This is definitely the last season of ABC’s Ugly Betty.  Today, ABC and the production team made the following statement.  At least fans will get their closure!

“We’ve mutually come to the difficult decision to make this Ugly Betty’s final season, and are announcing now as we want to allow the show ample time to write a satisfying conclusion. We are extremely proud of this groundbreaking series, and felt it was important to give the fans a proper farewell.”

This is no surprise to anyone who has been following the ratings, but there was some question over whether ABC might want to squeeze additional episodes out of it for purposes of syndication. But, that question has now been answered.

Useless petition to save show in 3….2….1….

  • Brad

    Yay for Castle!

  • Brad

i.e. better shot of it getting a Renewal.

  • Nerwen Aldarion

    Anyone here surprised? Anyone?

  • GEORGE 11

    :(

  • Smallville #1 Fan

wow.. I’m really sorry to UGLY BETTY fans..!

  • Ali

I think it’s about time it ends to be honest. Ending it on a high is way better than dragging it for far longer than it should and I am saying this as a big fan of the show.

  • Zachary

Really Ugly? I figured Deep End woulda went before it..but hey..

  • Tar

maybe they’ll move it back to friday and put Happy Town in its place after a few weeks?

  • Rebecca

Please note Brad’s opinions do not necessarily reflect the opinions of all Castle fans.

  • http://tvbythenumbers.com Robert Seidman

MC, normally this would inspire mocking along the lines of:

might the CW save Ugly Betty?
Ugly Bettyis a perfect fit for ABC Family
Why wouldn’t DirectTV save Ugly Betty?
Comcast needs a Friday Night Lights like Direct TV

But with the whole unified statement and closure, it sounds like the producers are ready to end it and aren’t looking to take it to another network.

  • Brad

Maybe the early wrap up will meet Happy Town starts after its demise?

  • Brad

Rebecaa, one less scripted, 1 hour drama means a better shot for Castle to get renewed.

  • Nerwen Aldarion

I am sorry for Ugly Betty fans but they had to see the end coming, the ratings just weren’t there

  • greysfan

Yay for Castle as it means its more likely for renewal. However i love Ugly Betty and it will be a real shame to see such a great series leaving us. :(

  • i’m in agreeance with ali. i adore the show and i’m okay with it leaving on such a creative surge. i know it still has the juice to go on another season or so, but at least the producers got enough time to write a series finale.

  • Kara

Not surprising, and not all that disappointing. While they are on a bit of an upswing now, the producers/writers completely biffed the previous two seasons. They were terrible. The good work now is kind of a day late and a dollar short.

But at least they have time to wrap things up. I do love the cast of this show and I hope they find new projects soon.

  • Tar

they also reduced season 4 to 20 episodes

  • Rebecca

I know, Brad. But its just bad karma to celebrate at another show’s demise.

  • Dan

No surprise, the move didnt help but its good that ABC is making the decision now to end the series rather than wait. Now that this is confirmed we have the certain renewals and cancellations

    Renewals
    Desperate Housewives
    Grey’s Anatomy
    Brothers & Sisters
    Private Practice
    Extreme Makeover
    DWTS

    Cancellations
    Hank
    Eastwick
    Lost
    Ugly Betty

    Bubble
    Castle (leaning toward renewal)
    The Forgotten leaning toward cancellation)
    Flashforward (leaning toward cancellation)
Better Off Ted (leaning toward cancellation)
    Scrubs (leaning toward cancellation)
    V (50/50)

  • Brad

Not really. 4 seasons is pretty darn good for any show nowadays. It sucks for fans, but as ratings show, not many were still watching.

  • Emily N

I’m an Ugly Betty fan and am not surprised by this news. The ratings just weren’t there, even after ABC moved it to Wednesdays at 10pm. I’m glad they announced it in time to create a proper ending to the series.

  • Dan

Robert – I agree, I dont think Ugly Betty would be saved at this point. Its in its fouth year and has syndication so theres no point in hope for another network to pick it up. Atleast it will get a proper finale.

  • http://mediaspotlight.wordpress.com Mark

This is great news. I watch every week, but the idea of closure is hardly bad news. It’s run its course so yeah!!!

  • goodridd

What about this show was groundbreaking? I’m not trying to be a jerk or anything, I’m genuinely curious. I’ve only ever seen a few minutes here or there, so I wouldn’t know. Terms like “groundbreaking” tend to pique my interest.

  • http://abc.com Dev

Another bullshit move by ABC. Just like Pushing Daisies, and Eastwick, and…ya know, all the GOOD shows.

  • Tar

nothing groundbreaking about Ugly Betty it’s no gem like “Being Erica”

  • Meg

Too bad. ABC seemed to put some good marketing muscle behind it originally and then in the 2nd year just sort of left it alone on its own to fend for itself.

Maybe all these cast members and the production staff who had to uproot themselves last year from LA and move to NYC, can trade houses with Conan’s staff that made the opposite move.

  • Andrew

I have a question about syndication… is there any reason that a show has to have a certain number of episodes to be sold into syndication, or is it just a general goal? I’ve never quite understood the specifics behind syndication and its benefits.

    Thanks for the info :)

  • Dan

ABC liked the series so thats why they made the announcement now rather than May. The series moving to Wed at 10 atleast made it seem the show could continue, but inevitably the series was likely to end all along. It seems ABC cant catch a break for airing series 10pm wed.

  • http://tvbythenumbers.com Robert Seidman

LOL at “The Forgotten is a bubble show”

  • Tar

well it could pull a “Dollhouse”

  • http://tvbythenumbers.com Robert Seidman

Andrew, in syndicated deals some stations like to “strip” episodes (run them every day Monday-Friday at the same time). 100 episodes seems to be the commonly discussed standard for having enough episodes to strip.

  • http://tvbythenumbers.com Bill Gorman

Dan, “ABC liked the series so thats why they made the announcement now rather than May”

C’mon, ABC doesn’t “like” TV series in any sense other than the profits they produce. You don’t actually believe the public blather that comes out of McPherson’s mouth do you? There are a lot of reasons ABC might have chosen to announce this now, some dollars and sense related, some softer “image” related, but “liking” the series has nothing to do with it.

  • Alan

I’m disappointed, because I do feel that Betty is unique in its combination of extremely funny sharp humor with heart and warmth, especially with regards to accepting people on the “outside” (ugly people, gay people, etc).

I’ll always be proud of this show but I’m not bitter it’s ending.

However, if there IS a silver lining, I’m very glad that ABC is giving Betty advance warning and not cancelling it abruptly. There’s nothing crueler than a network cancelling a fairly long-running show without any advance notice.

This will allow Betty to wrap everything up nicely.

  • Frank

Hey ABC, how about putting on The Conan Show at 10:00 PM each night. Might save you some money…………..

  • bob

Dev, u need to chill. all those shows u just listed all bombed in ratings. They werent even close. so dont blame ABC for cancelling shows that dont pick up viewers.

  • Alan

Bill, I’m not sure if I agree with your comments above. Networks have every right to cancel a show abruptly without warning (and they do this frequently).

I know networks are about $$$$$, but you don’t think that networks give this type of advance warning more to shows that they support? ABC has no obligation to keep this show around for 4 more months with the horrific ratings it is generating.

I’m not defending ABC, but what show producers want more than anything is advance notice if they are going to be cancelled, and ABC could have pulled the plug effective tonight, couldn’t they? But they chose not too.

I mean, look at 30 Rock, you don’t think NBC kept it around despite it’s horrific awful first season ratings at least in part because they “liked” it?

  • Lisa

I love the show, but the ratings were sliding while it was still on Thursday night. The fact that it even got a try on Wed. was a big deal. Viewers didn’t show up, so… there you are. I’m glad they’ll get a chance to wrap it up properly, and I hope the show goes into syndication on a channel I get.

Even as a fan, based on the ratings, I would have cancelled it.

  • Nightstar

I will give the production company and ABC credit, they are giving it a chance to wrap the show up in a way that brings closure. Would that more seasoned (3 years or longer on the air) shows did this when the ratings have tanked and chances are diminishing that it will be back. I’m sure the Ugly Betty fans are not happy, but the ratings simply don’t justify it and the mutual agreement statement, if sincere (always the chance it is PR spin), tells me the show is coming to an end. Good luck to the folks who make the show, I hope you come up with a great send-off.

  • http://tvbythenumbers.com Bill Gorman

Alan, networks have every right to do whatever they want, but TV shows are not people, they are a basket of discounted income streams, networks do not “like” or “dislike” them for any reason other than their income potential.

    To your specific points:
    - Show producers would like their shows to be renewed, not canceled.
    - If their shows are certain to be canceled, I’m sure producers would rather hear sooner than later for lots of reasons.
    - Sure ABC could have pulled the plug tonight, but for business reasons they chose not to, not because they “like” the show.
    - 30 Rock is not “liked”. There are lots of possible reasons not having to do with “like” why it was kept around. NBC may have guessed it able to increase its ratings, or that they appreciated the awards for PR purposes, or that its ratings behind The Office were adequate considering the awards, or that they didn’t have anything better to replace it with, or a million other actual business reasons.

  • JustTunedIn

I really appreciate that they announce this cancellation early rather than the “it-just-doesn’t-show-up-on-the-schedule” route. Although I’m not a fan, I like the show, and wish other cancelled shows that I’ve like had been given as nice an adieu.

  • starmud

well, at least ABC is giving the show a proper send off. its gotten a better time slot; time to have the story end.

to be honest; with the way the story has been progressing the past few weeks i’ve been expecting something to give.

ABC as a whole needs some hit shows next season, the mid season shows will most likely flop… lost is gone, ugly betty was once upon a time one of the networks largest show names… brothers and sisters seems to be headed towards a very fast death… story is stagnating; atleast two major characters leaving… no more filler comedies (scrubs/ted). the network is going to have a lot of holes in their schedule.

  • Rob R

It had a good run and was a ratings and creative success for a long time. I sort of compare it to one of my old NBC favorites: “Ed”. It ran 4 years, got medium ratings and got nice notices from critics, but went off the air with an episode that provides closure for characters that viewers have come to love. Classy move by ABC to give such advanced notice.

  • Nelly

I was a big fan of ugly betty and this really sucks :( …they should just cancel the awful flashforward and put it back in its timeslot…they shud never have changed it,betty was a really special show… :(

  • U.V.

Amazing how one has to defend feeling sad at the demise of a show they liked a lot.

This internet thing — rough stuff.

I’ll miss Ugly Betty. Even when the quality dipped, it was still something unique to look at. ABC is worth defending for taking chances on unique product over the past several years, unlike CBS and its overcrowded stable of procedurals, and NBC with its…well I’m not sure what NBC has anymore…

  • ryan

this was Ugly Betty’s best season….kinda dissapointed.

  • rob

At least there will be closure for the fans of the show. This was totally expected. It lasted 4 seasons and has enough episodes for syndication.

  • Tks

Keep it up abc and you’ll be like CBS another network I don’t watch. I will miss betty.

  • George

    Robert

Isn’t the whole 5 season/100 episode theory when it comes to syndication kind of a thing of the past? With the number of cable channels now it seems like some upp-tier cable channels are willing to pick up shows that have produced 70-80 episodes. That’s another reason I was waiting for this announcement to come any day now…

  • David

Well it couldn’t last forever. It had a good run.

  • Sheldon

Shame, sorry Ugly Betty fans :(

  • http://tvbythenumbers.com Robert Seidman

George: I don’t think it’s purely in the past. can you give me an example of a show that got a deal to be stripped Mon-Fri with only 70-80 episodes that wasn’t still in production of new episodes at the time the deal was struck?

  • rob

77 episodes of Ugly Betty have aired, and theres still 8 more. So Ugly Betty will have 85 episodes total. Still very good.

  • Tommy

Sitcoms seem to be the only shows that get syndication deals when they have less than 100 episodes. Still Standing had 88 episodes I believe and got a syndication deal on Lifetime, but it didn’t stay on Lifetime for very long.

  • Fennerbender

    (@ Robert) Family Guy?

  • Fennerbender

Didn’t its syndicated success bring Family Guy back into production?

  • Tommy

Fennerbender, Family Guy is the exception to the rule. It’s one of the extremely few shows to get revived after being canceled due to DVD sales and syndication success.

  • jacky

    Dang nielsen ratings =/

  • Dryr

Castle has been getting the same ratings as 24 for the last couple weeks, I doubt it’s still getting canned, if it was at all.

  • Fennerbender

Wasn’t it “the exception to the rule” that Robert was looking for?

  • Dee

To everyone saying, “…at least the fans will have some closure…” I say don’t count on it just because Stephen McPherson says so now. ABC could still pre-empt the final episodes…or show them out of order…or skip one or more…or not show them in the United States.

  • tom

stop it… i hate castle fans now like i hated moonlight fans. stop your freaking whining especially since it’s definitely coming back next season. just shut the hell up and enjoy the stupid show. this has nothing to do with castle. castle is coming back no matter what happens to betty. sad for betty fans but a 4 year run is cool. i think the real culprit is an old boss of mine that was ep’ing betty then got fired. but that might be my own personal dislike for the guy. but that guy kills everything.

  • http://tvbythenumbers.com Bill Gorman

Dee, once a network comes out with a statement like this they’re not going pull any of the stunts you mentioned.

  • Travis

@Tom – While I agree that we Castle fans should not gloat because of Betty’s demise, our show is far from being a lock for third season. Some of us may lack tact, but Castle fans are hoping for a miracle just like Betty’s fans were, so please simmer down.

  • Alan

Sure ABC could have pulled the plug tonight, but for business reasons they chose not to, not because they “like” the show.

Bill, I’m sure you’re right, but what are those reasons?

Would ABC not be better off cancelling it immediately and replacing it with a higher-rated ABC show, like Grey’s Anatomy reruns or something? That’s what networks usually do, so the lack of consistently is just puzzling to me.

Usually networks cancel a show and replace it effective immediately (with reruns of an existing show).

Sometimes it works, but often this ends up generating barely higher ratings than the show it cancelled.

I guess I just don’t understand the process behind why a network cancels some shows without letting it air out remaining episodes when the replacement fares no better (ie: Eastwick)

  • PatPrez

Makes me sad, but I’m not shocked at all. I figured last year when they renewed it this would be it’s last season. Hopefully the show gets a good ending.

  • Tar

Alan giving it an ending is better for DVD sales and Syndication
and they did cut the episode count down to 20 instead of 22

  • rob

Im confused, I thought Ugly Betty had enough episodes for syndication.

  • Tar

new shows like Eastwick dont sell very well on DVD’s or Syndication/ international compared to established shows like Prison Break and Ugly Betty

  • Nerwen Aldarion

I am sorry for Ugly Betty fans, this may bode well for Castle fans like me but I also disagree with that one UB that said that Castle is a lock. Castle is not a lock until the announcment has been made.

I feel bad for Ugly Betty fans but you had to know the end was coming, at least you were prepared for it. But you can’t blame ABC, the promoted this show, syndicated it and moved it’s time slot in an attempt to boost ratings and it just wasn’t there

  • http://abc.go.com/castle Farscapefan

@tom: why did you hate Moonlight fans? The show was cancelled by idiots at CBS just after one season, so what was your reason for hating them?

@Travis: this “miracle” will 99,99% happen for “Castle”, the ratings are too good recently to ignore it, as well as iTunes downloads numbers and Hulu watching.

I’m sorry for Betty fans, I know this feeling, cried like a little baby when stupid SciFi cancelled “Farscape” back in 2002…

  • http://twitter.com/JuniorTV Junior G.

Just like I wrote on my twitter:

“First of all, Ugly Betty didn’t get canceled, but its going to end. The producers decided to properly end it, unlike canceled shows which have no ending.”

  • Jessica

Oh well, I guess they wont be calling me any more for extra work :(

  • Mumbo

^^^A cancellation with prior warning is still a cancellation.

If they had decided two years ago that “hey, let’s end the show with Season 4,” then maybe, but this is basically telling the writers, “Hey, your show’s doing lousy, so as a heads up we’re not going to order another season.”

  • http://tvbythenumbers.com Bill Gorman

Alan, “Bill, I’m sure you’re right, but what are those reasons?

Would ABC not be better off cancelling it immediately and replacing it with a higher-rated ABC show, like Grey’s Anatomy reruns or something? That’s what networks usually do, so the lack of consistently is just puzzling to me.

Grey’s Anatomy reruns would likely not equal the 1.6 rating UB has gotten on Wednesday at 10pm. Grey’s two in slot repeats have done a 1.2 and a 1.4 this season.

Usually networks cancel a show and replace it effective immediately (with reruns of an existing show).

Not true. Relatively few canceled shows are pulled before their already produced episodes finish airing compared to the number of shows that finish all their produced episodes and then never come back.

  • Don J

Not surprised at all. I liked the show for seasons 1-2 and then dropped it during season 3 when they moved it to NYC.

You should read the knuckleheads commenting on Ausiello’s ew.com blog. There is like 300+ clueless people shocked and pissed about this.

  • http://tvbythenumbers.com Bill Gorman

Don J, “You should read the knuckleheads commenting on Ausiello’s ew.com blog. There is like 300+ clueless people shocked and pissed about this.”

Precisely because they read him and not us. ;)

  • Paulo

    :(

  • Diane

I also noticed that Ausiello has this news listed as an “exclusive” but then quotes from a joint statement from ABC and the producers. Doesn’t that pretty much give away that it’s NOT an exclusive?

  • http://www.twitter.com/adrian_e Acey

Ahh, an ABC civil war between fans of Castle and Ugly Betty. You guys could always come over and watch some quality scripted programming on CBS.

  • forg

This reminded me of Alias a few years ago, ABC announced the show’s cancellation was announced earlier on and therefore it had a nice closure.

Almost every show canceled always gets “complaints” on Ausiello’s blog especially that Ausiello usually provokes them or give false hopes for a renewal/TV movie/other network pick-up. I should know I used to read that guy a lot when he was on TV Guide :D

Anyway, with the early announcement at least ABC could hype up the series finale and who knows the ratings could go back to 2.0 when it ends, yes not high but still I would love to see Betty end with season high ratings.

I hope Betty and Daniel won’t end up together by the way :D

  • Bgun

Acey: What quality programming on CBS? They are for old people, they only do spin-offs like spineless old investors.

For Castle fans….let’s hope that your favorite show will last 4 seasons. Karma’s a bitch.

@forg: I hope so too (about Betty and Daniel).

  • pete5125

several shows get stripped w/ less than 100 episodes its just their are very few that continue through a couple seasons, the only rescent exception that I can think of was 8 Simple Rules that 5 years later still pops up on ABC Family…88 episodes tends to be what is needed in most cases…will a show keep going in syndication…it’s tought to say, cable kills alot of shows because they raise the asking price so high that you start seeing it less on local stations, on top of that shows like Friends, 70′s Show, Seinfield…need alot of episodes if they are going to be aried on several networks several times a day. Their was a point 2 years ago where I could watch Everybody Loves Raymond in 5 hr blocks on diffrent networks, now I hardly see the show, Scrubs was that way last year being on TvLand, WGN, Comedy Central, CW, plus new episodes on ABC

  • Eduardo Peixoto

I’m so sad for Ugly Betty. I watch the show since it’s beginning and the last two season were pretty bad seasons – the third being way worse than the second – however this fourth season the show is amazing, and the first season ‘catchy’ viewing was there. I love the show and I absolutely love the cast and characters, so I’m really sad.

    :( Goodbye Betty.

  • Joshua K.

    Finally! Yessssssss!

I enjoyed season one of UB. Season two was dismal. Season three (what little I watched of it) was HORRIBLE. I’m glad to see it go especially after my beloved “Samantha Who?” was canceled long before it should have been.

  • Travis

@FarscapeFan – Maybe “miracle” was too strong of a word, but Castle’s chances for renewal are far from 99.99%. If they were, this very site wouldn’t have it in the “Some Danger of Being Canceled” category, and it’d be in the green zone.

  • Alec

This is depressing, my favourite show… at least there will be closure, and who knows the pilot slate next season? Maybe they could keep it on again for another year last minute?

  • Tommy

Alec, I wouldn’t get my hopes up if I were you. A move like that would be extremely rare and extremely unlikely to happen.

  • forg

^ that’s true the only show in recent memory that was “un-cancelled” was 7th Heaven but look what happened to that show and also The Apprentice but it was reformatted to the Celebrity it is now

  • Jenny

http://www.saveuglybetty.com/- We can at least try!

  • Christopher

i am sad its ending but i at least Morden Faimly Cougar town and The Middle are doing good

at least it will get a good ending its really sad to see another Scriped show come to end

  • forg

Jenny, there’s no harm in trying but this is pretty much the final decision as the producers are already preparing for the wrapping the story up

  • Craig

Big fan of the show and im sad to see it go, especially since they seem to have got back on the right track with this season, but its time, at least its going to be wrapped up

  • http://www.twitter.com/adrian_e Acey

At least start a petition for a show that has a chance of being saved.
@Bgun: That comment was made entirely in jest. But since you’re serious, go watch House or something.

  • Jenny

Yeah, I know Forg, but I still want to try. I have a feeling “Cougar Town” is getting canceled next season.

  • Chris

‘Felicity’ is running on syndication with 84 episodes… I am sure UB will have some deal to run on Lifetime or TBS soon.

  • forg

TV Guide Network is airing Ugly Betty reruns already, I saw ads when I visit their website

  • Alan

TV Guide Network is airing Ugly Betty reruns already

TV Guide Network? That’s a thing?

  • George

Yeah, TV Guide Network is a cable channel.

  • muffins

as much as i love Ugly Betty, ABC gave it a fair chance moving it to Wednesday’s. thats all anyone on the show could have asked for…

  • Lee

I feel bad for the fans but at least they’ll get some closure.

In other news, ABC has ordered 2 additional episodes of Castle bringing the total number to 24.

    http://castletv.net/exclusive-abc-orders-more-castle/3120

  • Doug

Disappointing, but not surprising. Outside of Modern Family and Lost (pending what the final season looks like, but I’m sure it will be great), it’s the best quality show ABC has. Season 2 was rocky, season 3 was pitiful in points, but season 4 has been a revelation. It’s the most unique series on TV in the way it looks. It’s like watching candy.

  • Conan The Barbarian

Fugly Betty was doomed. Its main audience melted away and all that was left was metrosexuals.

  • moraliste

I watched Ugly Betty once. It’s still about a hundred times better than Cougat Town. Cougartown Deathwatch 2011 begins today. Don’t ask me why – you’ll get your answers when you’ve earned them. The show I love to hate … more than Gray’s Anatomy, more than any show ever. The focal point and axis of all evil is contained therein. Iag Sottot5h! The crawling worms of Nyar .. eh, whatever. Cougartown is an abomination.

  • Jenny

Yeah, “CougarTown” is horrible! I really think it’s going to get canceled next season. The viewers already started dropping this season, but then they brought in Lisa Kudrow and tried to use the cheap “Friends” angle to gain more viewers. It’s only a matter of time.

  • George

It’s the most unique series on TV in the way it looks. It’s like watching candy.

@Doug: It’s true. That show looks ‘pretty’ on TV. Gotta give the set designers kudos for that.

  • moraliste

Michael Wolfe said on CNBC yesterday that scripted shows are dead. ( That’s a lie; I’m putting words in his mouth.) But the success of Jersey Shore really bodes ill for TV in general if you don’t like Reality TV. They pay those bozos a hundred bucks an episode; they’re all agitating for a thousand bucks. The Kardashians do what they do virtually for free, I’m guessing; ( or else they’re bankrupt like some 18th century face-saving Versailles aristocrat.) Same with tired old Hefner. Will Bill, Robert, Holly or anyone smack me down, or say, eh, right again, Nostradumbass?

  • http://www.tvbythenumbers.com Jeremy

I felt bad.Ugly Betty was one of the awesome-est show ever.Great ride Betty. We’ll miss you

  • Doug

Moraliste, that’s a bunch of twattle. Scripted shows aren’t dead. AMC does Mad Men, which only gets about 2 million viewers an episode. No matter what happens to the networks, there will always been an audience for scripted series.

@george: The show really is pretty on TV. The sets are so bright and colourful; it’s amazing that UB has never really gotten a lot of credit for it.

  • Doug

Oh, and I don’t think that syndication is really an issue for the show. It doesn’t repeat well to begin with, so ABC will probably just sell the episodes to a cable network. TV Guide already airs them.

  • JR

Expected. The actor who plays Daniel was vehemently against he and Betty hooking up (as has happened in other incarnations of the show). But seems some fans want to see that.

  • lynn

I don’t watch the show but the strike killed it. Large audience never returned after that. And then ABC messed with the time. That’s a shame. On the other hand, how could they keep the premise up? Anyone could have a makeover and look better. It is just a matter of money. Sometimes I wish that the creators/producers would just set the number of shows to a series and stick with it. Look at HBO and Showtime shows. The DVDs make money and people discover the shows.

The networks need a new model.

  • Ren

This really is a dark day for Betty fans myself included. Excuse me whilst I mourn. :(

  • http://tvbythenumbers.com Robert Seidman

Yep, TV Guide does have an off-network syndication deal for Ugly Betty, but I would hardly consider TV Guide Network an upper tier cable network.

I’m not sure how often they run normally or have run it in the past, but last week it only aired once on TVGN – Saturday from 7pm-8pm. It averaged 326,000 viewers. But TV Guide Net’s most-watched show last week — an encore of the Susan Boyle story “I Dreamed a Dream” averaged only 450,000 viewers.

    poor betty :-(

  • ub fan

i had really hoped that abc will renew ugly betty anyway since it is one of its most important shows (despite the ratings) and i think it sucks that ub is canceled :/ abc really started to piss me off :/

  • Tom

Well, Of course I am not surprised. Being an UB Fan, It is dissapointing But I am Happy that they will be giving it a good send off and the show will have closure. This was a Special and Unique Show and Deserves The Best Final Episode that they can produce.

RIP UGLY BETTY, YOU WILL NOT BE FORGOTTEN! :)

  • X

I agree with Tom – UB will always have a place in my heart – the most inspiring and funniest show to come of the last few years. It had depth but at least UB will have a finale. Let’s hope that Betty finishes where she wants to be – on top of the world!

  • D.J.

Is it true Ugly Betty will be replaced by Pretty Wilma?

  • http://life-2000.blogspot.com Dingo

I just posted on my blog on the topic. If you want to read the whole article, click my username.

In short, broadcast networks will quickly become the home of the most popular programming. Based on recent Nielsens, most of that programming will be major sporting events, reality shows and crime procedurals.

The pay-per-view market will cater to those who want to watch niche shows. If you want another season of Ugly Betty, for example, you’ll pay $39.99 now for it. If there’s enough cash to cover the expenses, more episodes will be produced. If not, the money is refunded.

Perhaps you love J.J. Abrams’ new script or are dying to see Alex O’Loughlin latest vehicle. You’ll subscribe upfront. No Nielsens. The international audience counts equally. No “Save Our Show” campaigns. Business at work. You’ll vote with your pocketbook on which shows really mean the most to you.

  • Matt

My only question: how does this affect renewal prospects for Chuck??? :-P

  • Ren

Goodbye Betty you will be missed dearly by all the fans. At least it remained a brilliant show and will have closure. Thanks for all the memories!

  • Chris

Ugly Betty suffered HORRIBLY after the SWG strike in Winter 2008. Season one was BRILLIANT, worthy of every Emmy it got; season 2 was still interesting up until that 6 week break. Production changed writers, they got rid of all the storylines (despite of that, Season 2 had a brilliant finale with Naomi Campbell).

The premiere of season 3 is what alienated the viewers. It was horrible, and then it got worse, with key characters leaving the show (Romijn, Rodriguez, Jensen). I am glad the show is getting closure and I hope former regulars will join. And that Betty gets that damn makeover.

  • AtCat

Another new victim of the Friday Night timeslot.

  • puredieselbc

All good things must come to an end and I just hope that they get a proper send off. Perhaps in the final episodes Betty will finally physically become the Swan that the show promised from the start.

The moment I heard it was moving from Fri@9pm to Wed@10pm I knew that this was more of a lateral move than a reprieve. You see Wed@10pm is to ABC what Fri@9pm is to Fox: TOXIC. ABC moved Life On Mars there, then replaced it with The Unusals; both eventually got cancelled. Wed@10pm is ABC toxic corner; it’s where they send their shows to die.

I wonder what show ABC will put there next?

  • AO

I’m amazed at those people taking offense at Castle due to the comments made by 2-3 out of the millions of people who watch it. I’m sure that we can find people who are fans of any show, including Ugly Betty, who are rude or insensitive. If you’re going to boycott or hate a show because you dislike a portion of it’s audience then you may as well just turn the TV off now.

When Ugly Betty was being moved to Wednesdays, which meant that Eastwick fans would never get to see 2 Episodes of that show, then how many Ugly Betty fans were especially sensitive to their situation? Human reactions are extremely varied and have nothing to do whether or not a show “deserves” to be canceled.

  • Lucky

*I love Ugly Betty, but I’m glad they are going out while it’s still a good show like LOST is doing.
*As for it NOT being a ground breaking series: It most certainly is. It is a one hour, comedy series featuring lead Hispanic actors, an African American actress and gay central characters. I can’t even think of a handful of shows that fit that bill on network television, past or present. There’s your ground breaking. Unfortunately, diversity is still ground breaking.
*As for Castle, which I like, it’s not like it was an either or situation.

  • http://www.deltaphotography.net Michael J

    @ puredieselbc

Perhaps ABC will move the Deep End to the 10 pm timeslot…it seems to be a popular slot with ABC for shows that are dead or dying. :P

  • ern.

    lol @ the first comment.

anyways this doesn’t surprise me but its still kinda sad. the writers of the show did a great job with season 1, season 2 was cool but not as good, season 3 was horrible and season 4 has been great (the last few weeks though its kinda been like “ok what happened?”)

    still its pretty sad.

  • ern.

i think the worst part is now i’ma want to go out and buy the seasons which should only cost me, oh i don’t know, $200.

the prices for tv series are CUH-RAZY. i was looking @ the first season of True Blood and it cost $49.99

I WISH I WOULD PAY 50 BUCKS FOR A TV SHOW.

  • AO

    ern.,

Most TV shows don’t cost that much (with a few notable exceptions such as the Star Trek’s and most HBO programs), unless you are paying the full MSRP. Right now Amazon has S1-3 for $100 if bought individually, or $91 as a Set. And the price is usually less when they go on sale. And that’s just one site, you might find an even better discount if you look around.

  • kenn

R.I.P. Ugly Betty, I hope they give an amazing finale

  • Jenny

“the prices for tv series are CUH-RAZY. i was looking @ the first season of True Blood and it cost $49.99

I WISH I WOULD PAY 50 BUCKS FOR A TV SHOW.”

Yeah, I know and it’s only 12 episodes. HBO & Showtime series are always severely overpriced. That’s why I always wait until they go on sale. I got “True Blood” season one on sale for $19.99. They aren’t ripping me off.

  • Carol

Ugly Betty’s problem in my opinion is the same as Heroes. Both had great first seasons and then crashed and burned, never really recovering but continuing to hemorrage viewers. For some reason shows don’t seem to know when they have a good thing and then tinker with it. Lost had a similar problem but they were able to overcome their disastrous 2nd season. It was a novella that had a beginning, middle and ending – which doesn’t lend itself to a long term storyline.

In my opinion they needed to have transformed Betty in the 2nd season and changed the storyline. Maybe had her get together with her boss and then deal with their problems. Not believable to me that Betty would remain clueless about fashion in what she wears or have braces so long. Realistically she should have been earning really good money and would have learned fairly quickly how to look more in fashion.

The show started out sort of as a Cinderella storylines with poor girl meets rich guy and then devolved from that.

    Damn… poor Ugly Betty

  • Hollywood53

65 episodes is usually the minimum for syndication, although Clueless went into syndication with 62 episodes.

  • ern.

@Jenny…the Showtime shows are more in my price range sometimes. they sell Weeds for like 19.99 but then they sell United States Of Tara and Nurse Jackie for like 29.99 (which is still ok i guess)

but then they sell Dexter anywhere from $35-$45

  • Shawn

I’ve said this a few times but it seems so many shows are being offered on demand now that I have to wonder how ratings numbers are even calculated anymore? I just think the system is flawed when we lose good shows for more trash and experiments that last 3 episodes. I almost don’t care about any night of television anymore (with the exception of Lost and Glee). I don’t watch TV when they offer it to me, I watch it on my time and that seems to be the norm now. When is someone going to figure out a better way to measure? Sad for Ugly Betty…making room for more reality TV I imagine.

  • hwextra

I am a Professional Extra in Hollywood and this show left L.A. and moved to New York and pissed off all the regular extras and crew. Once it did that, it had bad karma and was doomed. Good riddance!

  • Ren

    @Really Tired

    I don’t get it??

  • Really Tired

    @Ren

I gave a ‘Come On’ because the superlatives and love directed at UB was far more excessive than necessary. Or believable. This show aint Shakespeare, for g-d sake. And the phony baloney ABC love on this board makes me wonder if most of the posters are members of the Disney Board.

  • mel

    @Really Tired

You are preaching to the choir here. There’s not one show on ABC to me that’s watchable. DH, Greys are tired and boring now. PP a Greys retread. Modern Family I kind of like but Fox and CBS far outclasses ABC. Even terrible NBC has Chuck and The Office and L&O SVU

  • mel

Maybe Robert Iger, president of Disney, is using a bunch of alias’s here.

  • Ren

    @Really Tired

Well I’ve watched the show since it started and I loved every minute of it. So sorry for being passionate about an ABC show, but get over it!

  • Really Tired

    Just difference of opinions, Ren.

NBC has the Office and 30 Rock. Parks and Rec is funnier than it use to be.
TNT has Men of A Certain Age.
SHO has Nurse Jackie and Confess of A Call Girl.
    fX has Damages, Rescue Me.
HBO has Big Love and a boat load of new tv shows coming in the next 6 months.
ABC has ……. I’m thinking. I guess Modern Family is fine. Not funny enough.
    CBS has NOTHING good.
FOX has NOTHING good. Idol is popular, but it’s for 22 year old ladies. And kids. Awful.

    IMO.

  • Alan

My only question: how does this affect renewal prospects for Chuck???

And there’s the inevitable Chuck reference.

As per the tvbythenumbers.com “Chuck” drinking game rules, everyone take their shot of tequila now!

  • Holly

Wait…there’s a drinking game? How did I miss this?!?

  • Alan

Oh it’s tons of fun, Holly.

Anytime someone mentions Chuck in a non-Chuck related article, take a shot of the Mexican good stuff!

But beware, with the Chuck obsessed folks on this website, you’ll likely be drunk within minutes. By 9:00am at the latest.

But that’s okay, it’s part of the fun!

  • matt stechel

    chuck will be renewed
    castle will be renewed
abc will likely try a new show on weds at 10—unless it wants to move brothers and sisters which would fit alongside their sitcoms all of which contain wacky family combinations as well—but likely that also would prob be the end of that series too.

i actually think castle would do well on weds at 10—-it’d be against 2 darker crime shows on the other 2 primetime networks–so just for having a lighter tone (but still being a crime proceedural) it would prob do fine—but its honestly doing fine on monddays at 10 (largely thanks to eroding csi miami) and to move it would prob be a mistake at this point.

  • matt stechel

Bill—-THE UNIT is stripped in syndication on two different stations (BET and MyNetwork) and that only had 68 episodes? (I really think given CBS’s lack of shows on sunday nights that cbs made a mistake in not renewing it for one last season which would’ve given it 90 eps—too soon cbs, too soon, but they just had to make room for three rivers.)

  • matt stechel

    Bill= Robert.

  • matt stechel

    bil= robert

  • http://tvbythenumbers.com Bill Gorman

matt, The Unit was doing terrible ratings, obviously CBS decided it was in its financial interest to try something new. That its replacement also did terribly is a complete non-sequiter.

You do realize those aren’t released by SHOWTIME. So that explains the differences in their respective prices. It’s not a scam by showtime to cheat you out of more money for Dexter.

Weeds/Nurse Jackie are produced by Lions Gate, and they price TV sets fairly cheaply.
USoT/Dexter are Paramount, I believe. So it’s apples & oranges comparing “showtime” shows MSRP differences.

As for HBO, they have been getting much more competitive with their DVD prices. The last several things released were at a very low MSRP. I got Trueblood on Blu-ray and paid like $24.99.

The Ugly Betty sets could be found very cheap if you’re patient and wait for a sale (15.99-19.99 range).

Glad to see UB go out on a high note. Wish more networks would be kind enough to let a show “wrap-up”

  • Brittany

ABC DO NOT CANCEL UGLY BETTY! This show is great!

  • rob

ABC is still promoting Ugly Betty so thats good!

  • RickS

    How was this show groundbreaking?

@Rick …. (Saying in Saecastic Tone) Because it is on ABC, which according to many poasters (intentional spelling) on this board if it’s on ABC, It’s Gotta Be Good.

  • JAO

Will sure miss Ugly Betty … It is smart, fun, and adorable. Haven’t missed an episode! I wish networks would realize there is room for all. Every show can’t be number 1! Look how long NCIS was on before it gained momentum … and don’t get me going on JAG~.

  • msierra777

1st season = great ( not outstanding, but great )
    2nd season = ok
    3rd season = horrible
4th season = too little, too late

Id like to know if there were any changes in the writing staff/creative executives between 2nd and 3rd season. If there were, whomever joined the staff 3rd season really tanked this show.

Also, it was around 3rd season that the show ceased to be a “Dramady” and became a Drama. The few jokes that they did throw in were recycled over and over again.

I dont mean to sound negative, I actually watched the show and was a fan. C’mon people, even the “Bahamas” episode which was supposed to be some big “event” was crap.

Sorry to see it go, but I wasn’t surprised. It was being beat by Leno….lol

  • mayorofsmpleton

    How was this show groundbreaking?**

How about because it was the first show to feature a Mexican American family as the central focal point?

^ What about Greetings from Tucson or The George Lopez Show?

Both half-hour sitcoms. Name me an hourlong drama. I’m sure you might find one, but I believe Ugly Betty was the first high-profile.

  • Gingie

The one show that my husband and I agree upon watching is Ugly Betty. We look forward to it every season and have been very disappointed that there were so many reruns last season.
    It’s totally unique!
    We’re very disappointed!
I can’t understand why How I Met Your Mother is still taking-up air time, and The Office is so corny that it’s sickening. Earl is another show that shouldn’t have shown a second time!
I loved October Road and it just disappeared without ending.
Maybe not everyone takes the time to submit comments about TV shows. I never have before this. But now I’m upset!

Gotta give ABC credit, it wasn’t working on Thur. so they tried Fri. night, hey Smallville found a way to make it work for them, so has CBS, also it was just a couple years ago ABC was killing everyone w/ TGIF(to this day I can’t believe ABC let that franchise die off), and MyNet w/WWWreestling.

It didn’t work so they tried Wed night, which is their strongest comedy night, @ 10 PM against a cancled Jay Leno, No competition on (Fox, MyNet, ION, or CW…other than reruns)and CBS CSI:NY

and if it would of came in 2nd place I doubt you would here they were cancling the show, but no it got beat by LENO.

At least it gets an ending, I didn’t get that from My Name is Earle, I got one from Scrubs but then ABC brought it back so now I wont get one from it either, Millenium I had to waite a year for them to tack it on an X-Files episode…etc, etc, etc

For a show like Betty this is the best case, since it is based off a telenovle, hopefully it can get moved for reruns to something more high profile like Lifetime.

TVGuide Network, so dont they just scroll a tv schedule at the bottom of the page and now they show real shows at the top of the screen…weird??

  • joanne seay

i’m terribly disappointed – loved the show!

they should at least consider a spin off – my vote goes to Vanessa Williams, Becky Newton and Michael Uribe – what talent!!
