People seem to want to have a discussion about which browser is best on this slow Saturday.
Here’s the access info for the top 10 browser/operating system for the last 30 days there were 144 combos over the last 30 days, but I only included the top 25:

“People seem to want to have a discussion about which browser is best on this slow Saturday.”
Do they? Do they really?

What is counted as 1 visit?
#1 hurts me.
if you open a new browser window and visit, or travel here via another site (google click, referral link, you were on ESPN.com and typed TVbytheNumbers.com in the address bar, etc).
I’m wondering what percentage I make up of #9…
AppleStinx, here’s a little more info on how Google counts visits:
Visits represent the number of individual sessions initiated by all the visitors to your site. If a user is inactive on your site for 30 minutes or more, any future activity will be attributed to a new session. Users that leave your site and return within 30 minutes will be counted as part of the original session.
well…at least I’m glad IE is below 50%
Had no idea one could know which browser and operating system could be determined from a website hit. Big Brother is watching.
I’m surprised Camino for Mac is higher than Opera for Mac. Camino is the most useless browser ever.
I’m a Firefox/Windows guy myself. It surprises me how many people still use IE.
Julia, at those levels it could be one guy who really loves Camino and really, really loves TVbytheNumbers.
Firefox is a piece of crap in my mind. I will always be with Internet Explorer!
It’s always disappointing for a die hard Opera user like me to see the statistics. I started using Firefox when it first came out, so it’s not that I hate it, but I switched to Opera when they finally got rid of the ads for free users and I haven’t turned back since.
There are still people who use Netscape? Why? Isn’t it abandonware?
Poor Opera. It’s the oldest of the post IE era 3rd party browsers and it constantly gets passed up by newer brower set ups.
The good news is there’s no need to make it IE is “American Idol” and Opera is “Dollhouse”. Opera was around for Windows 3.1 in 1994 when I had my first web site (I was a Netscape beta guy at the time). Opera has been around for over 15 years, only Law & Order predates it
I used Opera for a while when I was pissed off with Safari and couldn’t stand Firefox. But it started crashing too often and usually not able to recover my previous session, so I switched back to Safari.
lol which one of you is reading this on a Wii?
I’m one of those 10,500 people that use Windows and Safari.
But I’m surprised Netscape still exists! I haven’t seen someone use that in a lonnnng time.
Oh …I did not realized this post was a new one
. Again …do you know what is a “mozilla compatible agent/iphone” ?
CK, “Had no idea one could know which browser and operating system could be determined from a website hit. Big Brother is watching”
Oh, we know so much more that that. So. Much. More.
Uh I know Mozilla is playing around with some things for iPhone in beta (though allegedly not an actual browser) but i have no idea
Thanks I’ve heard something similar as well …. interesting …
So does that mean that there are TVBTN fans on the Mozilla development team?
What? Complaining about Netscape? When I had a web site a few years ago, a few hits in the logs turned up from WebTV!
And to all the Opera fans, here’s something to keep your spirits up. Remember that Opera can be set to mask itself as another browser for some or all sites (I have to do this with Amazon to get it to use the more nifty wishlist interface features). Maybe, just like the dinosaurs in the Dilbert comic strip, all of the Opera users aren’t gone, just hiding.
safari may not be the most used but is hands down the best browser
I still use IE no matter how much anyone wants to bash it…Yeah, that’s right. I said it! It works, it’s included, and it gets me around the web…What more does a person need?
I don’t even understand the complaints about IE actually. I’ve never had any problem with it, function or security wise. If you know anything about online security you know that it’s not up to your browser to keep you safe, it’s up to you! That said, I also don’t understand the VISTA OS hate. I’ve had it for almost 2 years and it works like a dream. Not a single problem.
Only a few using Opera/Mac combo, works like a charm for me, wouldn’t change it even thou Safari is sometimes faster (Opera has a lot more options).
I still can’t belive 50% are using IE, I switched to Opera from IE on windows back in 2001.
So in those 144 combos, are there any IE on Mac users left? Now that was a horrible browser.
my main complaint with i.e is speed lots of delay and waiting time constantly unresponsive 90% of the time i.e gets the job done its the other 10% which really frustrates me with i.e which why safari is the best fastest web browsing and reliable 100% of the time
Safari depends on a fast connection to look like its fast. With a dial up connection(its all i’ve got in some places), I’ve noticed IE works a lot better than safari in displaying pages. A lot of times safari will error out on the same page IE has no problems with.
Best OS: Windows
Best browser: Firefox
using windows o.s i timed(i counted by Mississippi’s) how long it took to get from google to tvbynumbers from best to worst safari 2 seconds, internet explorer 3 seconds, firefox 3 seconds, opera 5 seconds
A very timely post. For the last few days, I’ve been dealing with the ad at the top of this page covering the headings/tabs. Grrr. Tried another browser, no luck.
Oh well.
Seriously!? People still use IE??
Thanks for the explanation, Robert. I usually have TVbytheNumbers open in one window, with a few topics of interest running in tabs. Currently nine tabs are open (going a little overboard today, although most are just like bookmarks for later reading). I’m assuming then, these would count as nine visits just for now.
Loooool, Playstation and Wii – how do you manage people?
I’m sad to see there are no Amigas on that list though!
I use safari (on a mac) but have been increasingly annoyed with it constantly crashing lately. Is there any way to get the ‘each tab is independent’ feature or do I need to wait for Chrome for Mac to get it?
AppleStinx, unless you have them open in different browsers (like one in Firefox, one in Safari, one in IE, etc.) they’ll count as one visit.
“And to all the Opera fans, here’s something to keep your spirits up. Remember that Opera can be set to mask itself as another browser for some or all sites” – Joseph
So maybe that means the scores for all those other browsers are actually masks for Opera. For me, Opera wins hands down. Not only is it much more highly configurable than other browsers to suit one’s individual taste in terms of features and skins, but it really is, as it claims, the fastest browser out there. It can sometimes take me half-a-minute to get somewhere on IE, but I’m there in half-a-second on Opera, and that’s at least a second or two better than the overhyped and somewhat bloated Firefox. I tried all kinds of browsers, but bottom line, Opera is the only one to use, especially when speed is of the essence. In fact, here’s a neat trick I only stumbled upon recently. I don’t know if this works for other browsers, but if you just type into the address window where you want to go without using quotes, the http://, www. and/or .com – i.e. tvbythenumbers – Opera will get you there. Definitely no such luck with IE, at least not with version 7.
Wy, Firefox and Safari have had that “trick” for years. But, yeah, IE is way behind the times on that one.
Interesting Statistics for this site:
I have 9 computers running windows, linux and osx, I have tried firefox, explorer, safari, conqueror, and chrome. I keep coming back to firefox.
In the current iterations Chrome is fastest, I like it’s clean style but it does not have the add-ons and functionality that firefox does.
Plus you can run Firefox on OSX, Windows and Linux. Not sure if safari has a linux version but explorer does not.
Anyways so far I will stick with firefox and I have moved dozens and dozens of people over to it after I fix all the crap on their computers that they get from visiting infected sites that load malware active-x controls on their computers.
I keep my eye on google’s chrome however as it is definitely an up and comer and is currently the speed king.
Every now and then I must use explorer to visit a site and then after I while I realize that my browsing response is bad and that I forgot to switch out of IE and back to firefox.
Funny story, I used to be with a software company that ran on mid-range computers back in the very early days of the internet and we had some stuff running on a PC under netscape at a computer show that was sponsored by Microsoft. Bill Gates came over to the booth and was less than impressed to say that least! We were so green with the internet that we did not even know that Microsoft even really had a browser.
Mike, did you ever see those pictures from before xbox 360 was released, when they were demoing it at E3, and it was running on a Mac.
So even Gates’ own people prefer non-MS hardware/software.
im one of the ones who visited you on ps3, how exciting
Julia, there were 48 visits from Macintosh/Internet Explorer combo. it ranked 53rd.

In Internet Explorer, type tvbythenumbers in the address window and press [Ctrl]+[Enter].
Yeah it’s now cool to diss IE & Microsoft nowadays, I can’t stand any other browser, IE 8 is the best, it provides everything I need, & whenever I have a problem & try using Firefox instead, I end up with 10 more others, I even prefer IE6 to Firefox3 & it’s a completely useless piece of crap
I just logged into this thread under both Firefox and IE to confound the graph.
And partly because I wanted to hurt thedemonhog.
Even the browser choice it’s becoming a religion war ahahahahah
I use Firefox and sometimes Chrome. I wonder if it’s possible for stats involving which version of Windows people use? Whether or not people who frequent this site are early adopters or still using Vista/XP.

This seems like the “Everyone I know watches it on a streaming site or DVR+4 instead of live in a multi-hour marathon of viewing” excuse for browsers.
Go Firefox! That’s what I use for this site.
Harold, on the one hand, that’s sort of what I was going for, but on the other hand, there is some truth to it. There are a significant number of sites that detect the browser, then simply refuse to let you use their site/shopping cart/whatever if you’re not running IE or firefox. Most of the time the sites run fine with Opera, but the developer’s simply too lazy to check (or using non-standard code).
For instance, if Amazon detects Opera, they don’t have the drop-down arrow next to the wishlist button that lets you pick which wish list to send it to, the scrolling list of other users’ similar purchases, etc. By telling Opera to claim to be Firefox when on the Amazon site, all of those extra features get enabled and work fine. It might have changed, but Staples’ site had similar issues, Comcast’s web mail is a major offender and some online banks refused to let you use Opera. Sadly, lazy and non-standard developers necessitated Opera’s masking feature.
Since Opera can be set to dafault to spoofing IE or Firefox, it’s quite possible there may be a lot of Opera users who have done this to avoid the annoyance of getting a “this browser is incompatible with this website” type message every time they go to add something to a shopping cart.
As a web developer hobbyist, seeing stats like these never fails to make me sad.

But is it #1 on iTunes and BitTorrent sites?
Opera can never be the #1 browser (or something most people have even heard of) unless its supporters conduct a strong skywriting campaign.
Why are so many people visiting this site from their iPhone?
(well, “so many” is only 1.42%, but still)
From Ars Technica, world wide browser share as of October, 09:
Internet Explorer-64.64%
Firefox-24.07%
Safari-4.42%
Chrome-3.58%
Opera-2.17%
@Mumbo – Because public transport can get boring.
Private transport too.
(Stuck in barely moving traffic, checking to see if ratings are in yet. I want to know if SNF’s water cooler talk translated to ratings.)
it did, but “water cooler” talk is probably 100% about going for it on 4th & 2 on your own 28 yard line with the lead and not much time left. I think that and the subsequent come-from-behind victory all happened after 11pm.
lol there were more search engines crawlers than netscape users.
Ok I just had to try this running under the GoogleOS preview released a couple of days ago. It is running in a virtualbox emulating linux, ubuntu on a windows 7 host. Wonder how this shows up in your statistics
