Did CNN Give Lou Dobbs $8 million To Leave?

Posted on 16 November 2009 by Bill Gorman

dobbs-lou

This puts the report that Dobbs walked away from $9 million in question.

CNN was so sick of Lou Dobbs, it gave him an $8 million severance package to leave, The Post has learned.

“They wanted him out,” according to a source.

  1. Sylvia Knowles says:

    good for Lou!

  2. dan says:

    now thats desperation >_^

  3. Baroness Fischer says:

Well, I know I couldn’t watch CNN in the evening because of him and others. But mostly because of him, and he’s gotten wackier in recent months.

  4. dj109 says:

Sucked for him to be the only conservative voice on a far left news channel anyway. Congrats to Lou for getting out of that dump…

  5. dovepage says:

Whatever you did to get rid of him, CNN, thank you.

  6. dave says:

dj109, Lou Dobbs was hardly conservative. Wacky, yes. Conservative, no. Of course Glenn Beck fans might not know the difference.(conservative AND wacky)

Anyways It seems like CNN’s strategy is trying to reposition itself as a news network, rather than an opinion network in hopes to differentiate itself from FNC and MSNBC. Paying Dobbs to leave helps them do that, as his reputation as an opinion journalist is to entrenched to change.

  7. dave says:

Oh and dj109, and I’m curious to what makes CNN far left. MSNBC, sure. Left, maybe. Far left? Name one thing said on the network that is far outside of the mainstream. Or is anything more liberal than Ronald Regan constitute a far left opinion?

  8. iamweasel says:

Anyone who uses Glenn Beck as an avatar should be and would be deeply questioned for believabilty even if they said the sky was blue.

  9. Dan-O says:

I’m hopeful that CNN will follow through with positioning itself as a “just the facts, ma’am” news channel.

For a while, it was if FOX News was slanted for conservatives, MSNBC was slanted for liberals, and CNN was slanted for the stupid. One afternoon this summer, I had CNN on for a little over an hour. They brought up Jon&Kate’s domestic situation three times.

  10. D.J. says:

    DJ109 (no relation!!),

Where have you been? Lou Dobbs is “Mr. Independent!”

  11. Greg Whitacre says:

Lou Dobbs helped bring Acorn to the forefront, along with immigration, and did many Americans justice schooling everyone on Health Care while focusing on other Countries Health Care etc… Whether you like Glenn Beck or not, he too has shown America the behind the seens in Washington, with Vern Jones, Anitta Dunn, ACorn etc. Yes, Glenn is nutty and Lou is opinionated too. But at least there honest about it. I appreciate there candor and I hope Lou appears on another News station who does not have a paid agenda.

  12. Scott Jensen says:

If some news source other than The Post verifies this, then I might believe it.

  13. iamweasel says:

Lou Dobbs and Glenn Beck do not deal in honesty. They may take opne sliver of truth and for the uninformed are able to turn it into some major item. They lead sheeple by the nose into thinking they have hit some major motherlode of Washington insider truth.
The people who buy into either of those lunatics are the same people that that joke about buying ocean front property in Kentucky was based on.

  14. Sam says:

These people aren’t honest, just because they tell you what you think is true doesn’t make them honest. It makes them smart enough to know they can make money off of you.

  15. Burn-E says:

Dave: What makes CNN far left? They ignored repeated Acorn scandals and ignored reporting on a half dozen or more Obama appointees with ties to communist organizations or praise for communist mass murders. The only difference between that and praise for Nazis? Communists killed about seven times as many people as Nazis did. CNN ignored (as far as I could tell) how Laredo and other border cities were facing mass murder at the hands of Mexican drug gangs (though maybe Dobbs mentioned it, but I didn’t watch him). They may have ignored the fact that Phoenix became the #2 “kidnapping capitol” city of the world due to the drug violence, but I stopped watching CNN by then. Turning a blind eye to crime on the border is typical for the left because if you admit there might be a problem, the term “racist” is never far behind, even if you are never worried about race but only about safety.

Is any of that far left enough for you? But CNN made sure to give extensive live coverage to Balloon Boy, while Beck gave time to talk about Obama’s political appointees. Who is really wacky?

Of course they were admitted to extensive coverage of Iraq by Saddam’s aides in the run up to the war, but only if they were willing to cover the news his way. That’s not really to the political left, but more of a matter of pandering to a dictator.

  16. Sam says:

Where do I sign up to NOT work for $8 million?

  17. ad says:

It sucks now a days that when you put out the truth with no spin you are labled conservative and not just someone with a brain!!! When you are young you are a liberal it shows you have a heart when you get older you become a conservative it shows you have a brain!! This administration has done a very good job at demonizing anyone that questions there authority or plans. Hope Dobbs comes back bigger than ever and cnn belongs on sat. morning cartoons that is about as close to the news as they get !

  18. iamweasel says:

Where were you conservatives for the last 8 years? Granted Obama hasnt surrendered a bit fo the power that Bushie had but Bushie abused it far more then Obama has so far. See how easy Fox leads you people around? And you claim you garned more brains as you got older? No, you just allow others to lead you into their way of thinking. I enjoy watching people trying to justify their ignorance…it really is funny. Funny but scary at the same time….since you are always lead to fight against your best interests by those who make out best by you doing that.

  19. elaine says:

Seems to me if Glenn was telling lies the red phone that is connected to the White House would have been ringing off the table. He is begging the WH to let him know if he says any thing not true. So far he has not had a call….wonder why.

  20. Joseph says:

Yeah, Sam. You think you’d at least stick him on at 2AM or something until his contract runs out. He’d be the “‘Til Death” of CNN. Keep him out of sight but still get some return on all that money.

I have at least one of Dobbs’ books and there was a lot of good in it at that time with some populist economic theory and take on journalism. He then became obsessed with illegal immigration being the #1 problem in America, and it went beyond that. He’d even flip out about people waving an Irish flag on St. Patrick’s Day or Italian flag on Columbus day (really). Now he’s been running material about Obama not being a U.S. citizen, and it’s sad. He was a good populist voice who wrote about the shenanigans on Wall Street well before the banks imploded, but now he’s become obsessed with trivial conspiracy theories and his own self-importance and it’s killed any other good he could have done.

  21. Joseph says:

One more thing, backing up what Dave wrote. The term “far left” seems to get thrown around a lot. Obama was the most far left Senator. Four years ago it was supposedly John Kerry. CNN is far left, etc. Let’s get this straight. Dennis Kucinich is a “far left” politician. Bernie Sanders, a socialist, is a “far left” politician. Mike Gravel was the “far left” candidate in 2008. Obama, Biden, both Clintons, Kerry, Reid, Pelosi – all rather middle-of-the-road. Cuban national TV? Far left. CNN? Hardly.

If a candidate wants to implement single-payor health care, slash the defense budget 50% to provide community college tuition for all, and nationalize the oil companies, that would be a far left politician. If their strongest positions are wanting to slightly raise capital gains taxes and tighten gun background checks? Not far left.

  22. Capitalist Infidel says:

Weasel, please provide proof that Glenn Beck is not honest. I’d like a list of his lies. Just because far left wing fanatical nut jobs don’t like him actually gives him credibility.

  23. Jfan says:

Capitalist Infidel, Glenn boiled a frog, said that Lord Obama worked with SCIU, and he is overweight, and he owns a gun! How can you watch a man who says what he means and means what he says! I bet you’re a nut job too. makes me sick to see people talk like that.

  24. Fred says:

It’s obvious that Lou did not march to the orders of the Obama following management. He ask questions and sometimes hard questions that people didn’t want to hear. Why would CNN want to be fair in their reporting when they have slid so far to the left. Good for Lou to get out. He’ll pop back up and be CNN’s worst nightmare!

  25. dj109 says:

Compared to most shows on CNN, Lou was conservative. Yes, he labeled himself as Independent but he leaned right on most issues. As far as my Glenn Beck avatar goes, I, like him, and unlike most of you liberals, believe in the founding principles of this country and hate to see our government taking it in the opposite direction.

If you think what Obama is doing to this country is the right thing, you’d do well to crack open a history book and see that socialism has never worked and won’t work here either.

All I can say to you Beck haters is, in 10 years, look back on these times and see who was right. I’ll put my money on Beck being right…

One thing’s for sure though. Jimmy Carter has to be ecstatic that there’s finally a buffoon in the oval office that will surely take “the worst president ever” title away from him.

  26. Joseph says:

Capitalist Infidel, do you believe that FEMA is setting up concentration camps in the U.S. and that Glenn should give air time to this just because he “can’t disprove” it? Do you believe that Rockefeller Center was constructed as some sort of occult/political conspiracy with concealed communist symbology?

In regards to your list of lies, other more honest media personalities have a virtual part-time job documenting them; you should try watching some of them. Said list includes:

his claim that no other president didn’t use a Bible to take the oath of office (Adams and Teddy Roosevelt didn’t, to name two), he wildly, unimaginably overestimated the count of the teabagger protest and claimed a university professor had come up with this “real” count unlike the media count, and when asked on FOX who did this and what university they were with he claimed he “couldn’t remember”. That’s because no university professor produced such a count and none ever came forward to take credit for the bogus figure – in short, Glenn just made it up, much the way O’Reilly cited the “French Journal of Economics” when pressured to back up his claim that his boycott of France had any effect, and said journal turned out not to exist. He had a nice encounter with the folks from the View on a train, then told his listeners a completely different story about the meeting, then when pressured on the View ended up apologizing for the untrue story he told. He and Hannity aired a video about their bogeyman ACORN alleging an ACORN employee killed her husband. Problem – husband isn’t dead.

Glenn said this: “Now they’re worried about bombings taking place. Well, let me show you some new footage. A bombing did take place this past week in a town just north of Seattle called Everett. The only reason why I know this story is ’cause I was there. Radio station KRKO, their towers were blown up. When freedom of speech is being squelched, the left usually says, “That’s fascist!” But in this case the left doesn’t even call them anything!”

The actual news reports state that the towers were pushed over with an excavator, not bombed, and it was a long dispute over the towers being a public nuisance/eyesore that caused the culprits to do it, not an attempt to stifle free speech.

I could go on and on… but he just seems to take any incident and add/subtract as necessary until the event fits his paranoid narrative and the people who ask “When does Glenn ever lie?” simply never atempt to fact-check anything he says.

  27. Joseph says:

DJ109, I wish Obama was a socialist (a real socialist, not whatever definition you’re using). Socialism works wonderfully. Take Denmark – a recent budget surplus, much lower unemployment AND higher productivity than the U.S., better health with lower costs, lower crime, etc. You are like your friend Mr. Beck – you’re pulling facts out of thin air with no source to back them up. The socialist European countries have kept their socialism in power for decades because they’re happy with it. It’s hard to get really rich in countries like that, but almost impossible to fall through the cracks, lose your home, go bankrupt because of medical bills, etc. Meanwhile, many of us in this country are suffering. My father passed away recently and my mother is now living on that great socialist evil, social security. She got diagnosed with a rare disease and the treatment that’s saved her life costs $10,000 a month – paid for by that great evil of government-run healthcare, medicare. If not for that, she’d have died. Please save your political rhetoric and care more about your fellow countrymen – the way Lou Dobbs does, or at least did. In the Dobbs books I read, he sided with the working man, not the billion-dollar corporations who own Congress.

  28. Page says:

Working for CNN for 29 years. Imagine this is possible. But not so sure they were ’sick of him’, sounds like whoever their source is was bitter towards Lou to begin with.

(The people on the last post about CNN’s ads might want to see this and be so quick to judge)

  29. Demonjoe says:

Jfan, Glenn never actually boiled a frog, he explained that on his show by showing one of the different camera angles and revealed that is wasn’t a REAL frog.

Next here is your proof that Obama worked with SEIU
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aQ1NJaCtIkM

What’s him being overweight have to do with anythink?

And what’s wrong with owning a gun?

  30. MarsPolarLander says:

Good for Lou – glad he got the pay day – he told the truth to us – CNN is now all left, all the time. It is off my program guide for good. Be sure to watch Lou on The Factor tonight.

  31. Demonjoe says:

I think it’s a bad thing Lou Dobbs is leaving CNN. CNN will now look even more liberal now that there isn’t a Republican to balance it a little. If he goes to FOX then it will give the liberals even more reason to call FOX news biased.

  32. james says:

LOL They “CNN” paid him to leave hahahahahahahaha .man Keith Olberman is gonna really milk that info for all it’s worth on Countdown

  33. Jfan says:

Demonjoe, that was a joke hey it’s purple week!

  34. Jfan says:

    MarsPolarLander, Lou on The Factor?

  35. dave says:

“Jimmy Carter has to be ecstatic that there’s finally a buffoon in the oval office that will surely take “the worst president ever” title away from him.”

dj109, whatever your opinion about Bush is, and It’s still a bit early to judge his presidency(I’m not optimistic history will be kind), Jimmy Carter is not the “worst president ever” although he was certainly unimpressive. You may have thought he was truly lousy, but its awfully ignorant to ignore criminals like Nixon, or real buffoons like Harding. Learn your history a little, We’ve had quite a few real contenders for “worst president ever”

Conservatives need to stop confusing socialism with communism. You’re allowed to have your opinion about the size and role of government, but to liken Obamas policies or European socialism with communist regimes of the past is utterly ridiculous. And open your eyes, the European Socialists enjoy a strong economy and high quality of life.

Burn-E, giving coverage to Balloon boy is sensationalist and soft journalism but hardly evidence of any bias much less a far left one. Border violence is an issue that is reported on CNN during periods of increased violence, its just not harped upon as a pet issue. The fact is border violence is a background issue to most of the country. Drug violence at the borders is definitely an issue that needs to be addressed by our policy makers, but it is hardly news. A drop off in violence would be news. This is an issue that should be left to opinion shows where it does largely reside. I’ll admit to not knowing much about these communist appointees of Obama but it sounds largely like Conservative harping on small details of well vetted semi-important nominees. And I’m sure none of them are in favor of the genocidal tactics of the communist regimes of the past. It reeks of conspiracy theory, which CNN smartly stays away from. I’m not saying there isn’t bias at CNN, but its far from far left. Even if they are vehemently pro Obama, Obama himself is far from far left.

  36. dj109 says:

    Joseph,

If you like socialism so much and it’s working so well in other countries, why not pack your bags, move there and be happy? Quit trying to change this country into something it wasn’t intended to be.

This country was founded by men that didn’t believe in or intend for socialism to ever be a part of our government. They believed in a free market, low taxation and personal responsibility.

While I sympathize with your parents heath ordeal, healthcare isn’t and should never be a right. I can guarantee you that if government healthcare passes, it will be another huge failure just like medicare, medicaid, social security and everything else the government has tried to take over in the last 100 years.

If people would get off the government tit and take responsibility for their own well being, we wouldn’t need bs government programs in the first place. By socializing everything and hammering the productive people of society to pay for all the idiots who spend their whole life and refuse to save, you hinder society as a whole.

  37. dj109 says:

    dave,

The current boondoggle “healthcare reform bill” is pure socialism just like medicare, medicaid and social security. Obama has admitted to wealth redistribution being part of his agenda. He’s a socialist who is hell bent on destroying the fundamentals of this great country, period.

  38. dj109 says:

    dave,
My opinion of Bush is that he’s almost as bad as Obama. Where Obama has a half decent education, Bush was simply a bumbling fool. They are both guilty of spending us into oblivion. Bush went a step further by being a warmonger, hell bent on filling the pockets of government contractors by launching illegal wars against Iraq and Afghanistan. Both Obama and Bush are blatant liars and puppets in my opinion.

  39. glarbl_blarbl says:

Obviously dj109 doesn’t want pesky things like facts get in the way of his opinions. Speaking of which, I too will only believe this story about Dobbs when it’s confirmed by a real source.

And if CNN is far-left, then I’m Arnold Schwarzenegger. Hell, if there were any cable network that actually was far-left I would watch it all day. The closest thing to a Liberal on the air right now is Ed Schultz. Don’t try to tell me Olbermann and Maddow are far-left either: Rachel is a hawk, and KO is a moderate. I watch them every day, and I know.

One other thing: the violence in Mexico is a direct result of Prohibition. If drugs were taxed and regulated like alcohol, then we wouldn’t see all of these kidnappings and murders — black markets always breed violence. When was the last time you heard a story about two beer distributors having a shootout in America? That’s right, under the Eighteenth Amendment.

  40. Parenthood says:

Well, Alex Jones likes Lou Dobbs and hates Glenn Beck.

  41. Parenthood says:

And Keith Olbermann is a left winger becuase he would criticize Bush when others would not.

  42. Jfan says:

glarbl_blarbl, I watch them everyday too, and if you call the sports writer a moderate you can call Glenn Beck a liberal and I watch him every day, so I know.

  43. glarbl_blarbl says:

If one is defined by whom one criticizes, then Olbermann is as conservative as Glenn Beck. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mBj42uOUc9E has KO comparing the dems to Homer Simpson. This is why I think he’s a moderate.

Yes Olbermann is a sports writer on the weekends snow, as he was full-time ten years ago. But then GB was a shock-jock then, so by Jfan’s logic he still is one now. Sounds more like they both have advanced in their fields to me.

I’ll admit to only having watched the parodies of Glenn Beck, I’m as Liberal as you can get without being communist. Capitalism is definitely a powerful paradigm, but must be tempered with social justice from government. Otherwise you get this weird, freewheeling, paradoxical, Anarchic Authoritarianism we’re seeing right now — which will probably only get worse if things keep going like they are.

Ok, after that you all probably think I’m crazy — so I’ll just sign off with a Buckaroo Banzai quote:
“Hey, hey, hey, hey-now. Don’t be mean; we don’t have to be mean, cuz, remember, no matter where you go, there you are.”

  44. Jfan says:

glarbl_blarbl, what other job has the sports writer had? and all anyone has to do is just watch him to see how left he is.

  45. Joseph says:

    DJ,

I’m not intending to leave for the same reason MLK Jr. didn’t accept a large cash offer to move to Africa. We love our country and will work to make it better. It shouldn’t be considered unpatriotic to see something working in another country and point that out, or point out areas where we can do better. But my point was that your claim that opening a history book would reveal the failure of socialism isn’t true. In fact, it’s quite the opposite. While discussing health care with someone else in another forum, he made the same claim and I decided to research it on the CIA World Fact Book. That’s when I learned about the European socialist nations and while they do have their problems, claims that they are economic failures aren’t based in fact. They don’t boom as high, but they don’t bust either. An exception seems to be Denmark, with an unbelievable 2% unemployment the last time I checked. There’s nothing wrong, when our own unemployment has surpassed 10%, to check out how they’ve been able to keep people working in an economic climate that’s seriously hurt other nations. Perhaps we need to learn from some of their “bust” control mechanisms.

The President has said that we can disagree without being disagreeable. What Mr. Beck seems to be doing is taking policy differences like health care or government bailouts and twisting them into claims that they threaten the very foundation of our nation, and by extension anyone who proposes doing anything differently than what was done before is a traitor to the nation. It’s a horrible form of devisive politics to make us turn on each other, and it doesn’t seem able to die out.

In regards to your claim that health care isn’t a right, I seem to remember an enumeration that “life” is one of our fundamental rights. Am I to believe we should spend trillions to defend our populace from terrorists and the armies of other nations, but when it comes to heart disease, viruses or cancer cells our citizens are on their own, with the Survival Of the Richest? The latter three have killed far more Americans than foreign enemies ever have, and if we truly are all Americans and we care about each other, why would we consign people to death if they need a medicine or a transplant they can’t afford? For some sort of rigid ideological purity? We’re the only first-world democracy on earth that doesn’t have a practice in place to help take care of the health of our citizens, and we haven’t seen democracy fall because the rest of the planet has aided those who can’t afford health care.

You claim that there was some sort of intention by the founders to avoid health care. Firstly, it doesn’t really matter, as our founders also limited voting to white male landowners and permitted slavery. Provisions were put in place to change the Constitution because we’re not supposed to be bound to an 18th century mentality and understanding of the world forever. The inscription on the Jefferson memorial quotes Jefferson on this subject, talking about the folly of being bound to past practices and tradition. Jefferson wrote that our forbears wore animal furs and lived in caves, but we’re not bound to those practices or regarded them as good because they were the way things always were. Our democracy was a radical break with the past in a time when all nations on earth were ruled by kings, czars, and the like, and I don’t think our founding fathers would follow the logic that their world view was to shape things forever.

That said, several commentators over the past week or two have brought forth the fact that Mr. Beck’s idol, Thomas Paine, did himself advocate socialism, while Mr. Beck quotes him in an attempt to battle the forces of imagined socialism (which would be as silly as calling Bush a fascist if he lowered corporate tax rates).

In 1797 Paine wrote a pamphlet called “Agrarian Justice”, from which the following quotes are taken:

“THE plan contained in this work is not adapted for any particular country alone: the principle on which it is based is general. But as the rights of man are a new study in this world, and one needing protection from priestly imposture, and the insolence of oppressions too long established, I have thought it right to place this little work under your safeguard.”

“…Poverty, therefore, is a thing created by that which is called civilized life. It exists not in the natural state. On the other hand, the natural state is without those advantages which flow from agriculture, arts, science and manufactures.”

“…Civilization, therefore, or that which is so-called, has operated two ways: to make one part of society more affluent, and the other more wretched, than would have been the lot of either in a natural state.”

“…the condition of every person born into the world, after a state of civilization commences, ought not to be worse than if he had been born before that period.”

“It is a position not to be controverted that the earth, in its natural, cultivated state was, and ever would have continued to be, the common property of the human race. In that state every man would have been born to property. He would have been a joint life proprietor with rest in the property of the soil, and in all its natural productions, vegetable and animal. ”

***”Every proprietor, therefore, of cultivated lands, owes to the community ground-rent (for I know of no better term to express the idea) for the land which he holds; and it is from this ground-rent that the fund prod in this plan is to issue.”***

You can check out the rest yourself from any of the articles around that discuss it, but here is Glenn Beck’s Thomas Paine advocating that our systems make some more and others less rich than they should be, and there should be a tax on those who earn land. He goes on to explain how this money should be given to everyone to provide for basic needs, etc. In effect – INCOME REDISTRIBUTION – of a type never pondered by Obama (by the way, when the millionaires got tax breaks under the last administration, why is that not income redistribution, but if they get a tax increase, that’s an evil plot to steal people’s money and give it to lazy people?). The point here is that Glenn Beck either isn’t very familiar with the people he idolizes, the founding fathers, or a lot of the stuff he’s been talking about, or he knows full well what he’s talking about, and twisting the truth for those who won’t bother to check out what he says, in order to whip people into a panicked frenzy over the first attempt in decades to use the power of government to help the common man rather than provide more tax breaks on behalf of corporate lobbyists to their billion-dollar employers.

  46. Demonjoe says:

Jfan, sorry I did not realize you were joking. I guess you must have watched Glenn Beck today because he had that purple week going on today. Happy Purple Week!

  47. Jfan says:

Demonjoe, good job with the facts

  48. Demonjoe says:

    Jfan, thanks.

  49. Demonjoe says:

Turns out that you can only watch FOX news and still have your facts straight.

  50. JC says:

I will never watch CNN again. If they only want liberal hosts who worship this administrstion, then thats the only kind of people they’ll attract.

  51. Demonjoe says:

When will this website stop with the articles about Lou Dobbs? I’m sicking of seeing that picture of him. There are four on the cable news ratings page now.

  52. usedtolovecoco says:

To the mouth breathers that watch Faux News, everything that’s not Republican propaganda is “far left”.

  53. dave says:

“If you like socialism so much and it’s working so well in other countries, why not pack your bags, move there and be happy? Quit trying to change this country into something it wasn’t intended to be”

People have jobs and families. Come on, that’s just a silly argument.

“healthcare isn’t and should never be a right”

I disagree on a fundamental level. I believe a reasonable minimal level of health coverage is a right, just like education, fire coverage, police coverage. I believe in free market economies and I believe that private healthcare can exist alongside a public option just as private education exists.

“The current boondoggle “healthcare reform bill” is pure socialism just like medicare, medicaid and social security. Obama has admitted to wealth redistribution being part of his agenda.”

True these things are all socialism. But safety net socialism is so well entrenched in not just America, but in all developed countries that suggesting that it is some sort of far left agenda is absurd. Whether or not you agree with it, you must recognize that safety net socialism is the moderate center. Glenn Beck is the one far outside the mainstream here. A radical.

“He’s a socialist who is hell bent on destroying the fundamentals of this great country, period.”

This last statement is unreal. Yeah he believes in some moderate socialist policies, like most of the world, but he’s not some extremist hell bent on destroying free market economics. Yeah, some of our founders believed in a small central government, and some believed in slavery too. Our founders were brilliant but they were living in a different era with a different set of social values. Values, I believe those values were less evolved than the ones we hold today. Small central government may have been right for those days(and it was far from a unanimous agreement among the founders), but whether or not it is right for today is a separate question. We can not be beholden to 18th century ideals. “But Thomas Paine might disagree,” is not a valid argument for 21st century policies.

  54. dave says:

Oh and those small central goverment, pure free market, low taxes fundamentals were gone well before Obama. Don’t act like he’s there’s any of these fundamentals are left to be destroyed. Restored maybe, but not destroyed.

  55. Joe says:

I think that CNN would do better if they renamed the company to LNN (Liberal News Network). They might just attract all of the commies.

  56. Demonjoe says:

George W. Bush and Congress screwed up our Capitalist system when him and the Democrats and Republicans alike in Congress decided to bail out those failures. Hell, he even said that we would have to sacrifice some principles of Capitialism to save it.

All states should be like California and support the illegal immigrants. We can all be in the same boat….broke! Then maybe they can support us for a change. They do the work that AMERICANS won’t do.

Here are some facts from the Los Angeles Times:

    1. 40% of all in L.A. County (L.A. County has 102 million people) are working for cash and don’t pay taxes. This is primarily because they are predominately illegal immigrants working without a green card.
    2. 95% of all warrants for murder in Los Angeles are for illegal immigrants.
    3. 75% of people on the most wanted list in Los Angeles are for illegal aliens.
    4. 2/3 of all births in Los Angeles County are to illegal alien Mexicans on Medi-Cal, whose births were paid for by taxpayers.
    5. Nearly 35% of all inmates in California detention centers are Mexican Nationals here illegally.
    6. Over 300,000 illegal aliens in Los Angeles County are living in garages.
    7. The FBI reports that half of all gang members in Los Angeles County are most likely illegal aliens from south of the border.
    8. Nearly 60% of all occupants of HUD property are illegal.
    9. 21 radio stations in L. A. are Spanish speaking.
    10. In L. A. County 5.1 million people speak English, 3.9 million speak Spanish.
    11. Less than 2% of illegal aliens are picking our crops, but 29% are on welfare.
    12. 29% of all Federal inmates are illegal aliens.

Then we can turn our money and jobs over to the government and let the government support us. If you are an entrepeneur, you will be put in prison. We can’t have any of that! Everyone is the same. Jobs will only be filled by illegal cheap labor, no citizens allowed to work. Enjoy communism! It works for all.

  61. dj109 says:

Something you socialism lovers tend to forget is that socialism kills innovation and invention. Who wants to invent the next great product or work hard to come up with cures when they know people like Obama are going to come for their wealth if they do? What motivation does one have to excel when the more money they make, the more the government steals from them? How would you like to go from making $60/hr to making $25/hr because the government thinks you should pay for the welfare of a bunch of deadbeats? Would you work as hard as you did when you were making $60/hr? The free market made this country the greatest in the world and now between Bush and Obama, they’re destroying it.

The American dream used to be to work hard and enjoy the fruits of your labor, not to work hard and have some socialistic jackass president tax you to death to pay for a bunch of deadbeat stiffs that don’t want to work. Deadbeats who are born and raised to live off of entitlements their whole lives instead of working hard to live the American dream. It’s indentured servitude plain and simple. The government makes slaves of these people in order to expand themselves and you socialists just applaud it with every breath.

Rewarding failure on a massive level is what this country is all about now and it makes me sick. If you screw up your business, you deserve to go bankrupt, period. I don’t care how big your company is. Sure, we would’ve had a nasty recession. But at least us taxpayers wouldn’t be footing the bill for a bunch of idiotic investors.

Healthcare is not a right in a free market economy. If the healthcare bill is passed with any kind of public option, it WILL be a massive failure. I personally guarantee it. If anybody wants to wager, I’m game. If you think everybody will get the same quality healthcare they’re receiving now once every deadbeat welfare recipient and illegals are clogging up the system, you’re just flat out on crack. The Obama administration is purposefully trying to destroy the system in order to increase the size of government.

Just for fun, why don’t one of you socialists tell me one business the government has ever successfully run? Just one. Is there one they haven’t bankrupted? Why do you put so much faith into a government that couldn’t run a lemonade stand? The government can only steal wealth, not produce it…

Firstly, the government doesn’t “steal” money. Stealing is illegal. We the people give the government – which is our representatives – the power to collect it and to spend it as we the people want them to do, or vote them out of office and vote in others if they do not. We can also put issues directly on the ballot in most places. So much of what you – and by extension Beck – say is hyperbole and rhetoric. Just calm down, man. :-)

Secondly, you revealed how you really feel about people. “Deadbeats”, “stealing”, etc. You and those who espouse your philosophy may not hate America, but you sure do hate Americans. You view your fellow citizens, your fellow Americans, with a paranoid eye, filled with the belief that they’re coming to get you and steal what’s yours, that everyone else doesn’t want to work and wants you to support them, that the President wants to destroy America, etc., etc. So much fear, anger, hate. You missed out on what the rest of us saw in 2008, DJ. Were you listening? “There are no red states… no blue states… just the United States”. The devisive politics of gay vs. straight, rich vs. poor, east vs. west, white vs. blue collar, liberal vs. convervative, environmentalist vs. capitalist, etc. was supposed to be over and we’re supposed to be looking after our shared interests and working with each other for the common good, not destroying each other for ideological purity.

The free market didn’t make this country the greatest in the world. First of all, we don’t have and never did have a completely free market. Secondly, lots of other countries have free markets. Many things contributed to this country’s success, including democracy for starters. You also need to distinguish between political and economic systems, which you constantly conflate. China has a booming economy but an appalling political system. If it had the number one economy in the world (which it might accomplish in the forseeable future) it would still be far from the greatest country in the world.

I don’t see any doubling of the tax rate on Congress’ legislative agenda. These threats you see, DJ, are all in your own mind and Glenn is putting them there. They’re not coming for you, man. There are no FEMA concentration camps, Donald Trump and Bill Gates aren’t going to be led away in chains (the Gates family put out a little book arguing against the repeal of the estate tax and Trump has said he’d be happy with higher taxes to do his part to help the country, the war effort, etc., so you might want to lead both of them away yourself), an army of the poor are not coming to steal your things, and Rockefeller center will not raise a giant hammer and sickle flag on May Day. There’s no Reds under the bed or Commies in the closet. America’s going to survive, dude. We survived Watergate, the JFK assassination, 9/11 and Bush V. Gore, we’ll survive the government loaning some money to struggling companies and providing subsidies to help people buy insurance who can’t afford it.

First off, regardless of what Glenn Beck says, anyone with half a brain can see what’s taking place within the current administration. Thank God there is someone like him willing to break it down for all the brainwashed people out there. You think the majority of this country wants what this jackass is doing? Not a chance in hell. He was non-stop lies all through his campaign. He made tons of promises that he will never keep. He rode the coattails of a failed Bush presidency promising change. The few conservatives that actually voted for him just weren’t listening hard enough to the kind of change he was all about.

His policies are all about redistribution of wealth. And no, an army of poor aren’t coming to take my things. The government will be more than happy to do it for them. And yes, it is theft when the government plays Robin Hood, especially when most of the garbage Congress is pushing is unconstitutional to begin with. Collecting taxes to take care of infrastructure, a strong national defense, disability etc? Sure, I’m all for that. Collecting obsessive taxes from a certain class of people for the sole purpose of entitlement to a lower class. Not quite…

Keep thinking there are no red or blue states and that we’re all united. This administration has made sure that isn’t a possibility with their “dissent against us and we’ll demonize you” campaign. I was under the impression we had the right to free speech and dissent against our government. The mid terms are sure to get Congress back in check and we’ll see just what percentage of Americans really like what they’re doing. We’ll see just how correct or incorrect those gallup polls really are.

How about the trillions of dollars this administration is spending and tacking onto the deficit? The massive debt they are piling up on American families for generations to come. We can’t pay that back without destroying the dollar. Have you seen what gold has been doing over the last year or two? This government along with the help of the Federal Reserve is and has been stealing your purchasing power by debasing the currency. It’s going to get much worse seeing as Bernanke has stated he will leave interest rates artificially low causing massive inflation.

I see you dodged the last question in my previous post. Name a single business the government has run successfully. Just one thing that has actually made a profit. What gives them the right to take over private business or pick winners and losers in the market? Why should we trust an incompetent government with any aspect of our life as important as healthcare? How is taking away Americans freedom of choice even constitutional? Enquiring minds want to know…

The Department of Education will be sure to keep them dumbed down to the point that they will fill your shoes and be just as big a drain on society. That is, if they don’t turn to a life of crime. After all, just ask most liberal democrats, it’s easier to steal than to work for what you want.

There ya go. That should be equally as stupid as your post above. The governments job isn’t to turn a profit in the services it runs. Profit is the domain of the private sector. The government in our country provides services that are either one or a number of these things a.)unprofitable but necessary for the prosperity of the country. The types of things we need but the private sector can’t make money on, like police coverage, or infrastructure, clean air ordinances. b.)services the government believe that every citizen is entitled to no matter their income level, like education, national security, or IMO basic health care.

Profit is not the measure of success for public services although we all hope they can be run efficiently. Until recently our government hasn’t been in the buisness of running any buisness with the intent of profit. Now with the bailouts, we are, but that’s a different story. Healthcare would presumably be run for efficiency and quality, not profit.

Now then to answer your question, plenty of local governments run museums, stadiums, and other such operations at a healthy profit.

And presumably private health care would exist alongside a public option, nobody’s taking away your choice. Not to mention Freedom of Choice isn’t mentioned anywhere in the constitution. The constitution is very specific what freedoms it allows. The only thing the constitution does to protect a free market is to have limited private property protections. public healthcare in no way threatens private property.

  73. Jack says:

Wrong Dave, public healthcare is for commies and threatens every facet of American life! Why should taxes pay to keep citizens alive and healthy? If they can’t afford to do that themselves, they deserve to die!

(Was that sarcasm? Nooo! (That’s a yes.))

  74. dj109 says:

“Healthcare would presumably be run for efficiency and quality, not profit.”

That’s hilarious! You can’t honestly think that the government can run healthcare to be more efficient with better quality than the private sector. As a matter of fact, I will personally guarantee you that to be untrue.

“And presumably private health care would exist alongside a public option, nobody’s taking away your choice.”

Keep on believing that. Apparently you’re confused as to the meaning of an individual mandate. This is where the government forces every American citizen to purchase insurance whether they want it or not. So in real life, my choice to not have an insurance policy has been stripped by the same government that’s supposed to protect my rights and not infringe upon them. You also fail to understand that this legislation has been purposely written to make the penalty for small business not supplying healthcare to its employees less than the cost of private plans. What happens here is the business owner, realizing it’s less expensive to pay the fine rather than to insure his employees, pays the fine which leaves his employees no other option than to take the public option or pay for private insurance out of their own pockets. Although you can keep a public plan, you can be sure it will be more expensive to do so.

“Until recently our government hasn’t been in the buisness of running any business with the intent of profit.”

The government has never and will never profit or make any business more efficient because it doesn’t care about costs like the private sector. It can just tax it’s citizens more or just keep tacking onto the deficit to enslave future generations. Most liberals don’t understand that America is broke. We are out of money. We don’t have the money to fund Obamas “break the country literally” spending spree.

“Now then to answer your question, plenty of local governments run museums, stadiums, and other such operations at a healthy profit.”

Who said anything about local governments? Of course there are conservative local governments all over the country (with the exception of most blue states) that watch their spending and keep expenses within their means. If only the federal government would follow their examples of conservative fiscal responsibility…

  75. bruce says:

CNN has much bigger problems than Lou Dobbs. This is a news channel in total ratings hell, even behind a joke like MSNBC. That ultra-liberal news “reporting” they do isn’t fooling anyone and viewers are checking out and not coming back.

  76. dave says:

“That’s hilarious! You can’t honestly think that the government can run healthcare to be more efficient with better quality than the private sector. As a matter of fact, I will personally guarantee you that to be untrue.”

It can’t run it any worse. US health care is the most expensive and least effective system in the developed world, and that’s despite having the best medical schools and doctors. The inefficiencies inherent in the private sector insurance game are the reason.

“Apparently you’re confused as to the meaning of an individual mandate.”

I know exactly what an individual mandate means. Forget, for the moment, that being uninsured is a choice no sensible person would make, and try to remember that the government has a mandate for education, auto insurance, and a number of other things. The choice here would be between public and private insurances, actually giving individuals more choice. Of course, it doesn’t look like a public option will be part of the bill. Now don’t get me wrong, there are lots of things wrong with the current healthcare bills being proposed, but the concept of universal, public healthcare is not wrong IMO. One of the great advantages of a public system is that it takes the burden off of employers, in particular small buisness. Somehow this bill simultaneously puts the burden on employers, individuals, and taxpayers. Despite this, it will still probably be more efficient than the joke we call the status quo.

“Most liberals don’t understand that America is broke. We are out of money. We don’t have the money to fund Obamas “break the country literally” spending spree”

You act like only liberals are guilty of deficit spending. If the republicans had their way we wouldn’t have deficits? Oh wait… Don’t forget Clinton was the last president to look over budget surpluses. Anyways, a basic understanding of Keynesian Economics(which is the theory an overwhelming amount of economists ascribe too) tells us you use deficit spending during times of recession to control the booms and busts of the economy. Of course this means during good times the government needs to run a balanced budget, in order to make this sustainable, but those are the years we need to go to unfunded wars right?

    Oh yes it can…

“Forget, for the moment, that being uninsured is a choice no sensible person would make, and try to remember that the government has a mandate for education, auto insurance, and a number of other things.”

Being uninsured may not be sensible but it should be left up to the individual in a “free” country. There is no mandate for government education. You are still allowed to home school. My children both attend private school and test 2 grade levels above the average public school student. They aren’t subject to the dumbing down of the current federal agenda. Thank God… Auto insurance isn’t mandated either. If I don’t want to purchase auto insurance, the federal government will not fine me or put me in jail like they will if I refuse to buy health insurance.

“Anyways, a basic understanding of Keynesian Economics(which is the theory an overwhelming amount of economists ascribe too) tells us you use deficit spending during times of recession to control the booms and busts of the economy.”

You talk like booms and busts are a good thing. Being a fiscal conservative, I don’t subscribe to Keynesian economics. I am more into Austrian economics which leans towards not spending what you don’t have. The sensible choice. Regardless how much liberals want to believe it, you can’t spend your way into prosperity no matter how hard you try. You will ultimately devalue the currency, through inflation, trying to pay it back, in essence robbing everyone of their purchasing power. For the record, George Bush, although labeled a Republican, was a RINO. Probably the most liberal “so called” Republican to ever hold office. You are right about Clinton. He was the last president to actually balance the budget and be fiscally responsible. But, only because he couldn’t get the same crap passed that Obama is wanting now.

  79. Call me Roy says:

Great to see Lou Dobbs leaving a sinking ship. CNN is becoming another ABC, NBC, CBS joke. These pudknockers couldn’t find their rear-ends with both hands. I know that most of our government is slowly failing most Americans over the last five administrations. This is not a Democratic or Republican thing. Why do you think our worthless media and press do nothing but vomit worthless party crap all day long? Why do you think that they never talk about so many people giving up on both corrupt parties and registering Independent? I will tell you why. The media is owned by the Big Banks and Wall Street, just like they own you and me. How do you think the Big Banks could possibly gamble away hundreds of billions and then get “our” government to say they are too big to fail and give them billions of dollars with no recourse for the taxpayer? I will tell you why. Because the Big Banks own the Federal Reserve, who own most of our Congress, who control the lobbyists, who control the laws, who control your credit cards and your jobs. So the next time you get mad at these news stories and want to email CNN or NBC or Fox, take a deep breath and realize that you comments are worthless. You shut your pie hole and accept that you are a slave to these global companies who don’t love countries or honor. They only love and worship money.

  80. dave says:

“My children both attend private school”

Yet you still pay taxes for public school. And there will be no mandate to use government healthcare. Private healthcare will always be an option. Most laws are mandates in one way or another. The government takes away my choice to murder people. Obviously no one has a problem with that. Where you draw the line is the issue. I believe it is still within the governments right to mandate health insurance because it will lower the overall costs of health care and help to control the freeloader problem.(Although there are plenty of places where I think the government crosses the line; drug laws for instance.) Clearly you disagree where that line is on a fundamental level, but to suggest that this is or even should be a “free” country is naive. We are a nation of laws.

“You talk like booms and busts are a good thing. Being a fiscal conservative, I don’t subscribe to Keynesian economics.”

No, but I believe booms and busts are inevitable in a free market economy. Keynesian economics is another fundamental disagreement we share, but I must point out that Keynesian economics, is the mainstream center. You fundamentalist fiscal conservatives are the fringe right. There is no doubt in my mind that deficit spending the way we are doing now, and the way we have done during the bush years is unsustainable, but for short periods of time you can use deficit spending to help control the economy. Now if only we could keep those periods of spending temporary, and if only we could spend that money smartly,(Don’t get me started on the mishandling of the Bush/Obama bailouts) then we could better protect the value of the dollar, although there are some advantages in the export market to having a weakened dollar. A reckless running of the fed by Greenspan during the housing bubble after the dot com crash didn’t help either.

At least we agree that Bush was a bad president. :)
