Heather-riffic: What Will Locklear’s Return Mean For Melrose Place Ratings?

Posted on 17 November 2009 by Bill Gorman

MELROSE PLACE

Heather Locklear returns to Melrose Place tonight to reprise her role as Amanda Woodward. What will she do for the ratings? More importantly, what does she need to do to save the show? Here are last week’s final numbers for Melrose Place:

- 1.275 million viewers
- 0.9/1 HH
- 0.7/2 A18-49
- 0.8/2 A18-34
- 1.2/3 W18-34

For the season to date, the CW is averaging a 1.2 rating for adults 18-49 and a 1.5 rating for adults 18-34. Update: The CW is averaging a 2.1 rating for women 18-34.

With Melrose Place currently averaging a 0.73 rating for adults 18-49 (including a single repeat), I think Heather would need to increase the show’s 18-49 rating to a 1.1 to make it odds on for renewal. That’s almost a 50% increase. For adults 18-34, last week’s rating is only 53% of the CW season average. That 0.8 rating needs to increase by almost 70% to put it in a range that would signal renewal.

For all her star power, I just don’t see increases like that being sustainable. For tonight’s episode, I’ll guess a 1.2 rating for adults 18-49, a 1.2 rating for adults 18-34, and a 1.5 rating for women 18-34, trending downward sharply next week.

You can track my weekly prognostications on Melrose Place’s chances in the CW’s Renew / Cancel Index.

  1. Brad says:

I’m going with 1.1. With all the promo’s run (I saw 3 of them during the commercial break last night for Chelsea Lately), I think people will tune in, but it’ll slowly drop from there. If it goes below a 1 tonight the show is officially, 100% doomed.

  2. Alex says:

She will do nothing at all. No one watch this show. They should change showrunners ages ago, but now it’s too late.

  3. Ali says:

    1.3 A18-49
    1.3 A18-34
    1.8 W18-34

    2.4 Million viewers

  4. Julia says:

W18-34 average is 1.3. Last week was a series low for a new episode. The average without the repeat episode (0.5) is 1.6.

  5. Wayne says:

Man, there is going to be so much soft lighting on her face it’ll look like a hazy fog.

    I’m going with a 1.2

  6. Michael J says:

I don’t know about ratings, but she certainly adds to the eye candy factor. :)

  7. mark-allen says:

i’ll tune in once to see what they do with her…but if i tune in again will depend on how good (bitchy) she is.

  8. Mickey says:

I really enjoy Melrose – but I don’t really think the series will get boosted any higher then around 2 million viewers.
Those number for last week’s episode were a series low. Its average is 1,579,000 for original episodes.

  9. kenny says:

    A18-49 => 1.1
    A18-34 => 1.2
    W18-34 => 1.6

    2 million viewers

I don’t think it’s gonna be big deal, but I hope it’ll for them

  10. ryan says:

ill be tuning in, but its hard cuz there up against Dancing With The sTars

  11. mark says:

i’d say it still won’t go over the 2 million mark. maybe 1.7 million viewers.
I hope it does go up but i doubt it.

  12. the128boy says:

    I doubt she’ll push it above a 1.0 demo.

  13. chrisjozo says:

I’m gonna go with a .9 -1.0 range for Melrose in the 18-49 demo. I really don’t see Heather Locklear making that much of a difference at this point. Maybe if she were brought at the beginning like they did with the original cast of 90210 it might have helped but not now. Most people have already decided if they like the show and trying to change that now will be difficult.

  14. Samuel says:

Nothing, nada, no analyze, just common sense.

  15. Hot Pocket says:

Absolutely nothing not due to her but the show is a complete mess right now. It is down right awful and an embarrassment to the original.

90210 hopefully goes up even more b/c this show is on fire creatively.

  16. ryan says:

i hope it does well… i really like the cast now that, that terrible actress Ashlee Simpson is finally off the show

  17. bigboardboy28 says:

I have to agree with Hot Pocket that 90210 is amazing right now!!!!!!!!!

  18. Toby says:

I think under 2 Mio viewers! This show is dead. Perhaps this week a better rating, but next week it will be bad again.

  19. Christian says:

Of course the ratings are going to trend downward sharply next week.. it’s a rerun! Monday and Tuesday shows are returning with new episodes in two weeks! Who knows what goes through Dawn’s pea brain.

  20. mike says:

    absolutely nothing

    this show is toast

  21. Julia says:

CW is running repeats during November sweeps, days before any sort of Thanksgiving slump could be expected? Huh?

  22. Wanda says:

    1.7 million and 0.9 18-49..

  23. Christian says:

Exactly my point, Julia! The next episode of Gossip Girl is a thanksgiving one so they’re going to air it after Thanksgiving which also makes no sense! Maybe Dawn will move to NBC next!

  24. Ricardo says:

    For tonight.

    A18-49 0.9

    Because… who cares about that?

  25. steven says:

    If I was generous: 2.24 million/2.1 for 18-49

    But realistically, 1.8 million/1.7 for 18-49

  26. Julia says:

Steven, you think it’s realistic to think that Melrose Place would go up an entire ratings point in A18-49? 1.7 would most likely make it the second highest rated CW show in the demo for the week. And that’s your realistic guess?

  27. steven says:

I don’t know. Maybe I’m saying 1.7 because of the Locklear Hype. I know it would be tough for MP to increase a point in the adult demo, but it can be possible.

Otherwise, it will fall heavily the following episode.

  28. Christian says:

You would need at least 2.2 million viewers 18-49 to get a 1.7 in that demo! So Steven thinks realistically that Melrose can get 1.8 million viewers overall with 2.2 million 18-49 year olds. Haha!!!!

  29. steven says:

OK, so maybe I am guessing too high or strangely. I didn’t pay too much attention for demo.

    My new guess: 1.9 million/1.3 in 18-49.

  30. Major Mike says:

What will Locklear’s return mean? We get to see her horrible plastic surgery in HD. #fail

  31. X-R.G. says:

Hmmm…interesting that they’ve been having 20 year olds on these shows – that NOW their turning to someone more seasoned to save this show…but are 20 somethings or even teenagers going to care…?

    I predict a:
    1.4 million viewers…and a tick upward on most demographics…for tonight…then business as usual…

  32. glen says:

I agree tonight’s episode will see a ratings spike, due to the curiosity of the original MP viewers of wanting to see what Heather looks like. Then it will probably be back down, but she may help the show somewhat. It is ironic in that the new MP seems geared toward younger viewers, ones who aren’t even familiar with who Heather is. (Maybe they remember her from the short-lived LAX show on NBC a few years back. )

  33. X-R.G. says:

maybe CW & NBC should merge now and call themselves DZN:
    The Dawn & Zucker Network

  34. spotupj says:

I don’t think very much of the “CW demo” cares much about Locklear or remembers her on the original, but it’s hard for me to believe that this huge promotional blitz is going to amount to absolutely nothing. So I say an above-average 1.75 m and 0.9 demo.

  35. The_GodfatherSJP says:

0.9/1.0 in 18-49. 0.2/0.3 boost tops. Their target demographic is too young to have seen the show or appreciated it much during its initial run.

  36. Julia says:

I think everyone has got it wrong here. Yes, the 18-34 demo is too young to really appreciate the bump very much. (I’m in the middle of that demo and while I remember Melrose, it was definitely too old of a show for me, and I don’t think I actually watched a single episode, though I do recall lots of promos.) But if anything increases, it will be the 18-49 demo. That is the demo that will appreciate the reference. I don’t expect a big bump, but it’ll go up more there than any of the younger demos.

  37. Charles says:

    1.8 million 0.9 demo

  38. Tom says:

    1.1/1.2 18-49
    1.0 18-34
    1.3 W18-34

I expect it to lose 75% of the increase by week three of the Locklear reign.

  39. tlctaurus says:

I hope at Heather’s return surprises all of us. I am 33 and grew up on the original and in my circle there is quite a bit of buzz about seeing Amanda back in action!

  40. GEORGE 11 says:

My prediction for tonight’s melrose place ratings!! 1.82-2.16 million viewers/1.0-1.3 A18-49!!
    but i hope for more!!!

  41. Jared says:

They should have brought in Heather from the begining. Whoever watched the show and past judgement on it already will not be watching just because of the Heather hype. As far as ratings go, I’ll be generous and say that Melrose will get 1.6 million total viewers. Otherwise the show is still a hot mess, and in my opinion will not be brought back next season. Do we even need a season 2 to begin with??

  42. Don J says:

I’m a fan of the show, but to be honest I think so many people have written the show off. And it’s going to be very hard to get new fans to watch the show on episode 9. I know people some people who won’t watch serialized TV unless they have seen it from episode 1.

I think the show will definitely get a boost. I hope it gets back to over 2M viewers and over 1.0. But, since it’s lead-in 90210 barely gets those numbers, it’s going to be a challenge.

I think Todd Slavkin and Darren Swimmer, MP’s showrunners, are probably nervous as hell right now.

  43. Shannon says:

She won’t do anything, because no one is watching in the first place. ;) Sadly this show could have worked; it had great potential, but I was turned off it by the 3rd episode..

  44. Fabio says:

1.0/3… Maybe… but i’m not sure that NOW she can make the differt for the show…

  45. ryan says:

does anyone remember what the premire was?

  46. Julia says:

    Series premiere for Melrose Place:
    Viewers: 2.309
    A18-49: 1.3
    A18-34: 1.6
    W18-34: 2.6

  47. Anna says:

Heather + platic surgery + botox = Goodbye Melrose Place 2.0!!

  48. Bill Gorman says:

Anna, so cruel you are! She’s a year younger than I am!

  49. David77 says:

let s be realistic: 22,75 viewers. 11,3 adult 18-49. 13,7 adult 18-34. 21,9 women 18-34. 56,8 original melrose place fans (elders) adult 35-76. this is gonna be.. HUGE! XD

  50. Anna says:

but you didnt use botox.. you have to be proud of your original age! while.. she really want to come back to the old ‘90..

  51. Ricardo says:

    LOL

    I wanna see everybody’s face when it doesn’t even get a 1.0.

  52. Brad says:

    It’ll get atleast a 1.0…right? RIGHT?!?!?1

  53. rob says:

Im dying to know what people thought when Heather Locklear was brought on to save the original Melrose Place. Im sure they had doubts too but ratings rose 40% because of Heather Locklear. Plus she didnt begin on the show until episode 21 of season 1. Thats farther than starting in episode 10 of this new Melrose Place.

    My guess is:
    Adults 18-49: 1.2
    Adults 18-34: 1.4
    Women 18-34: 1.7
    1.8-2.2 million viewers.

I hope those who watched the 1st episode and didnt like it tune back in to watch it tonight!

  54. Serena says:

I think there would be a bit of an increase, though I don’t think it would be enough to save the show.

I know a lot of people who have been avoiding the show because Ashlee Simpson-Wentz was doing terribly and are waiting to tune in to see how her character will be written off. However, if they do it well and Heather Locklier’s storyline seems interesting, I think they can retain the viewers they gain.

  55. Tego Livi says:

I don’t think the mere fact of her appearance will do much to boost the show’s ratings, but if it signals a higher-quality, more buzzworthy show, it could be the start of an upturn in the ratings.

  56. James Newton 25 says:

    90210 is COOL!

  57. Rich says:

OMG I really hope Locklear will help the show stay on, i really like the show and have been watching every week and now im really into it. It just seems like everytime i get into a show it gets canclled, maybe Locklear will help get the viewers to 3 million with a 1.4 18-49.

PS—-It was a good choice to take Ashlee Simpson off the show sorry but she can’t act at all!!!!!! But i feel bad for that very hot guy Colin Egglesfield he was awesome! Does anybody else think he looks like Tom Cruise?

  58. Mark says:

Heather is back for tonights episode and next weeks, so if the people who tune in tonight like it, they might tune in next week too.

  59. Joe says:

Heather Locklear’s return to Melrose Place will mean, and do, absolutely nothing to the show’s future…other than guarantee a cancellation. I am not watching this incarnation of MP. Never had a desire. I actually stopped watching the original series during the middle of the next to last season because it was beyond pathetic. Hollywood is SERIOUSLY showing signs of aging when they have to bring back shows from the 80’s and 90’s. I mean, what is next from Hollywood for bringing back TV series; a new Knight Rider, a new Bionic Woman. Oh wait…they already tried that and it didn’t work (HINT HINT Hollywood). I never watched (either incarnations of) 90210, but understand that is doing a little better. I will watch Heather’s return tonight, strictly out of curiosity, but am not really expecting much.

  60. JenSmith says:

come on, no need to pick on her age. But nobody will stay young forever even if it seems that way when one is actually young. So,I’m a little defensive because she’s only 3 years older than I am. I watched her on her Dynasty/TJ Hooker Days.

That said, I don’t think anything much will change. CW’s target Demo wasn’t born or were small children back in the day. Will older people tune in ? I’m not sure why? Granted, I’m biased. I didn’t like MP back then, and have no interest at all today.

  61. Josh says:

Has anyone seen any promos for her return? I haven’t seen any.

  62. JenSmith says:

@Josh. Yes. It seems every time I flip past the CW I see that (mho silly) promo. It’s on youtube if you care to see it. (search cw heather promo)

  63. Dingo says:

I’ll say it again. The 1990s ended. The days when making Heather Locklear a “special guest star” boosted a show’s numbers are over too.

There will probably be some curious viewers tonight but if Locklear is such a hot property, why was she available to do Melrose Place? Why wasn’t she already under contract elsewhere?

  64. forg says:

    My guess:

    Viewers: 1.5 million
    A18-49: 1.1
    W18-34: 1.3

  65. cool says:

    2.78 million
    A18-49: 1.2
    W18-34: 1.5

  66. Riff Rafferty says:

Well, I just got done reading a thread on the increasingly-insipid PI in which one “CW Generation” poster wrote that they had no idea who Heather Locklear even was before she was name-dropped on the forum. Does that answer your question?

Seriously, those irritating children over there aren’t even worth parodying anymore.

  67. Studude190 says:

I hope people tuned in. It was a trashy treat like the old one for the first time this season. I really hope it works out. Amanda is back.

  68. Rich says:

Well i just watched Melrose and i really like Heather Locklear she made it so much better it was great and what a b***h she was!! I hoped it helped the ratings!

  69. Paul 80 says:

The main reason the CW ( and I think it is Paramount production ) is trying so hard to save the show is, it had great international sales from day one.

  70. Robert says:

Tonight’s episode was really, really great. Seriously, you guys should give it a shot. It’s headed in its original direction. It was fun, fast paced, and everyone stepped up their game.

  71. igotid88 says:

    20 million viewers and 5.9 18-49

  72. usedtolovecoco says:

It’ll get a slight bump, partly because they advertised the hell out of it.

  73. onahigh23 says:

All the naysayers prepare to be surprised. Heather was awesome tonight and I bet all 2.6 million viewers will agree…(My prediction) long live Amanda!!!

  74. vsaint says:

Heather Locklear itself won’t do too much. But since they are retooling the show, like 90210 did mid-season last year, there’s a chance.
There killing 2 of the 3 boring characters on show. And the producers did say the second half will be very Heather centric.
If it increases to the point where it’s hanging onto 90% on 90210, i think it has a chance of renewal. Dawn will be saying, look what happened in second half when Heather was brought in, we got the ratings we wanted.

  75. Heather’s been gone too long to make an appearance by her in anything much of a show-stopper. Those who saw the original series may tune in to see how she does, but it will have no other effect. As some have said here, a lot of people are too young to remember her in the original series.

I actually never watched much of Melrose Place. In fact, the only two people I remember from that show are Courtney Thorne-Smith and Marcia Cross – who I discovered then was THE best looking woman on TV (at the time) – and she’s still the hottest redhead today!

  76. Paul says:

i had a dream, 3.57 million 1.5 18-49, i highly doubt this but anyways we’ll see if i can be psychic one day:L

  77. ryan says:

i hope it does well, saw it last night and Heather was awesome, and evil

  78. mark-allen says:

    WOW…

just watched the show and it was fantastic…much better than i had expected.

anxious to see the rating…but if word of mouth gets around…i don’t think there will be much of a drop when the show returns in 2 weeks.

  79. Alex says:

Just saw it and have to admit it’s certainly looks different now and surprisingly good.

  80. XSEDrake says:

Fantastic episode! Let’s hope people watched.

  81. Julia says:

They didn’t, at least not more than they have been.

Viewers: 1.541 (Avg for new episodes is 1.579)
A18-49: 0.8 (Avg for new episodes is 0.9)
A18-34: 1.1 (Avg for new episodes is 1.1)
W18-34: 1.6 (Avg for new episodes is 1.6)

So, basically it was right on par, or slightly below, season averages.

  82. Karen says:

Meaning the show double from the week before it was a 0.7

    Great news for the CW!

  83. Julia says:

Karen, last week the show was 0.7 in the A18-49 demo. This week it was 0.8 in that demo. Nothing doubled.
