With CBS mostly in repeats, NBC ruled the night for a change with Dateline (focusing on Tiger Woods) the night’s most-watched program on the broadcast networks.  Law & Order was also strong and  The Jay Leno Show’s ratings were up versus a typical Friday, it was still not enough to lead it past ABC’s 20/20.

Ahead of the move to Wednesdays at 10pm, Ugly Betty rose again with adults 18-49, from last week’s 1.2 to a 1.4 rating and 4.8 million viewers overall, it’s best on Friday since the season premiere.

Dollhouse was up a bit over last week, particularly in the 8pm hour where it pulled a 1.0 rating with adults 18-49 (versus last week’s .8 rating for the 8pm episode).  But how you gonna  lie to me and be all up in my face about a treatment, I don’t have time for no nerd convention.  Did I fall asleep?    Or something like that.  Anyway, for the 9pm hour it was back down to a .8 rating with adults 18-49, but for the two hour block it averaged over 2.4 million viewers and a .9 with adults 18-49.  Last week for the two hour block it averaged 2.05 million viewers and a .8 with adults 18-49.

Definitions:
Fast Affiliate Ratings: These first national ratings, including demographics, are available at approximately 11 AM (ET) the day after telecast, and are released to subscribing customers daily. These data, from the National People Meter sample, are strictly time-period information, based on the normal broadcast network feed, and include all programming on the affiliated stations, sometimes including network programming, sometimes not. The figures may include stations that did not air the entire network feed, as well as local news breaks or cutaways for local coverage or other programming. Fast Affiliate ratings are not as useful for live programs and are likely to differ significantly from the final results, because the data reflect normal broadcast feed patterns. For example, with a World Series game, Fast Affiliate Ratings would include whatever aired from 8-11PM on affiliates in the Pacific Time Zone, following the live football game, but not game coverage that begins at 5PM PT. The same would be true of Presidential debates as well as live award shows and breaking news reports.

Rating: Estimated percentage of the universe of TV households (or other specified group) tuned to a program in the average minute. Ratings are expressed as a percent.

Share (of Audience): The percent of households (or persons) using television who are tuned to a specific program, station or network in a specific area at a specific time. (See also, Rating, which represents tuning or viewing as a percent of the entire population being measured.)

Time Shifted Viewing – Program ratings for national sources are produced in three streams of data – Live, Live+Same Day (Live+SD) and Live+7 Day. Time shifted figures account for incremental viewing that takes place with DVRs which are currently in approximately 24.4% of all U.S. TV households. Live+Same Day (Live+SD) include viewing during the same broadcast day as the original telecast, with a cut-off of 3:00AM local time when meters transmit daily viewing to Nielsen for processing. Live+7 Day ratings include incremental viewing that takes place during the 7 days following a telecast.

Oh, my goodness! Yes, Ugly Betty’s ratings were up again. Hallelujah! Last week a 4.23 now it went up to 4.8! That’s a good improvement! I guess people really did want to know who was pregnant!

Total viewers do not really matter, except apparently to most of the people who read our site :-) But the demo gains are good, too, now up 75% since its “Black Friday” lows a few weeks ago. Still a dead show walking barring a miracle on Wednesday or ABC wanting more episodes for syndication regardless of the ratings.

How did Law & Order fair last evening? What an excellent episode. Great to see Benjamin Bratt. Merkerson is outstanding with her story arc this season. So hopeful that the character survives and she’s back for season 21 *LOL*

Also, I read somewhere that NBC has ordered a full season of L&O (22 episodes – beyond the additional four that was announced a few weeks back). Does anyone know?

Holly, I saw no local preemptions that were a.) major or b.) would’ve impacted FOX at all. In Des Moines they got college b-ball instead of Ugly Betty.

Good to see Law & Order up. hope to see it for a 21st season. hopefully they will go higher and not have to do these awful story archs where Van Buren has cancer. And no more of those stupid sexy episodes with cutter and the mexican ADA. It has been a very uneven season and I know much of that (or I at least speculate) that is because they’re trying to survive for another season. Hopefully we won’t see a repeat next year because some of the episodes this season have been garbage. Maybe they’ll be put on a better time slot.

Can affiliates just decide on their own to pre-empt a network show like UB and do they have to run it at another time? Didn’t NBC threaten their Boston affiliate with dropping them altogether if they didn’t carry Jay Leno?

I am glad the ratings are up, not like it matters anyways due to its cancellation.

“Ugly Betty” was pretty good last night- would be nice to see it get 6.5m-7m viewers on Wednesdays. Not that it matters much, as this likely is its final season.

I don’t really watch UGLY BETTY but I always hope that it does well in the ratings, I think that once it moves to Wednesdays, it will gain even more viewers and become the hit it once was for ABC. Why did they even move it to fridays???..

Good God. Popping the champagne cork for a 1.4 and 4+ mill viewers on UB is an embarrassment for any show costing what it does. It’s really limping along to the syndication finish line.

    Above and Below,

Ugly Betty isn’t as expensive as you may think since they cut the shows budget starting in season three due to moving to New York. Also, seeing as the show attracted as many viewers and in some instances as a show that aired during an attractive night (outside of Friday/Saturday) on the dreadful Friday, there is cause for happiness. The show is not doing that bad in comparison to what it was doing in Spring 2009, especially since it is now on Friday’s.

While no one is expecting a miracle on Wednesdays, she is at least showing a move is warranted. Serialized programs do not belong on Fridays. There is a reason Ghost Whisperer, Medium, Numb3rs and Law & Order along with Dateline and 20/20 do so well on the night, even if slightly down.

The 8 pm ‘Dollhouse’ tied its season high in A18-49 (1.0) and established a season high in P2+ viewers (2,720,000).

The reason for the significant ‘Dollhouse’ for the 9 pm episode might be due to a audio/sound problem on the west coast feed (9:05:05 to 9:07:28pm) that occurred early in the hour and led to a “please stand by” for a few minutes. It happened during a critical moment of the episode, and I’m going to try and find the episode online so I can see what was said. I’m not sure whether this problem also occurred during the east/midwest feeds too.

Nice to see ‘Ugly Betty’ departing Friday nights tying its season high in A18-49. With a bit of promo and a sweet ‘Cougar Town’ lead-in, it might just surprise us all with a nice mid 2′s in demo on Wednesday nights at 10:01 pm.

The biggest surprise of the night for me was how poorly the brand new ‘Yes Virginia’ toon did for CBS at 8:00 pm, especially given that holiday specials have been doing well this season.

The sound during Dollhouse dropped out a few times during both eps last night here on the east coast. The worst was about 2 minutes long (and it happened in one of the Alpha scenes, which sucked).

I also experienced the problem with Dollhouse 9pm episode though without the “please stand by”. Initially I chalked it up to my DVR until I realize my DVR wasn’t locked up, it was just recording a frozen image with clicking sounds. As it was restored it went back and forth between HD and SD, so I wondered if it was only a problem w/the HD feed.

    David,

Law & Order was recently filming at my job location, and while I don’t care for the current cast, it isn’t a pointless and stupid show. It is a show that delves into real cases and fictionalizes them. They educate people in how the judicial system works even if it plays against you. Mind you, I have not in the past nor currently watch the show consistently. In fact, I haven’t watched an episode since the early 2000′s. Also, with the ratings it got last night, NBC would be stupid to cancel it, record or no record. It did better last night at 8pm (which it should not be airing in, but whatever) than an episode of Mercy this past Wednesday. Mercy got a 1.9 vs L&O’s 1.7 in Adults 18-49, which is only a .2 difference. If L&O was airing on Wednesday, I’d wager it would get equal to or higher than a 2.3. Also, L&O only airs at 8, so if CBS loses from 9-11 (which it hasn’t) during originals than that isn’t NBC’s fault. It is CBS’ for airing programs people don’t wanna watch.

I don’t think it was just the HD feed since I watched in SD. A lot of reviews mentioned the problem as well. I just thought it was my TV because of the horrid winds we’ve been having all week.

Even with the great lead-in from Dateline-Tiger Woods, Leno Show only got a 1.5. Pathetic.

It would be a thoughtful gesture on FOX’s part if they could include some of the 2m23s of missing footage as part of next week’s “Previously on Dollhouse” opening segment. Otherwise, we’ll all be forced to buy the DVD to see the reveals in the missing footage.

Without the audio/sound problems, ‘Dollhouse’ at 9 pm might have shattered the season high numbers posted by the 8 pm episode.

I guess NBC had a huge Friday at the expense of Tiger Woods and more importantly his family. Remember he has two kids.

“Yes, Virginia” was cute but way too light on story and I was surprised that Big Bang was on after it. I thought from the ads CBS had been running all week that Virginia was an hour long. I was surprised to find out a Big Bang repeat was actually on in the second half hour. Maybe more people would have watched if they had known. What an odd pairing.

Shows that the people who diss Ghost Whisperer and think CBS should dump it don’t realize that that show is really the anchor for its Friday night lineup.

I had never watched Medium before and had always thought the show was very peculiar. Well, it is peculiar, but more interesting than I thought.

Too bad Dateline couldn’t have woven Michael Jackson in as well then the ratings would have been really high.

I tried to tell people after upfronts that Law & Order on Fridays was going to change the game as I knew NBC would end up effecting CBS Fridays big time and it has happened as they’ve had their first big Friday of the season.

ABC and FOX are dead on Fridays except 20/20.

BlueLick – Well it seems both FOX and ABC have given fridays to reality/competition series and repeats. ABC has Shark Tank, Supernanny, 20/20 (and soon Wife Swap), while FOX has House/Bones repeats and Kitchen Nightmares beginning January. If anything, numbers should be around the same but since these shows are all considerably cheaper, it wont seem so bad. Maybe if Life to Me airs fridays at 8 with Kitchen Nightmares and it does even a bit better than the recent Dollhouse airings, it will be good for FOX.

I think the CW should take Dollhouse, 2.7 million viewer would place it as the third best show on the channel I think Fox was good to the fans by showing the rest of the episodes! But still I think it would be a good show to air behind Smallville since they have nothing for the nine a clock timeslot so they should take it to consideration Dollhouse is a good show! Plus idoubt they would have too pay alot of money to air it.

Julio, The CW won’t be picking up Dollhouse for a few reasons:

    1) they have said that they don’t want to pickup other networks castoffs.
    2) it’s produced by FOX, and most if not all of The CW’s shows are WB and CBS produced
    3) Dollhouse would likely get much lower ratings on The CW than it currently gets on FOX
    4) Dollhouse doesn’t fit their target demo of women 18-34

Tommy, 2) Every scripted show currently on the CW is produced by CBS or WB. America’s Next Top Model is the only show that was on this fall that isn’t.

I’d be fairly surprised if that changed, since the conventional wisdom is that the only financial upside for CBS & WB in the CW is that it creates value for the shows they each produce.

That was an outstanding episode of Law & Order last night… courageous enough to actually get out of “procedural” mode for a second and present a storyline related to a character’s personal life, one that tackled a real-life but downbeat theme (battling cancer)… If anyone thinks that was “pointless and stupid,” well, buddy, you just ain’t payin’ attention. Hope you live long enough to get the point.

If FOX wanted to curry favour with Mr. Whedon (and assure they win the rights to his next series), they could try to negotiate some shared production arrangement that would allow ‘Dollhouse’ to move to The CW in exchange for CBS-WB picking up some ownership of the show (say, half of the future incremental DVD/international licencing fees).

I think ‘Dollhouse’ would be a good lead-out for ‘Smallville’ on Friday nights.

Just wanted to mention that the sound in both Dollhouse episodes dropped out in the central timezone (Houston, TX) also. We didn’t get the “please stand by” message, but the 2nd episode did fade to black for about 30 seconds before it faded back in.

Adam – we got the same thing here in Florida (and several sound problems of the “bouncing football” type), thought it was a localized problem…

I liked the first episode of Dollhouse last night, didn’t enjoy the second (despite it being the kind of thing that others seem to like in a way I don’t.) Not sure if the ratings suggest people agreed with me, or whether they all didn’t like the first episode and promptly didn’t bother with the second. I’m surprised the ratings grew, I didn’t think the beginning of the first really formed much of an introduction for new viewers, so I suppose people must have told their friends about the stunning episodes last week and that might have explained the growth.

Not sure if the ratings suggest people agreed with me, or whether they all didn’t like the first episode and promptly didn’t bother with the second. I’m surprised the ratings grew, I didn’t think the beginning of the first really formed much of an introduction for new viewers, so I suppose people must have told their friends about the stunning episodes last week and that might have explained the growth.

I had a lot of audio/video problems during both episodes here in Utah as well. It was incredibly annoying.

Midwest had issues during Dollhouse as well.

So the copy at Fox HQ they sent to all their affiliates must have been bad? I haven’t seen that level of egregious failure on a broadcaster’s part since CBS aired portions of an episode of Robbery Homicide Division out of order a decade ago.

    @ Errol

Actually I do know the cost of the show with the in house production costs and the NY incentive factored in, it’s still tipping against UB. ABC is basically sucking it up and just trying to keep it’s tattered viewership intact until the big finale. With a repeat against it this was just a classic dead cat bounce.

    Dumont says:

“If FOX wanted to curry favour with Mr. Whedon (and assure they win the rights to his next series), they could try to negotiate some shared production arrangement that would allow ‘Dollhouse’ to move to The CW in exchange for CBS-WB picking up some ownership of the show (say, half of the future incremental DVD/international licencing fees).

I think ‘Dollhouse’ would be a good lead-out for ‘Smallville’ on Friday nights.”

LOL. Biggest laugh I had all day. Please say this is a joke post a la “Joss’ Biggest Fan.”

Dollhouse on The CW would fail more than an overly botoxed Heather Locklear. It’s just not a concept that 98% of the TV audience cares for. Time to move on. Everyone else has.

Drat – is there anyone who knows when NBC will repeat the original L&O on Saturdays? I had a JoBetty bug in my TV last evening…

…and Jo is getting a bit boring, but Betty was worth the hour I otherwise would have spent channeling Pisher as the homicide victim or perp on a forthcoming Castle…

    …which one, I haven’t decided ;)

It is a shame Dollhouse did not start on a cable channel, because the last few episodes have been really good and if on cable the viewer numbers would look much better. Probably still too low, but beating Stargate Universe now and I bet it is much cheaper to produce. If the entire series had been more about the espionage plots and less about sexual slavery the bad press and female backlash might have also helped ratings as well.

The Dollhouse technology like the Stargate has so many avenues to get stories both series should have really been able to do much better than the very limited few ideas used so far. I mean really a person could be instantly trained to do anything using the Dollhouse programing and using the Stargate any universe imagined could be visited making story telling unlimited in both cases, yet both shows are or have died on the vine so to speak.

    Flaws regarding Smallville:

They were two separate episodes, and the first ep averaged 1.5 million, second one 2.2 million. Even if you average it out, its more than the 1.36 million viewers you wrongly put in the article.

Dillan, I got my data today from Marc Berman, and that’s what he posted. At the time I posted this, Zap2it hadn’t reported their results yet. I don’t know who is right and who is wrong, and won’t for sure until Monday, but given past experience my guess is Zap2its numbers are correct.

But don’t worry, it’s a freaking repeat. Dawn Ostroff won’t cancel the show if we reported the numbers wrong and it’s not like we spit on your mother.

Wahoo! Thanks for ‘unofficial’ confidence in zap2it’s ratings for Smallville repeats. WOW 2.2m for a repeat of Smallville is fantastic.

That, coupled with amazing season + positive overall Smallville coverage (Especially this site) + SV movie event + the new sets CW/Smallville just purchased + failure of Melrose/TBL (AKA Dawn’s strategy) make season 10 incredibly solid looking.

My Tivo didn’t record Dollhouse last night, (Chatt, TN) but HULU had it up this morning…Wow, the show finaly figured out how it should work, with ECHO now having some control over her diffrent personas, but still trying to figure it ot at the same time, this should of been the start of Season#2, this way Fox could of advertised it and we could watch this show grow, granted last weeks episodes weren’t bad either, but knowing dollhouse next week it will slip back into the confussing mess it has been for most of the shows life…

I think TVByTheNumbers’ overall numbers might actually be right, that SV only had 1.2 million for the second hour, with the 1.36 million averaged 1.5 for the first hour and 1.2 for the second. Darn. I wanted to gloat about a repeat beating Dollhouse ;-)

    Especially since Zap2It said The CW averaged 1.4 for the night… 1.5 plus 2.2 don’t make 1.4.

Too bad. I was getting excited.

I am so angry. I live in Vancouver BC and we get the Seattle feed for ABC and they did air that stupid Adam Sandler movie instead of Ugly Betty.

    Anyone know why?

Will we ever see that episode?

I want Dollhouse to fail (still mad over TSCC).

However, it has gotten better since the return.

While your guess sort of make sense, the only thing I would argue is that numbers seem to go up from 1.0/2 to 1.3/2 from 8 -> 9. If the show lost 300k viewers you figure that number would have went down.

Hopefully Zap2it is right, it would be pretty cool if a SV repeat broke 2M, although it might give Dawn the idea to move it to Friday’s at 9 in the future…lol

Dateline’s 2.0 lead-in, from which Leno got 75% retention? Not pathetic.
Bones to Fringe 3.1 to 2.3 lost a quarter. Office to 30 Rock did too. & CSI Miami lost about a third of its lead-in.

Don’t count your chickens before they’re hatched. All the folks at Medium thought the same thing last season. I was actually told by several members of the crew a month before the upfronts that the show would be back. And then NBC pulled the rug out from under them. Thank goodness CBS had the good sense to pick it up. Don’t trust NBC one iota.

Awesome promo-ing for UB after the show friday night, Moving it to “Comedy Wednesday” on ABC might do the trick because after all UB is a comedy series, it doesnt sit well on fridays alongside the ghostly encounters and crime and law shows that folks watch on fridays.

Thanks Tommy I understand Now lol Even tho CW sucks their shows are entertaining lol THo i think Dawn is a complete Moron and has something stuck up her “under opening” anywho she has made SO MANY mistakes for the Network like canceling Veronica Mars which was the only good show as well as REBA those shows where one of the shows that got the CW high viewing but i dont know what is wrong with her they need a new person to decide these type of things!!! I thnk a good idea for them to maybe get good rating for Melrose Place is to place it on the smae night as Gossip Girl I hink 90210 is dumb and is going to get cancel by May 2010 or after 3 episodes for fall of 2010 i think the whole network needs a makeover it was the greatest mistkae for them to get rid of the WB seriously they need to change ALOT of thinngs with FIRST getting rid of DAWN!! … so yea…

For the 96th time… canceling Veronica Mars was *not* a mistake.

The show had a dozen chances… lasted two seasons longer than most would have let it; it aired on CBS and MTV in special airings; they even got to put together that VM:FBI thing which was one of the worst pieces of television I’ve ever seen. Season 3 also became a meandering mess with a lead character that was annoying with no reason (at least the excellent Season 1 had a reason for her bitterness), and long stretches where the characters I actually cared about (Dick, Weevil, Wallace, Mac, Lamb, etc.) were largely absent. Toward the end it got less than 2 million viewers, at a time when other CW shows weren’t doing that badly. Canning VM was one of the few choices Dawn O. made that I back 100%.

Funny how NBC ruled Friday nights for 4 seasons with “Dateline” and a “Law & Order” show — and then they ripped it all apart for no reason a few years back so they could finish a pathetic fourth on the night. Now? They’re ruling Friday nights once again… with “Dateline” and a “Law & Order” show.

The take-home lesson, network execs? Leave well enough alone. FOX did not learn that lesson, hence why they are now a pathetic fourth on Friday nights.

Also im happy that Smallville got good ratings and viewers for a repeat Smallville is definitly gonna be here another year. Smallville this year with big changes got a huge amount of money and Smallville got new sets, new writers, directors, and more. Thanks, Rob R, for clarifying that L&O has a 20-episode order. I had read recently through Wikipedia that it’s a 22-show order. Prior to the announcement of the additional buy, Wiki was reporting 16 epi’s, then it showed 20 (after the announcement). I was on the site yesterday and noticed 22 episodes running for Season 20, so wondered if NBC decided to make a full season order.

I have to say I think the last four episodes of Dollhouse have been the best of the entire series. The two – especially the second – with Summer Glau were excellent, and the last one with the return of Alan Tudyk was also excellent.

I was a bit surprised, but somewhat pleased, to see Adelle turn bad – or “badder” – again. They seem to be fighting over the characterization of these characters.

Having Echo finally appear to be developing a consistent and engaging personality – even while dealing with multiple personalities – is what they should have done from episode one of season one. Having Echo working directly and closely with Ballard is also what should have been done from day one.

And I’ve been thinking about Summer’s performance – isn’t it weird that even cast as a sadistic psychotic torturer she’s STILL ADORABLE? I don’t know many actresses who could pull off that combo!
