Even though the CBS line up overall was down vs. their last new telecast night, it swept the competition away on Tuesday to average a 3.6 adults 18-49 rating on the night.
Compared to their last original telecasts on 11/14, NCIS was down 2% to a 4.3 adults 18-49 rating. NCIS: LA fell 16% to a 3.6 rating. While The Good Wife was flat with a 2.8 rating (but did hit a series high in average viewership).

After yet another telecast this season of  A Charlie Brown Christmas, ABC’s “What were they thinking?” comedy hour plunged as Scrubs fell 22% from last week to a 1.8 rating, and Better Off Ted found new levels of pitiful with a 1.3 rating (lowest ever) in its second outing, down 13% from its premiere.

NBC’s Sing-Off was up 13% from its premiere on Monday to a 2.6 rating, tieing Fox’s So You Think You Can Dance (which was flat vs. last week’s 2.3 rating) in the 8pm hour, and crushing the ABC comedies and Fox’s Gordon Ramsay: Cookalong Live special at 9pm which could manage only a 1.7 rating.

The Jay Leno Show was down 38% from its post Biggest Loser finale telecast last Tuesday, but its 1.8 rating will still have some “Leno Ragers” fuming.

You can see TV ratings from other recent Overnight ratings reports here.

Definitions:

*Fast Affiliate Ratings: These first national ratings, including demographics, are available at approximately 11 AM (ET) the day after telecast, and are released to subscribing customers daily. These data, from the National People Meter sample, are strictly time-period information, based on the normal broadcast network feed, and include all programming on the affiliated stations, sometimes including network programming, sometimes not. The figures may include stations that did not air the entire network feed, as well as local news breaks or cutaways for local coverage or other programming. Fast Affiliate ratings are not as useful for live programs and are likely to differ significantly from the final results, because the data reflect normal broadcast feed patterns. For example, with a World Series game, Fast Affiliate Ratings would include whatever aired from 8-11PM on affiliates in the Pacific Time Zone, following the live football game, but not game coverage that begins at 5PM PT. The same would be true of Presidential debates as well as live award shows and breaking news reports.

Rating: Estimated percentage of the universe of TV households (or other specified group) tuned to a program in the average minute. Ratings are expressed as a percent.

Share (of Audience): The percent of households (or persons) using television who are tuned to a specific program, station or network in a specific area at a specific time. (See also, Rating, which represents tuning or viewing as a percent of the entire population being measured.)

Time Shifted ViewingProgram ratings for national sources are produced in three streams of data – Live, Live+Same Day (Live+SD) and Live+7 Day. Time shifted figures account for incremental viewing that takes place with DVRs which are currently in approximately 24.4% of all U.S. TV households. Live+Same Day (Live+SD) include viewing during the same broadcast day as the original telecast, with a cut-off of 3:00AM local time when meters transmit daily viewing to Nielsen for processing. Live+7 Day ratings include incremental viewing that takes place during the 7 days following a telecast.

  1. rob says:

At least we got 2 seasons of Better Off Ted.

  2. cool says:

    LOL with ABC.

  3. Nick says:

Wow, CBS had an excellent night an annihilated the competition. Kudos to The Good Wife. It seems like it grew substantially in overall viewers since its last broadcast. Maybe it was because of Julianne Margeulis’s Golden Globe nomination sparking interest in the show!

  4. Julia says:

Interesting. NBC is well off its usual BL numbers to lead-in to Leno, but Leno is barely off its normal Tuesday rating.

  5. Joe says:

These r regular numbers for NCIS’s

  6. J.G. says:

February can’t come soon enough for ABC.

  7. Frick/John says:

Looks like TSO is a good lead-in for TJLS.

  8. Frick/John says:

Also, Scrubs has been good this season.

  9. S. says:

Not surprised with Better off Ted going down. The premiere was a real disaster. Like I said yesterday, they dumbed down the show, and watered down the characters. They all went from quirky to bland cutesy. The few viewers they had were not watching it because they wanted cutesy. In an attempt to appeal a broader audience they are loosing the core, and the quality. Before, ABC had a critically acclaimed show that very few watched. Now it has a turd that no one watches.

  10. ML says:

Very upsetting about Better Off Ted. Love that show. It’s a lot funnier than most sitcoms currently on tv. : (

  11. Claxton Markoni says:

Good for the Sing Off, it is currently the best show going on television right now, and that includes Better off Ted.

  12. rob says:

Scrubs and Better Off Ted are up against all repeats next Tuesday.

  13. BIG DADDY says:

This was one of the worse nights for broadcast tv that i’ve seen in awhile..
    The Sing off is pitiful
    Gordon Ramsey’s show is awful
Better of Ted/DEAD should never have been remade
    Scrubs is bad.
    The Forgotten is done
SYTYCD is downward… (should be summer only)

  14. Blackadder says:

ABC certainly arent doing themselves any favours with all their stupid repeats and christmas movies! CBS is an absolute powerhouse at the moment. It’s airing new episodes of its shows and killing in the ratings, plus I’d say it has the best weekly line up of all the networks.

The Good Wife is surprising, while it may not be the highest rated show on TV but last night it did better than an original epiosode of Greys Anatomy in viewer numbers! That has to count for something?!

  15. Holly says:

CBS had the same amount of total viewers as the other four networks combined

I know, total viewers are meaningless, but that’s still kind of impressive.

  16. Sparky says:

Really liked last nights NCIS. Not a fan of the spin-off – seems too forced. Of all of them I am really liking The Good Wife. If Will and Baxters conversation about Alicia is anything to go by, it loks as though something is definitely going to happen between the two of them. Kinda bumped that Will and Alicia did nt have any interaction last night after Baxter was caught considering the fact that she was responsible for bringing his friend down…Otherwise this is probably one of my new favorite shows.

  17. Johnny says:

The Sing-off was up? Wow, that’s a big surprise. NBC actually came in second for the night? Leno had better numbers than Gordon Ramsay? Am I reading this right?

  18. DuMont says:

So unfortunate are the ratings for ‘Better Off Ted’. I eagerly await a gargantuan ‘Rose Bowl’ lead-in to give this series a wider M18-49 sampling so that there may be an eleventh hour spike in the numbers leading to a creatively-merited third season.

Bully for The CW which is having wonderful success with their ‘Vampire Diaries’ marathon that so far is outperforming the Monday and Tuesday drama encore numbers (the ‘Vampire Diaries’ encore even attracted 150,000 more viewers and just 0.1 less in demo than the ‘Melrose Place’ fall finale last week).

  19. johnthemon says:

not bad for the sing-off. It may be this year’s “Superstars of Dance”, or it might actually turn out successful. Time will tell.

  20. Joe says:

Holly that is impressive even though useless but still something CBS can be happy about.

I think BOT has one more slim and I mean slim chance of being renewed is next week because all shows r in repeat

  21. Ron says:

    Wow for The Good Wife.

  22. johnthemon says:

apparently people only like Ramsay when he’s yelling at people, and fox paid the price.

  23. Ali says:

Reviving Scrubs was a BIG mistake. Happy for the good wife but viewers dont matter, I just wish it would go up to a 3! Hopefully her golden globe nom can do the trick.

  24. Vetinari says:

Yeah BoTed should just be a summer show, 12 episodes a summer. If they won’t do that then I guess just cancel it. It didn’t help that in these first two episodes they didn’t have much of the sci-fi aspect that drew viewers like me to check it out last season. It is now much more of a generic workplace comedy.

I don’t get why Scrubs is even on the air after a series finale that showed the cast and crew tearfully saying goodbye to each other.

  25. Holly says:

Have Golden Globe nominations ever had a noticable affect on a show’s ratings?

  26. MC says:

Hard to hear about Better Off Ted, but it’s not surprising. I was preparing for its early demise after the first episode. I just hope it gets to finish up its run on ABC before they pull the plug.

  27. Schmoker says:

So, I guess this means The Good Wife is even more likely to be canceled?

  28. Bob says:

Sigh, I wish Better Off Ted had some better ratings, I do really enjoy that show. I guess its just wishful thinking that they would put it on Wednesdays with some stronger shows, but at least we got two seasons out of it

  29. Jeremy says:

Nobody can ask for a better night than CBS every Tuesday… Ratings-wise that is.

  30. Billy says:

    Ouch at Scrubs :(

  31. Joe says:

Jeremy add Monday nights comedies and Thursdays and even Friday on CBS

  32. Ryan says:

Better Off Ted is doing way better than in its summer run. Its lowest rating was a .6 on June 30, 2009. It bounced back up for its fall premiere, but its unfortunate it doesn’t have the same writing this year. A don’t think it will be critically acclaimed right now.

  33. Danielle says:

I have found myself not enjoying Scrubs so far this season. I don’t like the changes to the cast and where is Eliot and Carla? No Janitor? Really!?! The new main character has to go – she is not funny at all. If they are going to go with a female med student to take J.D.’s place at least make the person likable and funny.

  34. Chuck Tranberg says:

Leno also easily beat a rerun of “The Forgotten” both in the demo and in actual viewers.

  35. jake says:

Cbs has aways takn pride in being the number one network in viewers so I bet they will renew The Good Wife

  36. R.G. says:

People in Houston couldn’t see Scrubs.

  37. Frick/John says:

@Danielle, I really wanted Dennis/Jo to be the new main. :(

  38. AniMatsuri says:

I enjoyed Cookalong Live. It’s too bad it couldn’t even muster past the-show-that-won’t-die Scrubs.

  39. Patrick says:

I dont think people knew the Gordon Ramsay special was on. I mean I didnt find out until like 8:30 when the Vampire Diaries was on commercial and was going through channels. So I guess if you didnt tune into Fox in the past week, you didnt know about it like myself.

  40. BigShouldersRtwinger says:

Bill, WTF is up with that Meier banner ad? It keeps covering up the navigation bar. I NEED TO GET TO THE CABLE NEWS PAGE!!! lol

Seriously, for the last couple days, the Meier ad always appears lower than I think you want it, making a mess out of the top of the page. I’m using Firefox, but it used to not do this with other ads. I don’t know.

  41. Bill Gorman says:

BigShouldersRtwinger, thanks for the heads up, because of the way the ads are served we cannot always see the problems. Will block the ad now.

  42. Tom says:

@Julia: “Interesting. NBC is well off its usual BL numbers to lead-in to Leno, but Leno is barely off its normal Tuesday rating.”

Again, Leno’s higher Tuesday ratings (relative to other days) predate any BL appearances, and possibly BL itself.

Leno’s ratings are entirely dependent on the (lack of) competition in the hour. Period.

  43. aznfratboy says:

When do networks generally announce whether a show is renewed for next season?

  44. Tego Livi says:

I watched The Sing-Off last night (I’ve never gotten into NCIS and there wasn’t anything else on) and I enjoyed the performances, but the filler material around it was deadly. I also wish they’d dump the “celebrity judge panel” format. It doesn’t work on Idol, it doesn’t work on that NBC summer thing, it doesn’t work on Dancing the the D-Listers….I don’t think it works anywhere. These semi-famous people are compelled to fill a few minutes after the performance with blather, and they inevitably bring the show to an abrupt halt. The singing gets the show going, then the “experts” slam the brake on again and again.

  45. cool says:

BigShouldersRtwinge, Adblock Plus (Firefox add on) can be your best friend :)

  46. BigShouldersRtwinger says:

Mr. Cool, I’m old (I still listen to records! and call CD’s “albums”). Help me out, what is that thing you mentioned?

  47. Julia says:

Tom, I would buy that if ratings for Leno actually went up on other days of the week when the competition is in repeats. I’m not sure where you’re getting the idea that Leno going up on Tuesday predates BL, unless you mean The Tonight Show. BL has been Leno’s lead-in on Tuesdays since the premiere.

  48. Bill Gorman says:

aznfratboy, different networks do things differently. Some networks start dribbling out renewal announcements in March and April (I’m surprised more don’t do that with the obvious renewals to get better visibility for them instead of lumping them into the May news overload). Others mostly wait until the upfront meetings which are typically around the second week in May.

However, at least recently, relatively few *interesting* renewal announcements happen before May. By interesting I mean the fate of “bubble” shows.

And perhaps it goes without saying, but there are almost never any acknowledgements of cancellations other than that show’s non-existence on next falls schedules which are released at those upfront meetings.

  49. Holly says:

    @aznfratboy,
Early renewals are announced as early as March some years. Bubble shows aren’t usually announced until right before upfronts in May.

  50. Bill Gorman says:

cool, let’s not be advocating anything in our comments that reduces our revenue!

  51. cool says:

    Oh sorry Bill :)

  52. ron says:

Cookalong aired at 9pm. No one would want to cook for a 10pm dinner.

  53. KingOfTheLab says:

I am shocked Better off Ted didn’t do worse than that. That is one horrible show.

  54. Ali says:

    @Holly

Well Golden Globes actually do influence me to go watch tv shows I never watched. I resume it could be the case for some people too. IN fact, The nominations were announced yesterday and look what happened to the viewership of the Good Wife.

  55. John says:

Chicago’s CW had NBA Basketball last night.

  56. Riff Rafferty says:

“Better Off Ted” has to be the most criminally-ignored show ever. No one watches it, it didn’t get a single Emmy nomination, and even the 18-34 no-life loser demographic, who babble endlessly online about shows watched by no one, can’t be bothered babbling about it.

And whoever those 1 million people are who watched “Scrubs” and then changed the channel, they should be shot in the face as punishment for having awful taste.

  57. Kyle says:

I think ABC screwed up big time last week!!! they really should of tryed to air a different christmas special last week instead of showing Charlie Brown/Prep and Landing. They should of shown Charlie Brown last night (for the first time this christmas season) and would of got big numbers. Then air Prep & Landing to start off its Wednsday Block for the first time of the season. They would of had bigger ratings!!!

  58. Joe Jackson says:

NCIS 2 has gotten better, it was horrible when the season started

  59. Ren says:

Bill could you explain exactly what are the upfront meetings in May, and what happens at these meetings? :)

  60. thirdsaint says:

With ABC struggling on quite a few shows here maybe it won’t take AS much to get FlashForward or V renewed (assuming they don’t bomb when they come back).

  61. Julia says:

Ren, upfronts are the presentations each network gives to announce their new season schedule. They invite big advertisers to attend and it’s all basically a sales pitch to sell advertising at supposedly reduced rates by buying “upfront” rather than waiting to pay for scatter prices during the season. The networks show previews of their new shows (in some cases they will show an entire pilot) and there are speeches from the execs talking about what a great network they are and why you should buy air time on that network. That’s basically it.

  62. evie says:

Glad the “Good Wife” is doing well….but could care less of NCIS Los Angeles. Just wish they would have given the lead roles to some other actors. No comparison with NCIS.

  63. C.J. says:

I wanted to watch The Sing-Off’s second night, but it was preempted in Portland for Trail Blazers basketball, so I watched Ted, and much as I love the show, that episode just didn’t make me laugh. That and the fact that it’s almost the holiday season may explain its’ low rating.

Let’s just hope ABC and the show get it straightened out by New Year’s Day – that should be Ted’s make-or-break moment.

  64. Stacy says:

Can Mr. Gorman make it any more obvious he is a fan of Leno? He is incredibly biased toward him. Leno only got a 1.8 because The Forgotten was a repeat. And that series doesn’t get good ratings with new episodes. Mr. Gorman forgot to mention the fact that Leno only got 5.4 viewers overall, and normally gets about 6/6.5 million when The Biggest Loser comes before. It is not a matter of Leno being good, but others shows doing badly.

I am getting sick of Gorman’s comments about Leno haters “fuming” when he gets supposedly good ratings. Gee, Gorman never says anything about Leno fans “fuming” when Leno gets crap ratings, which is often…..

  65. Tumbleweeds says:

Excuse my ignorance but who or what is Gordon Ramsay?

  66. X-R.G. says:

I like Gordon Ramsey’s shows…though I don’t think FOX promoted it well nor were they too concerned about the ratings…it’s a holiday filler…though I thought last night’s special was cluttered with guests and video feeds…Bring back Kitchen Nightmares and Hells Kitchen when more episodes are ready…I hear KN may be on fridays…as long as it’s not up against Smallville – then game on!

  67. Ren says:

    Thanks Julia! :)

  68. Don J says:

Solid numbers for The Good Wife. I really hope the nonsense discussion that it’s doomed or as good as cancelled as many of the posters on this site continually predict dies off.

I like Better off Ted, but yeah it’s DOA.

NCIS LA is fun. I enjoyed last night’s holiday themed episode.

  69. Don J says:

    tumbleweeds:
Ramsay is a British celebrity chef who has his own reality shows here in the States (Hell’s Kitchen) and (Kitchen Nightmares) which are spinoffs of his UK versions.

The Cookalong Chef last night was holiday filler that FOX greenlighted during the summer.

  70. X-R.G. says:

Just saw FOX’s Christmas Eve programming line-up – A MArathon of “TIL DEATH”? ???? – What ever happened to Christmas Movies – and then “Cops” on Christmas Day?!?!?! FOX – you have your moments and then other times you just Don’t have ANYTHING…I’m disapointed… :(

  71. Cdiddy says:

Big Daddy, although you may not have enjoyed last night’s selection, my PVR was humming. SYTYCD, The Sing Off, Scrubs, BoTed, Charlie Brown Christmas and Cookalong were all recorded – that’s six hours of programming. The nice thing about living on the west coast of Canada is that we also have access to the Eastern network feeds so Cookalong worked perfectly at 6:00pm!

  72. X-R.G. says:

    Check that – it’s worse – TIL DEATH MARATHON ON C-MAS DAY… ?? :(

  73. usedtolovecoco says:

That’s too bad about Scrubs– this season really is good, not anything like the disaster that was seasons 6-7.

  74. Fennerbender says:

Scrubs is not holding my interest and I loved the original. If not for Bones, Castle and House I would have nothing to watch. Save me Chuck!!!! I need you back in the #1 slot to give me that fourth option.

  75. Tumbleweeds says:

Don J, thanks, never watched those shows. Sorry for my ignorance.

  76. luke says:

ncis la has gotten better .This last 4 episodes were great

  77. JR says:

Not a good situation for TV if “The Sing-Off” is the best thing going. :) The show didn’t do as well as “The Biggest Loser” on Tuesdays- then gain, NBC is so short on hits outside of football, as it is, that it probably doesn’t matter all that much.

  78. Tommy says:

Ouch for BoT, and Scrubs. I don’t see how ABC can justify ordering anymore episodes for either show at this point. I didn’t see how either got renewed after last year so who knows what ABC will do with them.

I think the predictions that Scrubs will get additional episodes ordered and moved to Wednesdays at 8 are pretty much out of the question with these kind of ratings. I can’t remember what Hank’s ratings were, but Scrubs ratings last night aren’t far from what Hank did. I think ABC would be better served by launching Romantically Challenged even if it’s a short run.

  79. fringe fan says:

i’m surprised more people didn’t watch chef ramsey it was definitely better than anything else on tv it was funny and informative and the food came out delicious

  80. What happened to NCIS?

I only discovered NCIS about three years ago with its rerun evening package but was soon hooked. The show was solid, top-notch entertainment from the beginning, but somehow over the past couple of seasons, especially this season, all of them there have kicked it up another notch. How can a show, with basically the same cast, just keep getting better, fresher, etc.

What really amazes me, however, with my track record of enjoying shows that do OK but not great in the ratings, is that the entire nation keeps discovering NCIS in greater numbers.

There have been very, very few average episodes in NCIS six-plus years on the air and certainly none this year.

This week’s was brilliant, great Christmas theme, funny, touching and just very interesting TV drama.

Good job to everybody at NCIS.

  81. Marlene says:

Better Off Ted is a good show! Last week’s ep was funnier than last night’s. Portia is ALWAYS HILARIOUS!!!!

  82. vsaint says:

NCIS has never had the name recognition that other shows have like CSI, HOUSE, GREY’S, LOST or even HEROES.

NCIS:LA is a decent show, and i enjoy it.
But i’m getting alittle turned off with too much Police Shows. Now CBS is planning a Criminal Minds spinoff and maybe a Hawaii 5-0 remake.

I really hope IDOL/GLEE and LOST pounds NCIS:LA into the ground.
It’s already guaranteed for 2nd season. But it needs to be brought back down to earth alittle.

  83. forg says:

If only The Good Wife could climb back to 3.0, then the worry that it may get canceled would go away but a flat 2.8 is not bad, the potential to go back to 3.0 is very likely. But I think CBS is satisfied with how the show is performing for now plus it gets good critical reviews which is something not common these days for CBS dramas and Julianna would likely get an Emmy nod next year, I hope CBS won’t waste the opportunity and since the show is semi-procedural it has potential to grow more in the demo. I hope they’ll be patient

Ah poor Ted but expected. I hope Scrubs climbs back to 2.0 next week. At least Scrubs beat the Fox special for what its worth unlike Ted.

    Impressive numbers for Sing Off

  84. Theoacme says:

If CBS can keep that ratio up, it may matter one day…

…then again, they brought back Judge Wapner for a day recently, so maybe not :(

Two words to goose The Good Wife’s ratings…Doug Ross

  85. ljo says:

I think if The Good Wife has the potential to increase its ratings, it should have done it last night when its competition was Leno and a repeat of a very lowly rated ABC show.

  86. tom says:

The Good Wife received over 14 million viewers last night. was number one in its time slot.

I find this above comment so sad “If only The Good Wife could climb back to 3.0, then the worry that it may get canceled would go away”..

Uh The only worry that the Good Wife is going to be cancelled only seems to be on this website. Entertainment Weekly recentley ran an article talking about thr huge success of The Good Wife and how other networks were clamoring to make shows like it.

This is the ONLY Place that talks about the Good Wife Being cancelled. CBS knows it is coming back next season, the producers know it is coming back next season. Julienne Margulies isnt looking for another job for next season because she knows it is coming back

Sometimes the chatters in this room just have no sense of reality

  87. Tommy says:

tom if you hate the rational Bill and Robert use on this site, why don’t you just stop coming here?

They have never said that TGW is 100% gone, they only point out that the show is on the bubble. People need to stop taking this stuff so personally, we get it you are a fan, but that shouldn’t cloud you judgment.

Maybe you should read this before acting all high and mighty when you condemn them for using 18-49 demos:

    http://tvbythenumbers.com/demystifying-the-s

  88. Theoacme says:

If audience numbers alone were enough, tom, Worst Week would still be on the air, and NBC and Warner Brothers would have paid up the wazoo to renew ER for Sundays at 9 Central (and at least the demos would have supported the latter)…

…I miss Neela and Gates (how do you cry on this site?!)

  89. Sue Maple says:

Jay Leno last night was an ad for other NBC shows and NBC personalities. Our local NBC newscast in turn advertised what was on Leno. It seems as if NBC programming is turning into a mobius strip of NBC programming. No actual content! :)

  90. forg says:

The Eleventh Hour pulled good total viewer numbers last season but it was still canceled because the demos are not good enough. Same with Shark a few years ago but that show did last for two seasons. With that said, you can’t blame why some people like me are worried that The Good Wife might not get a renewal. It’s not on the brink of cancellation but it is not a shoo-in for renewal unlike NCIS LA at this point of the season. I love that show and I hope CBS sticks with it.

  91. tom, do you understand what “Entertainment Weekly” does?

Julianna Margulies doesn’t look for jobs; people offer her jobs.

This is the ONLY Place that talks about the Good Wife Being cancelled. Do you understand what this site does? (hint: it’s the slogan)

  92. Tego Livi says:

Judging Amy got cancelled in the same timeslot The Good Wife is in because of poor performance in the 18-49s, but it was also being beaten by SVU. The Good Wife is slaughtering its major network competition, but presumably more people are watching cable or independent stations (I know here the FOX stations newscast does very well at that time). I’m not sure what TGW could do to attract younger demos, unless Alicia’s kids were a tad older (and hotter). Nothing wrong with them, but they aren’t played as “magnet characters” expected to draw their own audience; they’re just the main character’s children.

  93. Pat says:

If The Forgotten was a first run episode it’s enough to knock Leno down to a sub 1.5, probably a 1.3 or 1.4. There are people a lot smarter than me who think the last Jay Leno Show will air the Wednesday before New Year’s. I tend to think it’ll last slightly longer, maybe even one full year!

Holly wrote: I know, total viewers are meaningless, but that’s still kind of impressive.

Total viewers is meaningless only to advertisers and TV execs. To the public, they mean a lot.

  95. Jon K says:

Fwiw, CBS seems to be more supportive of The Good Wife this year than Eleventh Hour last year. EH was only given an additional 5 episode order. Good Wife was given an extra 9 for a full season, and then an extra one for a total of 23.

  96. Holly says:

    @Jon K,

I think that was just because they needed to make room for Harper’s Island.

  97. Jackie says:

I think that TGW picked up in the ratings because SOA had its season finale.I know SOA is a cable show but between that and the GG Nod I think both helped.Just a thought………..LOL!! :-)

  98. Jackie says:

And OLT, The Sing-Off was really good!!Those singers were so good and it was facinating to watch………judges were cool and no cheap shots……….they are really very nice.(comparatively):-)

  99. David says:

I love NCIS but last night’s show was to politically correct. Made me want to throw up.

  100. Kate says:

Yay for NCIS anf The Good Wife!

  101. Howard Beale says:

The wheelchair bound viewers of CBS need to take a moment to reflect during this holiday season, with its holiday trees and holiday spirit that all Muslims are good people.

Yes, Preacher Shane Brennan brings us a pre-holiday day NCIS doubleheader of innocent Muslims being castigated by horrible people of some other indeterminent faith.

This is what we celebrate Holiday for a week from Friday. Good lessons learned, Shane, you’ve opened this eager viewer’s eyes. I really hated all of those people prior to last Tuesday, until you did us all a solid, I never figured out to see people as individuals and as they actually are.

Kind of reminiscent of “A Christmas Carol,” don’t you think?

  102. Gary A says:

Okay, let me get this straight. Because some people on this site defend programs like “The Good Wife” or “Castle” ( as examples ), pointing out valid reasons why the shows seem likely to be renewed for next season based on total viewers and other criteria such as being in house productions, they are irrational fans and need to lighten up as this site is devoted to the 18 – 49 demographics only and the info shared by the webmasters is just their take on the matter, don’t shoot the messenger, as it were.
However, the continuing inane babble over series like “Ugly Betty”, “Dollhouse”, “Heroes” & “V” is from intelligent informed members of this site and not from rabid fans who are defending their favorite programs. Is this some sort of double standard/ If your a fan of a show that seems destined to be a cult series and never a huge mass hit, then all things must be done to preserve those shows because the other shows ( the ones doing better in overall ratings and in many cases the 18 -49 demo range as well but maybe not as high as would be desired ) are all crap, junk and should be cancelled to save the “chosen ones”, which ironically, are chosen by their fans.
How about some reality thrown in the mix? “The Good Wife” may be slightly on the bubble because of lower 18 -49 demos but in all likelihood will be renewed because CBS isn’t likely to cancel a top 20 series in it’s first season with good reviews and a solid albeit less desirable fan base.
“Without a Trace” last season was cancelled more due to it’s cost than it’s ratings, which were down in the important demos but still high overall. Same thing is true this year for “Cold Case” which is aging and ratings are soft for the cost to air new episodes.
“Judging Amy” lasted three seasons before being cancelled.
“Shark” tanked ( sorry for the pun ) because of it’s scheduling. Sundays at 10 in it’s second season meant it was rarely seen before 10:30 during the football season which hurt it with total viewers and the 18 – 49 crowd.
“Eleventh Hour” was not critically as well received as “TGW” and ratings overall were sluggish for the series, even up against a fading “ER” on NBC.
“Castle” fits well on ABC’s schedule and does okay but not great in the 18 – 49 demos but decently in overall ratings. It is an inhouse production and more than likely will be renewed by ABC ( unless ratings drop dramatically both in 18 – 49 and overall ) for next season as it is is a good utility player and can be scheduled many places to fill gaps ( 8:00 or another 10:00 slot ). They also have other bigger problems to worry about and that should make “Castle” safe for another season.
“Ugly Betty” was shifted from Thursdays to Fridays this season because it’s ratings were dropping. ABC wanted to get one more season out of it for syndication purposes. It’s shift to Wednesdays is due more to lack of good backup series than ABc having any desire to “save” the show. It fits well with the comedies airing before it and barring a sharp increase in ratings ( doubtful ), this is the final season of “Ugly Betty”.
“Dollhouse” wasn’t well received last season except by it’s fan base of Joss Whedonites. Fox renewed it becaus ethey wanted to test it’s potential and because of the desire to work with Whedon. It failed – big time. But fans are still pissing and moaning that the show should have been saved and Fox could have done more to promote it, protect it, etc. The majority of people watching tv didn’t like it or care to watch it. Show cancelled and even if Fox put it on after “AI” or “House”, the outcome would be the same.
“Heroes” had potential in it’s first season and did well in overall ratings and the 18 – 49 demo. But like many other shows on NBC, they took the sign that the show was creating a buzz and getting some interest that they could do anyhting they wanted and the second season was a bust. That it still exisits on a major network has more to do with NBC’s poor programming choices and a still loyal ( but declining ) fan base.
“V” was reconceived from a miniseries that was a hit for NBC back in the early 1980′s. NBC also tried to make it a regualr series in the 1984-1985 season. It failed. There is a chance that “V” may make the cut and survive for another year because it’s on ABC and they will likely be more willing to let it play longer to see what might happen. Particularly with the loss of “Lost” and the likelihood “FlashForward” will be canceled at the end of the year. But even it’s most rabid fans, will have to concede the show has dropped in it’s 4 week run and is not a slam dunk for longevity.
I am not speaking as a fan of any particular show ( although I do have favorites as do most people ) but as someone who I think gets what this site is supposed to represent ( the numbers ) and a logical discussion, critique, etc. of information regarding the state of network television today.

  103. A.M. says:

For heaven’s sake, let “Scrubs” die and move “Ted” to the Wednesday-night comedy lineup. That’s the biggest, and most welcome, surprise of the season: real TV on Wednesdays.

  104. Justin says:

I dunno, the worst time to read into would be the week or two after series finales and the week of Christmas.

The real numbers to pay attention to will be 2nd – 3rd week of Jan when people are back to their usual schedule.

  105. Justin says:

Shows I can’t wait to come back: Chuck, 24, LOST
