Maybe Trauma fans will embrace Jay Leno at 11:35pm?   The post Leno scrambling seems to have netted Trauma fans more episodes, getting an order for four additional episodes and taking it up to a 20 episode season.

Law & Order: SVU got two additional episodes taking it up to 24 for the season.  Parks & Recreation also got an additional two episodes to take it up to 24.  Community got an order for an additional three episodes, stretching its season to 25 episodes.

Update: Law & Order also received three additional episodes bringing it up to 20 for the season.  The Office will also be adding additional episodes, stretching its 6th season to 25 episodes.

Glad about SVU and PR and Community. Trauma is a terrible show. But I guess NBC has to fill up the rest of this TV season. I doubt anyting other than SVU will be around next season unless the comedies pick up some momentum

NBC should have ordered more episodes of Heroes to give it a proper finale in case it gets canceled.

Is that any indication NBC is moving Trauma to a 10pm slot (where you expect such show to be at)?

Marcos, unless I missed something, no. NBC already announced its post Leno schedule and Trauma wasn’t at 10pm. But pushing the stuff they pushed to 10pm was bound to create some holes elsewhere in the schedule.

Ha ha ha ha ha! Trauma is so sucktastic, it should have been dead and gone months ago. NBC must just want to keep me amused. ;)

Joe I actually like the show but think it suffers from uncharismatic unrootable characters. I think if they recast or rid the show of a couple of them, it could be a really decent show. Not on the caliber of an ER but then what is.

Joe, Mercy already got its back nine pick up to get to 22 episodes for this season. I haven’t heard anything about additional episodes beyond that.

Great news for P&R, Community. Trauma seems like quite an expensive show, doesn’t it? And it keeps getting additional episodes instead of a cancellation notice. Strange.

YES TRAUMA! HUGE NEWS! Glad to hear it. Back in the fall I started watching Trauma and ignored Mercy, then when NBC started paying attention to the latter I had to check it out for myself. Frankly this move surprises me, as Mercy surely has more potential.

Isn’t 25 episodes for a new comedy kinda unheard of? Does this bode well on its renewal then? I’m talking about Community of course. I love the show and am stoked about this but I definitely wasn’t expecting it.

I don’t think 25 episodes is unheard of — certainly less unheard of than stripping a talk show Mon-Fri at 10pm and then getting rid of it in the middle of the season.

I wouldn’t read anything additional into show’s renewal prospects for next year as a result of this, but that’s just me.

I think this is an anomaly with 5 hours of primetime slots vaporizing for NBC. So a 25 episode order in these circumstances might not mean as much as Community fans are hoping… NBC just needs content. Surely 2 months ago they intended on cutting Trauma ASAP.

NBC liked Community and P&R so it’s not surprising. They’re also performing fairly steady in their hour (not great, but the 2.1-2.4 demo they average is decent) — so it’s not that surprising. With everything else sinking so horribly across the board they need to rely on what little success they have.

I’m sorry, but I tried to watch Parks and Recreation a number of times and could not stand to see more than about 10 minutes before I turned off the TV. I do not like Amy Poehler, and think the show to be awful. Community I can watch for about 15 minutes before turning off the TV. I try, I really do, but these shows are the equivalent of nails on a blackboard for me. The rest of the Thursday comedy lineup on NBC is fine.

Despite the fact that all 3 extra orders were announced at once I think we have two things going on here.

First Trauma was obviously renewed so as to fill Leno holes in the schedule. This gives NBC a few more weeks of original scripted programming at 9.

The orders for Community and Parks strike me as more a vote of confidence than anything else, as Thursday’s comedy block is essentially unchanged in the wake of Leno’s departure back to the Tonight Show.

The only way the comedy extensions wouldn’t be a vote of confidence is if NBC had been planning to burn off some back-to-back 100 Questions eps at 8pm and that fell through. Speaking of, I doubt we will see that show before summer, if at all.

Considering the filming schedule, the additional orders for SUV and L&O probably mean they’re going throw in a couple of craptastic episodes in there.

Looks like this is going to give more false hope to the Trauma fans. It’s addition episode order is only a move to fill a few more hours. And I’d say that the addition episodes of Parks and Community has more to do with the fact that NBC has no confidence in 100 Questions.

Good news for all these series’ and there fans however, seems more like a way to fill in open time slots as opposed to NBC renewing any of these shows. Mercy i feel would do a lot better following SVU, so for a new show in the * p.m slot its not so bad, guess everyone has to wait till May for information on renewals for on the bubble series.

Are NBC’s standards really that low that they’d pick up any of these shows for next season. The comedies aren’t bad(not great), SVU we already know will be there but Trauma. I really hope in those 20 shows NBC is ordering there are at least 10 that are airable. It may not be realistic but this whole lineup needs to be reworked.

Fantastic for Trauma. Superb show that was hurt and largely dismissed after a bad pilot and a few subsequent episodes. It clearly is not a “filler” show, not at the cost of production it has. Hopefully NBC will promote it heavily during the Olympics. I know that a few cast members will be in Vancouver doing just that.

Just thinking out loud here. Community looks very likely to get a second season order. Considering last Thursday it was the highest rated show on NBC both in viewers and 18-49 I think it’s pretty much a lock. So let say it gets another 25 episodes next year putting it at 50 total. The show is produced by Sony which 2 years ago decided to give FOX Til Death for a really low licensing fee so that they could produce enough episodes for syndication. Assuming Sony is still looking to have shows they can syndicate I could definitely see them lowering the licensing fee for Community if NBC decided they want to cancel it. I’m probably assuming too much in this scenario but i think there’s a really good chance Community lasts for at least a few more seasons.

@Soul Stryka The previews for the pilot of Trauma were horrible, and i was fully expecting to hate it & Mercy…which i still hate btw. But once you got past the pilot Trauma started growing on me….still waiting on that to happen w/ Mercy…only b/c there’s nothing else i’m interested in watching on a wednesday.

I agree that the cast of Mercy doesn’t feel right…maybe my opinion of it would be different if the cast was different.

Trauma i feel has a great cast, when NBC was into it’s big blow them up scenes you didn’t get to see them, but now that they’ve cut the production costs and are focusing more on the story the show has gotten markedly better.

I am aware the show is unlikely to get a second season, unless by some miracle the ratings improve. I know NBC just picked up the extra episodes as filler, but i’ll take more of Cliff Curtis as i can get him. I’m keeping my fingers crossed for better Trauma ratings.

I actually have started to like Trauma. Anastasia Griffith has been really good in her 1st lead role and IMO she far outshines Derek Luke who gets top billing. The Pilot was a little loud and over the top, but I think the show has started to find it’s footing and is focusing more on the characters than explosions. So, I’m happy for the now 20 episode season.

I’m wondering if the ordering of extra Trauma episodes is just stringing along the out-of-town crew (since everything else is produced locally, right?), while they really figure out what they’re going to do for any of their dramas/scheduling next season. Rather than move them all home, and then back if they do renew it, they’re just going to keep them busy while they figure it out.

I could be wrong, but I do sometimes wonder if that factors into the decision-making.

So glad for Community. Can’t put my finger on it, but there’s something about that show.

Yay for Community! It at least shows some freshness each episode, and I often laugh outloud at least once while watching it. P&R makes an effort and has some real talent on it, but feels like it falls short somehow.

    Bgun:
Day One is not even airing as a 4 hour miniseries. NBC is only airing the 2 hour Pilot that was shot before last year’s upfronts. There is still no airdate for it either.

I think NBC gave Trauma more episodes because their midseason schedule is really light and plus the show is shot on location in San Francisco and they didn’t want to risk losing the cast and crew to other jobs/pilots since Pilot season is coming up soon.

    Bgun,

Day One has been reduced to a 2hr movie/possible backdoor pilot.

Parenthood has the valuable post-Biggest Loser spot, which should propel it to at least marginal ratings success, if I had to venture a guess myself.

If Leno can get a high 1-low 2 after BL, I don’t see why Parenthood might not be able to do mid to high 2s. The audience seems to be fairly similar as well. I will go ahead and predict a season 2 before it even airs.

    Other Matt,

NBC already ordered extra chuck from their original order of 13. I think we’re expecting 19 episodes now.

I don’t think they can order any more just because there’s no more weeks to air it. Chuck should have new episodes every week from now til the end of the season except for the Olympics of course.

more Trauma is never a bad thing, but given that it’s only an additional four episodes, it’s a tad bittersweet.

If NBC actually gives Trauma a second season, then I may be able to offer them just a fraction of forgiveness for sending Leno back to 11:35.

“Trauma” has got to be the luckiest show in TV history. Or at least this season. Back in October, it was pretty much left for dead, and now it’s basically got a full-season order. Not bad for a show which is practically unwatchable.

Although Chris Moynihan and Jesse Alexander must feel like complete crap right now.

Riff Rafferty, what do you mean by “practically unwatchable?”. Trauma has gone in a different direction early on when they/the producers realized that they failed in the drama/personal relationship part of the show unlike Flash Forward or Melrose Place. And the viewers are hanging on…it gets 1.7-1.9 ratings wise (with 2.1-2.2 rating for the pilot).

Community is one of the best new shows of the season. Its got a great cast & fresh stories each week. The show beat 2 new episodes of 30 Rock last week & 30 Rock had bigger guests stars than Community. I think it’ll be renewed next season.

Parks & Rec is a million times better this season than the last. They finally started using the supporting cast which is what made it great. They will probably renew this show just because its in house.

Still wondering how Trauma is alive.

My husband and I really liked Trauma. It had some, but not all, of the feeling of early ER. Everytime NBC comes up with a good scripted drama, reality tv freaks, kill it. Any guesses as to why 30 Rock didn’t have a few more episodes ordered? This show lost 7 episodes due to the writers strike, seems odd that they wouldn’t use this an opportunity to get a few back.

I know that SNL Weekend Update Thursday aired for a while, meaning 30 Rock came back on air 4 weeks late. Maybe this is the reason? I’ve heard that they want to do another SNL Weekend Update Thursday for 3 episodes, perhaps once again it will be Weekend Update at 8:00, P&R at 8:30, The Office at 9:00 and Community at 9:30.

I have to agree with those people that have said Trauma has got better as the season moved along. The more time they spend dealing with the characters the better it has got. The problem early on was you couldn’t grab onto anything or anyone. No empathetic characters or development. That has changed.

I also totally disagree with changing Mercy’s cast. That show has gotten stronger as the season has moved on. James Van Der Beek is joining the cast next week. That actually might cause problems. The last few weeks including tonight’s episode have been very strong.

Unfortunately it may be tough for NBC to keep either one of them for next season based on the viewer numbers.

Without Leno at 10PM NBC is shaping to be a once again watchable network. Yes they have a long way to go and it is sad than Conan is leaving but the move is proving to have more pros than cons as a much higher numbers of shows now have greatly improved chances of renewal. This risk with was something was frankly unnecessary.

Trauma’s extension is clearly hole-plugging, that’s obvious. SVU’s extension is standard procedure.

But I think Community and Parks’ extensions bode well for their renewal prospects. I mean, they didn’t really need extensions in that it’s not like there was ever a chance of another show filling their slots until after the season is over. So this seems like a vote of confidence in both of them, and a vote of no confidence in 100 Questions (and rightfully so, the pilot is one of the unfunniest things known to humanity).

I do have a question about this piece though…

“The Office will also be adding additional episodes, stretching its 6th season to 25 episodes.”

I think The Office was renewed for this amount of episodes right from the start, I may be wrong though.

The additional episodes are not surprising only because NBC needs to fill the hour vacant by Leno. Which means all shows will last until May. However Trauma will be axed in May, after doing badly monday nights. I still think that both Parks and Community will be renewed. WHile both shows are bubble, I still think NBC will want to keep them both around for next season.

I am really hoping Mercy gets renewed, the show has potential. How could anyone who saw the pig episode not get at least a few good laughs. I know its all about the ratings but honestly do we need more reality TV. Take a stand…NO MORE SINGING…NO MORE DANCING….ENCOURAGING PEOPLE TO BE A**HOLES TO GET ON TV

If only NBC had kept Life just one more season. Damnit that show was working so wonderfully content wise, character wise, dialog wise, damn impatient nbc—you realize that had nbc just stuck with it on wednesday nights instead of mercy we would be looking at a possible off network usa run with it where it would prob do really well–stupid lack of foresight nbc–but why am i not suprised?

This is great news for Community and Parks and Rec—it really doesn’t matter what any of you guys say at this point a formal renewal for both shows (and in their current timeslots) has gotta be all but a done deal at this point.

Ditto for Chuck. (Who knows what’s gonna happen to Heroes–but i would bet money that NBC brings it back just so they can make it to 100 flat for weekend syndication purposes and also so that universal can make money out of having kept it alive these past couple of seasons.)

@ Matt – I would not say Community and P&R are locks for renewal at all. NBC has a bunch of new pilots coming; don’t know how good they are, but how you can get lower ratings than Parks is getting right now? That show is almost unwatchable at times.

NBC seems high on that new lawyer sitcom with Jerry O’Connell, who could use a hit after all the flops he’s had. (He’s got a hot wife though, so don’t feel too bad for him :)

Actually, Community is the best sit-com of the season, and Dan Harmon is a genius.
