Due to the nature of live programming the ratings for  for the president’s State of The Union address are approximate and subject to significant revisions in the final numbers. See below for more information on these Fast Affiliate Ratings.

Scoreboard FOX ABC NBC CBS Uni CW
Rating: Adults 18-49 5.8/16 1.8/5 1.5/4 1.4/4 1.2/3 0.5/1
Rating: Adults 18-34 5.1/15 1.5/4 1.2/4 0.9/3 1.2/4 0.6/2
Total Viewers (million) 15.54 6.26 5.71 5.43 3.23 1.11

FOX easily won the night with an hour of American Idol at 8pm on a night where outside of Idol, the broadcast schedule was dominated by President Obama’s State of the Union address and repeats.

Numbers for the cable news outlets won’t be available until this afternoon, and even for the broadcast networks we’ll have to wait for the finals to see how many people watched the address since Obama spoke for more than an hour (but less than 90 minutes), plus the very approximate nature of live events.  After Obama’s address was the Republican response and analysis.

But in the 9p-10p hour across ABC, CBS, FOX and NBC, the address averaged 30.69 million viewers and a 9.1/25 rating share with adults 18-49.  Update: across the broadcast and cable networks airing the address it averaged  48,009,595 viewers.

FOX led the coverage of the State of the Union, which is atypical (Fox News Channel often outperforms the broadcast network’s coverage of presidential addresses), but how much of that is due to Idol plus the numbers being even a little bit more screwed up  than they normally would because American Idol “aired out of pattern” in the Mountain time zone.

American Idol was up slightly (1%) versus Tuesday night, but down about 7 percent from a week ago with adults 18-49, and down about 10 percent from the same night last year.  FOX expects last night’s results to improve a bit in the final numbers due to the out of pattern airing in the Mountain time zone.  Update: in the final numbers American Idol rose to a 9.5/26 rating/share with adults 18-49.

In Late-Night Local People Meters Wednesday night:

  • Conan O’Brien (1.0/4 in 18-49 in local people meters with an encore telecast) outscored CBS’s LATE SHOW (0.7/3 with an encore telecast) in Nielsen’s 25 local markets with People Meters.
  • At 12:35 a.m., Jimmy Fallon (0.5/3 in 18-49 in local people meters with an encore telecast) topped CBS’s first-run LATE LATE SHOW (0.4/2).

Below the details for last night are the ratings details for Obama’s previous addresses and primetime press conferences.

Here are some past results  for President Obama’s TV appearances — the results below are final numbers, factoring in all the networks.   For comparitive  purposes of the preliminary numbers on December 1st address below averaged 30.84 million on ABC, CBS, NBC and FOX.  But that’s an apples-to-oranges comparison because the December 1 address was only 30 minutes.   The address on 9/9 was one hour, but it was only carried on 3 of the broadcast networks, those three networks accounted for 26 million viewers.

Definitions:

Fast Affiliate Ratings: These first national ratings, including demographics, are available at approximately 11 AM (ET) the day after telecast, and are released to subscribing customers daily. These data, from the National People Meter sample, are strictly time-period information, based on the normal broadcast network feed, and include all programming on the affiliated stations, sometimes including network programming, sometimes not. The figures may include stations that did not air the entire network feed, as well as local news breaks or cutaways for local coverage or other programming. Fast Affiliate ratings are not as useful for live programs and are likely to differ significantly from the final results, because the data reflect normal broadcast feed patterns. For example, with a World Series game, Fast Affiliate Ratings would include whatever aired from 8-11PM on affiliates in the Pacific Time Zone, following the live football game, but not game coverage that begins at 5PM PT. The same would be true of Presidential debates as well as live award shows and breaking news reports.

Rating: Estimated percentage of the universe of TV households (or other specified group) tuned to a program in the average minute. Ratings are expressed as a percent.

Share (of Audience): The percent of households (or persons) using television who are tuned to a specific program, station or network in a specific area at a specific time. (See also, Rating, which represents tuning or viewing as a percent of the entire population being measured.)

Time Shifted Viewing – Program ratings for national sources are produced in three streams of data – Live, Live+Same Day (Live+SD) and Live+7 Day. Time shifted figures account for incremental viewing that takes place with DVRs which are currently in approximately 24.4% of all U.S. TV households. Live+Same Day (Live+SD) include viewing during the same broadcast day as the original telecast, with a cut-off of 3:00AM local time when meters transmit daily viewing to Nielsen for processing. Live+7 Day ratings include incremental viewing that takes place during the 7 days following a telecast.

  • Dario

Mercy (R) got almost better numbers than Heroes original episode…(I mean in total viewers)

  • Dario

Also, Life Unexpected (R) got nice numbers.

  • Jenny

Go “Life Unexpected” that’s a good repeat airing number for The CW!

  • mike

does anyone thing that with repeate numbers like that for life unexpected the drop in ratings for mondays origional broadcast becomes less worrysome?

  • The Daw

Can’t treat LUX’s repeat as anything special–it was an original program up against the State of the Union.

And strong repeat business, in the long run, should only matter if it boosts the rating for the original airing. CW, ideally, would fill all those blocks with originals.

  • The Daw

    a scripted program*

  • Jenny

“does anyone thing that with repeate numbers like that for life unexpected the drop in ratings for mondays origional broadcast becomes less worrysome?”- I think LUX is still finding it’s audience. Hopefully it will continue to improve.

  • mike

the daw – all i am thinking is that maybe some people are watcing the repeat broadcast numbers instead of the origional because maybe they have somthing else on on monday. you dont think the cw would look at the repeat numbers of the past 2 weeks and consider them good, thus maybe boosting the chances it will continue into next season?

  • paul

life unexpected built by 100 percent in the demo out of gossip girl.

  • John

Now if NBC could get him on every night they’d do OK.

  • Tar

shows in their first 2 or 3 episodes are still new people are curious so they repeat well GG is in its third season not alot of people who’ve never seen the show will check out an episodes in the middle of season 3

  • Acey

I wish Lux the best. It’s actually a pretty good show. With my favourite CBS dramas in repeats, I found myself most looking forward to Lux this week.

  • Jenny

Heck, it could be like “Melrose Place” and just completely bombing! Don’t rain on my parade.

  • rob

Repeats of ABC comedies are beating repeats of CBS comedies. GOOD!

Very good repeat #s for Life Unexpected.

  • The Daw

It’s definitely a good CW repeat number, but the show (if I remember corerctly) repeated decently last week and then dropped for the 2nd original airing on Monday. Good repeat numbers are nice, but they only are truly valuable if they are drawing fresh, interested viewers who could be converted into audience for the original airing on Monday. Otherwise, it’s just filler TV that could be replaced by original programming.

  • samantha

I wouldnt say a 0.6 rating for LUX was a good thing, I’d say that those adults who watched a teen drama instead of the state of the union address should probably get their priorities in order! Sad that there are people out there who dont care about their country!

  • Chris

Considering us out here on the west coast saw the State of the Union BEFORE American Idol, I wonder how that skewed the ratings for the SOTU in WA, ID, OR, CA, UT, and AZ.

  • http://tvbythenumbers.com Robert Seidman

Chris, thus all the disclaimers about numbers for live events being very approximate. For more detail see the “Fast Affiliate Ratings” definition near the bottom of the post.

  • Trent

Interesting to see Cougar Town beat Two and a Half Men

  • Peter

It will be interesting to see if Two and a Half Men’s ratings start to take a small nosedive following all this bad news for Charlie Sheen. It’s weird how people can’t stand Tiger Woods right now but Sheen is somehow catching a break (somewhat).

  • The Daw

Two and a Half Men is still posting phenomenal numbers in originals…it recently reclaimed the 18-49 throne from Big Bang.

  • George

I know it’s not uncommon for the CW to air repeat episodes of there shows the same week they air them for the first time, but normally these reapeat airings are lucky to draw a million viewers. The repeat numbers for LUX the first two weeks have been pretty good. I wonder how the CW will use these in evaluating the future of this show.

Comments on repeats not being important are ridiculous. Networks love shows that repeat well. Part of why WB canceled ANGEL was because it repeated poorly. Repeats also usually factor into season averages.

That’s not exactly the best news, given that Two and a Half Men has been on 3 years longer. It should be dominating The Big Bang Theory. But clearly CBS made another correct move because the Monday schedule this year is even more successful than last year.

Of course, BBT probably costs a third as much per episode to make as 2 1/2, so I’m thinking the Nerd Quartet has some serious ROI going for the Eye Network.

thats what im wondering to george. Hopefully they see this as a good thing for the future of the show i enjoy it

  • samantha

I though repeats only factored in to season averages if they air in their orignal air spot. So for LUX only repeats at 9 on Monday will count towards its averages?! Repaeting ouside of origoanl time slots are a good thing in the long run, it’ll keep LUX’s average higher than it would be if they repeated at Monday 9pm!

  • http://tvbythenumbers.com Bill Gorman

Blabla, others, I wouldn’t draw any conclusions on the SOTU ratings from these numbers quite yet, they are entirely approximate because of the live event, but, of course, Robert’s already written that several times.

As long As AI has over 15 million total viewers…I don’t see this Music talent search ever to go off the air…I’m enjoying it still…”"” Pants on the Ground “” “” Pants on the Ground…”"”Looking like a fool with your pants on the ground…I think this years AI was found already…!!!! @X-R.G. I recall Marc Berman saying on his podcast that it was sked for next Tuesday, but they moved it to last night to not interfere with Lost’s premiere. Take it for what it’s worth.

What a boring night for television

  • http://www.vlaentivisionfilms.com Joe

I love how American Idol and Football get more viewers than the Presidents SOTU address. Just shows why our country is failing…LOL. I wonder if we are ever in another World War or Civil War again if they’ll be a truce time during Idol every week.

  • William Hughes

Joe, The Networks are still in the Twentieth Century. While The Major Broadcast Networks and the Cable News Networks go all-out to televise the President, they are blind to the fact that there are so many other choices for people to watch. 40 years ago, as a Child, I resented it when the Networks would pre-empt “MY Show” to cover a Presidential Speech. There wasn’t much I could do, as there were only a handful of Independant Stations (Which seldom carried anything interesting in Primetime as far as I was Concerned) you could turn to If watching the President was not your cup of Tea. Today however, it’s a whole differant story! The Choices for Viewers are Incredible. Cable and Satellite Stations Galore! One thing hasn’t changed though. (At least in my Opinion) They still do not have anything to show that interests me. However, in Addition to Cable, people can find something they might like on The Internet, or if push comes to shove, Home Video.

  • CdeLeo

Last night I watched some reality. It’s called TACO HELL and it’s about a quasi-mexican fast food chain and what happens when half the staff doesn’t show up for work. Drama! Suspense! Nachos!
It was better than anything on NBC this season.

  • http://deleted Kell

@ Patrick J. Murphy, who wrote
“Of course, BBT probably costs a third as much per episode to make as 2 1/2…”

I disagree. Even though I love 2 1/2 Men, it seems to be every bit as cheap to produce as, say, Old Christine. No exterior shots (no location shooting), everything goes on on one set… Not that I think TBBT is much more expensive, but it’s no cheaper than 2 1/2 men.

Although if you’re talking salaries for the actors – then you might be on to something.

Not really, in the final numbers Big Bang Theory two weeks ago went up to 5.3, tying with 2.5 Men’s demo.

But I agree, 2.5 Men’s ratings are phenomenal, if we take a look of the ratings of shows three years ago aside from Idol of course, 2.5 Men is the one who stayed strong until now

  • AtCat

I was surprised that FOX got most of the viewing on network TV for the State of the Union that night. I assume American Idol should always be a lead-in for anything Presidential?

ONE DEMO WAS SURE TO LOVE LAST NIGHTS’ STATE OF THE UNION

The State of the Union was an embarrassment. It makes me wonder if TV broadcasting of it is a good idea. Perhaps we should simply go back to radio coverage.
Why? Not because of our President’s speech. He was eloquent as always, which is refreshing considering other SOTU speeches we’ve been subjected to in the past.
I doubt the day will come when I totally agree with any politician, let alone a President, so the subject matter wasn’t the problem.
Embarrassing was the infantile way adult members of Congress used the occasion of an important speech to behave in an undignified and dis-respectful manner to their (like it or not)’Commander In Cheif’.
One would have thought half the room’s chairs had been plastered with Super-Glue.
I’ve always been impressed by the way our leaders come together for the SOTU and temporarily put political squabbles away for the
evening. For the sake of our Country, for national security, for simple courtesy’s sake.
My Mom always said “If you can’t play nice, don’t play at all”.
Some of these elected officials need to go home and let someone who respects our system come “play” in their place.
However, I’m sure one demographic was glued to their TV sets, enjoying every moment…our enemies.
Didn’t we once learn a quote from our textbooks saying “United we stand…divided we fall.” ? Where’s Washington keep the parachutes?

Uh, Ohiogirl…go back and look at most State of the Unions. The opposition party always sits and stays quiet during the speech. Not just Republicans during your Socialist President’s speech.

I would think you’d be more upset by Commie Obommie subtly threatening the separation of powers, and having his party stand and surround the Supreme Court…after he insulted them (a breach of protocol that has never occured in any other State of the Union speech).
