30 Rock Gives Shout Out to ESPN’s Around The Horn

Posted on 13 November 2009 by Robert Seidman

A good Thursday night of television that in addition to Fringe’s Dr. Walter Bishop actually wearing a tinfoil hat, included a 30 Rock shout out to one of my favorite shows, ESPN’s Around The Horn (5pm ET).  The spoof,  Sports Shouting, is billed as the time slot competition that always beats the fictional TGS in the ratings.

I wish Around The Horn could add fake crawls under the panelists.  If you have it on your DVR, though the two spoof scenes aren’t on the screen long, it’s worth using the slow motion feature to catch the crawls.  My favorite was the one of all the soccer scores where every score was 0-0 (see picture below).

So in the picture above a Woody Paige clone in the top left and I’m not sure if that’s Tim Cowlishaw clone top right or a mashup between him and Bill Plaschke.   A raging J.A. Adande in the lower left, or is that a raging  Kevin Blackistone?  Jay Marriotti clone lower right.  With the exception that they didn’t find a way to work host Tony Reali in, they nailed it!

In the picture below Tracy Jordan in one of his many (according tot he story) guest appearances.

As of this writing yet, the 30 Rock episode is not up yet on Hulu, though it is available on NBC.com.

P.S. I didn’t really love last night’s Fringe episode, but the tin foil hats on Walter and Astrid made for a funny image and a not-so-subtle poke at itself and the pseudo-science the show covers.

I like the one fake crawl above that reads:

“Jacksonville residents ‘no longer aware’ of Jaguars” LOL!

In a somewhat related story, Tony Kornheiser on the show that follows “Horn,” “Pardon the Interruption,” dropped a couple of cable news host names on the show. On Thursday, he introduced Tony Reali on the “Oddsmakers” segment as “Anthony Joseph Lou Dobbs Reali” – which is clearly a running gag, as whichever name is mixed into Reali’s name by Tony is usually lifted from a current news story. (Lou Dobbs’ name, by the way, STILL the top trending name/phrase on Google News’ “In The News” widget.) But earlier this week, it was a little more concentrated. At the top of the show, Mike Wilbon usually feeds a story or headline to Tony to make a comment or joke about, i.e. Wilbon playing the straight man to Korny’s personality. So Wilbon says, “Hey Tony, what do you think about the Brits being named the worst looking people in the world?” And Tony says, “I don’t know, that Brit Hume is kind of cute.” I wonder if that clip will end up on O’Reilly’s “Reality Check” segment anytime soon.

The lack of fans at Jags games is why that team is marked for the Los Angeles market.

  3. Chuck Tranberg says:

30 Rock has rocked this season.

  4. SleeperActiveCompass says:

I concur on last night’s Fringe. By the middle of the episode it was just background noise for me. Did they seriously think we wouldn’t figure out it was the kid?

  5. sushiroll says:

Fringe was awesome last night. A solid standalone episode! It wasn’t about the fact that the kid was the one controlling it, it was about the fact that MD was completely behind the mind control in the first place!

  6. josh says:

    i didn’t like the jaguars part…leave my team alone…lol

  7. CK says:

Got to love 30 Rock. Endlessly clever with satire and gags so fast the ratings elude it.

  8. V says:

ATH is an amazing show. Kudos to 30 Rock!

  9. Jon says:

I’m a season ticket holding Jaguars fan, I am very displeased with the ticker line bashing my team and my city. I will no longer be watching 30 rock, apparently they feel they have enough fans that they can insult and entire city and not worry about it.

The Jaguars need my support and they come first, way to punch a city when it is down 30 rock.

  10. Julia says:

How much do you wanna bet that Jon has never seen an episode of 30 Rock and only knows about the Jaguar line because of this post? ;)

  11. Bring on the KC Royals fans then, that crawl winds up reading “KC Royals accidentally left off 2010 MLB Schedule”.

  12. izikavazo says:

How can anyone harp on 30 Rock when they can manage to have five or six jokes simultaneously in a single screencap?

  13. 30ROCKs says:

I just watched the episode and I didn’t catch the Pitino scroll. That is HILARIOUS!!!!

  14. Taylor says:

I am a royals fan and thought the part about the royals was hilarious.

  15. Drew says:

As a White Sox fan, the Royals bit rocks.

All they need is something like “Ozzie Guillen says a whole sentence in English, Chicago shocked”

  16. dave says:

Wow, two whole jags fan on an obscure post of a niche website. Who’d of thought that such a great percentage of the jaguars fanbase would be tv ratings fans. On a related note, the Jacksonville ratings for the last Jaguars home game: 0.0 HH, 0 viewers, 0.0 18-49.

  17. david says:

Three jags fans now dave. 30 Rock is a lame show anyways, and that is where I assume you got your jokes.

  18. Jesse says:

Considering i’ve heard Reali use “That’s a Dealbreaker, Ladies” a few times, it doesn’t surprise me that they’d do some sort of a nod to ATH.
