Update: Trauma un-canceled: NBC orders 3 more episodes

Posted on 19 November 2009 by Robert Seidman

trauma

Update 3:25p: a big fat TOLDJA! coming soon from Nikki Finke!  James Hibberd reports NBC has ordered 3 more episodes of Trauma.

Update 3:50p: Thanks to E! Online/Watch With Kristen’s Jennifer Godwin  for alerting me that it’s 3 additional hours, not four.

original post:

We’ll probably have to wait for the mid-season schedule announcements or some official word from NBC, but Nikki Finke is reporting that NBC will order additional episodes of Trauma (and that all the reports on blogs that it wouldn’t order more episodes were wrong!).

Finke cites improving ratings as the reason more episodes will be ordered, but if the rumor is true, it seems way more likely that NBC would order additional episodes only due to lack of bench strength and desperation.   The show reportedly costs a lot to make, and the recent ratings improvements have been small, rather than “wow, where did THOSE ratings come from?”

In fact, the only ratings improvements we have seen have been in preliminary numbers which, when finalized showed no ratings improvements.  Monday night’s Trauma scored a 1.8 adults 18-49 rating in the preliminary numbers, and a 1.8 in the finals.  It’s better than a 1.7, but…

Stay tuned…

Update: on the point of lack of bench strength the commenters are speculating that any additional episode order for Trauma can only mean bad things for Parenthood (though with only 3 extra hours being ordered it doesn’t seem likely it has much to do with Parenthood).

  1. So all those people making fun of traumagirl (I think? That was the nick of the Trauma fan wasn’t it?) over the last few days have some apologies to make ;-)

  2. zzzoe says:

what recent ratings improvements has trauma shown?

  3. Julia says:

There were no improved ratings, so Finke is either completely blind to anything other than what is whispered in her ear, or, well, there is no other option.

  4. Chuck Tranberg says:

If this is in fact true (and I’ll wait for something official) that bodes well for “Mercy” which has performed better than “Trauma” both in total numbers and in the demographics. And it costs less than “Trauma” too.

  5. Tommy says:

The reason I don’t think it’s even true is because when it was reported that Trauma wasn’t going to get additional episodes NBC would have been all over it correcting the reporting if it was incorrect.

  6. Julia, it’s possible Nikki makes a mistake I have made from time to time and confusing Heroes and Trauma. There’s no chance NBC made that mistake though.

  7. Julia says:

So she attributed Heroes 2.2 to Trauma this week? No, I think I’ll stick to my theory. :)

  8. Brad says:

Mercy already got a full season pickup and has improved in ratings since that point (albeit not by much).

If this is true its because NBC has no other options. Unless they can’t because of DirecTV deal, they should push FNL to launch in February.

I can only assume Parenthood is screeeeeeeeewed.

  9. Brad says:

I could see Heroes getting 6 additional episodes if it was indeed the ‘final’ season to wrap things up…but I’m still in the camp that NBC will give Heroes a Fifth and Final season to wrap things up (and since it still pulls decent ratings). It should be into syndication numbers fairly soon.

  10. Bill Gorman says:

Parenthood being out of the picture could produce sudden, otherwise unexplained behavior.

  11. Jesse says:

What else does NBC have to air starting in January besides Parenthood? I know Day One was truncated to a miniseries, and with three hour slots on Sunday opening up (8-11 once football’s gone), they need something to put there.

  12. Julia says:

Jesse, Celebrity Apprentice will fill two of those hours on Sunday.

  13. Julia says:

Parenthood being out of the picture could produce sudden, otherwise unexplained behavior.

That’s the only reasonable explanation that I can come up with. Hope this completely kills any other remakes of Parenthood that might spring up ten years from now.

  14. Jesse says:

I also don’t think Jay will be back next fall, despite what NBC said about a “two-year” commitment. Because of that, both Mercy and Trauma might even see second seasons rather than NBC having to replace more than 15 hours on its schedule.

  15. Jesse says:

Julia, NBC only does a Parenthood show about every 20 years, not 10, lol. (Last time being the half-hour version with Leonardo DiCaprio back in 1990).

  16. Julia says:

Yes, I meant 20. For some reason I was thinking that early 90s was only 10 years ago. It’s one of those days…

  17. good grief says:

with the olympics coming up soon they probably just want to air something up to February

  18. Tar says:

maybe its 4 episodes or so to run in January so they dont lauch Persons Unknown or Parenthood ? or maybe parenthood is being reduced to like 6 episodes or something? Persons has all 13 filmed already so i hope NBC premiere it in season and not as a summer series or on friday or something

  19. Tar says:

Jesse they have 100 questions 30 min comedy, and the intriguing Persons Unknown trailer : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yrIi_D-VoLs
plus a lot of game / reality shows

  20. good grief: since they ordered additional episodes of Chuck and planned to run Heroes all the way through to the Olympics they could have paired Chuck and Heroes from January-Olympics. If this winds up happening other issues must be involved.

  21. Brad says:

    Jesse,

NBC may have no choice but to bring back Leno. There is simply not enough shows that would be coming back next year unless half their schedule is *new* stuff. The only shows that I consider a given for renewal is Office, 30 Rock, SVU, Biggest Loser and American’s Got Talent. Heroes and Chuck are probably 75% chance, FNL is 100% but that’s obviously just space filler. Everything else is questionable. They have tons of open spots and 5 additional hours…oh gees.

  22. Brad says:

With Graham now casted, what’s the stall with Parenthood? Shouldn’t they be in production already? I can only assume with an original Fall 2009 launch date they had some scripts written or atleast a general outline ready.

  23. phantom says:

ABC should take notes and order at least 2 to 3 additional episodes for Eastwick so at least they could wrap it up.
But I still think it could be good for ABC with a little help. Let’s face it, it didn’t have any.

  24. F. says:

If they are ordering more eps of TRAUMA, it’s like it will be less than a 22 order and will be a filler for some freeing hours: that one on Sunday? Or if they would hopefully take back a night from Jay, or they’ll just keep repeating TRAUMA on the two nights and try to recoup that way.

  25. Michael J says:

Lol, I was waiting for someone to jump on the Eastwick bandwagon.

  26. Brad says:

    F,

at best, it’ll be 3-5 episodes just for filler until the Olympics start.

  27. UH says:

Oh well…when I was starting to think I have learned something about TV business in US ……

Or Nikki Finke understood “pears for apples” or I did not understand anything :)

( Ok I vote for the second )

  28. Smallville says:

Awsome now all my new shows have gotten a back 9 im excited. How many more episodes are they ordering exact tho? And will it be back in janurary or now or march?

Bill or Robert or Julia please comment back, Thanks

  29. Bill Gorman says:

Smallville, we don’t know any more than what you can read in Finke’s post. And if it turns out to not be correct, we may have known more before we read it!

  30. Julia says:

Smallville, if this is even true, which is still yet to be determined, there’s no word on how many episodes will be added to the order. All it says is that the 13 episodes will be produced and more will be ordered. More could mean anything from as few as 1.

  31. Smallville says:

    Ok thanks

  32. Wendy says:

Perhaps NBC is ordering enough episode of Trauma to cover the January/Feb gap because they’re sticking with the original plan to launch Chuck after the Olympics and give it an uninterrupted run; plus it would give Parenthood the extra retooling time they’d need. But then that would mean Chuck running into the summer months with 19 eps…and while that would provide a way to test the waters on full year programming, NBC is having enough trouble filling in their regular season schedule as it is.

If Heroes will run out of new episodes before the Olympics, then this ’sort of’ makes sense because then NBC won’t have to worry about viewer loss on Heroes associated with a time change…there’s no way that they’d bring Chuck back in January and give it the 9pm Monday slot, they’d push Heroes back to 9pm and put Chuck in at 8pm against House/Bachelor/HIMYM. But moving shows is tricky and Heroes following isn’t as strong so perhaps NBC is worried about a time change causing further bleed out. Does anyone know when Heroes will wrap for the season?

This might be NBC just gritting their teeth and toughing it out until the Olympics so they can start fresh with Chuck/Parenthood together on Mondays.

  33. Bill Gorman says:

There are 13 weeks between the end of the Olympics and the end of the TV season. With 19 episodes of Chuck now ordered. Either it airs into mid-July, or it starts before the Olympics.

Edit: Or they air more than one episode per week, which would be very unusual.

  34. Brad says:

They ordered 6 additional episodes of Chuck which would be a perfect fit for January up until the Olympics.

  35. Julia says:

What this most likely means is that they will not be airing Parenthood during the regular season, at the very least, and possibly not at all. Chuck will air in January, paired with Heroes, while Trauma breaks until after the Olympics. They will then be paired together for the remainder of the season. I can’t see any other possible reason why they would order more Trauma.

  36. Parenthood says:

Does it spell trouble for Parenthood, Chuck or Jay Leno?

  37. Rick Holy says:

Am I remembering incorrectly, or didn’t Ms. Finke make a huge blunder about some program not too long ago (maybe last Spring) – it may have been CHUCK – I don’t remember. But I seem to remember she had some big “scoop” that turned out to be false in the end. Could this be another screwed up “scoop” as well?

  38. Bill Gorman says:

Parenthood, maybe. Chuck and Leno, no.

  39. Rick Holy of course it could! We’ll see.

  40. Julia says:

Rick, Finke is a revisionist. She appears to always be right because any time she’s wrong, she edits or deletes the evidence. So, yes, this could be wrong.

  41. Bill Gorman says:

Rick, I don’t recall anything like that. And since Nikki has been shown to ruthlessly edit posts in which she made errors, only cached pages via Google might be able to figure that out.

But I have saved a copy of her Trauma post for later revision control! ;)

  42. probably should add this to boilerplate of any post citing Nikki:

    http://gawker.com/5392863/why-nikki-finke-never-makes-a-mistake

  43. Rick Holy says:

But does anyone remember in particular the screw up to which I’m referring. I seem to recall it has something to do with CHUCK – maybe a “premature” renewal scoop (but then again I’m a Chuckaholic so I may falsely remember many things as being CHUCK-related). Anyway, if she’s wrong about this one, too, then her word might as well be written on toilet paper – a cheap, generic, “unreliable” toilet paper. What do you believe anymore? Didn’t Ausiello (or however you spell his name) say his “moles” at NBC were saying that Chuck was coming back at the end of October? Seems like these people just make s**t up so that we start talking about them and give them attention. Oh, well. It’s a strategy to keep their names (and columns) front and center.

  44. Julia says:

I think what Rick is referring to is when she claimed that there would be news about Chuck’s renewal by “Monday.” There wasn’t, despite her fans storming the comments here saying she’s never wrong.

  45. Rick Holy says:

Thanks, Julia. I think it’s coming back to me now. She predicted some big announcement about the future of CHUCK to happen on a Monday – and it didn’t come until much (maybe weeks) later. You’ve got a good memory!

  46. Strongher says:

Ok that kinda confirms Heroes Season 5 since Trauma cost them 3 times more than Heroes…

  47. Bill Gorman says:

Just as an FYI, here are Trauma’s 18-49 final ratings from premiere through 11/16.

    2.2, 1.7, 1.8, 1.8, 1.9 , 1.9, 1.8, 1.8

So much for Nikki’s reporting of an increase.

  48. Tom says:

I said it in the other thread, but in my mind, either:

    Parenthood is dead/summer.

    Persons Unknown is dead/summer.

    Or both.

  49. Nikki probably is focusing on total viewers. She’s been out of the demo for a while, and since it’s all about her, things that happen that don’t involve her (like adults 18-49 ratings) don’t matter! ;-)

  50. johnthemon says:

I wouldn’t be surprised if they moved Parenthood back to next fall.

  51. Michael J says:

Lol, the battle of the blogs!

  52. Julia says:

Here’s the trend in total viewers:

    6.675
    5.365
    5.489
    5.458
    5.775
    5.824
    5.349
    5.176

    Still no recent upward trend.

  53. Nope not even total viewers works: here’s the last four (including Monday finals)(millions):

    5.775
    5.824
    5.349
    5.176

edit: Julia obviously faster. But what about the all important 55+ demo? ;-)

  54. Brad says:

IIRC, didn’t she say Medium was renewed on NBC?

  55. Mumbo says:

I was going to say “well, isn’t Trauma up in the Renewal Index?” but it’s been pretty much even there, so. And Finke wouldn’t think like that. So she’s full of it.

If it happens (I could see them ordering an additional 5, like ABC with the forgotten), it’s a case of NBC frantically plugging holes in a Swiss cheese ship I imagine.

  56. MichaelJA says:

I have to say that I’ve checked out the last few episodes of Trauma and they were suprisingly well done much better than the first few. If this is true about ordering more episodes then the thought process might be that see potential for growth with the show, plus the problems with parenthood. Also they have to be thinking about next season too with Leno in Primetime not what they had hoped for.

  57. coolbreeze says:

Nikki Finke is wrong quite often. But as others have noted she will rewrite or delete previous posts with no comment or acknowledgement of the change. Part of the problem is that Finke might have sources, but she has no f’n idea what she is talking about. She has zero business sense. So she relies on others to tell her what to say, the downside to that is ‘others’ will use the opportunity to get their spin on the initial story. Let’s be honest no body changes their opinions in a matter of minutes. She simply writes what someone tells her to write, and when she gets a few calls telling her how stupid her post is, she changes it to reflect what people are telling her again. I love when she posts a story then says she will have an analysis later – why not go ahead and give your analysis while you are posting the story? If its your opinion and you are already typing about it , why would you stop? The only reason is because she has to get someone to give her ‘her’ analysis (sometimes no analysis follows).

Bottom Line: Finke is brainless and lacks any integrity, but she has a lot of sources (probably because said sources know they can use her as a witless mouthpiece when necessary).

    [rant over]

  58. ken says:

Rick, I thought it was that Chuck and Medium were to be renewed before upfronts, then the announcement was delayed for two weeks for a meeting with advertisers.

  59. ken says:

And that was why we got the 14 days of Chuck series of posts in May.

  60. spotupj says:

The really shocking thing about this story is that people still read Nikki Finke. ;)

  61. Audrey says:

Rick, I recalled Finke said NBC renews Medium, Chuck, and another show last spring.

  62. Vetinari says:

Bad news for Leno more than anyone else, I suspect.

But it seems like a good move overall. I am not a fan of Trauma but the one episode I did see seemed like a relatively solid show, not my kind of thing at all but it seemed to work well enough for what it was trying to be.

  63. Mumbo says:

“Bad news for Leno more than anyone else, I suspect.

But it seems like a good move overall. I am not a fan of Trauma but the one episode I did see seemed like a relatively solid show, not my kind of thing at all but it seemed to work well enough for what it was trying to be.”

Tuesday Leno outperforms Trauma, for less than 1/6 the cost.

And assuming this article isn’t a load of bull, even if Trauma gets additional episodes it’s basically guaranteed it’s not back next fall.

NBC’s bench seems to be getting thinner and thinner, there’s no way they *can’t* keep Leno on.

  64. CK says:

I’ll wait for Ausellio, THR, and/or Variety to report this. Seems a little too improbable.

  65. Bill Gorman says:

How is this bad news for Leno? There is absolutely *zero* chance he comes off the schedule before the end of this season. Zero.

  66. Lucy says:

Does it bring more problems for Heroes (i.e. less money)?
Please, we Heroes fans do not need more problems. We are hoping to get their 9:00pm slot!

  67. shelly says:

I’m waiting for someone else to report this, too. Yes, NBC is in the crapper but I doubt even they’d resort to picking up a show that’s already a loser for them.

Didn’t Leno sign a 2-year contract with NBC? He’s probably not going anywhere anytime soon.

  68. Parenthood says:

Julia, what do you have against Parenthood? It has a great premise. It has a great cast and it has Lauren Graham from the Gilmore Girls. I’m thinking that NBC ordering more episodes of Trauma has something to do with the fact that NBC wants to save Chuck til after the Olympics and run it into the Summer. Into the Summer? WTF? Well, if you recall that Nick C made a post about NBC wanting to air Chuck in the summer and use it as a launch pad for summer programming. Like airing Chuck from March thru July.

  69. Jesse says:

If the Comcast deal to buy NBC goes through, I could see a JayLeno-less schedule like this in the spring:

    SUNDAY
    7-Dateline
    8-
    9-Celebrity Apprentice

    MONDAY
    8-Chuck
    9-Heroes
    10-Trauma

    TUESDAY
    8-Biggest Loser
    10-Law and Order:SVU

    WEDNESDAY
    8-Parenthood
    9-Law and Order
    10-Dateline

    THURSDAY
    8-Community/Parks and Rec
    9-Office/30 Rock
    10-Persons Unknown

    FRIDAY
    8-new game show
    9-Dateline
    10-Mercy

    SATURDAY
    8-11, repeats

It wouldn’t take much to dump Leno and get back in the 10 PM business….heck, they’d only have to add one Dateline to the current schedule.

  70. some people’s emotional reaction to The Jay Leno Show hits them over the head with the stupid stick, and otherwise rational people say some pretty crazy s–t.

If Finke gets a TOLDJA! out of this and NBC needs to order more episodes of Trauma, that’s bad news for NBC, perhaps. but it isn’t any news at all with regard to Jay Leno.

Edit: The notion that Leno’s fates would change as quickly as the spring schedule as a result of a potential Comcast acquisition is definitely in the realm of “wacky”.

  71. Jesse says:

Forgot Sunday at 8, mean to put one of the reality shows NBC has in development there.

  72. Jesse says:

BTW, I’m not saying Comcast/NBC WOULD dump Jay before the end of the season…only that it’s not out of the realm of possibility. And really….if they ever want to be back in business at 10 again, the sooner they cut their losses, the better.

Regardless, I don’t believe for a minute Jay will be on at 10 next fall.

  73. Jesse: I’m saying it is out of the realm of possibility. Forgetting about what Comcast might want to do (if you were running the show, anyway), by the time any Comcast acquisition was approved by regulators it would be too late to change the fates of the spring schedule.

  74. rodshooter says:

In the long run, NBC made a good decision. Trauma’s ratings haven’t actually been too bad where they need to cancel it. It just has yet to get its own audience yet. I think NBC should definitely move it elsewhere on the schedule like Wednesday Nights b/c SVU is getting creamed by CM every week.

  75. Julia says:

Parenthood is a retread of a retread, which seems to be cursed behind the scenes. While saying that it appears doomed is nothing but an unbiased observation of the situation, why would anyone want to support a show that will be the least original show on air this season if it ever makes it? And the casting is only half the reason I say that.

  76. Jesse says:

Robert, but Zucker is already supposedly going to run the new Comcast/NBC endeavor…and he’s already downplaying the “managing for the margins” thing. I don’t think it’s impossible by any means that Jay is gone from the 10 PM slot before spring.

  77. MichaelJA says:

Isn’t Jay quote in a recent interview that he would take the 11:35pm timeslot if offered?

  78. rodshooter says:

Jay will definitely play out its contract until the end of the season but I think NBC is going to have no choice but to bring the 10pm hour back.

  79. Paul PT says:

NBC don’t have any inspiration to make new hit shows!

NBC shoul cancel Jay Leno Show, and order a daily dramedy series for the 10 pm slot.

with a good story and with only one season.

they shoul try this formula in Spring.

  80. mayorofsmpleton says:

*Why would anyone want to support a show that will be the least original show on air this season if it ever makes it?*

Gee, sounds like comments from someone who hasn’t seen even an episode–because nobody has. Not that I expect much from someone who thinks GLEE is misogynistic. ;)

  81. Parenthood says:

Julia, the casting on Parenthood is good. The pilot got a good thumbs up from the critics. That was before Maura Tierney was replaced by Helen Hunt, who in turn was replaced by Lauren Graham. In fact, I picture Lauren Graham in the Maura Tierney role better (Sorry, I don’t know the characters name) than Maura Tierney. Retread? Look at Buffy. That was a remake of a movie too and it was a great show that lasted several years. Remake? Look at Battlestar Galactica. That was a remake of a 1970s tv show and that lasted for several years while gaining critical acclaim.

  82. Julia says:

A remake of a remake is unoriginal to the power of two, by definition. You don’t need to see an episode to know that. I’m sure there will be people who like it, simply because Lauren Graham seems to have fans who put blinders on when she’s involved, but that won’t change that it is still a remake of a remake.

  83. Schmoker says:

I bash NBC and the Leno move as much, or more, than anyone, but even I don’t believe they will pull before the end of the season. No way. I don’t even think they will completely pull him after the season. My read is that Leno comes back for a reduced number of nights next season, depending on how many shows they can pull together by the time up-fronts come around. I’m betting it’s two nights of Leno, maybe three, next season.

By the way, two nights of Leno a week would be a smart move, at least in the short term. I could definitely see that working out fine for them. I’m thinking Tuesdays and Fridays. Maybe also Thursdays.

As for Finke, her name says it all, doesn’t it?

  84. coolbreeze says:

    Jesse,

I don’t know why you are having such hard time grasping the reality of the situation… JAY LENO IS NOT GOING ANYWHERE ANYTIME SOON!!!

That is not changing no matter who is in control! First of all the show is profitable while other NBC shows are losing a lot of money, second even if the the show went into the red, NBC would want to find out how the show woudl perform against repeats before any decision to remove it from the schedule is made. The information alone is valuable to them as it provides concrete data on alternate programming options (and no matter how low Leno’s ratings fall it won’t be huge financial drain on the network).

So, I will repeat Leno is not going to be removed from the spring schedule (or summer schedule either).

  85. Parenthood says:

My point is sometimes remakes are good. Almost no one remembers the 1990 tv show. And Ron Howard, who is behind this version, directed the movie. And just because the concept is a remake doesn’t mean that the show won’t have original stories.

  86. Dingo says:

As I’ve said more than once, Jay Leno is a stopgap at 10. He’ll be a stopgap until at least May. Probably to September. If he does have a second year guaranteed, he’ll be on the air next year too. NBC could pay him next season to work on his fleet of classic vehicles and perform stand-up at a club near you. Or NBC could pay him to do a show. NBC will pick the latter.

Leno at 10 is NBC’s way of keeping Conan O’Brien and Leno away from competing networks. Primetime Leno is also a cost-effective way of keeping the hour stable. Competitive on select nights but stable every night for much less money. NBC will eventually program different shows weeknights at 10. Well, maybe two or three Datelines and two or three dramas. At least more than one strip though.

As long as people are arguing about which shows with a 2 demo (give or take a tick) to keep, NBC has bigger problems than Leno. In September 2011, after NBC has a strong 8-10 Monday-Friday lineup and after NBC has a 7-11 Sunday schedule without football, talk to me about Leno. To boost the other 14 hours (17, counting Saturday) that much within 22 months would be amazing in itself.

  87. CK says:

NBC has a “house of cards” with the Jay Leno Show. To cancel the show would be easy.
Then, what to do with Jay? Pay off the contract? Move him back to 11:30? Then what to do with Conan and Jimmy? Will Jay leave NBC? Can NBC then launch 5 new hours of 10:00 programming? Dramas? Dateline? ON and on and on.
It’s pretty clear to most that JLS days are numbered. It’s just not clear how many days–likely several hundred days. Comcast is not changing NBCU leadership in the near future, but eventually someone there will look at FOX, CBS or even ABC strategies and realize there has GOT to be a better way to program a network.

  88. Joss's Biggest Fan says:

Yay! Not that I care even the slightest about this “Trauma” show, but now I have hope that Dollhouse can, indeed, be saved!

In fact, listen up, all fans of any shows that have been recently cancelled or might soon be cancelled! The cancellation CAN be undone! Nikki Finke has just proved it to be true!

While other people might damn your efforts to get a show uncancelled, this is just one of many examples where a show’s been brought back from the dead! NEVER FORGET THIS! More importantly, never forget to comment about this possibility here at TVbytheNumbers!

I don’t see this NBC version of “Parenthood” working out! My main man Joss wrote for the original TV version, and I think it is abundantly clear that the ratings will never be as high as that version!

Dollhouse! Dollhouse! Dollhouse! Dollhouse rules! “Trauma” drools! Dollhouse!

  89. Parenthood says:

JBF is delusional if he thinks NBC is going to save Dollhouse.

  90. Vetinari says:

“How is this bad news for Leno? There is absolutely *zero* chance he comes off the schedule before the end of this season. Zero.”

Really zero? Even if his ratings plummetted much further? There’s no low point at which it would be so low they’d make a change? Really? [/Amy and Seth]

I doubt they’d pull him off all nights but if it got dire enough, like he was averaging about 1.0 or less on several nights, I could see them cutting him back to 2 or 3 nights a week regardless of what they’d have to pay him with respect to his contract.

It’s *possibly* bad news for Leno in that NBC might realize that they need to keep the *option* open to replace Leno if necessary. Which requires having things to put on the air in place of it. Not having contingency plans would be amateurish businesswise for NBC.

Of course I know one can make the case that it has no effect at all on Leno and that might be right. What I should have said, and was closer to what I was thinking, is that it’s probably not bad news for anyone but there’s a chance it’s bad news for Leno. And you guys might well disagree, that’s fine, but I stand by that opinion.

Anyway, as someone else said on here yesterday, the problem with being concise is people can misunderstand you too easily so pardon the lengthiness of this. I usually try to not take up that much space in the threads.

  91. Donnie says:

It’s ridiculous to write something off just because it’s a remake. There may not be an abundance of amazing remakes out there, but there are enough to pose a solid argument that Parenthood could be a critical hit.

As for Trauma, if more episodes do get ordered it’ll be a stop gap and nothing else. Then again, NBC does love their stop gaps…

  92. Parenthood, you’re delusional for taking JBF seriously. When it comes to JBF’s parodies, the reality is he/she is making fun of people just like you!

    Long live JBF! Dollhouse!!!

P.S. JBF did you see this on Twitter from The Futon Critic? http://twitter.com/thefutoncritic/status/5868196447

  93. Tommy says:

Obviously Parenthood doesn’t understand JBF like the rest of us do.

  94. Parenthood says:

I’m not taking him too seriously!!! LOL!!!

  95. UH says:

Long live JBF ! Dollhouse forever !!! ( ok maybe in another life , but anyway…)

  96. UH says:

wow… what does it mean that tweet ? :)

  97. Hot Pocket says:

I would never write off a remake completely. Parenthood sounds like its going to be its own show and people can’t wait for it so that’s a good sign as long as the show is good enough every week.

NBC has some young shows that can grow overtime like Mercy, Trauma, Parenthood, and maybe some others on the way. They still have L&O and SVU so they’ll be safe on that end. NBC needs to fix their comedy situation and get a bigger mass audience out of it going forward. The only mistake NBC has made so far was giving up SouthLAnd which could’ve worked in the future but they let it go.

NBC will be a better network in a couple of years but the network does need to find a hit.

  98. Tommy says:

Here’s a question, If NBC is just looking for filler why wouldn’t they just extend the run of Heroes and do a few 2hr episodes? I know Heroes is only a fraction of what it once was, but it still does better in the Demo then Trauma, and it is still one of NBC best performers (how sad for them.) How much airtime could they really be looking to fill? Wouldn’t extending a few of the shows that are doing ok for them make more sense? So if this is true I only see it as bad news for one of the midseason shows, because if it was just filler there are better options out there then Trauma.

  99. Don J says:

    Parenthood:

Plus, Parenthood’s creator is Jason Katims, who is the showrunner on Friday Night Lights. Big fan of FNL and I will definitely support Parenthood when and if it gets off the ground. I just wonder if they will have enough time to shoot 13 episodes and get them ready for air in time.

I think what is hindering Parenthood right now is Katims is still working on Friday Night Lights, which is currently shooting episode 9 right now.

As for Trauma getting “uncancelled”, I’ve been watching it and I’m quite surprised. The story is by no means official until an official publication reports it.

  100. Parenthood says:

Well, these are just guesses/ hope with the Futon Critic twitter announcement. But, here are my hopes. 1)Joss Whedon and Eliza Dushku create Faith The Vampire Slayer (which they should have tried to do in the 1st place). 2) Joss Whedon joins the crew of True Blood and writes several episodes. 3) Eliza Dushku joins the cast of True Blood as Debbie Pelt. Those are just guesses.

  101. Theoacme says:

Parenthood – I think JBF was saying that Nikki Finke, neé Id, would save Dollhouse with a quick revision by her of every piece of paper showing its cancellation – including the death warrant signed by Rupert Murdoch himself…

…if Dollhouse got renewed at its present level of ratings, I would check to see if “Howling Mad” Murdoch was running FOX…

…wait a minute – isn’t that going to be a plot point on Fringe tonight? (This is not a spoiler, as the radio ads promoting the show hint at something like this.)

And could NBC save Dollhouse? Well, if FOX gave it to them for free, they might – but FOX is not Sony – thank heaven for that!

BTW – does anyone have any idea the overhead per hour of any of the networks? We can guess that a 60 minute drama costs $2 to 3 million per hour, and so forth – but say a net’s overhead is $200,000 per broadcast hour, and ad prices keep dropping with the ratings, it may indicate the underlying health of the network…

  102. Matt says:

If this is true it means one of two things.

    1) Parenthood bombs. NBC has nothing.
    2) They want to dump Leno.
    3) Some third thing I’m forgetting.

  103. lincolnne says:

As we are awaiting the “official” NBC publication to be (or not) released on Trauma’s new life, when did NBC ever publish an official statement saying Trauma was cancelled, or not ever going to order more episodes?

I have seen the numerous articles stating the NBC had not ordered more episodes YET in the past, but never an article that NBC released saying Trauma was officially cancelled or officially not ordering any episodes ever.

  104. mike says:

does this mean chuck will no longer be coming back in january and is once again pushed till after the olympics? :(

As we are awaiting the “official” NBC publication to be (or not) released on Trauma’s new life, when did NBC ever publish an official statement saying Trauma was cancelled, or not ever going to order more episodes?

I just googled Trauma-NBC and found many articles about NBC cancelling Trauma. Here’s a link to one:
    http://tv.insidepulse.com/2009/11/09/nbcs-trauma-cancelled-after-13-episode-airs-later-this-year/

  106. lincolnne says:

That is my point exactly… Did NBC write that or is the source Zap2it??? That wasn’t released by NBC directly.

  107. UH says:

Chuck… normally if you stop the production of the episodes this means natural death ( nothing else to air !!)
The”news” from Finke is that they are going to buy new episodes …

  108. Chuck Tranberg says:

    From UH:
Chuck… normally if you stop the production of the episodes this means natural death ( nothing else to air !!)
The”news” from Finke is that they are going to buy new episodes …

What are you talking about? all I did was put in a link from E-online that they picked up the story that Finke aired and gave it there own perception. You don’t have to explain what it means to me.

  109. JBF has a point, this might be a better way to get Dollhouse back on the air. Here’s how you do it.

    1. Get NBC to uncancel Trauma
    2. Buy the rights to Trauma (as in, the rights to make it.)
    3. Merge the show with Dollhouse
    4. Throw away all the parts of the merged show that aren’t Dollhouse, except for the name ‘cos you’re contractually obliged to supply NBC with a show called “Trauma”.

It’s four simple, easy, steps that any moderately intelligent TV producer could do. What could possibly go wrong?

  110. DryedMangoez says:

Great news! The show is learning from its mistakes and is definitely getting better each week. This week’s episode in particular had that perfect mix of shock and awe and the nice story of the elderly sisters. More of that heart please to balance the explosions and Trauma should be fine.

  111. UH says:

Chuck , I have understood something different sorry and also the link, for some reason, does not work so I could not follow very well the pointfrom your post

  112. Come to think of it, that might work for T:SCC. Indeed, if the fans of both shows would work together, then you could merge the Terminator and Dollhouse universes and make Dollhouse: The Traumatic Cameron Chronicles, which would actually probably be a half decent show.

  113. Ike says:

I love Joss’s Biggest Fan! ROTFL!

  114. ScienceOfTV says:

This may be very true! Over in the UK, Virgin1 announced today that it was picking up Trauma (and Warehouse 13) for a showing in spring. Maybe they got assurance from NBC that there would be more than 13 episodes? It is widely known over here that Virgin1 has big pockets for US drama and they have an empty schedule to fill after the cancellation of Terminator, Eleventh Hour and The Unit.

  115. kel says:

Did you guys see that E! namechecked/linked you in that article:

    http://www.eonline.com/uberblog/watch_with_kristin/b154580_ratings_arent_reason_why_nbc_might_be.html

“We don’t think it’s the numbers that are really the magic here (and TVbytheNumbers commenters agree with us).”

  116. Hot Pocket says:

Trauma was never really cancelled. Episodes just weren’t ordered yet. I guess Trauma’s growth week in and week out is a positive sign for NBC to keep it and once DWtS ends it might be able to grow even more.

  117. Paul PT says:

    NBC needs a extreme makeover.

My suggestion to NBC recover from this crisis, starting spring 2010:

    Sunday
    8 PM Heroes (season finale)
    9 PM The Apprentice

    Monday
8 PM A New Man (series about the next step of human evolution. The show plot revolves around the discovery that some people could be a new species)
9 PM Disability (A New drama centered on human disabilities)
10 PM Daily Dramedy Series (DDS)

    Tuesday
    8 PM The Biggest Loser
    10 PM DDS

    Wednesday
8 PM Refugee Camp (a drama series set in a fictional refugee camp could be a great show)
9 PM Law and Order: SVU
    10 PM DDS

    Thursday
    8 PM New Sitcom
    8:30 PM New Sitcom
    9 PM The Office
    9:30 PM 30 Rock
    10 PM DDS

    Friday
8 PM Only Fools and Horses (US Version)
8:30 PM Dad’s Army (US Version)
    9 PM Law and Order
    10 PM DDS

The Daily Drama Series, one season only and between 40 and 50 episodes.

  118. UH says:

So chuck come back on janaury 10th :)

  119. Julia says:

I guess Trauma’s growth week in and week out

What growth? There isn’t any metric where Trauma has grown, particularly not “week in and week out.”

  120. nkinsey says:

Here’s a big issue with Nikki. When it comes to studio head changes or other behind the scenes switches on studio levels, she’s golden. When she talks about TV program/news…I come here. Very rarely is her TV info correct or even impressive. She is REALLY out of her league on it, and it shows. Kinda like her “I TOLDJA” about Leno getting beaten by the other nets, and ONLY averaging about a 1.8 at that point. I posted that she didn’t TELL us anything that wasn’t already pre-ordained, even by NBC. Somehow my post was deleted (like many of them have been when I’ve corrected her on network stuff).

If she switches up the original post, keep us updated!

  121. Jeremy says:

This story is WEIRD. Only on NBC.

But where will they put it? Chuck is going up on Mondays now, and they’re not going to move Heroes.

Therefore I predict they’ll move Trauma to Fridays.

  122. nkinsey says:

To chime in with Julia, I want to make any flaw in Mr. Pocket’s post:

Dancing with the Stars will never end or go away. It’s the herpes of network television.

  123. Bill Gorman says:

In this case a TOLDJA! is warranted!

  124. nemo says:

well “Trauma” is beating “heroes” in terms of average of viewers, but
“trauma” is in the distant 4th in terms 18-49 adult share

…..so network also cares in average viewers after all, well maybe

  125. Schmoker says:

As I said before, I really don’t see Leno being taken off the air before next fall, but I will say that just because I don’t see it, it doesn’t mean NBC won’t do it. They are pretty nuts over there at 30 Rock.

So, is it just possible that this Trauma order has more to do with having some extra hours just in case they cut Jay back to fewer than five nights a week this season?

Probably not, but I wouldn’t put anything past NBC. Including, but not limited to, giving JBF his own show where he can spend an hour doing his sophisticated comedic stylings to an audience of dozens.

Obviously that would be a come down from the # of people who see his posts here, but it would pay somewhat better.

  126. Michael says:

Hibberd said they ordered THREE more episodes, not four.

  127. Bill Gorman says:

Michael, Hibberd had it at four and has subsequently changed it to three. I still have the excerpt in my RSS reader.

  128. Trauma is coming into its own and is a SOLID program. I watch every week.

    chuck

  129. I updated the post either way :-)

  130. Michael J says:

Sounds more like it got a stay of execution. :P

  131. weepuls_24 says:

How about put “Trauma” on sunday and the new jerry seinfeld show “the marriage ref” should air on monday pairing with chuck (*note: day one is now a miniseries, and heroes will end early this year)

  132. Schmoker says:

All I know is that my wife is now jumping up and down, and now I have to check out Trauma with her. Sigh.

  133. Riff Rafferty says:

This year’s answer to “Miss Match?” (Hey, we just ordered 4 more episodes! And we’re not going to air any of them!) Truly the shocker of the season. Especially since they just announced they’re pulling it from the schedule. Just proves once and for all they can’t say no to Peter Berg. Note to NBC: maybe if you actually tried scouting out new talent instead of asking for shows from everybody associated with the FLOP “Friday Night Lights,” perhaps you might actually find some hits.

Speaking of “Trauma,” why do the episodes seem to change title every 5 minutes? I got a press release for next week’s Thanksgiving episode, when it was called “Thank You.” Now I get a new one telling me it’s now called “Going Home.” We won’t even get into the episode after that, which I think is on its 137th title now. (As of right now it’s called “Blue Balloon,” but I’m sure they’re changing that to something else as I type.) Note to Dario: if you put as much thought into plots and character development as you put into episode titles, perhaps you might have had a watchable show.

  134. weepuls_24 says:

@Riff Rafferty – that’s normal, since producers is always finding a reason to change something. Plus Trauma’s title has always been apporiate
like next week episode will be about plane crash – “Going Home” (plane take people home etc.. and it’s thanksgiving holiday) so the title is rather relevant than the original title “Thank You”

and another example is the episode “masquerade” is about one of the show character secret sexuality. “masquerade” is a methaphor for the hidden secret

    ..though you have a point

  135. lainey says:

It probably is more of a case of them using what they already have set up in production to fill any holes in their schedule while they decided if its in their interest to replace it. Maybe they are just going to tough it out,and-I think I said this somewhere else, but maybe they also are in a “holding pattern” until it is finally known if they will have a new owner/partner in Comcast, and are not spending extra money they don’t have to until their corporate fate is decided.

  136. Mumbo says:

I think it’s the result of Day One being shortened to only four (?) episodes way back when, this is to fill in that gap that Day One’s shortening is leaving behind.

Probably came down to extending the Heroes season or the Trauma season by a few episodes and they decided to go with Trauma so that Heroes would be done before the Olympics. Maybe they held off to see how the two compared and, well, Heroes is doing a whole lot better than Trauma.

Mercy’s back 9 is probably the worst sign that Parenthood got, I’m guessing Parenthood will get a ~6-episode spring season or something.

  137. Mumbo says:

*Heroes *isn’t* doing a whole lot better is what I meant to say.

  138. davie says:

Wow, see I stopped watching Trauma after like the first two episodes or so because I read it was canceled and now it’s bringing brought back? I don’t really feel like watching them…anyone a trauma fan like that? is it good?

Heroes needs to be renewed. season four aint that bad and it’s only because of the timeslot it’s ratings are below a 2.8ish and it sucks that critics aren’t commenting how good redemption is.

  139. Samuel says:

    Wow, 3…

  140. Traci says:

Happy to hear about 3 more episodes of Trauma.

  141. Lynne says:

These three episodes are just filler episodes until Chuck comes back on January 11th that’s all, Trauma is still cancelled. NBC is so desperate for material it’s cheaper probably to continue an exhisting new show than start production on something else.

  142. Lisa says:

I have watched all of the Trauma episodes. They all suck, big-time I keep watching because I like to laugh at the horror.

I don’t recommend this show to anyone unless
    1-I don’t like that person.
    or
2-that person enjoys laughing at bad TV.

  143. ondal says:

    traumagrl = WIN
    everyone else = FAIL

makin’ an ass out of you and me with yo’ assumptions!

  144. Theoacme says:

Hmmm – “JBF and the Baron”, with JBF (played by Joss’ Biggest Fan, of course), and Baron von Raschke (played by Theoacme)…

…two wild and crazy demo analysts traveling the world, wrestling (figuratively and literally) the evils of television executives and snarky hateboyz…

…with Dr. Zworkyn and Dr. Laird (played by Robert Seidman and Julia, respectively) as the staff of the DuMont Institute, and Bill Gorman as the Hollywood CIA station chief…

  145. Bgun says:

Actually davie, the first two episodes were boring, but it gets better on episode 3 onwards. It becomes more of an action series not drama like the first 2.

  146. Michael says:

Mumbo, they knew from the start that it would be difficult to extend the Heroes season- it’s difficult to extend a serial in the middle of the season.

  147. chuck says:

Trauma is so much better than Mercy it’s not even close. Mercy is another lefty (law&order) crapload. Please stop preaching the lefty chant. Good grief.. C.Brown

  148. Matt says:

Three more episodes doesn’t make it un-canceled. I trust you all here more than Nikki so my best bet is that it is just filler.

  149. Matt, oh, it’s definitely still canceled, but I couldn’t resist the headline :-)

  150. ABCFanatic2009 says:

wow when ABC, NBC and CBS cancel their shows with low ratings

  151. Phil says:

I have never been so happy for a show before! =) Is this 100%

  152. Riff Rafferty says:

weepuls_24 writes, “that’s normal, since producers is always finding a reason to change something.”

Like I said, they’re putting an awful lot of thought into episode titles for a show which seems to have had no thought put into the title of it itself. Or much of anything else.

Speaking of trauma related shows, how fitting that NBC is taking “Trauma” off after 10 episodes, to return “whenever.” 10 episodes was exactly as many as ABC ran of the Glen Larsen turkey “Trauma Center” — “Trauma’s” apparent inspiration — 26 years ago… before putting it on hiatus right before the holidays. ABC promised to bring that back too but, guess what, they never did. Granted, they weren’t stupid enough to waste money on additional episodes, so only 3 from the original order went in the trash.

  153. Traci says:

I don’t have a problem with the 3 more episodes being filler episodes. Im just happy there are going to be 3 more. Your not telling me anything I don’t know. I read the same articles. Thanks Have a GREAT DAY.

  154. Traci says:

ps. I just wanted to add that I am learning so much about the ratings system from you all. :)

  155. Riff Rafferty says:

No bad things for “Parenthood” (you know, other than the fact that those who forget history are doomed to repeat it and insanity is doing the same thing twice and expecting a different result and whatever other sayings fit the topic at hand). They’re putting the finishing touches on the pilot reshoots and start the second episode on December 1. Never fear, fans of remakes of previously-failed series — Angela Bromstad plans to shove that one down your throats at whatever the cost!

  156. jrt says:

is there any possbility NBC could move Jay to a daily daytime show?

  157. Odin says:

Hooray for Trauma. I was thoroughly unimpressed with the first episode, but it has been steadily improving ever since. The character development is happening and the writing is getting better.
Trauma was never canceled. The fact that it’s numbers have been unchanged despite the fact that the whole world thought it was canceled is a victory for the show-the audience that it found has not abandoned ship. The show has been crippled by it’s night and time. Hopefully with a relaunch and additional episodes more viewers will find there way to Trauma. Wouldn’t hurt for NBC to to do some advertising either, which has been nonexistent since the show went to Air.

  158. William says:

Good sign for Trauma on a brutal evening. NBC could be the Tampa Bay Rays of primetime in the future. The baseball team floundered in last place not even close then BOOM! they made the World Series last year and this year had a solid team only to fall short of the playoffs. Their future is very bright. Maybe that is NBC, their “BOOM” could be in a year or two. Maybe they just need Trauma and Mercy to go a year and then evaluate. Unless the shows has a total collaspe in ratings, just air them constantly and the numbers might pick up. Plus the other shows.

Always remember, “Dallas” had numbers like this the first year. Gee, what ever happened to that show?

  159. Dan says:

NBC only did this so they would have 6 Trauma eps rather than 3 but the shows done. I wonder where Trauma will air once Chuck returns and Heroes slides to 9pm.

  160. Nick says:

If Heroes is taking Trauma’s slot this january, where will Trauma go?

  161. Julia says:

Nick, best guess is Trauma takes a hiatus until at least after the Olympics. Day One will probably fill the slot for four weeks after the Olympics, and then Trauma will return.

  162. Riff Rafferty says:

Supposedly, the show’s 12 fans mailed band-aids to NBC and NBC took notice of that.

    “Harold” must be so thrilled.

  163. Traci says:

    LOL @ 12 fans.

  164. Carol says:

I’m tired of Jay, haven’t seen that show in years. Mercy bores me, have the episodes on my DVR and have been deleting them little by little. Now Trauma, I love. I like the characters and the stories. The last episode was really good. One of the best thing is not every episode is full with sex etc. I’m able to watch it with my son and he likes it a lot!

  165. Bianca says:

I have my fingers crossed that Trauma will have a permanent slot on the air.. SAVE TRAUMA!

  166. Barb says:

I really like Trauma. I hardly watch NBC but this one is a keeper.
