Lead by the penultimate episode of Survivor: Samoa, and against reduced original broadcast competition, CBS dominated the ratings on Thursday.

Note: Fox affiliates were scheduled to carry the Colts/Jaguars game locally in the Indianapolis and Jacksonville (although it may have been blacked out in Jax, there was no blackout) markets. Those ratings will be removed from these numbers in the final ratings, so the preliminary numbers for Fox shows are subject to more than the typical revisions, likely downwards.

Even though it was universally down vs. last week, CBS’ all new line up was way too much for the reduced competition. Survivor: Samoa was down 7% to a 3.9 adults 18-49 rating. CSI fell 10% to a 3.5 rating, and The Mentalist slipped 3% to a 3.5 rating.

NBC’s SNL: A Very Gilly Christmas did surprisingly (to me) well, averaging a 3.1 rating from 8-10pm. That’s identical to NBC’s 8-10pm average last Thursday. And since it’s 3.6 rating at 9:30 was better than the typical 30 Rock rating, it may have provided the boost that propelled The Jay Leno Show up 6% from last Thursday to a 1.7 rating. Another tough morning for the “Leno Ragers”.

And I rarely comment on repeat performance, but it’s interesting that Vampire Diaries repeats were quite competitive with both Grey’s Anatomy and Fringe repeats, and better than the average new Melrose Place episode.

In Late-Night Local People Meters Thursday night:

  • Conan O’Brien (1.2/5 in 18-49 in local people meters) topped CBS’s Late Show (1.0/4) in Nielsen’s 24 local markets with People Meters.
  • At 12:35 a.m., Jimmy Fallon (0.8/5 in 18-49 in local people meters) tied CBS’s Late Late Show (0.6/4).

You can see TV ratings from other recent Overnight ratings reports here.

Definitions:

Fast Affiliate Ratings: These first national ratings, including demographics, are available at approximately 11 AM (ET) the day after telecast, and are released to subscribing customers daily. These data, from the National People Meter sample, are strictly time-period information, based on the normal broadcast network feed, and include all programming on the affiliated stations, sometimes including network programming, sometimes not. The figures may include stations that did not air the entire network feed, as well as local news breaks or cutaways for local coverage or other programming. Fast Affiliate ratings are not as useful for live programs and are likely to differ significantly from the final results, because the data reflect normal broadcast feed patterns. For example, with a World Series game, Fast Affiliate Ratings would include whatever aired from 8-11PM on affiliates in the Pacific Time Zone, following the live football game, but not game coverage that begins at 5PM PT. The same would be true of Presidential debates as well as live award shows and breaking news reports.

Rating: Estimated percentage of the universe of TV households (or other specified group) tuned to a program in the average minute. Ratings are expressed as a percent.

Share (of Audience): The percent of households (or persons) using television who are tuned to a specific program, station or network in a specific area at a specific time. (See also, Rating, which represents tuning or viewing as a percent of the entire population being measured.)

Time Shifted Viewing – Program ratings for national sources are produced in three streams of data – Live, Live+Same Day (Live+SD) and Live+7 Day. Time shifted figures account for incremental viewing that takes place with DVRs which are currently in approximately 24.4% of all U.S. TV households. Live+Same Day (Live+SD) include viewing during the same broadcast day as the original telecast, with a cut-off of 3:00AM local time when meters transmit daily viewing to Nielsen for processing. Live+7 Day ratings include incremental viewing that takes place during the 7 days following a telecast.

Survivor wins again. And 4 million for a Anatomy repeat?

  • Mark

SNL did do pretty well. Followed by a big drop for Leno!

  • rob

I would also guess some kind of game aired on the CW because those repeat #s for VD are high.

I cant wait for ABC Thursday to have new episodes. These repeats #s are horrific!

Look at that drop on Leno. How sad!!

  • Tommy

Wow SNL’s special did great! I’m pretty impressed by those numbers. Survivor is really doing well too, I can’t wait to see what the ratings will look like for the Sunday finale.

  • Johnjohn

You gotta wonder how CSI and The Mentalist fail to get a boost by running against reruns. In The Mentalist’s case, the later timeslot, evidenced by the high DVR numbers, is highly responsible, but still, it’s essentially the same numbers the shows are getting against GA and PP originals.

  • http://tvbythenumbers.com Bill Gorman

rob, no information as yet on any CW sports pre-emptions, but will update as I see anything.

  • http://www.cricketmx.com battye

Those are some impressive numbers for the SNL special. I wonder if Weekend Update Thursday will get similar results when it resumes?

  • Chuck Tranberg

Lately Leno has been beating ABC at 9pm in reruns (and even some original programs). CBS is still in originals and we’ll see how that goes next week, I expect CBS will win but the ? is by how much?

  • Marcos

GA 8pm repeat did worse than FlashFoward repeat last week, but still not enough to make ABC regret replacing FF repeat.

  • Mike

How telling is it that the Fringe Repeat beat the Greys repeat for the first 1/2 hour and then lost views in the 2nd half hours.

Says to me that some people gave Fringe a try and then switched back to the Grey’s repeat.

Being a Fringe fan (not enough to watch a repeat) I hope it does better on Jan 11 following House.

  • http://www.cricketmx.com battye

What is going to replace Survivor on CBS?

  • Ren

Great ratings for the Mentalist, love the show!

  • John

    Hey Bill Gorman,

When will CBS release their mid-season schedule?…AND also for ABC’s mid-season?…The Final Question; Post Super-Bowl>>>Still the strong Favorite Survivor 20 that is most still likely to get thye coveted spot?…

  • http://tvbythenumbers.com Bill Gorman

Mike, your conclusion that Fringe watchers switched to Grey’s is unsupported by the facts. 50+% of the adults 18-49 last night were *not* watching ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox and the CW. Those Fringe watchers could have gone many other places, those Grey’s watchers could have come from many other places.

  • Jared

The Jacksonville Fox affiliate carried the game? That surprises me because I thought Jaguar home games were getting blacked out

  • http://tvbythenumbers.com Bill Gorman

John, Robert’s been given broad dates for the CBS announcements, which effectively amount to “soon”.

  • http://tvbythenumbers.com Bill Gorman

Jared, you are correct that there was a blackout threat, not sure if it happened or not. Will edit that into the post.

  • rodshooter

Guessing the new sketches helped SNL. That is a huge improvement and a clear sign of what NBC needs to do starting next year with their Thursday block. Maybe a Thursday Night Live for a half or full hour should be in the works. TNL could be huge. Already got the abbreviated name. LOL!

CBS’ combo of CSI and The Mentalist are hanging around that 15 million viewer mark but I do feel that CBS should’ve never touched The Mentalist.

  • rodshooter

The Jacksonville Fox affiliate carried the game? That surprises me because I thought Jaguar home games were getting blacked out —— It didn’t get blacked out because the game was sold out. It was Jacksonville’s first sell out of the year.

  • Edward

    lol @ CSI’s numbers.

    CBS- Criminally Bad Stuff
    Critical Breakdown of the Senses
    Crappy Broadcasting for Seniors

  • John

    Thanks for the info Bill…

I am always wondering about this situation; Let’s say all these shows airs at the same time in their respective networks, will American idol 18-49 demos be STRONG?…

CBS airs 2.5 Men and Big Bang Theory
    ABC airs Grey’s Anatomy
    Fox airs American Idol
NBC airs Football Night in America OR The Biggest Loser

I picked these shows because these shows has one of the strongesr demos for their respective networks….I know some of u will say this airing will never happen…BUT let’s just say ‘IF’ it airs……

WILL AMERICAN IDOL 18-49 DEMOS be STILL STRONG AS USUAL?

  • nkinsey

I tried to watch the SNL special (since their past Xmas stuff is amazing!!). However, with Gilly being the “host”, I just couldn’t do it. SUCH a stupid character (the original was bad, so why they thought to do it as a recurring character is beyond me)! It just wasn’t worth those bits to watch the other brilliant ones.

  • http://tvbythenumbers.com Bill Gorman

John, will get back to you on that as soon as I finish an offline discussion of angel pinhead dancing density.

  • Mumbo

    Wow Grey’s reruns do lousy.

Pretty impressive that an SNL clip show did that well, but to be fair it was only really up against CBS. I wonder how many people were tuning in just for “Dick in a Box” and wound up staying the whole two hours.

Leno has been trending up a bit during these weeks with quiet broadcast competition, and he’s been beating ABC reruns by a decent margin too yet. Wonder how the haters will find a way to twist that around.

” I wonder if Weekend Update Thursday will get similar results when it resumes?”

*If* it resumes(?), and I doubt it, the first three couldn’t even break a 2.0. They hauled Parks down with them. Weekend Update just isn’t a big draw when it’s not an election year.

  • Blackadder

Greys repeats really bad! As does PP and no surprises with Fringe really. It only picked up because of the number of repeats so I wouldnt expect it to repeat well! VD I expect only did that well due to the number of repeats on. It repeats better than GA and Fringe considering its a CW show and has lower ratings! But those GA numbers are really poor! ABC need to pick up the pace, CBS and FOX have really been taking advantage of ABC’s poor sheduling over the holiday period! It will be intersting to see if they get back those numbers once they start airing origianl epsiodes again?!

  • Lara

I think its time for CSI to end, last night was boring once again like it was last week and teh week before. I dont like the idea of having cases connected together, the writers are lazy, imstead of writing several stories they strech one big one.. I think I will stop watching..

  • johnthemon

#2 is good for NBC. What do they usually average on thursdays? This is probably higher, but considering it was up against repeats it’s hardly a fair comparison.

  • johnthemon

    @ Edward,
    Amen.

    CBS
    Crappy Boring & Sloppy

  • Tommy

Everyone should know by now that Grey’s Anatomy won’t do well in repeats. That show never has and neither has any of ABC’s shows, so I don’t understand why people act like it’s the demise of the show.

  • Tom

    A) What the hell is a Gilly Christmas?

    B) How ugly is it that it does, what, nearly 50% better than Community & Parks?

And I will continue to point out those new shows.. aren’t seeing major increases (hell, CBS was down) with nearly everyone else in repeats. People have largely settled on their programming for each hour by now.. which means that Leno repeats, even up against all repeats, will probably struggle to get .5 better than their average vs. new programming. Which is enough to be profitable, but it is hardly like Leno numbers will double or treble in early January/Summer.

  • http://tvbythenumbers.com Bill Gorman

johnthemon, What do they usually average on thursdays?

    Please read the post.

  • gmyers

forget that! that gilly demo is shocking!!

  • nkinsey

Tom- Gilly is a HORRIBLE character that Kristen Wiig (who I sometimes quite like, especially in Knocked Up) plays. Appearance-wise, think of Mary Catherine Gallagher style with a fro.

It SHOULD have been a one-off sketch (done once and forgotten); but since in the past few years, SNL doesn’t know what constitutes a one-off character versus one deserving recurring status, it has been done a bunch of times.

I kind of feel bad for Kristen. Like when Amy Poehler was on SNL, the show relies WAY too heavily on her as the main character; when both of them are MUCH stronger as the supporting cast.

In Christmas metaphors, SNL is Tiny Tim with Kristen as its crutch.

  • Master Moron

The Mentalist was horrible last night. So freaking boring. What was the point of hooking up Van Pelt and that douche bag if we don’t even get a sex scene out of it? If this were on Fox we would have gotten a sex scene by now. I hope the ratings continue to go down.

  • d

Wonder if Leno will get in second place tonight. If so, this might be the first time ever that he has not been in last place for a single night in a whole week. Although, it could be tougher since 20/20 will probably do better for ABC than anything else this past week at that time.

  • d

Clarification, the first time Leno has been in second place or better every night of a full week.

  • http://tvbythenumbers.com Robert Seidman

    d, it’s possible. 20/20 is new, but Numb3rs is a repeat.

  • http://hotmail.com toby jones

I am not surprised about how well the SNL special did. It was also another great show of CSI and i think its fair to say CSI dominates any other drama.

  • NBCisaBUST

Well another poor showing for Bones…come on Fox dump this awful program.

  • nkinsey

NBCisaBUST- Go away. Each week you troll onto this site with your stupid anti-Bones comments. If you’ve never seen an ep, you can’t say anything about it.

How have you not been banned from this site yet?

  • Frick/John

If CSIs numbers stay the same, how long do you think it will last (season wise).

  • Blackadder

Bones was a repeat and it did ok, dont watch if you dont like! Oh and how can one justify dumping shows that get 15 to 16 million viewers? I dont watch any of these shows but there are alot of people out there who do and aparently enjoy them since they keep coming back week after week!

  • NBCisaBUST

    nkinsey,
Last time i checked this is America, i’m just stating how i feel…sorry you dont agree

  • http://tvbythenumbers.com Bill Gorman

Frick/John, If CSI ratings stay the same (which is highly unlikely, most broadcast shows decline over time), it will be on the air forever. :)

Even if it declines at the same rate *relative* to the rest of the CBS line up it’s probably still around for a very long time.

  • Stacy

    Mumbo,

How will the “Leno Ragers” twist around the fact that his numbers are edging up? Gee, I don’t know, how did you Leno Lovers twist it around when he was getting crap ratings (and really, he’s still getting pretty much the same numbers he did on The Tonight Show).

The only reason he is getting (slightly) better ratings now is because he has moved traditional TS segments like “Jaywalking” and “Headlines” earlier in the show. He’s basically recycling the same crap he’s always done- doesn’t say much for his talent/creativity. Why else would more people start watching after his ratings have been in the toilet for 3 months? He might as well call this The Tonight Show, Part II.

Actually, though, the media is somewhat responsible for his upswing too. They created so much BAD publicity for Leno and think they inadvertently created a “reverse” affect.

  • nkinsey

There’s a difference between “stating how you feel” and trolling. Since there’s ZERO justification used in your statement against Bones – and the fact that you say the EXACT sentence every week – put you in the troll category.

    According to Wikipedia:

“a troll is someone who posts controversial, inflammatory, extraneous, or off-topic messages in an online community, such as an online discussion forum, chat room or blog, with the primary intent of provoking other users into an emotional response[1] or of otherwise disrupting normal on-topic discussion.[2]“

  • Frick/John

Do CW not realise that with all these shows of TVD, viewers will probably not want to look at it again when it returns?

  • Joe D

Isn’t the 1.5 Leno did last night what Zucker said it would do especially against a repeat at least on ABC? The jury is still out as to whether the experiment will last a second season, but if it’s making $$ I doubt Comcast will care to change ot when it takes over.

  • Alison

Yay for The Mentalist! Another fab episode last night and a fab episode the week before. The show keeps getting better and better!

Simon Baker is a fantastic actor and thoroughly deserves his Golden Globe and SAG nominations.

And for ‘Master Moron’ wanting a sex scene with Rigsby and Van Pelt – you missed it – it was in Episode 8 (His Red Right Hand).

  • Frick/John

Anyone else think the title of last nights CSI was a homage to Better Off Ted? :L

  • Judy

Right on, I totally agree with Alison. The Mentalist is a fabulous series and Simon Baker well deserved the Golden Globe and the SAG nominations for BEST DRAMATIC ACTOR!

I was surprised however that Simon Baker was the only male actor in the dramatic category to be nominated from the three major TV networks for these awards.

  • USAmerica1st

You can decode the “CBS” acronym anyway you want, it still did a 1,2,3 ‘body slam’ on everything in sight and in every way possible last night. Apparently, most people tuned in to CBS and never touched the remote again for 3 hours. Impressive.

  • Shem

So bad for ABC repeats. Gilly was a boring character- the shows was unwatchable after a few minutes. watched Earl on tbs. ‘very funny’

  • Shem

    show*

Hey, I put a new email- still an ugly display- gettin a real pic soon!

  • Holly

    @Shem,
The MonsterID is connected to your IP address, not the email address.

  • http://remotecontrolsyou.com Julia

Holly, it turns out it’s connected to your email address. But hopefully most sock puppets are too lazy to change their email anyway. :)

  • Blackadder

Frick/John I agree! There is such a thing as too much of something! But it’ll probably hold its audience when it comes back, we’ll have to wait and see! Each of the 10 origianl epsiodes has already been aired at least 3 times in the past 3 months, I think! Just because it’s doing well doesnt mean they need to keep trying to ram it down our throats!

  • Master Moron

@Alison, that episode only showed Rigsby and Van Pelt waking up in bed together. If waking up is how you define sex, then you’re doing it wrong.

  • Alison

Master Moron, if you are expecting to see anything racier in The Mentalist then you will be waiting a very long time! Despite the later time slot sex scenes in The Mentalist just aren’t going to happen!

  • DuMont

After four nights of Week 13, the demo derby is a tight race for second and fourth:

    A18-49 (4 nights, Week 13)
    ————————–
    1. CBS 3.7
    2. NBC 2.2
    3. FOX 2.1
    4. UNI 1.4
    4. ABC 1.4
    6. CW 0.7

  • vsaint

Does CBS #’s being the same against originals mean, they don’t share much of the same audience?
I guess with DVR, Online, DVD and no real urge to have to watch episodes.
Except Survivor it was the 2nd last episode, so alittle surprised with that.

  • Edward

@USAmerica1st: Nobody called CBS a Crappy Business Scheme. We’re talking about the quality of its programming. And FYI, FOX seems to win every week in the 18-34 demo and 18-49 demo :) Why is this? Better programming. I give credit where credit is due… I hate FOX for what it did to Futurama and other shows but I’ve moved on. Shows like Glee, Fringe, Dollhouse show at least a willingness to give new things a try (even if you don’t like them).

But CBS seems to think that they can just make copies of their shows and use their large viewership to pretty much fuel all the clones by holding you hostage. CBS may be on top now, but it can’t last. Either people wake up, people die off, or people grow up, but CBS can’t live forever like this… and they will meet a fate similar to NBC eventually. And I fear they won’t have a replacement formula for some time when it does happen.

But the numbers don’t lie, it takes 16 million people to give csi a 3.5 rating. The office gets a 4.0 with 9 million. Can you say: OLD PEOPLE?

  • tom

I actually though that last nights CSI was one of the best episodes they have ever aired. Many must have agreed because the ratings were up compared to previous episodes this season.

The show will never be the same without Gil Grissom but its still a great show.

  • tom

“But the numbers don’t lie, it takes 16 million people to give csi a 3.5 rating. The office gets a 4.0 with 9 million. Can you say: OLD PEOPLE?”

I will take 16 Million people anyday over 9 million people.

I dont care who is watching young, old, babies whatever, demo numbers do not interest me and I find conversations that constantly talk about demo numbers dull, boring and unimaginative.

    I can’t believe Gilly Christmas got a 3.2, lol.

Those repeat numbers for TVD are pretty good since it is the third time airing those episodes

  • Theoacme

Tom – unfortunately, the advertisers also seem to be dull, boring, and unimaginative, since they’re calling the tune…

…too bad advertisers from Super Bowls past aren’t reusing their ads on regular programming, instead of the dreck ads I see most of the time…

…mmm – Tabasco on my pizza

  • Mark D.

I watched my first episode of Fringe last night and now I’m hooked!

  • Pat

Leno wilts in the face of ANY competition. As long as there’s something on both of the other networks (and i don’t count a rerun of Private Practice) he tanks.

  • forg

Really awful ABC repeat numbers, they should have gone with Christmas specials or repeats of those. Seeing those numbers, makes the repeats of The Middle, Modern Family and Cougar Town quite okay, of course not as amazing as CBS repeats, but still fine given that they are just new shows with few eps and how ABC is over all performs bad in repeats

    Impressive SNL special numbers

  • http://dosomethingelse.tumblr.com/ J.R. Herbaugh

in the past few years, SNL doesn’t know what constitutes a one-off character versus one deserving recurring status

    few, or 27?

  • USAmerica1st

@Edward: what Tom said. If CSI was pulling 9M, they’d be singing the ‘cancellation song’ at CBS. CSI cast members come and go and some get killed off and It still pulls great numbers. And what’s up with the “old people” comment? With overall TV revenues declining the last few years, TV needs every viewer it can get.

  • Moxy

Why the bump for NBC’s late night lineup?
