According to ABC, more than 1,500 people have called so far to complain about Adam Lambert’s performance at last night’s American Music Awards. MTV referred to the “American Idol” runner-up’s performance as “what might be the most NSFW performance in the history of the AMAs, one that frequently crossed the border from sexy to rather graphic, and which put some previous provocative awards-show appearances by Madonna to shame.”
The network characterized the response as “moderate.” Before his performance, Lambert said that he wanted to break down a double standard that existed where female performers are often sexually provocative while men don’t do it that often.

1,500 people need to get a life.
got that right
I just read the PTC complained too, and was worried about the impact on teenage girls. GIRLS!?!?
Huh. I didn’t catch it. Anyone got a vid link?
Perhaps the most disgusting and perverted performance in the history of non cable television. Why do people have to fake sex acts instead of just sing…it’s one thing to be sexy, but another thing to actually fake or perform actions up on stage…
Some female performers do it all the time on TV. Even last night, have you seen what some of them were NOT wearing? Clothes!
Hibberd had one posted, but it was removed from YouTube because Dick Clark Productions complained about copyright. I’m sure something is out there somewhere though if you want to hunt around a minute.
…located it. And… yeah. Good god.
A friend sent me this link though I’m not some place where I can risk opening it to see if it works. http://rickey.org/?p=28121
The New York Times gave his album a really bad review.
Julia — I got a 404 error.
it was not a big deal. so funny. they do worse stuff on family guy. and he did it at like 10:55pm at night. it was just leather and spikes and grabbing… it was g rated compared to cable, the internet and life in general. those 1500 people had to be some sort of christian organized group.
Lambert should have known better. Everyone knows you have to be a male Hip Hop performer in order to get away with anything sexually provocative. He should have told us he’d been shot 9 times like 50 Cent so that people would know its safe for Lambert to be a role model to kids. He also needs an entourage of female hookers on his arms, get arrested for illegal firearms and drugs, and then that will certainly keep any complaint calls at a minimum because all those acts are perfectly fine with parents and are far better than being… THE GAY.
There does seem to be a double standard. Female performers have been as overtly sexual. Also, one could see where the perfomance going about 30 seconds into it and all TVs have an off switch.
For some reason the number seems kind of low. I would’ve expected way more outcrying. Maybe we’re numb thanks to the Janet Jackson fiasco, or the stick is slowing being removed from our collective bottoms.
Michy, try it now.
Adam did cross the line at the AMA’s. I love Adam’s voice and I really like him as a person and voted for him to win idol, but he does need to think of his audience. I think he would have come out on top with a different set up on the show last night. Adam wants to bring his theatrics into his performances, but it’s not going to fly to well with everyone. He could do both, just play to the audience that is in the house. I looked back on my dvr and noticed even a lot of the audience at the show were not clapping for him after that performance. Adam’s voice would take him just about anywhere he wants to go, but you can’t just ignore your audience. Not every place and time is appropriate for sexuality to be displayed, whether your a man or a woman. The problem with people is they’re too desensitized to sex. They want to see sex in EVERY situation. When can we appretiate people for talent not sex? I’m a fan of Adam’s for his voice not his sexuality. In my family mode opinion, most of the lady singers on last night’s show were under dressed and provocative, but Adam was the one singer I tuned into hear, not them. He was the new one who got a chance to make it on the show to gain a greater audience, I don’t think that performance gained him anything but controversy. I really think Adam is going to learn a lesson from this in the long run. I really love his video/song of the movie 2012. I think Adam could be a huge star if he just gives respect to what kind of audience is going to viewing or listening at a live event. I think that all the running around/falling on stage didn’t showcase his voice and that is what a new singing artist needs to do is showcase his voice, not showcase what points he wants to get across. To soon for him to be taking this kind of risk, if ever in my opinion.
Just watched it on Youtube.
Only thing that went over the line IMO was the dancer’s face in his crotch. It appears that the director was caught off guard as it looked like he clumsily went to another shot. Same thing might have happened a little later when Lambert had an extended raunchy looking kiss with another girl. My guess is the performance was a bit different than the rehersal.
Freedom of expression is what our country is about, freedom of speach is one of the many things that our troops fight for. When someone actually takes advantage of those rights, he gets singled out and crucified for it? If you don’t want to see it, DONT WATCH IT! Good for you Adam.
Looks like Devin Hester should send Adam Lambert flowers for distracting the world from his posterior.
That’s not a good point.
First, In order for someone to choose to watch something different, they need to know what is going to happen. I would imagine this overtly sexual innuendo caught a lot of people off guard.
Secondly, (putting the American Music Awards aside,) this country does not protect against all expressions of freedom. The greatest misuse of freedom of expression is believing anything and everything is permissible.
Thirdly, Adam Lambert is hardly being singled out or victimized. I would bet money he is loving the attention and is thrilled his idea to create controversy went according to plan before his CD release.
Fourth, you spelled “speach” wrong.
I was more disappointed in his bad performance and terrible vocals.
(He can sing better, but he was more focused on his antics.)
What an awful way to end the Show.
I like Adam’s singing, but the fact that his performance was way over the top….not surprising to me. The cover of Rolling Stone was clue #1. I hope he focuses a bit more on his singing and less on the rest.
‘tom’ whats the problem? Are u saying that only Christians should stand up for whats right? It should be everyone’s duty; however this is not so. Artistes like Lambert are just polluting society, continually adding to demoralisation. There is enough crap on Broadcast TV… Gossip Girl anyone?
can someone please list what, in that 4 minute performance, should be censored at 10:55pm on abc? keep in mind that this an audience watching the ama’s… not accidentally tuning into sesame street.
Alright then. There are way worse stuff on broadcasting TV going on, and actually there are way worse stuff out there, if you get my point. He may have gone a little bit too over the top, but nothing really serious. It’s not something that benefit his image in any way, and i’m not saying this only to the christian audience, and yes damaging his image with the general public.
And there’s so much obsession with sex in music lately. It may have something to do with the sales’ depression.
If you don’t like Glambert, don’t watch! Adam was on at almost 11:00PM, AFTER the final award! If kids are still up at that time, that speaks to bad parenting. Change the channel you hypocritical vipers.
DISGUSTING, where do I go to complain
Just saw the performance… yawn. Adam didn’t do anything more provocative than what female performers have been doing on these same types of awards shows. This sounds like the same double standard that TV and film have where showing naked women is not a big deal but when a man does full frontal nudity, GASP!
I’m sure Adam loves the controversy. Cynic that I am, I wouldn’t be surprised if ABC wrote that bit about 1500 phone calls BEFORE Adam took to the stage.
As for the performance… Bad song. Bad vocals. And I liked him on American Idol. His performances on Idol were much more flamboyant, exciting, fun and creative.
I thought all the preformances sucked but his was the worst. Can’t believe I had to waste D minutes of my life watching that. I would have much rather heard Reba sing her new song. Love how country artist won pop/rock awards. Go country music!
Does anyone remember the Glee cast’s performance of “Push It”? That was similarly racy to some parts of Lambert’s performance, but no one except the stupid PTC complained. Is the reason for this big fuss due to people who assume ABC to be a family-friendly channel and FOX to be an envelope-pushing channel? Besides, the performance aired in the latest possible part of the telecast.
my God are people really filing complaints about this?
its crazy.
did i like it? no. will i buy his CD? no. will i ever listen to another one of his songs? probably not. but it wasn’t so bad i have to file a complaint.
i swear some people in this country LOOK for things to complain about.
There is more than one time zone here in America. It was not even 10:00pm yet if you live in the Central Time Zone. Not that it matters. Simulating oral sex during a music awards show on free, public television is just not appropriate. And I agree with all of you who say that it’s no different than Brit and Madonna kissing. You are absolutely correct! It’s all inappropriate. Lady Gaga was ridiculous with her “nude” outfit. Janet grabbing a crotch was ridiculous. That whole show was like watching a train wreck. But honestly, it was the oral sex simulation that was over the top. It doesn’t matter what point of view we have. At some point, common sense has to come into play. Anyone can pay for cable TV, internet or buy magazines if they want to see those things. But on free, public television, surely we can all agree that it’s not the appropriate forum. This is so not about “discrimination” against people’s sexual preferences. It’s about common sense. There’s a time and place for artistic impression. Mainstream television just isn’t it.
I guess the quetion is where was Janets nipple? OMG sexual implications on tv.uh just watch desperate housewives next weet
God even some people on here are complaining about it.
honestly how many kids/young impressional people even watch the AMA’s?
its not a “cool” show anymore. it hasn’t been good since maybe 2002-ish. LET IT GO.
It’s 1500 from that idiot James Dobson bunch. The world will be so much better off when these idiot religions are a thing of the past
They should have called to complain about the train wreck parade of overblown overproduced performances. You know things are rough when Kelly Clarkson is the best live vocal of the night.
Um, how is simulating oral sex no different than two women kissing?
Wow, it’s sad that it takes that much for him to actually get people’s attention! He probably would be a nobody if he wasn’t so eccentric! The thing about girls…they can look good doing those kinds of dances…Adam looked ugly. Besides, the others who usually do those performances have tenure. Like Brittany or Madonna, Adam’s a nobody now he’s a nasty nobody. It’s funny that he had to go so far out to actually get attention…hilarious!
what happened and why does anybody care about what the PTC says nowadays, or ever
Julia, I didn’t make the orignal comment, but for my money simulating oral sex and two girls kissing really are no different–they are both perfectly acceptable!!
I am not kidding. This is ridiculous. If we are going to let the most sensitive couple thousand people in the country decide what the rest of us get to see. . .
The double, triple, and quadruple standards on what is appropriate and what is not, based on ephemeral standards that vary from person to person, is part of what is strangling our society. And not just in the arts. We are all so busy being busybodies that we don’t have the time to actually produce any products or create any innovations anymore. But, hey, chicks kissing and gay guys gyrating, that we have all the time in the world to get hot and bothered about.
Anyone but me think that getting hot and bothered is exactly what is pissing some of these people off, anyway? They see homosexuals kissing and gyrating and it gets them hot and bothered, and the next thing you know they are calling congressmen to help them stop from having to deal with the weird tinglings Adam Lambert provokes in their nethers.
I though Lambert looked ridiculous and sounded worse, but who gives a hot damn? It doesn’t affect my life at all, or that of my children. And if I don’t want my kids watching stuff like that, then pretty much the whole AMAs should be off limits. Hell, music should be off limits. And you better stop them from dancing at prom too, because shaking your nethers only stirs up those feelings even more.
Just ask King David.
He is an idiot for the dancing. I would think a woman doing that stuff was an idiot too. It is low rent and desperate. He made a fool out of himself and the AMAs for allowing him to do it. Granted, he isn’t the only person to ever humiliate himself on an Awards show, just the most recent.
What offended me the most was how incredibly TERRIBLE the song was and how BAD he sang it. Seriously? That was the first time that I had heard one of his songs (I assume from his album) and man it was awful! I hope at least, that he didn’t write it, just made the bad mistake of singing it. He didn’t even sing it well. He sounded terrible. How does someone THAT bad get to perform on the AMAs? Wow. Just bad.
That person’s performance was utterly deplorable. Not even counting how horrible he is at performing in the first place.
I think the thing that bothers me most is not that so many people apparently have no moral stds anymore like Schmoker but that people like Schmoker will actually raise children with the same lack of values.
His performance is tame compared to the MTV performances I’ve seen by Prince and her Madgesty, Madonna, back in the day!
The song was atrocious, which is a shame ‘cos Adam Lambert’s voice is fabulous!
Would be much better if people called in to complain about the violence that is aired on all the crime shows and the sick and twisted ideas they plant in the minds of viewers. It’s ok to toss someone into a wood chipper on TV or run them down with a lawn mower but for the love of all things good don’t stick your crotch in someones face!!! It just might bring on the end of the world…Maybe it’s the AMA’s of 2112 that actually brings it all crashing down???
“2012″ not “2112″…Sorry, I suck
Disgusting! 150,000 should have called to complain not 1,500. Some members of society do NOT want to see homosexual perversions on television!
PizzaLegs, it is okay. 2112 is an EXCELLENT Rush album! They’ve never, to my knowledge, been accused of shoving someone’s face in their crotches!
Of course, sadly, it will BE the end of the world if those dunces at the Rock and Roll Hall of Shame ever let an amazing band like Rush in!
Totally off on a tangent. Sorry ’bout that!
Max Sleven, that just shows your true bias against gay people. This is 2009, not 1965.
Suddenly, I’m interested in actually seeing this performance. I wasn’t at all interested in it when it aired, but hey, if people are complaining about it…
There’s only half a second where I can see any justifiable outrage. The rest of it is boringly tame compared to what I was expecting.
I agree with E Online’s Joal Ryan on this. People are just making too much out of it.
http://tinyurl.com/yke4pee
“If our outrage over rock stars is nothing new, then neither are our rock stars. From Elvis’ pelvis on down, they are nothing if not dedicated to sex, more sex, the next new single, which is probably about sex, and ticking off people who prefer their s-e-x to be not so explicit, thankyouverymuch.
Criticizing Lambert for what he did, smooched and pawed at the AMAs is like criticizing that Paula Deen lady on the Food Network because she made something with butter: It’s what they do.
And the other night, Lambert did his job very well.”
“Lambert wasn’t straying from who he was; he was being who he is. He wasn’t dishonoring the stage; he was honoring music’s shock-and-awe tradition. (According to Lambert, he was getting more blowback for it because he was a gyrating guy, and not a writhing Madonna, but he was probably more in the crosshairs because he was a gyrating guy on free TV, and not a writhing Madonna on cable.)
Ultimately, Lambert was doing what he was supposed to do, and, if it was displeasing that a child somewhere saw him do it in prime time, then somebody’s bedtime needs to be moved up. (The show-closing number didn’t air until almost 11 p.m. ET/PT.)
“All hail freedom of expression and artistic integrity,” Lambert tweeted Monday.
And, the certified rock star could’ve added, “the satisfaction of a job done right.”"
My God, there were simulated sexual acts on broadcast TV?! You’re kidding me! That NEVER happens! :O
/sarcasm
The bigotry of some people astounds me. How can someone say homosexuality is morally right or morally wrong? Thats like calling a black person or any other race bad people just because they’re a certain race. Its a lifestyle just like any other. there is nothing wrong with it in any way. Am I gay? no. does 2 men kissing or doing anything else similar gross me out? yes. but thats merely because I’m straight and Im not attracted to it. Does that mean I shun it and disapprove of it? of course not. Free your minds of the bigotry and discrimination that religion has poisoned us with…then maybe you can have a valid opinion.
^^This gay man approves of you and your thoughts.
That being said, I don’t give two sh!ts about Adam Lambert. (I voted for Kris Allen. From the beginning.) Kudos to him for having a saucy man-on-man kiss to balance out that nasty Madonna/Britney/Christina hoochie threesome. But epic fail with the facecrotch and molesting of women. And also for overcaking the makeup–nasty. (He seemed attractive before the show. Now Kris’s face is like the bright blue sky to Adam’s craters.)
I think the complains to the FCC are hilarious though. If you let your kids watch this show, you’re ridiculous and deserve everything. Did you MISS the part where Shakira was getting naughty?
Also, Kathy, ITA with you!: Bad song, worse vocal performance. Like him or not, at least his voice was always aces on Idol.
While I’m sick of hearing about him, I’m actually more sick of the overhype and overpraise of the media–the relentless thrusting down our throats of his “talent”. The critic’s reviews are, in majority, fantard letters of appreciation, pushing him to be a superstar just ’cause he’s gay. It’s ridiculous, and there are plenty of other talented, indie artists who get less appreciation when they deserve more.
Seriously people need to get a life. Why can’t anything be on “free” to air television – why must I pay for television that includes so called mature content at 10pm at night. What children over the age of 12 are up at that time? And what sort of parents let their children be up at that time? CERTAINLY not responsible ones. I was always in bed by 9:30pm at the latest at that age. After 12 we are all taught sexual education at school (at least if you’re not going to some puratanical school) which includes oral sex, discussion of sexuality etc etc. Hell, some kids are pregnant at 14, 15, 16 – even those puratanical parent’s kids – look at Sarah Palin’s daughter. Does censoring and failing to educate our kids on these issues lead to a better lifestyle for them? Clearly not – I think most everyone would agree teen pregnancy is not desirable (notwithstanding there are positive outcomes).
Why don’t the puritans go pay for a channel that just has songs of praise, or censored programming? Oh wait, you can go pay for that! I get that along with all my other channels – I sometimes even watch it to listen to the nice, calming music. That’s right I actually choose what channel I want to watch.
And as for the person who said not all expressions are protected in America – well technically you’re right – but you’re basically wrong in what you’re saying. USA has the most liberal freedom of expression protection in the world. If you can have people promoting Holocaust denial then you can have a man who gyrates against another man’s crotch (simulated oral sex – whatever, if you thought it was simulated oral sex you obviously haven’t had any in a long time).
But at the end of the day you will always have intolerance. You will always have people denying that the holocaust existed or wanting to blow up buildings. I don’t want to hear about holocaust denial – and you know what I do a pretty good job at filtering it out. Everyone knew Adam Lambert was gay, everyone knew what the type of show the AMAs is, based on previous years shows AND the rest of the content in the show previously, and everyone knew that it was 10/10:55 whatever time zone you were in. If your children (under age of 12) were watching – well that’s your crappy parenting. If you were watching – and you kept watching – well that’s your choice. And really if you’re an adult and you’re really repulsed by that to the point you need to complain then you’re seriously disturbed in my book. And the great thing about freedom of expression is that I can tell you that.
Raymond says:
“But at the end of the day you will always have intolerance. You will always have people denying that the holocaust existed or wanting to blow up buildings. I don’t want to hear about holocaust denial – and you know what I do a pretty good job at filtering it out.”
And that goes double for coprophilia!
I’m not sure what Holocaust denial has to do with Lambert, though.
LOL I googled coprophilia just to find out what it was! Eew! LOL. Anyway, it was just linked it with freedom of speech arguments that were raised above. As a side note I was disgusted with a Catholic priest who explained that abortion was a terrible sin that would send you to hell but capital punishment well we don’t really like that but it’s not technically a sin. I personally find both these comments and the hypocricy more reprehensible than a bit of groping – can I complain to the FCC for this being aired on television?
@Kody
“The thing about girls…they can look good doing those kinds of dances…Adam looked ugly.”
You don’t even realize why this is offensive as all shit, do you? And that’d the problem with the world today. Things do not revolve around what you find “hawt”.
In Australia, the only music we get is like… either aussie musci or crappy female stuff like Lady Gaga or Pink, but Adam Lambert is a gay gothic rnb/hip hop singer…? WTF? How is that humanly possible? That’s almost as weird as a Chinese guy rapping with Mozart in the background.
After all the hoopla, I must say I’m disappointed in how tame it actually was!
This is clearly 1500 bigots upset to see a gay man expressing himself on TV (and not that sexually compared to what Britney & Madonna have done in the past).
hasu says:
“You don’t even realize why this is offensive as all shit, do you?”
PREcisely. Let’s consider a gedankenexperiment: If Lambert had a log of Pillsbury cookie dough as a prop in this performance, would some uses of it pass the tests of “freedom of expression” and “artistic integrity” while others failed?
I did not see the show, as I was watching a DVD of a Classic 1960s TV Show. I have been watching nothing but DVDs these last three years, largely because of things such as this Show, that they try to pass off as “Programming” these days, as well as Inapproiate Commercials being to the wrong audience. (Such as “ED Pills during Childrens Shows):(
William Hughes says:
“I did not see the show, as I was watching a DVD of a Classic 1960s TV Show.”
This would seem to go without saying. What was it this time?
If you know you can’t get stellar reviews for your talent or artistic vision, then go straight for the cheap “controversy”. Any publicity, even bad publicity, is better for a guy like Adam Lambert than a collective yawn from the viewers.
The kiss was fine. I understand why some might be a little offended by the hip thrust into the dancer’s face. That took it a bit too far for network tv. Sexually provactive is one thing. Simulating fellatio is quite another.(I’m a gay man who isn’t in any way squeamish about sex, but I find it inappropriate when sexual acts of any kind are simulated by gay or straight performers in these types of venues.)
I don’t care who is gay or not, I don’t want to see those things on television and most other people don’t either. That doesn’t mean I’m excusing Madonna or Britney or anyone else, but this was just a whole other level of inappropriate, perverted, and immoral.
Schmoker’s kids were in bed at 11 pm, so they didn’t see anything. Schmoker’s kids also get limited time with the television each week, and so would likely not have wasted that time on the AMAs anyway, because they save up their hours each week for things like BBT and Lost.
But Schmoker’s kids could see exactaly the same thing Glambert did on the AMAs every day of the week, either on General Hospital or on Gossip Girl, if they so chose to waste their time watching either of those programs.
The outrage over Glambert isn’t about the what. It’s about the who. A homo did it, so you are threatened by it, and made crazed from it. The outcry says a lot more about the criers than it does about any effect this will have on children.
Some people just need to get a life. And they also need to start showing some outrage towards GH and GG, and about 150 other shows that air similar or worse every single week.
Personally, I find the Bachelor and The Apprentice far more offensive than anything Adam Lambert could ever do. Unless he appeared on The Bachelor or The Apprentice.
Seriously, what sort of behavior example are we setting for our children with Jon and Kate and all the myriad “dating” reality shows out there, which are more twisted than anything else I have ever seen on television?
Strike that. Oprah and Maury and such are the most twisted things I have ever seen on television, with Dr. Phil being perhaps the most odious example of that genre. Those are real people behaving in really twisted ways, and it scares the beejesus out of me to think of the generation coming into our society that was raised on that crap.
Schmoker’s kids would be better off watching gay porn at the 8th St. Playhouse than watching that junk.
I have mo problem with the kiss or the face/crotch thing. But this guy was a finalist on American Idol? If he can be a finalist on American Idol why in the world do so many people like and watch American Idol. That was one of the worse songs I’ve heard in 10 years, his vocals were all over the place and he sounded like garbage
They do do more on family guy. But most people would know this going in to family guy or desperate housewifes. Thats the difference You shouldnt expect to see something like that on the ama’s. Same thing with the superbowl a few years ago.
The show didnt ent until 11 eastern well that 10 central and in mountain time 9pm(assuming it airs live there I’m not sure.) The country does not revolve arount the eastern time zone people. As much as you people in the east think it does.
Apparently girl on girl is acceptably titillating, but boy on boy isn’t okay.
Why am I not surprised?
I’m still a little freaked out by the recent Cleveland Show, all that cartoon puke and the tranny granny, my brain hurts, AMAs they’re still on, who the f*** cares, its been the most irrelevant award show and these kids today can hardly be called musicians, creative lip sinkers and attentions whores maybe but not musicians.
“You shouldnt expect to see something like that on the ama’s. Same thing with the superbowl a few years ago.”
I agree about the Superbowl, but hello? This kind of thing is par for the course at the AMAs going right back to when Michael Jackson grabbed his crotch as part of his performance.
@RealisticExpectations said: “Apparently girl on girl is acceptably titillating, but boy on boy isn’t okay.”
That was pretty much my reaction. It’s all fun and games until the boys start making out!
Just like in bowling, its real easy too aim for the gutter, but is that where you should be aimming for? Well I suppose so if you have no other game worth speaking of.
“Lambert said that he wanted to break down a double standard that existed where female performers are often sexually provocative while men don’t do it that often.”
Personally, I’d prefer if BOTH male and female performers put their pants back on and just SANG THE DAMN SONG! This forced “sexiness” is just boring – genuinely sexy performers can do it without grinding their crotches in our faces.
wow. what a double standard. i can’t believe its the year 2009 and people are still pulling this stuff. who cares if the guy wants to express himself? britney and madonna can kiss at the mtv awards but a guy can’t go a little over the top? i expect everything adam lambert does from here on out to get a huge response from the public. he has an up hill battle and i’m glad he’s shoving it people’s faces (no pun intended) instead of not being himself.
Wait a second? I don’t see the double standard at all. I seem to recall a HUGE uproar when Madonna rolled around in her white wedding dress in the 1980’s, and then later when she kissed Britney. It may be tempting to conveniently forget about it so that you all can go on accusing everyone of being homophobic, but there was a public outcry when they did it too.
All that aside, the biggest crime of the whole act was that man’s terrible song and worse than terrible vocals. Yuck.
I doubt Adam Lambert will appear next year but add the American Music Awards to your parental control list now if you don’t want your family to see scantily-clad performers and possibly objectionable material. You’re welcome.
cool,
u r absolutley right, lol, people have no lives so they find stuff to complain about
I heard Adam’s explanation for the performance, he was talking about how women always push the envelope and I believe he gave Britney and Madonna kissing as an example.
People are saying that it was on cable so the kiss was ok. How does that excuse “it was on cable” work anymore when almost everyone has cable? Like do children not get cable?
I hope Adam Lambert never sells a thing. His performance was intentional and he could have cared less who would be watching. I certainly hope the music association never invites him to anything again. He is not remorseful. On television, we get the chance to monitor what we and our children see based on ratings, etc. and even though we were warned by the host of the awards show, we did not expect to see that behavior on prime time. More thank 1500 people were offended I can assure you.
So, Concerned Parent,
Is it okay with you if they show a heterosexual kiss on the boob tube?
You can’t have it both ways, bud.
The Music Industry: Where Shock & Awe turn into Shock and “Awww damn, why did you do that?”
I have never seen such blatant homophobia and descrimination on this board before. It’s just so sad. I wonder how many people just stumbled onto this site via a Google hit?
Can’t people just go back to fighting over whether New Moon: Revenge of the Gay Vampires affected VDs ratings?
Can I write VD here? Or is that offensive?
Cleveland Show? Nothing new. Family Guy once had Peter and his wife sleeping with Bill Clinton. Dogs having sex with humans. Babies (Stewie) dating women. Sex with a tranny for 30 years+ ? Nothing new there. Apprently you can get away with alot more as long as the characters are cartoon drawings.
RealisticExpectations, homosexuality is not normal and the vast majority of people are offended by it. Deal with it!
Homophobia is not the right word. Its more of matter of most people being repulsed by homosexual acts themselves. Its not a fear of it, people are just sickened by it – they think its just plain nasty. Sort of the way the Clevelands father threw up 10 gallons of puke after finding out he was sleeping with a tranny for a few decades and never figured out she was a man.
schmoker, a lot of people find it that way, which is a shame because normal commenters to TVBTN are pretty good about straying from such behavior, even if a subject brings some controversy.
I couldn’t care less about who did what at the AMAs. I didn’t even know they were on the air. However, there’s something to be said about an industry that still needs moments like this for a buzz, even if a man kissing another man on TV shouldn’t be such an issue.
schmoker says:
“The outrage over Glambert isn’t about the what. It’s about the who. A homo did it, so you are threatened by it, and made crazed from it. The outcry says a lot more about the criers than it does about any effect this will have on children.’
I see nobody has taken up the gedankenexperiment. I of course couldn’t care less about when Schmoker’s kids go to bed. What I *am* curious about is whether the reaction would polarize around Lambert, say, wearing Dr. Dentons and dropping a log of cookie dough out the rear flap and having that be the object of fetishistic attention, versus having the same log of cookie dough hanging out of his fly.
The latter is surely nothing new since Kenneth Anger’s “Fireworks”; it’s the various boundaries that are of interest. One can make prissy “a homo did it” arguments all the live-long day without ascertaining where lies “depravity,” which would seem to be the crux of the matter.
@julia
you said: “There’s only half a second where I can see any justifiable outrage.”
How many seconds of justifiable outrage does it take?
