The Futon Critic reports that USA Network’s Burn Notice will return with the second half of its third season on Thursday January 28, 2010 at 9pm and that it will be paired with the second half of the freshman season of White Collar, which will air at 10pm. White Collar finishes its first half-season on December 4.
Psych is expected to return on Friday January 29 at 10pm with the second half of its fourth season.

I wonder where they will put Royal Pains when it comes back next summer.
I’d guess USA will air Royal Pains with first half of Burn Notice season 4 starting in June. What will be interesting to see is whether USA Net decided Royal Pains HAS to be a summer show,and airs the whole season during the summer, or whether it takes the “half season” airing approach it has with some of its other shows.
Interesting that Psych isn’t being moved to 9pm, I’m guessing USA are seeing how it performs without Monk as a lead in. I guess USA could expand to Tuesday or Wednesday but with major cast changes in Law and Order: CI and retooling in In Plain Sight, I could see USA cancelling a show or two like they did with The 4400 and The Dead Zone.

If they were smart, which they are, but still Royal Pains need to do half seasons. I just don’t think having viewers waiting to see a show a year later is smart. Fans like us who enjoy ratings and tv itself might remember to watch but others won’t. Everything is so competetive that so many more shows will be out before then. After a year gone fans of Royal pains wil have become disconnected from that in the moment feeling when you’re anticipating the next weeks episode. Just my thoughts anyway.
I think the setting of Royal pains lends itself to being a summer show but it would be interesting to see a couple of episodes with Hank treating ordinary people at the clinic during the Hampton’s off season.
Bill or Robert, did you guys get ahold of the White Collar ratings for last Friday? I’m wondering if it bumped back up or kept sliding?
When is USA Network going to stop making seemingly intelligent moves and start behaving more like its parent? It’s too damned difficult to say bad things about them when they keep acting up like this.

Love Burn Notice and I find myself intrigued by White Collar. It will be a good pairing, imo.

So White Collar will be moving to Thursdays? I’ve enjoyed watching some of the USA shows that air on Fridays, because there is little else worth watching on the broadcast networks on Friday nights. But it’s going to be difficult for USA to get much viewership for original programming on a Thursday night, especially during February sweeps and the Winter Olympics. Good thing I have a TiVo and USA runs their shows more than once.
Devdog, there’s really not all that much competition at 10 pm. Burn Notice will likely take a hit, but I would guess that the increased PUT on Thursday will help White Collar, not hurt it. (I believe PUT is higher on Thursday than Friday even when you count cable, but I may be wrong about that. Robert? Bill?)
PUT on Thursday at 10pm is definitely greater than Friday at 10pm. For 11/5 (Thur) vs. 11/6 (Fri) it was vs. 36.1% vs 27.4 % from 10p-11p (those are P2+ PUT, not HH / HUT)
USA’s schedules are amazing. My hat is constantly off to them.
White Collar feels like a veteran show already. Most new shows have a poor episode early on. Seems like WC hasnt had a bad episode yet.
I think the last episode of SGU “Time” was the best one so far. “Earth” had some interesting moments as well. I think they need to move into more developing stuff and steer away from “the mission will fail and the show will be over if we dont save ourselves before the end of this episode” type episodes for a bit.
Looking forward to Psych and Burn Notice.
I have noticed USA runs their shows several times a week. Why dont the main networks do that with their new shows to try and get more viewers interested in them. Would they take that big of a loss in revenue showing the same episode more than once a week or something?
Leo, if by main networks you mean broadcast networks, it’s because broadcast networks do not have 24 hours a day to fill with programming.
Can’t wait for Burn Notice to come back. I’m thinking it might help boost White Collar’s numbers. And I’m eager for Royal Pains to return, but I think that show kind of lends itself to the summer.
Yeah, Burn Notice is probably our two families favorite. It’s NICE to HAVE A HERO and one that won’t just kill people ’cause he wants to. Michael is kinda like a James Bond with a soul. Good stuff.
And while I thought White Collar was getting a little dull, this last episode where a friend is caught in a scam (while being a LOT like a Burn Notice plot) was better than most I’ve seen. It was just really well-done.
I think it’s safe to say both of these shows have some ‘legs’ to them. But it’s hard to keep up this quality of writing. I hope they last.

Burn Notice is simply the best, better than all the rest!
I love Burn Notice and think it will make a nice pairing with WC. White Collar is entertaining. The interactions between McKay and Bomer are great but I haven’t cared about the cases at all. I also like seeing Willie Garson. I’m hoping that WC grows as BN did between it’s 1st and 2nd season next year.
I’m also looking forward to Psych returning.
USA seems to have a good formula going right now although I wait with bated breath to see how LOCI holds with it’s main character’s gone and In Plain Sight retooled.
I am hoping that the creator’s end Monk in a proper way.
just FYI, see the update in the post. USA is denying this, but The Futon’s Critic’s response seems fairly “expect the press release confirming the dates soon!” We’ll see, stay tuned.
A natural pairing and totally expected. If Chuck were on this network it would be a hat trick in hockey parlance. But Chuck is going to be too busy, ’saving’ NBC!

Can you guys define PUT? From the context, I’m guessing it has something to do with the total number of TV sets in use vs. overall number of sets, but I’d like to understand that statistic a little better.
Devdog: HUT = Household Universe of Televisons and PUT = People Universe of Televisions. So the HUT = % of Households with TVs tuned in and PUT = the percentage of people age 2+ (who live in households with televisions) who were watching TV.
edit for the 2009-2010 season there are 114.9 million households with TVs and 292.04 million people 2+ living in those households.

Thanks. I fully understand that there are more viewers on Thursday than Friday. But my point was that because Thursday is the biggest night for the broadcast networks, I’d think that the total number of viewers for cable vs. broadcast would be greater on Friday. Apparently, from your responses, that’s not the case.
Devdog, we don’t actually have precise enough info to say either way, but you can look at the share data for the big four+CW on a nightly basis and make guesses about the broadcast/cable mix.
But Thursday isn’t the biggest night when it comes to PUT – it’s the most important night because advertisers make it so. But so far this season the PUT is usually bigger for Sunday and Monday night primetime. That might be completely driven by NFL football though.
As if there wasn’t enough to DVR on Thursdays, damnit! Lol
I think there must be some disppointment about White Collar’s ratings. Bonnie Hammer was quoted as saying pre-launch that the feedback had been so strong for WC that she had to manage her own expectations. Then it premiers in the of cushy last season Monk spot to lower ratings that Psych did and then drops off precipitously. I expect they wanted more from it. I know that when Psych started Monk was stronger and I know the expectations for Friday night aren’t as high as for Thursday but I still think they expected it to be bigger and want to grow this one as another Monk or Burn Notice level of ratings.
So for now they will move it to Thursday and have it get the Burn Notice coattails. I enjoy WC so I hope it might stay – I think it is a good fit there – but I know Burn Notice will probably be used to launch Covert Affairs or Facing Kate. It is cable’s NCIS – a hit launcher.
ARGH! I already watch Supernatural at 9:00, DVR Fringe at 9:00 DVR Mentalist at 10:00. Thank goodness Burn Notice is repeated a lot, so I can catch the episodes later.

Considering that Psych premiered in the summer where there is no competition, White Collar is doing very well and pairing it with Burn Notice is a vote of confidence. It is better out of Monk then Psych did.
On the White Collar website they are polling which other USA character they’d like to see the White Collar lead character team up with – and at the moment Burn Notice is in the lead.
So perhaps they are planning a crossover
