she was therefore asking to be drugged (and never shies away from the horrible consequences of leaving her there to be date raped, which Alexis thankfully didn’t). And it did the whole thing without being explicit or moralizing, in the span of a few lines. The show won’t beat you over the head with its women-are-people-too message, but it’s apparent throughout.

As for what killed Moonlighting, TV folks recently discussed the myth that it was getting the couple together. It’s not true. You can find the explanation here:

    http://www.npr.org/blogs/monkeysee/2009/09/what_really_happened_to_moonli_1.html

  164. Kareem says:

    @Shelly

I don’t have anything against Hilary Duff, but I’ve been totally underwhelmed with the show. The “threesome” scene seems like a desperate attempt to pull the ratings up. Compared to OTH, it’s not working.

  165. Theoacme says:

Gerry – my big sister would virulently disagree with you, where I would merely smile…

…the fact that the writers had Maddie marry someone after knowing them only a few hours at the end of season four wouldn’t have happened if they hadn’t done it indicates that the shark factor cannot be ignored…

…although it’s definitely arguable that Shepherd’s pregnancy was also a critical factor, as well as Willis’ burgeoning film career at that time…

…fortunately, neither Katic nor Fillion have any of that to worry about – methinks Nielsen and the Disney execs are more than enough for them to worry about…

…especially since Moonlighting was also on ABC :o

  166. The Punisher says:

Will these idiots move Heroes to another night sheeesh?

  167. Ryan47 says:

@pish: Fair enough. Thanks for answering my question. I disagree, of course, but that’s not always a bad thing, now is it?

At least I know where you’re coming from. Just try and judge is by the show rather than Fillion, eh? I think we’ll all get along better that way.

For the record, I’m with cammy 110%. I think the portrayal of Beckett and Alexis and even Lanie is a very refreshing change from the norm of television today.

  168. Dan says:

Don J – Thats what I thought. Since Fringe is owned by WB it was likely given a 22 episode season early while FOX’s in house Lie to Me just got 13. I still think Lie to Me will get more eps but it will have to be in a new slot. Maybe shared with Past Life Tuesdays or burned off on fridays.

  169. shelly says:

Kareem, agreed. I gave up Gossip Girl after the first season myself. It’s just gotten too repetitive, Serena and Blair keep fighting and making up, Jenny keeps trying to figure out the Queen Bee thing, blah blah blah.

  170. luis says:

the problem with heroes is they need to mix things up no more of peter vs sylar and claire being caught in the middle no more sylar is the strongest they need to bring in new people with powers and let them find there way like heroes season one and let them be on there on not linked with peter and the gang they got on there now a reboot thats what they need as well as they need to kill off some people and keep them dead none of that tracy stuff

  171. Skouse says:

Wow i would of thought house would get a bigger audience not 12.mill cause the episode was amazing, i had tears in my eyes…. and the fact it was all about house, wilson and cuddy.

i don’t understand what the demo is though and why we should worry about it, isnt it the number of people watching making the show great? not the demo

  172. Dan says:

Skouse – I used to think that but it turns out the demo is more important than the total amount of viewers. Thats why everyone seems so worried about Castle despite the series getting 10 million overall. Demos mean a lot for a series but overall viewers are still important too.

  173. Julia says:

No, overall viewers are not important.

  174. Skouse says:

But how do they get the high demo, they Obviously don’t extrapolate from the ratings so how do we know its good?

  175. Julia says:

Skouse, the A18-49 demo rating is the percentage of adults 18-49 who watched. So of the total viewers, they count up those in the demo, and figure out what percentage of the total number of adults 18-49 with TVs in the United States is. When it comes to broadcast network primetime, anyone who falls outside of the A18-49 demo doesn’t matter.

  176. Skouse says:

    Nice! thanks:)
so therefore house is the best tv show, even better than NCIS, double Wow:)
    Good on them!!

  177. Phil says:

Abc’s mid season is on wikipeida. Is there info right because it says lost is on thursdays and flashfoward on wensday and the middle is on monday??

  178. Julia says:

Phil, do you have a link? There is usually a source listed on Wiki (and if not it’s completely unreliable.)

  179. Phil says:

I just went to check on it and they have taken away there mid season so I must of been fake

  180. Jake says:

@Phil yes I saw the mid season on wikipeida and I went to check it again and it was gone =(

  181. bob terns says:

All this Moonlighting talk gives Glen Gordon Caron a headache!

This is what really caused that show to go down: Cybill unable to get off the can for filming due to her IBS.

  182. Julia says:

Looking through the history, there’s no source for the majority of it. Looks like complete speculation on the part of some people who wanted a bit of fun on Wiki.

  183. vsaint says:

Lie To Me just doesn’t work for me.
Tim Roth is good, but the rest of the show is so generic, boring.
It seems like a fight between FOX and CBS.
Fringe beat up on Eleventh Hour last year, getting cancelled.
Mentalist smacked Lie To Me, but just hung on to get 13 episode order.

  184. Julia says:

Ha! At one point the schedule on Wiki had Lost airing on Fridays.

  185. vsaint says:

It does say Ugly Bettey will move to Wednesday midseason.
If that’s true, LOST Tuesday or Thursday.

  186. Riff Rafferty says:

shelly writes, “Thanks for the response about Trauma, kel. I wonder if NBC will keep showing it despite its bottom of the barrel numbers…but then what would it replace it with that could do better other than The Biggest Loser repeats. Hmmm…”

Certainly not the thing in my gravatar. It’s not its bottom of the barrel numbers that are the problem. It’s its bottom of the barrel quality and top of the barrel price tag. As for airdates, the finalized ones are below. I think the 10th one is on Nov. 30 but don’t quote me on that. It’s preempted most of December.

    1. 101 28 Sep 09 Pilot
    2. 103 5 Oct 09 All’s Fair
    3. 102 12 Oct 09 Bad Day at Work
    4. 104 19 Oct 09 Stuck
    5. 105 26 Oct 09 Masquerade
    6. 107 2 Nov 09 Home Court
    7. 108 9 Nov 09 That Fragile Hour
    8. 106 16 Nov 09 M’aidez
    9. 109 23 Nov 09 Thank You

  187. Steve says:

    Hey “thatdude90210″

Isn’t appropriate that Jay Leno does his best following a show called “The Biggest Loser”, which is what you are if you watch either show!

  188. JohnW says:

Enjoying Castle and glad to see the numbers are holding and even going up a tick. The chemistry is great and they are getting a bit better at developing the rest of the cast. I do like the idea of maybe spreading a case over two shows to better develop the case aspect of the show while able to still spend time developing the characters more.

While the Firefly movie (Serenity) wasn’t a box office success (only $38.8 mil world wide with production costs of about $40mil), it was a critical success and did very well in DVD/Blu-ray sales. So calling it a “bomb” isn’t entirely correct.

  189. jay says:

Mark’s debate above is along the lines of what I posted after Castle’s first episode. Since I straddle both Boomers and Gen X, I could really feel what they were trying to do and see it was mediocre – not a garish failure even from the Old School side ( like Hank ) or the Sex in the City New School side ( Cashmere Mafia, Lipstick.) I wondered, after it was over, if it would have been better trying for camp like the old Silk Stalkings show, admittedly a cheap 1980’s cable show but one that was scene for scene quite erotic, building sexual tension and then deflating it each episode instead of in a long story arc. ( The show with Stepfanie Kramer and Fred Dryer was a similar example from the 80’s, tho to me Kramer far outdid Dreyer in the sexy dept. ) Bones and some other shows use a novel and I think decent approach – a chilly yet very cute intellectual who is both a seduction – not wham bam – target for the macho cop,and a very good role model for women. ( The Deschanel character is based on an actual person. Far bettyer that than to base a characyer on a so-called psychic, which seems to be the default mode for TV weriters.

  190. zeker says:

Sorry, I know this is most nitty of nitpicks.

I looked at the numbers and it took me a couple of takes to get the demo/share for The Big bang theory. I thought “when did we start getting 3 decimal places”

    You have: 4.511

    You mean 4.5/11

    /crazy nitpick

  191. BANG says:

    BANG! BANG!…. BANG BANG!
HEROES WAS FINISHED THE MOMENT TIM KRING STOLE THOSE NYC ARTISTS IP.
LOL!!!! TIM KRING IS A OLD ASS LOSER AND
    JEFF ZUCKER IS A SUCKER.
    BANG! BANG!

  192. Dan says:

But will UB actually move to wednesdays? Hopefully ABC can annoucne there sched so we can find out.

  193. girl says:

Skouse: I agree that that episoed was great and I inknow way agree with the peopel who think House “jumped the shark” (hate that phrase). I admit that last season was not great but this one is and those who stopped wathing should tune back in. Its nothing like Greys (nor was it ever). Greys is rediculous, sure House focused a little more on tehe relationships the last season but in a tasteful was not like Greys where everyone sleeps with everyone. also this season, they had some pretty awsome medicle cases (guy comming back from the dead anyone?)
and Anthony i am also infuriated at the rating DWRS gets cuz its boring as hell and the people are not “stars” at all. luckly, even though it has high viewership it has a pretty low demo so we know the only people watching are the elderly who probly fall asleep.
