Schedule impacts for President Obama’s primetime address on Tuesday

Posted on 27 November 2009 by Robert Seidman

obama-press-conference

President Obama plans to address the nation Tuesday, December 1 at 8pm eastern about his plans with Afghanistan and all four major broadcast networks plan to air the address.

The address is only scheduled for 30 minutes, though some networks (ABC & NBC) look to give it one hour of coverage.  Overall with the exception of ABC, which pushed its Disney Prep & Landing special to the following Tuesday, the impacts were fairly minimal:

ABC: moves 30 minute version of A Charlie Brown Christmas and  Disney Prep & Landing to December 8, replacing a one hour version of A Charlie Brown Christmas previously scheduled.   The 9pm-11pm portion of the schedule is unchanged.

FOX: will air the address and then the regular 2 hour So You Think You Can Dance

CBS: will air a repeat of NCIS at 8:30pm, followed by a repeat of Two & A Half Men at 9:30 and the Victoria Secret Fashion Show at 10pm (a repeat of NCIS: LA gets bumped).

NBC: Will air the regular  2 hour version of  The Biggest Loser from 9pm-11pm bumping The Jay Leno Show off the schedule.

  2. RJ says:

Last night NBC had 5.04 million viewers. :D

  3. RJ says:

    ^at 10pm^

  4. Samuel says:

Oh, now what’s Obama gonna say against Fox?

  5. Christopher says:

    looks like dvd night

  6. Yamauchi says:

this is bad for Obama so of course FOX will show this address

  7. highest 90210 ratings ever

  8. mattttttttt says:

Why do these networks do this? We don’t need the big 3 airing the same thing. Why can’t they just air their progamming, especially if it’s new? Are they afraid no one will watch because Obama is speaking? Pshhh, i’ll watch anything other than the speech. haha.

  9. R.J Sheedy says:

Man…. Two And A Half Men Is Airing At 9:30… That Means I Have To Miss It because Of The Premire Of Scrubs…. Damn!!!

  10. Matt says:

NBC is bumping Jay off the schedule that night? What a surprise…

  11. Moxy says:

I’m just thrilled that Jay’s being bumped. Think Obama will attract more than 4 million viewers? ;)

  12. Christopher says:

o yeah 90210 i forgot it was new

  13. Trent says:

Glad to see the premiere of Scubs isn’t gonna be affected.

  14. Trent says:

    ^”Scrubs”^

  15. bruce says:

I won’t be watching Obama. Sounds like a cable night.

  16. rob says:

Just saw the promo for Prep & Landing and realized ABC changed the date to December 8. Maybe 90210 can benefit from this.

  17. josh says:

49 – 44 Approval Rating: Needs to hit a homerun or his agenda and congress will turn next year

  18. InsulinJunkie says:

    Josh -
There aren’t enough seats up in the midterms for that to really happen.

The GOP will most likely gain seats, but when one party controls both the White House and Congress, that usually happens anyways the next election.

Just like the backup quarterback is often the most popular player on a pro football team when things aren’t going particularly well (even if he’s the failed starter), the party not-in-power usually becomes the most popular with American voters (since to continue the tortured football analogies, most Americans consider the two parties the equivalents of, say, Alex Smith and Jake Delhomme [or insert other crappy QBs here]) :P

  19. William Hughes says:

DVDs for me as usual. as for Obama and Congress, by this time next year we will be referring to the Elections held the previous month as “The Second American Revolution”! :D

  20. Prup (aka Jim Benton) says:

I usually save political comments for a more appropriate venue, but the Democrats have as much chance of losing seats in 2010 as Flash In The Pan Forward has of getting another season. They are already attacking some of their most Conservative members (Inglis, Graham, even McCain, for not being crazy enough, and the few people they have that could bring them back to sanity, like Mike Castle in Delaware, are being sabotaged. (Others who had previously being moderate are running for the asylum so fast they are leaving vapor trails, like Boehner, Cantor, and Pawlenty.) In recent days O’Reilly and Coulter have been representing ‘moderate’ Republicans.

So, until they abandon the Becks and Her Excellency the Baroness Munchhausen, ex-Governor of Alaska, and stop taking marcing orders from the WorldNutDaily, we Democrats don’t have a thing to worry about.

  21. Prup (aka Jim Benton) says:

A few typos there. “They” refers to Republicans, of course, there’s a missing parenthesis, and the only typo in the last line is ‘marcing’ for ‘marching’.

  22. Scott Jensen says:

I wonder why Fox is now hearing this speech when it didn’t previous ones.

  23. InsulinJunkie says:

    >> the Democrats have as much chance of losing seats in 2010 as Flash In The Pan Forward has of getting another season.

I believe you’re really underestimating the fickleness of the general American voting population, particularly the non-affiliated voter.

Looking at the polling data, Flash Forward’s numbers are better relative to the competition’s. :P

Again, I’m of the view that 2010 will likely see a few seats swing back, but not a great amount – the seats up in 2010 don’t lend themselves to a ‘94-style bloodbath.

Things like delivering on those promised tax cuts (which few Americans now believe will occur) instead of likely raising taxes would certainly help, and passing an unpopular version of health care reform wouldn’t help. More American voters pay attention to things like that than what talking head is saying what on TV/talk radio, or intra-party jostling.

Unless things change dramatically in a year’s time (and they certainly could), someone is going to pay, and it’s not going to be the party currently not in charge of anything.

  24. Mumbo says:

“I wonder why Fox is now hearing this speech when it didn’t previous ones.”

Because SYTYCD puts up weak numbers, and this will definitely outperform it. So now they use it as a strong lead-in for Dance instead, boosting the numbers for the whole night. It’s wise programming on their part.

    Besides, Fox =/= Fox News.

  25. Prup (aka Jim Benton) says:

If the Republicans resembled the Republicans of even a few years ago, I’d agree with you, but right now they are fighting each other, telling so many ‘death panel’ type lies, and paying attention to people who — this happened just last week — actually mocked people who explained how they’d suffered for lack of health insurance. (The audience claimed ‘Oh, Obama sends them around to every meeting just to gain sympathy.’ THAT is the level of madness out there.)

Again, if the Republicans were running ‘generic candidates’ they might cause a swing, but they aren’t, and any Democrat with brains — and a few of us have them — can put almost any Republican out there in a position of choosing to alienate that base, or everybody else.

And yes, the health care bill may wind up being unpopular — but more because it is too weak than because it offends the Tea Party crowd, who are much noisier than their numbers. The public, every poll shows, wants a strong public option, and no Stupak Amendment.

  26. yoshue says:

Good. I wish these things would only be on Tuesdays, when there is not a single show on broadcast television worth watching.

  27. daniel patrick says:

so NBC doesn’t get hurt at all? but the addresses always air at 5 in tucson so they’ll have repeats the office or something fun like that on at 7

  28. Roland says:

And I thought I’d have to miss a new episode of “V” this week…..

  29. Prup (aka Jim Benton) says:

Tuesday has nothing worth watching? NCIS isn’t worth watching? There’s no accounting for taste, but I’d still argue it is not just the best show on now, but could make a case that it is the best series I’ve watched in my over 55 years of tv watching, certainly among the top 10.

  30. Tommy says:

I’m surprised FOX is airing it. Maybe think think war is important enough to cover, but the economy isn’t.

  31. elaine says:

Prup, keep a copy of your comment, so you can eat it this time next year.LOL
I had rather watch paint dry that listen to obama one more time.

  32. Rosie says:

def a NetFlix night for us.
I cannot listen to BHO. He is evil

  33. Oh, Hi Mark says:

No matter how much you love Obama and his rousing oratory you will never be able to come close to the incredible love he has for himself.

Has any POTUS ever been on television as much as this narcissist?

    Personality disorder.

  34. Rosie says:

The guy makes me physically ill

  35. AniMatsuri says:

One reason Fox is willing to air the Obama show this time around is its not the 1hr+ marathon the preivous versions were. I think I’m not the only one who gets bored of overly long Presidential speaches.

  36. Cody says:

Could you guys Pray for me I have Broadcast TV only :(

  37. ljo says:

    @Cody

My advice is to find yourself a good book. ;)

  38. Len Davis says:

Perhaps there will be actual CONTENT in this speech as opposed to the PR-driven informercials that have constituted most of his primetime “events”.

  39. Ted says:

I find it so funny that so many conservatives are so into TV shows, you’d think with all the hatred of Hollywood they’d not be watching any of this stuff any way.

As for Obama he needs to find that bunker Cheney was in for 8 years and stay a while.

  40. b. says:

how come the cw wont air Obama ??

  41. Darold Boucher says:

The only time I watch the Messiah is when he announces he’s resigning.

  42. Allen says:

    @Roland

I was thinking that too for a second. But then I remembered, V is off the air until March. :/

  43. Johnny says:

All you Rush Limbaugh hand puppets are posting on the wrong site. This site is about tv numbers, not your bizarro, ultra-conservative, media driven delusional ideals. This is not the venue.

  44. R.G. says:

how come the cw wont air Obama ??

They don’t want 14 year old girls to know who obama is.

  45. R.G. says:

“I find it so funny that so many conservatives are so into TV shows, you’d think with all the hatred of Hollywood they’d not be watching any of this stuff any way.”

I feel the same way when I read that. I know many Republicans who don’t own TV’s, and try to stay away from mainstream media as much as possible.

  46. Ryan says:

Oh lordy looks like some liberals commented on their communist care bill in this thing. I may watch to see how that socialist creep tries to justify sending more troops.

  47. bruce says:

Conservatives and independants (the vast majority) are on ALL sites these days AND expressing their views. The silent majority is silent no more. We also watch cable news channels and stay informed, which is why we like TVbytheNumbers.

  48. Jon says:

Like someone said, we don’t need all these networks showing that speech crap. In fact, I would think CBS would rather show NCIS/NCIS: LA because I’m sure it would bring alot higher ratings than a speech being aired by like 10 stations would.

  49. David D says:

I really didn’t like Bush interrupted daytime soap, and my local stations just skipped the day, not rescheduled them. Tv stations did reschedule shows when Obama made his speeches, so viewers didn’t miss them.
To Obama haters, did you hate Bush interrupt your programs? I dislike both did it. But, if you only hated one, not the other, you have double standards.

  50. rob says:

David, Obama does it way too often. He interrupts primetime and daytime! I dont remember Bush doing soo many press conferences.

  51. Dee says:

The media whore could have just done his usual daily press conference during the day, but being the egotist that he is he has to interupt prime time schedule for something he should have done when asked for these troops in August.

  52. Nightstar says:

I generally skip all speeches and press conferences by presidents, regardless of party affiliation. I read the transcripts later when they become available. Mainly, I don’t care for the puffed-haired, egotistical talking heads (anchors and “expert analysts”) who “interpret” what the president is saying. I’ll make my own interpretations, thank you very much.

  53. Nikky says:

No matter affiliation, I don’t see why it’s so bad that Obama wishes to keep the public informed of major issues that affect us all. Sure, it’s no fun to have our precious programming interrupted, but it’s good to be able to hear “the plans” straight from the horses mouth – instead of the weeks of spin that typically follow any statement, and especially the lack of communication. Perhaps Bush would have been better off (and less misunderstood) if he spoke to the public more during his time.

I understand the dislike, but it’s better to be able to interpret actual information rather than dissecting spin created from a lack of information.

  54. David D says:

Maybe it was my local stations. When Bush was president, they showed his speech too often in the daytime; I don’t want to say whenever Bush had a speech, but it was way too many times.
It is clear now, they are obviously pro-Bush, I don’t see many Obama now. Oh, well, I just want them to stick with their tv schedule, no matter which president they like. At least, let people prepare for it – yeah, even it was only lousy daytime soap.

  55. AngGirl says:

I am so ticked off that Obama is ruining my Tuesday night line up. Now I have to choose between Dance and ECW.

BTW, I am mad at anyone that ruins or interrupts my television schedule. Even if it is the cute weatherman during Days.

  56. STFU says:

This site is about tv numbers, not your bizarro, ultra-conservative, media driven delusional ideals. This is not the venue.”

Are you out of your mind? I mean seriously? “Media-driven delusional ideas?” The media is so overwhelmingly liberal your statement doesn’t even make sense. Besides that, there were as many posts from liberals as conservatives. Another thing, you are right this site is supposed to be about tv numbers, not political debates. The only problem is in your saying that you took a political stance. That is the pot calling the kettle black, Johnny.

  57. matt stechel says:

tuesday night tv suuucks this season anyways if you’re not a fan of reality. I like NCIS just fine–don’t get me wrong—but did it have to be the ONLY THING on Tueday nights that wasn’t reality???

This was the real reason why V premiered to bigger then expected numbers last month. I can only hope that this lack of alternatives helps Better Off Ted when that comes back next week.

  58. Tumbleweeds says:

insulin, you’re right about the Senate, there aren’t enough seats up for the Republicans to gain control but the House is a different story. Every single seat is up. Remember 1994? 2010 looks quite similar. While the Republicans may not take over the House they’ll gain enough seats to make it more difficult to pass the democrats socialist agenda. Let’s hope we can retain some liberty and freedom

  59. Winston Smith (TruthMin) says:

Why doesnt Comrade ObaMao make his speeches at 7pm? Since V is on hiatus theres nothing I watch on Tuesdays anyway, but still, why not air these things at 7pm?

Pre-empting “A Charlie Brown Christmas”??? I mean really! Would he do that if it were “A Charlie Brown Jihad”? You know, the one where Linus, Pig Pen and Schroeder are beheaded for being unclean infidels and Lucy and Peppermint Patty become Charlies wives and put into Burkas?

  60. Johnny says:

    @STFU

I took no political stance in my statement. I simply pointed out this is not the place for all the Obama hate speech that has become so popular these days. I don’t have an opinion on the president yet. He’s been in office less than a year. He faces the biggest mess any president has faced since Lincoln so I thought I’d give him a chance before I jump on the bandwagon and start bashing him.

  61. STFU says:

Yes you did. When you called conservative ideology delusional, you took a stance.

  62. Mark D. says:

Glad to hear Scrubs wont be affected. It may even get a boost…

  63. Kat says:

The last thing I want to do is watch the president that is bound to plop the most taxes on the WORKING middle class population not the rich folk or the poor folk by the end of his run. I will be so glad when that dumb hypocrite is out of office. As for the health care bill, I’m sorry but I can barely afford to support myself let alone the world. QUIT TAXING EVERYONE.

  64. Johnny says:

    @STFU

I didn’t call conservative ideology delusional.
My post referred to the people who make a living stirring up all this hate speak for their own personal agenda and especially the folks who sheepishly follow along. I believe I even mentioned the biggest offender by name. I agree with some of the fundamentals of conservative ideology, the ones that make sense. It’s the people who are taking it to bizarre extremes I disagree with. This whole red state/blue state thing is tearing us apart as a nation. We must be either/or, conservative or liberal, if not then we are considered completely irrelevant. Pick a side or we’ll totally ignore you. There’s no place for common sense in the equation or individuality.

  65. Boris says:

    William Hughes says:

“as for Obama and Congress, by this time next year we will be referring to the Elections held the previous month as ‘The Second American Revolution’!”

If only Jay North hadn’t joined the LDS, he might have a shot at the Oval Office.

  66. forg says:

I hope Scrubs gets a boost, maybe pull 6 million viewers and above 2.0 at least

  67. Robert says:

What this CW-hating website has failed to mention is that while the presidential address is on all four major networks interrupting regularly scheduled programming, CW will be airing brand new episodes of 90210 and Melrose Place.

  68. Sue says:

Who, with any brains watches Fox on regular TV….those of use who have ‘em watch cable. I don’t watch trash!

  69. X-R.G. says:

    A week-night with out Leno…smart move NBC

  70. Tommy says:

I can’t believe all of the Obama bashing. Hate him all you want. It doesn’t matter. This is about American families and soldiers who will lose their lives and loved ones while maybe finally get something done where we should have been 8 years instead of Iraq.

But, keep crying about some TV shows that might mess up your popcorn night.

You are an idiot. Your party has been wanting to go gun blazing with 40,000+ troops, while Obama is getting bashed by his own party. Actually, anyone calling someone a Communist in one sentence and a Socialist in the next is a bona-fide idiot.
