Wanda Sykes holds steady with adults 18-49 in second week; plus January Jones on SNL ratings

Posted on 20 November 2009 by Robert Seidman

Wanda-Sykes

In its second week, FOX’s The Wanda Sykes Show was down from the premiere in overall viewers (2.441 million vs. 2.832 million) but  held steady with adults 18-49 with a .9 rating between 11p-12a, the same as it averaged for its premiere, so there was no big drop off.  It’s still doing much better than the averages for Spike Ferensten, however, it’s not up much over Spike’s last show on 10/31/09 when it had a 0.8 rating.

Update: the 10/31 episode noted above did not air until 12:53AM on the east coast and had a World Series game as its lead in.  But it was also a repeat. Unfortunately I only have access to this season’s data and all the Spike F. airings from 9/12-10/31 were repeats.  The repeat on 10/24 (which started on time) pulled a .3 adults 18-49 rating.  The repeat on 10/10 also started on time and it had a .6 adults 18-49 rating

And for the few fans who are dying to know how Sit Down, Shut Up does at midnight, last Saturday it averaged a .5 adults 18-49 rating and 1.176 million viewers.

More people saw January Jones on Saturday Night Live last Saturday night than ever watch her on Mad Men.  For all the talk I saw about how horrible she was, the ratings were definitely not bad.  SNL averaged a 2.6 adults 18-49 rating and 6.634 million viewers, down slightly from the previous week with Taylor Swift that averaged a 2.8 adults 18-49 rating (tied for a season high) and 6.817 million viewers (a season high).

  1. kyle says:

Thank You, I am happy that you posted the Sit Down Shut Up ratings!!!

  2. Dan-O says:

Good lord, January Jones. Any time a host asks “which camera?” (out of character) on SNL is a bad omen for the rest of the episode.

  3. Samantha says:

Spike’s last show aired after a World Series game, so the ratings likely would’ve been higher than normal. Any idea what the ratings were like for the last time it wasn’t on after a game?

  4. great point Samantha, and I’ll update the post…but the thing is the Spike episodes I have access to for this season (going back to 9/12) are all reruns even the ones after the baseball games.

  5. ron says:

Spike aired this season just in reruns until Wanda was ready. Spike hasn’t aired new since last season (Spring ‘09)

  6. Julia says:

How dare you not feature this! Sexist! ;)

  7. ron says:

SDSU’s ratings are only slighly down from its Sunday 7pm airing on May 10th.

  8. JS says:

I think it was win for January Jones either way…she’s fabulous on Mad Men and deserves more exposure. Between this and her GQ cover, she’s on her way to more notice. Of course, she should just stick to drama…

  9. Elie Muller says:

What were talkshow with spike feresten’s ratings were before his show got canceled last season? I hope it has more viewers than the reruns!

  10. Brandon says:

I never look up ratings but I did with Wanda Sykes show because I really don’t want her to be on TV. People are being force-fed her lifestyle choice as being OK, and that will never be OK. I believe her show will be cancelled early, and that will lead to her being dropped from Julia Louis Dreyfus’ show which I want to watch but can’t because she is on it.

  11. idizzle says:

Wait, I can see Old Christine not being renewed, but why would Wanda Sykes be dropped from it because her FOX show gets cancelled? Wouldn’t it rather mean she’d have time to be on it more?
Besides she’s playing a fictional straight character on NAOOC, so what’s your problem with that? You aren’t being forcefed any lifestyle and my heart bleeds for you that she isn’t pretending to be white or male or whatever else rubs you the wrong way on it too.

  12. Cucumber Jones says:

Ha! I haven’t gotten a laugh like that in a couple days, Brandon. For one, what guy is anti-lesbian? Heck, I ENDORSE her lifestyle; it’s entirely awesome.

For two, come on, who actually thinks that it isn’t acceptable? That’s like saying “I don’t accept her lifestyle choice of being black.” What? Come on, pal. This isn’t the place for this conversation but lighten up. Don’t watch her show because she isn’t funny. Don’t not watch it because of her lifestyle. As for New Adventures… same thing goes. Don’t avoid it because she’s on it, just don’t tune it because it’s a pile o’ crap.

And Seidman, January Jones didn’t do THAT horrible a job. She stumbled over lines a couple of times but she worked her way out of it after 1-3 sketches. But of course her bad performance didn’t hinder the ratings; who tunes out just because of a few mess-ups? That’s part of what makes the show great. And SNL watchers will watch SNL regardless. Certainly January doesn’t bring much of an audience, but fans of the show still watch.

  13. Joe Bua says:

Brandon, I’m so sorry that you are tied to a chair in front of a TV that only picks up the Fox Network at 11 pm Saturdays.

    As if.

Whatev, I’ve been force-fed your lifestyle for all 49 years of my life, and I’m sick of it, so I want you to leave America and move somewhere else.

    See, it works both ways.

  14. Joe Bua says:

@Cucumber Jones … Your “sister” January was the second worst SNL guest host in the last 10 years, Paris Hilton being the absolute worst. Damn, I’ve hardly ever seen an actress handle comedy so poorly.

Grace Kelly had talent, January Jones seems to just be distant and confused on camera, just like Betty Draper.

  15. kyle says:

Hey Brandon since u are tied to the chair can u make your tv stay on at midnight for Sit Down Shut Up?

  16. Cyndy says:

So Cucumber – you think The New Adventures of Old Christine is “crap” and January Jones “wasn’t that bad” on SNL? Yeah, you have the taste of a vegetable….

The writing and ensemble cast on Christine is one of the best on TV, and Wanda Sykes is a fantastic part of that.

Lesbian, straight, who cares? She’s one funny bee-yotch.

  17. LMIC says:

    Wanda used to be funny.

  18. Brandon says:

Well, I see that my response has been blocked. Even though I used no profanities and I took the time to analyze the Wanda Sykes Show’s demographics. But apparently since I dared to have a moral opinion that differs from the “tvbythenumbers.com” crowd, I have been censored. I guess I should have expected that, though. The darkness always fears the light.

  19. Brandon, not sure what you’re talking about, there’s one other comment from you above, and I don’t recall ever censoring this particular thread or deleting any comments from you.

On the other hand, TVbytheNumbers isn’t (absolutely isn’t!!) an appropriate forum for you or anyone else to express “moral opinions.” We don’t have a problem with people having moral opinions, but we’d prefer people keep them to themselves or express them elsewhere.

  20. Elie Muller says:

Why isn’t the late night ratings from recently up yet? You usually have them up by this day or yesterday of every week.

  21. Elie, because of the Thanksgiving holiday falling on Thursdays, the day the numbers are usually produced/released. I wouldn’t expect them to come out today either for similar reasons. My guess is Monday.
