Of course American Idol lead Fox won the ratings night on Tuesday, but slipped a bit from last week. With new NCIS/NCIS:LA episodes, CBS edged NBC for second. ABC can’t wait until Lost returns, as its Tuesday woes continued.
American Idol was down 12% from last Tuesday, but its 9.0 adults 18-49 rating still easily carried Fox to the win for the night. Idol is down 4% overall in the adults 18-49 demo from its first 5 episodes last season. That’s pretty good, better than the 10% decline I expected.

A new episode of Human Target fell 6% from last week’s pilot repeat that followed Idol. Target’s real test will come next week, when it begins its regular 8pm Wednesday timeslot. Note that there was an Idol overrun into the 9pm hour, the final ratings will likely have an increase for Idol and a decrease for Target.

Moved early to accommodate a Lost repeat at 9, Scrubs was down 8% to a 1.2 rating and Better Off Ted was down 17% to a 1.0 rating. With Lost returning next week, ABC’s Tuesday embarrassments are likely at an end.

After repeats last week, NCIS was down 5% from its last new episode to a 4.1 rating, but NCIS:LA bounced way back, up 27%, to a 3.8 rating, just about its season average. For the zealots, NCIS viewer gap with American Idol of just over 4 million was as close as it ever has been.

NBC’s Biggest Loser was down 7% to a 3.8 rating. And The Jay Leno Show likely missed its last chance to win a broadcast ratings hour. Its 2.0 rating was up 5% vs. last week, but still fell short of a Good Wife repeat.

In Late-Night Local People Meters Monday night:

  • Conan O’Brien (0.9 rating  in 18-49 in local people meters with an encore telecast) tied CBS’s Late Show (0.9 rating with an encore telecast) in Nielsen’s 25 local markets with People Meters.
  • At 12:35 a.m., Jimmy Fallon (0.5 rating in 18-49 in local people meters with an encore telecast) tied CBS’s first-run Late Late Show (0.5 rating).

Definitions:

*Fast Affiliate Ratings: These first national ratings, including demographics, are available at approximately 11 AM (ET) the day after telecast, and are released to subscribing customers daily. These data, from the National People Meter sample, are strictly time-period information, based on the normal broadcast network feed, and include all programming on the affiliated stations, sometimes including network programming, sometimes not. The figures may include stations that did not air the entire network feed, as well as local news breaks or cutaways for local coverage or other programming. Fast Affiliate ratings are not as useful for live programs and are likely to differ significantly from the final results, because the data reflect normal broadcast feed patterns. For example, with a World Series game, Fast Affiliate Ratings would include whatever aired from 8-11PM on affiliates in the Pacific Time Zone, following the live football game, but not game coverage that begins at 5PM PT. The same would be true of Presidential debates as well as live award shows and breaking news reports.

Rating: Estimated percentage of the universe of TV households (or other specified group) tuned to a program in the average minute. Ratings are expressed as a percent.

Share (of Audience): The percent of households (or persons) using television who are tuned to a specific program, station or network in a specific area at a specific time. (See also, Rating, which represents tuning or viewing as a percent of the entire population being measured.)

Time Shifted ViewingProgram ratings for national sources are produced in three streams of data – Live, Live+Same Day (Live+SD) and Live+7 Day. Time shifted figures account for incremental viewing that takes place with DVRs which are currently in approximately 24.4% of all U.S. TV households. Live+Same Day (Live+SD) include viewing during the same broadcast day as the original telecast, with a cut-off of 3:00AM local time when meters transmit daily viewing to Nielsen for processing. Live+7 Day ratings include incremental viewing that takes place during the 7 days following a telecast.

UKD, there was some Idol overrun too, so Human Target will probably go even lower in the finals.

I am starting to think the fall line-up will look something like this:

    Mondays
8:00pm – Life Unexpected (I do not see how OTH can make it another season)
9:00pm – New Drama (Nashville, the Brad Paisley produced series about country music, would do well espicially with guest stars.

UNLESS LIFE UNEXPECTED CONTINUES TO FALL INSTEAD OF GROW. THEN GOSSIP GIRL WILL LEAD THE NIGHT AND A NEW DRAMA WILL FOLLOW THAT.

    Tuesdays
    8:00pm – 90210
9:00pm – NEW DRAMA (possibly the Welling drama “Cheer” or the Medical school drama

    Wednesdays
    8:00 – ANTM
9:00 – Gossip Girl (UNLESS LUX FAILS THEN GOSSIP GIRL WILL OPEN MONDAYS AND A NEW DRAMA WILL BE LAUNCHED HERE.

The CW SHOULD also have a 8 episode drama ready for wednesdays while ANTM IS on break.

    Thursdays
    8:00 – Vampire Diaries
    9:00 – Supernatural

    Fridays
    8:00 Smallville
9:00 New Drama (Plymoth Rock, which is a series about A Group of youung kids who get on a space ship to go save the human race, kind of a sci fy show.

GLAD TO SEE AMERICAN IDOL SLIPPING!!! GREAT TO SEE NCIS: LA UP A BIT.

  • j

IIRC, Human Target isn’t even getting the Idol retention that Fringe & Lie to Me got. And look at their #’s now. Though maybe I’m wrong. Still, Glee leaving with a whole half a point higher than this post-Idol show is good.

Apparently NCIS2 kicked off an interesting storyline.

RIP Better off Ted. I was one of a few that actually liked the show.

I’m hoping Human Target does better since it’s been moved around quite a bit and now will stay on Wednesdays.

  • Tom

The only surprising thing was that the CW repeats were up a couple ticks from last week. Did CW get pre-empted by basketball somewhere?

Still waiting to see how Human Target does at 8pm one of these weeks. Slightly under 3.0, making it a wash for direct LtM/Fringe comparisons?

I’ve seen Human Target, its not as terrible as it’s panned out to be, but it isn’t exactly the type of thing I’d regularly tune into either. it’s ratings woes aren’t entirely it’s fault as FOX has aired it in how many different time slots now and it still hasn’t premiered in it’s official time period. Still anything with an IDOL lead in and IDOL overrun should be getting some mileage right?

Maybe this is a naive notion, but has ABC basically poisoned Better Off Ted by always sticking it behind Scrubs? Isn’t the :30 show basically capped at the audience size of the :00 show? Scrubs has never had stellar ratings and Better Off Ted seems to be limited in audience to people who watched Scrubs in the first half of the hour.

Better Off Ted seems doomed for cancellation. It’s a damned shame if you ask me. It’s one of the funniest shows I’ve ever seen.

  • Joltman

I have two ABC stations on my cable (WHTM from Harrisburg, PA and WMAR from Baltimore) and neither of them aired Scrubs and Better Off Ted at 8! One of them showed some Ford documentary and aired Scrubs and BOT at 1AM, the other aired St. Jude’s: A Place for Hope and didn’t even schedule Scrubs and BOT.

I’m shocked a Lost repeat in prep for the show returning didn’t do a bit better but oh well. But wow NCIS is a monster. 20 million viewers? And Leno got a 2.0 with that lead in.

It’s funny how Human Target on Fox at a 3.2 demo considered crappolla on Fox as it probably would on CBS yet on ABC or NBC it would be a whopping success.

“It’s funny how Human Target on Fox at a 3.2 demo considered crappolla on Fox as it probably would on CBS yet on ABC or NBC it would be a whopping success.”

No. It’s not because it’s Fox. Fox has lower-rated shows that are considered successes. It’s because of the lead-in. If a show gets only about a third of its lead-in, =not good.

  • Dario

Next week Lost will have 10 mil. and 4.0 ratings…

I also think Better Off Ted is funny, but this show appears dead in the water.

I am not into the NCIS shows, a better alternative for Tuesday is Southland on TNT. Not as gritty as the Shield, but, still a good cop show. Give it a try.

I didn’t realize The Good Wife was a repeat, I assumed CBS would come with all new episodes. Solid as usual for the naval 1-2 punch; hell of a rebound for LA, though still surprisingly old skewing. It’s doing what The Mentalist did last year, and LA’s fans are probably hoping CBS doesn’t move it like they moved a certain Thursday 10 pm show.
Idol was okay as far as talent goes, but they really need to consider who they ask to come guest judge. Avril Lavigne was entirely useless. Either way they will recover tonight, up against nothing. If NCIS somehow builds off of this season next year there could be a couple of days where Idol is second in viewership.

  • tdot

I think the LOST premiere will pull in a lot of its past viewers just cus it is the final season…I’m thinking a 5.6

@ John: not necessarily. Retention isn’t everything. For example, I don’t watch Scrubs but I tune in for BOT.

Bottom line, if people really want to watch a show, they’ll watch it.

I still hope that ABC will air the remaining 2 episodes on a Wednesday (preferably post-Olympics) so BOT will maaaaaybe have a shot at a 3rd season of 13 episodes, but I’m not holding my breath.

I am looking forward to Robert’s prediction for the Lost premiere.

When he was predicting <Chuck, he said 5.2 million and a 2.0 demo. It ended up getting 7.5 and a 2.9.

    For V, he said 9.3 million and a 3.2. It ended up getting 14.3 and a 5.2.

So, statistically, if I pad Robert’s Lost prediction with 49% in viewers and 54% in the demo, I will get the real ratings.

I am going to predict that Robert will predict 9.3 and a 4.4. Now, I will pad that to get 13.9 million and a 6.8 demo, something that it has not had since season 3.

Voila! Lost is going to finish as ABC’s #1 highest-rated show.

    Yay!

Human Target is a goner! As for Ted it is one of the best comedies around and it fails. So much better than Gary, Christine, 2 and a half Men and Scrubs. It would have been better on Cable. At least it would have had a better chance.

Human Target and NCIS:LA would have about the same audience. Both are mainly light cop/spy type shows. I like both. Target needs to settle down into a steady time period. I didn’t even know it was on yesterday until I checked.

Wow both Idol and Human Target are really dropping in numbers, suppose tonight will add to it, glad human target is failing, not a really strong show, a lot of action not the greatest dialogue. Also helps out Fringe and Lie To Me’s chances of renewal. Considering how well both Fringe and Lie TO Me did behind Idol, I believe both seres never got below a 4.0 when Idol was the lead in, I suppose have to wait and see what HT does without Idol as the lead in.

Next week’s ratings are going to be very important for ABC obviously, and also for The Eye to see what kind of bite Lost takes out of LA’s demo (and AI out of CM’s demo).

Despite it’s sorry numbers all season long will we ever get to see the remaining two episodes of BOT (I’m not even considering a third season like a lot of delusional people still see as a possibility)?

Phil, one thing I can tell you about the Human Target ratings to this point. They mean almost nothing.

What will matter are the ratings in its regular 8pm Wednesday slot starting next week. After we see a week or two of those numbers, then we can get a gauge of the future of the show. Until then, its just noise.

Yup. What most people have been referring to the massive lead-in of American Idol, and significant dropoff within the hour for Human Target. That 3.2 is actually a 3.7 dropping to a 2.7 in the second half. Not good.

Actually is Human Target held a 2.7 that wouldn’t be completely awful right? Can we get the official half hour breakdown?

OK. So if “Lost” premiere isn’t against “American Idol”, then I’m going to rise my prediction: 13.2 million viewers and 6.1 demo 18-49. Hell YEAH!

Human Target half hour A18-49 ratings, 3.7/2.7.

First half hour likely to be restated downward in the final ratings.

    CWwatch2,
You’re insane if you think CW will drop OTH or Gossip Girl. Both perform well in the demos CW targets. It would make no sense. I personally can’t stand either of them, but from a business perspective they’d be bigger morons than I suspect they are. ;)

    CW –
MP will be dumped. LUX will be renewed unless it crashes in the Spring. SPN should/may be shipped off to Fridays w/ Smallville (both have stable male audiences and work well together. They’ll likely launch new shows on T/W or Th and will greenlight some cheap reality show to fill in the Top Model cycle gaps.

CW doesn’t have the resources to launch 4 new dramas in the fall. MP has taught them that name recognition doesn’t create a hit and with everything dipping across the board they’re gonna be conservative with the schedule and probably focus on stability rather than being aggressive. Mark my words. Here’s more likely what will happen…

    M – OTH/LUX
    T – GG/90210
    W – ANTM/New Series
    T – TVD/New Series
    F – Smallville/SPN

    * 1 Drama to debut at midseason and share a slot on M/T/W (much like they are doing right now with GG/OTH/LUX.

    FOX —
Human Target is bottoming out. If this is how it does retention-wise FOX will surely dump it. Glee was pulling better demos without any of that lead-in support and when it returns in April it will be the final nail in HT’s coffin. It’s only going to get worse when it moves to 8pm…

    CBS –
Continues to stand strong. Even a GW repeat won the hour. Bravo.

    ABC —
Needs to develop a new drama to replace LOST. V/FF aren’t going to cut it.

    NBC —
Still don’t understand why NBC doesn’t split TBL across two nights. Seems that demo/viewer lead-in would be mighty helpful in providing two strong lead-ins as opposed to just one. With all their trouble you’d think they would try this… Sure it seems drastic, but isn’t that pretty much how they operate these days?

Here’s hoping Parenthood is A) Good and B) A ratings success.

It will be a test to see how Human Target performs before Idol but my guess is probably around the same as Lie to Me, so it has a pretty good chance of being renewed. Its still early numbers wise but it seems like a series that FOX could stick with.

    Bill,
While it’s hard to factor in the renewal chances — the large dip in the half hour and the large loss of lead-in does give us a strong indication that it’s not likely to set the 8pm timeslot on fire when it is lacking such support. If it pulled 2.7+ demos that might be something, but it’s a safe bet that it’s going to drop — and drop — and drop. ;)

mayorofsmpleton, I typically don’t try and predict future ratings, particularly in a different time slot, so I will just wait and see how HT does next Wednesday. However, I am all too willing to predict show futures based on past ratings. But until HT moves to Wednesday, I think its past ratings are not meaningful.

I have a feeling Human Target’s future will be determined by whether or not 24 has another season unless it completely bombs soon. Say what you want about retention but I don’t think HT is a show that many AI viewers would enjoy. We’ll see what happens once it settles in its timeslot though.

I don’t see where a lead-in should matter that much. I can understand when you had to get up out of your chair and go switch the TV channel dial (yes I’m showing my age here) but now with remotes who actually bothers with what a lead in is or the show after the show you’re watching? For me, I have the shows I’m interested in picked out and I only watch those.

I know the ratings are horrible but I actually like the new scrubs. The first few episodes were cringe worthy but the new cast really got into a groove and find the show enjoyable now, I DVR every week and try to watch it later on Tuesday night. I’ll be sad when it goes.

Human Target will be fine…why the pessimism? It’s had 3 different timeslots for it’s 1st 3 episodes so I can understand why some viewers may have gotten lost when it was airing. It only has 9 more episodes left this season.

The TVBTN guys have a point on Human Target. We don’t know how it will fare on its own yet and THAT is the acid test for its survival.

I can understand why some are crowing though, given it does have poor retention out of American Idol. But it premiered on a Sunday to decent ratings and now it’s gotten a good look from a very big audience. We’ll see if they follow it or not.

I do think it there is enough to make the suits at FOX and WB uncomfortable. FOX was VERY high on this show when they screened the pilot, they were very enthusiastic, and besides Glee this is their premiere new show of the season. They don’t want it to tank. But it doesn’t look like a big hit so far. For a new show with a lot of fanfare, that’s a problem.

Too bad about Better off Ted, it really is one of the best shows on television. However, its humor is exceptionally esoteric, which, along with its absolute terrible marketing is why the numbers are down.

I expect it to generate a quasi Arrested Development like cult following in about three years. Unfortunately, smart, witty sitcoms very rarely make it in the US where the sex jokes have become the norm. I’ve gone on record saying that had Frasier been piloted this year, it would have failed.

The quality and intelligence of television has drastically fallen to the point that many shows are embarrassing and incredibly formulaic and fungible.

I really hope Better off Ted is given one more shot on a better night, with better marketing, and a better overall strategy to generate interest and loyalty. However, I do accept its likely demise, despite my best efforts to save the show. For a major corporation, ABC does a very poor job of branding their product, and it has truly started to show and catch up with them.

I like the new Scrubs. I’ve watched every Scrubs episode since the beginning, 9 years ago… It’s not “what it was”, and the show might be “long in the tooth” but it’s still funnier than most other sitcoms. John C. McGinley’s “Dr Cox” character has the funniest lines on TV.

Better Off Ted is too inconsistent for me… when I watch, I often do LOL at several of the jokes, but the stuff in between the jokes bores me.

Better off Ted is more than certain to be axed, yet fans believe that a move to wednesday could be better so ABC could always test the series at 8:00 Wednesdays. ABC has 2 remaining BOT episodes as well as 2 remaining Scrubs episodes. Instead of Modern Family repeats, ABC could air the last eps in the 8pm slot in March. Both Scrubs and Ted’s renewals last May were a shock. Scrubs was set to end and Ted didnt do that great airing after it. Yet ABC had no other comedy series so both were renewed. Now ABC has The Middle, Modern Family, and Cougar Town all renewed for 2010-2011 so Scrubs and Ted seem expendable. In December, my guess would have been that at least 1 of the duo would see additional episodes ordered but both seem to be done.

Its likely the two series will burn off their eps Wed at 8 in March in place of Modern Family repeats. Or maybe in an hour long block in another slot.

“The quality and intelligence of television has drastically fallen to the point that many shows are embarrassing and incredibly formulaic and fungible.”

Television, books, movies, music… the formula for success is to appeal to the lowest common denominator. If anything is truly popular in this country anymore – bestselling novels, platinum albums, blockbuster movies, TV shows with more than about a 5 demo – I try to avoid it on principle, as it’s basically guaranteed to be crap. It’s gotten to the point where I’ve bought a region-free DVD player, just so I can watch box sets of reasonably decent (foreign) television – Sea Patrol (AU), Rescue:Special Ops (AU), Corner Gas (CA), the UK productions of Robin Hood and Merlin… hell, I’ve started buying *anime* just so I have something to watch that doesn’t insult my intelligence or make me cringe.

I long for the good old days when “Married With Children” was the most appalling programming on network television, and MTV still played nothing but music videos…

…here is a fantasy network schedule – MyTV Network – “Get Your Zwork Yin”: tonight!

8:00 – The Josshouse – hosted by Joss’ Biggest Fan, sixty minutes of fan Flashes and doll flashes, all honouring Joss Whedon, the best thing to happen to TV since the Bass-O-Matic ’75…

9:00 – Pish-Posh – Pisher hosts a half hour of snarky reasons why you should get on Santa’s naughty list now, and hate Castle, Glee, Chuck, TBBT, and more!

9:30 – Extreme Makeover: TV Edition – revamping TV networks, one night at a time. This week, Garry Marshall and Candace Bergen try to revamp the CW’s Tuesday night schedule without Melrose Place…

10:00 – Clutch Cargo / Worker & Parasite Show – two of the worst cartoons in television history (the Gene Deitch Tom and Jerry cartoons were theatrically released, so don’t count here), hosted by the TV star from the worst show in FOX history, Brad Garrett.

10:30 – The SeiGordman Group – Bill and Robert, with three rotating panelists, review everything Nielsen. Today’s rotation includes Julia, themayorofsimpleton, and George Segal, and covers Nielsen’s 339th network server failure…

Agree with the 10/10 for the Season 5 Lost finale but I still think it wasn’t quite as good as the ones for S4 and S5. But it did leave the best cliffhanger and chance for absolute chaos…which is what I expect Season 6 to be from start to finish.

I honestly don’t know what I am going to do when this show is over. Never has anything completely captivated and puzzled me as much as Lost has.

Can someone tell me what the last two digits after the first two digits means? Like for NCIS on some episode guide site they say that NCIS got 20.15 million viewers, but what does that “15″ after the “20″ million means?
Anyways, NCIS, again, good job and keep it up, continue to make your fans proud; oh, and NCIS had a really good plot and storyline last night, one of the best episodes ever!!! Tiva and NCIS ROCKSSSSSSSS!!
    :) :)

the Josshouse would be a big hit,
but man, no one is going to watch pish posh.

Wait, there were some real on-air shows.
AI continues to roll on (and I remain clueless as to why).
    NCSI also draws a crowd.
Look at all those people tuning in.

Of course, Bill is right, we need to let Human Target settle into it’s new time before we judge, but I got a bad feeling about it.

I have to agree with Nemo, that TV seems to cater to the lowest common denominator. I, too, find little I feel comfortable watching…especially the crime dramas. I like a mystery or who-done-it as much as the next person, but am weary of the grotesque or shocking openings, the sex strewn dialogue that has little to do with the story, sick story lines that appear ‘acceptable’ simply because they are after the ‘bad guy’. Women and children are most often the victims with appaling crime facts spewed as though they were reciting the phone book. I don’t need garbage in my home, so why should I invite it via the television?

I hope ABC will still air the remaining eps of Scrubs and Ted. Sad to see both shows with ratings like this :(

What will it take to get people to watch Better off Ted? The only show that has more laugh out loud moments is 30 Rock. Why not lead off Wednesdays with Modern Family (first run), followed by the Middle, Cougar Town, and then BOT?

Thank you ABC, for keeping it on this long. But you have not PROMOTED it, but buried it. Sad…

The CW picked up two pilots – Nikita and The Wyoming Project — Nikita is the same producers — McG and Peter Johnson — as Human Target (and they also had producing credits on Supernatural)

jimmcaff: I don’t think ABC will put Modern Family to lead off the night after it performed reasonably well against AI two weeks back.

In fairness to ABC, they gave the post Rose Bowl slot to Ted this year and it received a 1.7 only after a huge lead in , I don’t think even placing it on Wednesdays would produce better results. But of course I hope ABC would still try air the last two episodes just to see how it performs

Like for NCIS on some episode guide site they say that NCIS got 20.15 million viewers, but what does that “15? after the “20? million means?

That means there were 20,150,000 viewers. It’s just shorter than saying 20 million 150 thousand.

20,150,000 makes it seem much more impressive. They shouldn’t abbreviate it. :)

NCIS’ 20 million total viewers number is not impressive, not when its A18-49 ratings is in the low 4s. It must be really frustrating for CBS. Millions are watching NCIS for free. Needless to say, AI is still a monster. Biggest Loser is impressive. Human Target is weak after the humongous lead-in. I like the show. It’s pretty much all action from start to finish, with just enough plot to thread an intriguing story. It’s good vege-out entertainment.

It is old skewing, i think even by CBS standards.

It is shocking how well The Good Wife does in repeats. Usually a show with a continuing storyline does lousy in repeats(Desperate Housewives and Grey’s Anatomy always do lousy in repeats).

The Good Wife has alot of buzz surrounding it with Julianne Marguiles winning a Golden Globe and SAG Award and it seems that new people are catching the repeats.

I predict that the next new episode of The Good Wife will be its highest rated episode to date

20 Million Viewers is most definatley impressive today, especially when there are only two shows that can do it(NCIS and AI).

The quality and intelligence of television has drastically fallen to the point that many shows are embarrassing and incredibly formulaic and fungible.

Travis Yanan posted the final ratings for this night here: http://pifeedback.com/eve/forums?a=tpc&s=32410241&f=63310451&m=550103172&r=855103172#855103172

Human Target’s final is 3.1 and 9.26 million viewers, so it’s down 9-10% instead of 6%. American Idol’s final is unchanged, 9.0, 24.45 million viewers. The two NCIS shows also lost 0.1 points in the 18-49 demo. That’s about it.

I will be glad when Lost returns next week and I have something worth watching as a live viewer for the entire 8pm. hour. Sorry but NCIS and Idol are definitely not good enough to make me want to sit through 20 minutes of commercials as a live viewer!

I don’t know how NBC, ABC, and CW havn’t figured out that its best for them to just clear out of the Tuesday 8:00 timeslot. You’ve got two of the highest rated TV shows today in that slot and there’s no chance your going to push them away. Why would anybody want to screw themslves over by putting there shows in there?

Oh well once Simon leaves Idol the show will lose a few million veiwers I think. NCIS is so much better.
