Hardly a surprise at this point, for anyone following the Renew/Cancel index, but CBS has renewed How I Met Your Mother for a sixth season.

Note, Two and a Half Men and The Big Bang Theory got multi-year renewals in their last pick-ups and are already renewed for the 2010-2011 season.

can’t believe it has already been six years

  • Polar Bear

It hasn’t. By the end of the next season it will.

  • Brynna

yay!!! Can’t believe just a few years ago this show was on the bubble!

  • JPtheTVguy

All I can say is, it will be…

    wait for it…

    Legend…

…run and get your vintage glass milk bottles, because we’re all going on a field trip to the… DAIRY!!! :)

Good news, but I wish they’d make it “the Robin and Barney Show.” Ted is just a tool, and Lily and the man-child are getting a little bit tired. Still, happy to see another year of fun.

  • forg

Yay, surprised with the early announcement I thought CBS will announce it on May . :D

  • DuMont

    Completely deserved.

  • good grief

hey producers please end this show in season 6 or 7, please go out on top, do not drag it out further

  • Mega64

Obvious move, but still glad to see it confirmed.

Too bad CBS had to disappoint me with reruns tonight!

  • Jeff

Yay! Love this show. I hope it keeps going till at least 8 seasons.

  • Lurker

Let me guess, he’s really 72 and just adopted teenagers. He met his the mother two days earlier. ;)

  • Craig

I’m disappointed that Rachel Bilson didn’t turn out to be the mother. It’ll be tough to top her.

But I’m glad the show has been renewed.

  • Kyle

Please end the show next season!!! I still like the show but it’s getting a little too werid and stupid!!! I still find some of it funny but not as much as I used to!!!

  • D

    Cool! Love the show.

I have a question. Why do networks do early renewal for some shows and they wait to till the end to renewal towards the end of the season for the others?? (EX: NCIS is a top performer and it’s always renewed late)

  • Dan

So with this unsurprising renewal, the bubble comedies are

    Old Christine
    Gary Unmarried
    Accidentally on Purpose
    Rules of Engagement

Holy crap. I just saw my question and man it stuck.LOL

*stunk.* Forgive me, I can’t type today. Ugh.

D, for the obvious to be renewed shows, I’ve got to believe that the networks plan the announcements for maximum PR benefit (although lots are still clumped late in the spring, perhaps because the contract negotiations take extra time).

For shows on the bubble, the window between when the network makes up its mind, and when it has to reveal its entire fall schedule at its May upfront meeting can turn out to be pretty short.

  • Jimmy

I like this show — a lot — but this series hasn’t been nearly as funny as seasons past and I’m getting to the point where I wish they would just move forward with the mother plot.

  • RJ

HIMYM has gotten pretty boring lately. Just tell us the mother and end it already.

  • Trent

Pretty boring lately? Episode 100, which aired 2 weeks ago, was one of the best of the entire series.

  • http://blog.theboxofficejunkie.com Grady

    YESSSSSSSSSSSS

  • John

At some point you need Ted in a relationship with the mom so you can “move” the story without moving it. that’s the only way it can keep going. A lot of the “filler” eps (with the exception of 100) are getting brutal. If we’re at the 200th episode and the mom is not a character on the show there will be like 3 people watching.

  • Larryville Slim

As I’ve said before, and to second what John said, it’s time to introduce Ted’s wife (the “mother”), so that the two of them can have a significant relationship during the course of the series. For fans, it would be an enormous letdown, after waiting for YEARS, if the relationship with the mother is not a substantial part of the show.

@good grief (and anyone else wondering how long HIMYM will be on for)…

Carter Bays and Craig Thomas gave an interview recently where they answered that very question. They said that the plan was always, subject to yearly renewals, to end HIMYM in 2012 at the end of season 7.

So with today’s announcement that there will be a 6th season, I feel it’s very likely that seeing as there were only ever going to be 7 seasons, that next year’s pickup will be earlier to allow Bays and Thomas enough time to give HIMYM the finale that we all want… or allow enough space for the expected Barney Stinson spinoff, assuming NPH is up for that. Which would be legendary.

  • Diegotool

Great news!! Boring lately?? This season has been better, and i hope lasts until season 8 at least. It could improve even more!!

  • Brooke

@Larryville Slim, I agree. And I’m always shocked to find myself in the minority on entertainment websites where almost everyone else wants the show to end with him meeting the mom and saying, “And that, kids, is how I met your mother.” Which I think is a far too literal reading of the show’s title. Besides, after getting to know Ted for all these years, I want to know what kind of woman finally wins his heart. I care!

  • Ren

    Yay more delicious NPH!

  • BIG DADDY

    NPH is so underated…….

The man is just solid for the past 20 years.

  • leo

I wouldnt mind having at least 1 season with us knowing who the mom is … having him just meeting the mom and then ending right away would kind of suck.

  • Jason

That’s great that the show has gone this far and still going for many more years to come.

Its such a hilarious show :)

I can see it going for 9 seasons total…maybe 10 for the heck of it lol

Yeah, they are dragging the mother story on for forever. I love the episodes they make but some of them are just completely useless in explaining how Ted met his kids’ mother. I was hoping she would be Rachel Bilson too but I don’t mind as long as we get some episodes of Ted actually being with the mother and their wedding. Hoping to see a finale that ties all the loose ends ex. Lost, or British tv shows, and not something that’s cancelled due to poor ratings.

  • Jason

I was figuring out when he and the mother would be married and when they would have their first kid.

I would say they would get married by end of season 7.

As for the kids..we know that the future kids would have to be born in the early 2010′s…I think the first one (the girl as the actress who plays the future daughter is 2 years older) would be born by 2013 (by the end of season 8).

At first, I was thinking the daughter would be born by 2012 (season 7) but doesn’t look like it as Ted haven’t met the mother yet…I bet by the end of this season he will, hopefully.

  • 12916studios

Well, “Two and a Half Men” has turned into “Two and Three-Forths Men and a Woman.” So hopefully “How I Met Your Mother” will turn into “How I Met Your Mother, Dated Her, Married Her, and Then Knocked Her Up With You Kids.”

  • Dan

Though not announced, I think the following series are 100% good for renewals as well

    CSI
    CSI Miami
    CSI NY
    NCIS
    Criminal Minds
    The Mentalist

Ghost Whisperer and Medium are not 100% but I still think the two are leaning toward renewal, while Cold Case and Numb3rs will be cancelled.
