FYI: President Obama Tentatively Scheduled for Prime-Time Speech on Afghanistan, Tuesday December 1

Posted on 24 November 2009 by Robert Seidman

The president is tentatively scheduled to address the nation about his Afghanistan plan in primetime next Tuesday, December 1.

Once a date is confirmed, we’ll post any scheduling impact/changes that result.  NBC is surely hoping the address will move to Monday or Wednesday  as Tuesdays has been one of its best nights with The Biggest Loser leading into The Jay Leno Show.  A new episode of The Biggest Loser is on tap for next Tuesday, as is a new So You Think You Can Dance on FOX.

CBS has reruns of  NCIS and NCIS: LA scheduled, followed by the Victoria Secret Fashion Show.

ABC has the classic  A Charlie Brown Christmas, a new Disney holiday special, two new episodes of Scrubs and a new episode of The Forgotten scheduled.

The CW, which typically doesn’t air presidential addresses nationally, has new episodes of 90120 and Melrose Place scheduled.

  1. rob says:

Hope he changes it to Wednesday. ABC is in repeats next Wednesday except Eastwick.

  2. Mark says:

NBC just announced they’re airing The Biggest Loser from 9-11 and pre-empting Jay Leno for the night. Not sure about the other networks.

  3. DenverDean says:

This surely sets the record for PT addresses by a POTUS in a calendar year. I’d rather read about it than sit through some canned Washington speak.

  4. Scott Jensen says:

What does this make for prime-time speeches by Obama? 42? I wonder if any other network will join Fox in not carrying it.

  5. rob says:

Was looking forward to the new disney holiday special. Oh well maybe ABC will air it Wednesday at 8. Charlie Brown is suppose to air both next Tuesday and December 8 so that wont matter.

  6. rob says:

Scott, if a network were to join FOX in not airing these press conferences, it would be ABC. He always schedules these press conferences at the worst time for ABC. ABC has been really promoting Prep and Landing. I hope ABC doesnt air this nonsense at all!

  7. The1337 says:

Does he need a press conference for every decision he makes or only those involving his poll numbers?

  8. Yamauchi says:

not interested in hearing Obama try to justify sending 35,000 troops to Afghan

  9. Bill Gorman says:

The Jay Leno Show, good for something. Easy pre-emption!

  10. josh says:

at least he his keeping his promise on this issue and trying to win this war…i’m actually going to watch this one

  11. Sam says:

Man I kinda wish McCain had one, he’d be in bed by 8.

  12. AppleStinx says:

“After long and careful deliberation … and with our allies’ approval … I have decided … that it is in the best interest of our nation … to deploy 35,000 more troops to Afghanistan.”

  13. Nightstar says:

    *clicks remote to another channel*
    *read transcript next day*

  14. M says:

Wow, that would be messed up for ABC

  15. karen says:

*eyerolls* ANOTHER speech in prime time? Oh well~ I’ll be watching FOX on Tuesday night anyway.

  16. Joe says:

I agree that President Obama has given too many press conferences/speeches in primetime. I believe he’s averaging at least one a month. I’m surprised he didn’t have one during the entire month of October, so I figured he was due for one.

CBS will obviously be the least impacted, just pre-empt a rerun. With that said, if Obama continues his current pace, I wouldn’t be surprised to see at least one other network follow Fox’s lead and say “no more” to Obama’s primetime speeches.

  17. Josh Emerson says:

I just hope it doesn’t affect the premiere of Scrubs.

  18. Devdog says:

Scrubs 2.0 was likely going to have a hard time catching on as it is, but if this speech runs into that timeslot at all, it will make it that much harder for Scrubs to gain any traction. I’m just glad this presser isn’t on the following Tuesday, where it might interfere with Better Off Ted.

  19. Jon says:

ABC could easily move the Christmas Specials to Wednesdays or drop an episode of Scrubs and have one of the two at 9pm with the other one, the next day.

Wonder if NCIS LA will be dropped and CBS airs NCIS at 9pm to give Victoria’s Secrets a better lead in.

  20. Joe says:

Devdog…Better Off Ted is in the same boat that Scrubs is in. In fact, the worse Scrubs does, the more likely it is that Ted will do bad as well. Neither series is setting the Nielsens on fire, and their fates are probably tied to one another, so Ted fans better hope that Scrubs succeeds.

  21. Devdog says:

Joe, I realize BOT is going to have a tough time as well. The fact that ABC is premiering it in December is a pretty good indicator of what they expect. I was simply pointing out that I’m glad the Obama speech isn’t scheduled to interfere with the season premiere of BOT, since I’m looking forward to that much more than I am to Scrubs.

  22. Cody says:

All hail TOTUS Teleprompter of The United States. Couldn’t he at least schedule at 7:00 that might help networks primetime.

Oh and give Mccrystal his troops and move on already this is simply emboldonig our enenimies

  23. josh says:

I’ve been reading it might take 2 years to get where our General and President want to be in this war.

  24. AppleStinx says:

Hopefully the teleprompter will be in working order. If it quits midway, Obama could end up sending the wrong number of troops and to a different country.

  25. Mikey says:

The Nobel Peace Prize winner is going to announce an additional 35,000 troops for an endless war. Think I’ll be skipping that one.

  26. Brock Samson says:

Obama speeches should be on Pay per View

  27. DenverDean says:

Thank goodness for the Telepromters. Otherwise, the speeches would be twice as long with all the “um’s” and “ah’s”. The good news is that we’ll get another shot the following week with Ocra. Too bad only one network is covering it.

  28. AppleStinx says:

Obama, when speaking unrehearsed, can be a pain to listen to.
Robert Gibbs is the worst of them all.

  29. Joseph says:

“Hopefully the teleprompter will be in working order. If it quits midway, Obama could end up sending the wrong number of troops and to a different country.”

So that’s what happened to the last president?

  30. AppleStinx says:

AppleStinx wrote: “Hopefully the teleprompter will be in working order. If it quits midway, Obama could end up sending the wrong number of troops and to a different country.”

Joseph replied: “So that’s what happened to the last president?”

Of course not. “Teleprompter dependency” is an Obama phenomenon. While Obama can be a far more eloquent speaker when rehearsed and reading from a teleprompter, there is NO denying Dubbya was a more fluent unscripted speaker. As for “last president”, his name might as well be Bill Clinton, since everything is still ‘Bush this’, ‘Bush that’. Obama continues to operate in campaign mode.

  31. Kyle says:

Theres never anything good on Tuesday nights then the one tuesday where theres something good schedule they have to have a speech!! OF COURSE!!!

  32. rob says:

I dont think ABC will be showing this speech as they are still promoting Charlie Brown Christmas and Prep & Landing for Tuesday at 8.

  33. rob says:

Oh and so u people know, FOX will be showing this speech. SYTYCD will air 9-11.

  34. karen says:

rob says: “Oh and so u people know, FOX will be showing this speech. SYTYCD will air 9-11.”

Where did you hear this? As far as I can tell, FOX programming airs only until 10PM before switching over to local news. Also, according to the website, FOX is planning to air SYTYCD from 8-10PM.

  35. rob says:

Karen, my cable box changed. It shows that SYTYCD will air 9-11 and news will air at 11. I was surprised too. ABC and CBS have made no changes. NBC moved Biggest Loser to 9.

  36. FOX’s PR site schedule indicates that SYTYCD will air in its entirety after the presidential address in the eastern and central time zones (and air at normal times in Pacific and Mountain TZ)

    http://foxflash.com/div.php/main/page?aID=1z4&mo=12&d=1

  37. BTW, it appears the address is only scheduled for 30 min. CBS will air NCIS (r) from 8:30-9:30p, a Two and a Half Men (r) from 9:30-10p and Victoria Secret Fashion Show at 10pm, so all that is bumped is the originally scheduled repeat of NCIS: LA. NBC as noted will bump Jay Leno.

Not clear on what ABC will do yet. If it’s really only a 30 minute address I imagine they will stick w/Disney Prep & Landing at 8:30/7:30 central

  38. rob says:

ABC may still not want to air it. They rather premiere Prep & Landing after Charlie Brown Christmas because it would get way better retention out of that than a presidential speech.

While watching Charlie Brown last night, ABC was promoting Charlie Brown Christmas and Prep & Landing a lot for Tuesday. Saw about 3 or 4 promos for them.

  39. Nayrbnevets says:

Thank God! Obama, our true savior, the real reason for the season will spare our innocent children from the Politically incorrect, Christian-laced Charlie Brown Christmas. Our children would be much better served with further indoctrination into the TOTUS collective. Obama Bless America!
