I’m thinking it’s the James Franco Effect, for General Hospital.
James Franco started today. These are the ratings for the week of November 9-13.
So glad Gh is going up. It is a great show. Hope it does well in the weekly ratings, then!
Many believe this is the Jonathan Jackson effect.
I think Jonathon Jsckson has helped ratings. I think the storylines have been great and the acting is phenomenal. Also, the James Franco thing is helping too.
I think people who are fans of him are watching…and they are going to get hooked. It was smart of GH to do that.
Looks like GH is throwing down the gauntlet at DAYS…GH will be handily trounced. Manipulate the ratings all you want, Days has the fan longevity that GH lost way back…but it is a whole lot better than that trashy ABC soap, AMC.
Odd that ABC would choose to use a ratings week that was skewed by news coverage of the Fort Hood tradgedy to falsely gloat about a win over a soap that was pre-empted.
I am surprised. I stopped watching with the Sam saving Jake storyline. I find it offensive that females like Carly, Sam and Maxie are glorified. Almost as offensive as having Sonny and Jason eating all the airtime and being considered the hero’s.
ABC/Brian Frons doesn’t understand the daytime audience, that’s why the ship is sinking at ABC. Long live CBS and the Bells.
OLTL has been ABC’s best soap the last two years but the ratings barely reflect it and that’s a shame. I have enjoyed GH since sweeps started as its become appointment television for me on the old DVR. November 16-20, 2009 is going to be a huge week for GH as it should average over 3 million viewers.
No doubt the improvement at OLTL has been the addition of former Days star Farrah Fath as Gina. If I had the time to follow another soap, I’d watch just to see her in her new role. Of what I’ve seen, she’s been terrific. I would get some promos on the air on ABC featuring her character, as other Days fans would also follow her.
Glad that Jonathan Jackson is back. I haven’t watched in awhile. Turned on the tv and turned to GH. And he was there. I thought someone had put in a video of an earlier episode.
I think stunts like GH pulls are weak. OLTL and AMC had no big cast members returning or celebs coming in future. Its the stories that pull people in, not one particular performer. Yeah AMC has not been @ its best…its ratings have been pretty good, and NOW that they fired the head writer charles pratt, jr……I want NO MORE complaints. thats what people wanted
GH has the worst writers in daytime. The characters are worn out,the dialogue repetitive, the storylines stupid. If they went up in ratings it was because everyone wanted to see Jonathan Jackson, then James Franco. already though fans are posting on the boards how disappointed they are in both.
How could they be disappointed in Franco when he only started Friday. That wouldn’t be time enough to see him do much of anything.
The scenes with Jonathan Jackson have been wonderful and the writing has been better. The writers are drawing on the history of the characters when Jackson was Lucky before they ruined the character.
Amazing how the writing on General Hospital has been weak for years but they keep winning writing awards. Guess the writers choose the correct episodes because there always are gems among the bad episodes each year.
Anyway, it is a better show right now than it has been in years.
I think AMC will see a huge rebirth like DAYS has seen this past year once they move to LA. It seems like their getting prepared for their move. I predict at this time next year, AMC will be getting numbers similar to what DAYS is getting right now.
DAYS has beaten B&B on Wednesday for the number two soap of the day.
ITA with Catherine. The writing has gotten much better over the last year IMO. I haven’t waited with bated breath to watch GH since Jason lost his memory the second time. James Franco was only on Friday and the story is already intense. I am too excited.
I have to say that I was upset with the firing of GV because he was my adult Lucky and I loved him even if GH didn’t give him anything significant to work with. So I was actually disappointed with JJ came back and the first epi was like he was stuck in time. But to JJ’s credit I am drawn in and love him as Lucky again. Of course the current storyline makes me hate Liz even more than I did before because she is hurting my sweet wonderful caring Lucky who was there for her during the worst time of her life. With JJ in the role it just burns me up what Nick and Liz are doing to him. I hope GH brings a fabulous new woman in for Lucky cause I want him as far away from Liz as he can get. Liz and Nick need to go to Greece and never come back as far as I am concerned. So angry with them!
But as long as my Jason and Sam continue finding there way back to each other I am a happy camper. Just give me more ruthless Sonny instead of whiny, in love with yet another long lost love Sonny. I am one who loves the mob in PC! Revive the Qs, hook up Mac with Alexis, calm Michael down with a love interest, and fully explore the abuse storyline with Kristina and Keifer….please don’t drop it. And more Robin and Patrick!
The current pace and intensity of the show is what I love about GH and watch it twice a day!
Ohiogirl, Farah Fath is AWFUL and any storylines involving Gigi and Rex (John Paul Lavoisier) are among the worst. OLTL started improving when they got a head writer (Ron Carlivati) who respects history and legacy characters and doesn’t ignore the over 40 actors. The only OLTL watchers who actually think Fath is good on this show are those who followed her over from DOOL and they’re a small minority.
As for GH, as long as Bob Guza remains the head writer and insists on making the show “General Mobspital” and propping up horrendous characters like Sonny and Jason, I won’t be watching. I am embarrassed that James Franco chose this particular soap to be on.
Jonathan Jackson is great, but Lucky needs a better storyline.
I wish TSCC would have gotten a Season 3. Jonathan was awesome as
Kyle Reese.
Hiya!. Thanks for the info. I’ve been digging around for info, but i think i’m getting lost!. Yahoo lead me here – good for you i guess! Keep up the good work. I will be popping back over in a few days to see if there is any more info.
I think GH is a very good show..I do however wish that the mob was less prevelant in the storylines.
I think they also overuse the same characters. Carly, Jason, Sonny, Sam, etc. are all in the front WAY to much..And the storylines tend to repeat.
Honestly, I would like to see Maurice Bernard (Sonny) leave the show. Maybe it would hurt ratings at first…BUt I think the sho could rebuild itsself WITHOUT THE MOB being as prevelant as it is, and it could return to the level or prominence it had in the 80s/90s.
This is ABC spin. As a media buyer for a national top brand, I can tell you that advertisers are not fooled. ABC daytime, at a 1.5ish rating, does not compete with the other networks – or even cable.
Perhaps an entire regime change or a turn back to “super couple” style daytime could turn things around. A media director/buyer would by a 3.7 or 4.0 in broadcast daytime in a heartbeat.
Overall reduction of the total number of soaps seems inevitable.
