Caprica No Ratings Juggernaut

Caprica’s episode on Friday night averaged a .5 rating with adults 18-49 and 1.411 million viewers.  That compares with 1.6 million viewers and a 0.4 adults 18-49 rating for the pilot episode.  But the pilot was two hours, and was widely available in a variety of ways (online, on-demand, DVD) well before the pilot actually aired.

It’s early, but those numbers strike me as a bit disappointing. I know, I know, just wait until the live+7 DVR numbers come in…

Disclaimer: I enjoyed Friday night’s episode.

    A brief history!

    (1) Battlestar Galactica’s finale faced off against Dollhouse! Boo!!!

    (2) I created several voodoo dolls of the Battlestar Galactica people! These voodoo dolls were dipped in acid! Tarred and feathered! And, worse of all, I danced them around and said, “Caprica’s ratings will suck! Caprica’s ratings will suck!”

    (3) Now, Caprica’s ratings do, indeed, suck! Coincidence?! I think not! I will be further vindicated soon when we learn of a random Caprica person having been covered in feathers! You know it’s coming!

Dollhouse! Dollhouse! Dollhouse! Dollhouse rules! Caprica drools! Dollhouse!

JBF, you must be VERY conflicted.

Jane Espenson, Caprica’s showrunner is a Joss Whedon alum from the Buffy days and…she was a consulting producer on 8 episodes of…wait for it…DOLLHOUSE!

Oh Billbert, I am well aware of Jane Espenson! That is why I did not create a voodoo doll for her specifically!

Prior to writing for Buffy, she wrote for Monty, Me and the Boys, Nowhere Man, and Something so Right, and after Buffy she wrote for Tru Calling, the Inside, and Jake in Progress, so the bright side is she bounces back quickly (and often!)!

When Caprica fails miserably this year, she can move on to the FX series that Joss is certain to create within the next year! (And, in fact, the next time you post about Damages, I have some only-slightly-offtopic thoughts on Joss’s FX series!)

Joss + Jane forever and ever and ever and ever and ever and ever and ever and ever!

I love the idea, the story line, the characters–problem it moves slower than a soap opera. It is way too predictable; I give it 3 more episodes to turn into something or it turns into Firefly the TV series, which was way better than this has been so far.

I couldn’t sit through the pilot of Caprica. I haven’t seen the second episode yet, but I wouldn’t be surprised if it wasn’t good. RM can not write good Battlestar Galactica or even its prequel apparently. He is too enamored with Lost.

Disappointing but I’m not worried yet. I think Caprica has the potential to grow over the course of the season. It has a good cast and an interesting story that’s not too confusing. The developing story arcs appear based more on personal relationships rather than LOST-style complex mythology.

honestly who thought a spin off/prequel to a show that was declining in viewers and acclaim thought this was a good idea?

It’s a neat show but it’s very dense and is a good example of that other article on this site – mythology based serialized shows vs. character based serialized shows. I just can’t imagine this being a big draw for people who never saw BSG or didn’t like BSG. I also can’t see it pulling in new viewers the longer it goes on, they’d just be lost. In that respect, it reminds me a bit of Defying Gravity.

I loved BSG, but for some reason have zero interest in Caprica.
Now Cimmer says it’s a bit like Defying Gravity? Man, that’s just damning.

But on a + note: JBF is still commenting!

Too bad the ratings are bad, because I find the show very fascinating and simply beautiful to look at! I hope it’ll get a second season, despite the ailing ratings, I’m just enjoying it that much…! I have great hopes for this show.

At least cable channels don’t tend to cancel shows in the middle of their seasons… I hope this one makes it though. Perhaps the most intelligent series on TV right now (right behind Lost).

I’m not surprised at all I was willing to give the series a chance after what I thought was a dissapointing pilot but the episode on Friday has turned me off, the show is just too slow and I don’t really care about the premise. I can’t blame the production values or the cast who have been fine, I just simply don’t care what happens.

    JBF,

Uh, you do realize that James Marsters, another Buffy alum, is going to be in about three of the Caprica eps, which is also directly attributed to Ms. Epsenson, as I believe she likes JM’s work and wrote many of his “Buffy” episodes.

Speaking of the above referenced eps, “Spike” would probably not be amused.

You are just one goofy dude. Entertaining, but goofy. ;)

While it has the depth of BSG that I loved (as opposed to any of their recent hits warehouse 13 anyone) I don’t find the characters nearly as enjoyable and intreging. But I have faith that the talent behind BSG will follow through. It’s nice to have a dense drama driven show on again. Esp on a channel that has produced a lot ALOT if fluff recently. I miss BSG.

I guess SGU looks pretty good compared to this. They hyped this show like the second coming and 1.6???
    Ouch.
Outside of BSG most Sci-Fi channel shows succeeded because they were fun.
    Try that.

Good riddance! Is it surprise that Moore’s imposter BSG lost 69% of its audience… that SG-U got crappy ratings… and this show if failing so fast so soon? No one wants to see Bonnie Hammer’s soap opera in space, low-budget garbage that bears little to no resemblance to the original source material.

In the meantime, REAL science fiction like AVATAR is breaking records at the box office. There’s a reason why Ron Moore’s resume licks the shoes of James Cameron, my friends.

Yeah, this is a parenthetical addition to a blockbuster idea that everyone has already watched. Simply taking parts of the story and re-creating parts to explain the past or future doesn’t really add anything to the story.

I tried watching it; it just seems ENDLESS. I can’t seem to keep watching it; I’m sorry…

SyFy Stealth marketers… oops! I mean posters who use that extreme “explosions, pew, pew…” tired line, are people who don’t like REAL science fiction/space fantasy in the first place. Sorry, making fun of fan favorites like STAR WARS, STAR TREK, ALIENS, etc, and other excellent shows and movies that have explosions, space ships AND good drama, dialogue, etc (NOT soap opera garbage) doesn’t win you any converts.

You know, it’s posting threads like this that make me want an annotated, hardcover compilation book of TVByTheNumbers for Christmas. I’m still waiting to see the T-shirts, too… and there are so many options that could be put on them, too (in no particular order):

I’m bitter, nothing I watch on TV does well =/

Not sure if that means I like watching crap, or my taste is too enlightened compared to the masses.

Maybe I’m just reading into it too much.

It’s not a surprise people say “Caprica” and “SG:U” are “slow” and “soap-operatic.” The only thing cheaper to make than a show where two people sit in a plain room and talk about their feelings is a shot of the same room without any people in it.

I think both shows have their merits, but I also think they’re both cynical attempts at cashing in on loyal fanbases.

I just think it’s a shame they keep re-hashing the same material. There’s plenty of character-driven science fiction out there to adapt if they can’t be bothered to come up with something new. Ursula Le Guin’s Hannish novels, say, or the Ender books after “Ender’s Game,” where Ender goes from planet to planet solving problems.

Joe H, why must it be either?

How about simply that you like stuff that not enough other folks like to make it viable on ad supported television? (not saying that Caprica is not viable, just using your comment as an example).

Why must either you (who would like watching crap) or others (who are unenlightened masses) be wrong in some way?

Was anyone actually expecting Caprica to be a ratings monster for SyFy? 1.4M viewers isn’t great compared to something like Warehouse 13 which got between 3-4M viewers last summer. I recall that BSG was on Friday Nights during season 2 or 3 and got around the same numbers. But I think the only viewers who really care about it are leftover BSG fans. Warehouse 13 is at least procedural-like and viewers can join in anytime.

“When people complain about the show being too slow, I always imagine that what they really want to say is “Where are all the big ’splodey spaceships”

Did it ever occur to you that these people just think the pace is too slow, or not interesting enough to keep their attention? They should change the title to “Invasion of the Sleepwalkers”. Seriously, this thing is beyond boring.

Nathan had a great suggestion. Next time SyFy wants to create a soft-sci fi series, maybe they should turn to some of the real experts like Ursula Le Guin. She typically doesn’t have any exploding spaceships in her novels, but she also doesn’t put her readers to sleep. Caprica needs exploding spaceships because the story is so lacking. We already know how this story ends.

Good idea, but that will never happen. This is why:

Hammer & co. tricked the creator of 78-79 BSG, Glen A Larson. Larson only agreed to the show, b/c at the time, DeSanto & Singer were producing a faithful continaution. …then, they pulled the old bait-n-switch and called in Moore to do a cheap-o, disrespectful, re-imagination. They did the same thing to LeGuin:

How the Sci Fi Channel wrecked my books.
    By Ursula K. Le Guin

Posted Thursday, Dec. 16, 2004, at 6:14 AM PT

On Tuesday night, the Sci Fi Channel aired its final installment of Legend of Earthsea, the miniseries based—loosely, as it turns out—on my Earthsea books. The books, A Wizard of Earthsea and The Tombs of Atuan, which were published more than 30 years ago, are about two young people finding out what their power, their freedom, and their responsibilities are. I don’t know what the film is about. It’s full of scenes from the story, arranged differently, in an entirely different plot, so that they make no sense. My protagonist is Ged, a boy with red-brown skin. In the film, he’s a petulant white kid. Readers who’ve been wondering why I “let them change the story” may find some answers here.

When I sold the rights to Earthsea a few years ago, my contract gave me the standard status of “consultant”—which means whatever the producers want it to mean, almost always little or nothing. My agency could not improve this clause. But the purchasers talked as though they genuinely meant to respect the books and to ask for my input when planning the film. They said they had already secured Philippa Boyens (who co-wrote the scripts for The Lord of the Rings) as principal script writer. The script was, to me, all-important, so Boyens’ presence was the key factor in my decision to sell this group the option to the film rights.

Months went by. By the time the producers got backing from the Sci Fi Channel for a miniseries—and another producer, Robert Halmi Sr., had come aboard—they had lost Boyens. That was a blow. But I had just seen Halmi’s miniseries DreamKeeper, which had a stunning Native American cast, and I hoped that Halmi might include some of those great actors in Earthsea.

    *****************************

Good idea, but that will never happen. This is why:

Hammer & co. tricked the creator of 78-79 BSG, Glen A Larson. Larson only agreed to the show, b/c at the time, DeSanto & Singer were producing a faithful continaution. …then, they pulled the old bait-n-switch and called in Moore to do a cheap-o, disrespectful, re-imagination. They did the same thing to LeGuin:

    ******************

A lot of series I’ve liked have been cancelled. It amazes me that many well written, casted and acted shows are cancelled due to bad ratings while many poorly written, casted and acted shows are a hit. Sometimes a well written, casted, and acted show is a hit but it’s often rare in my opinion. I’ve accepted that. Not everyone likes the same thing and people watch TV shows for different reasons. Some for escape or the premise of the show interests them, or they think one of the actors is sexy, etc.)

Personally I’m more into heavy drama and scifi. As a female I don’t care that much about things blowing up and I don’t like graphic sex scenes. I like character development, intense acting, and good storylines. I loved Babylon 5, which compared to today had crappy CGI but shows huge development of the characters over the span of the show.

Caprica has ruined my view of Cylons. The basic premise of the show is that a group of angsty, emo teenagers, a mafiosi, and an unscrupulous defense contractor created the Cylons…and the first ever Cylon was one of the very emo teenagers!!!

On the contray, I like the premise of the show…the genesis of the Cylons makes for a fascinating story. I only hope that there is more exposition that shows more of the pre-Cylon colonial society and military…seeing the shipyards where battlestars are constructed for example and perhaps a sneak peek at the Galactica herself!

What so far Caprica is showing is that the only cylon that is functional had a pseudo-personality implanted into it. Dr. Graystone is unable to create any others and his original cylon without the implanted personality didn’t work. Since he used Zoe’s program to create an avatar of Tamara Adama with a pseudo-personality, I’m wondering if he’ll start creating other pseduo-personalities and download them into cylons in order to make more of them.

Moore would have been better off telling the stories about what happened to the final Basestar (as well as others that likely remained after the Colony was destroyed), what happened to the 15 ship fleet the Pegasus looted (perhaps they arrived back in the colonies after the Cylon occupation ended), possible survivors remaining on the 12 colony worlds. Try each out as a miniseries and see how well they are received and if one gets large enough ratings and fans want more – then do a new series on that subject.

Part of the problem is Caprica’s timeslot – it’s probably going to look much better once online views are added in, BUT they’re not posting them on Hulu or Syfy.com until Wednesday! They need to get rid of the wait and post them at midnight after first airing like most shows are. The wait period only works for House because that’s such an established show.

Oh, and I forgot – the second episode faced opposite the Dollhouse finale. I’d imagine the shows share a lot of viewers, and most would choose to watch the final episode of Dollhouse, then catch Caprica online.

And @ Stan – This is supposed to lead up to the first Cylon War, and I suspect the Tauron mafia storyline is partially a way of showing how Admiral Adama became the man he was in BSG, esp. considering how they already showed an event in his life greatly affected by it.

The twisting over backwards to explain why the ratings were so bad is kind of amusing. I don’t understand why it’s necessary though. There is nothing wrong with enjoying a small “cult” show. Nor is there anything wrong with people who do not like it. Watch what you want, don’t watch what you don’t want.

    I agree with MooresGalacicaRipOffSux.

The powers that be at the new “SyFy” channel have made it clear that they are not fans of real science fiction. They want to attract a “younger, hipper” audience. They have made a point at every chance they get to talk about how SGU and Caprica are not like that dorky stuff(the first two Stargate series, Farscape, etc) that made the the old Sci Fi channel successful in the first place. They certainly don’t want their new “edgy” dramas to be confused with Star Trek. So they made these two new shows because they want to be like the cool kids. The problem is, the cool kids still don’t want to watch sci fi and real fans of sci fi have been alienated.

I’ts true that the Dollhouse finale could have stolen quite a few viewers. I would wait a few weeks before worrying.

I am enjoying the show so far. I actually think that the pilot was better than the second episode, even though the pilot had a slower pace. I was so impressed that I have watched it probably 5 or 6 times since last April. I can’t understand how some people think it’s boring. I guess it it’s too subtle for some people. Not enough pew pew for everyone. I’m fine without the “‘splody space ships” and all of that.

At least we know that we’ll get at least 20 episodes of this. That’s almost as much as Dollhouse got in TWO seasons. (I also enjoyed Dollhouse quite a lot, and it never had a big audience.) I’ll enjoy Caprica no matter how long it (doesn’t) last!

For about ten years I was The SCIFI Channel’s most loyal viewer. After the name change and the strong indication by the suits at the new Syfy there will not likely ever be any more real Science Fiction on the channel other than it being a by product of some character-based drama, my loyalty has disappeared. The destruction of the Stargate franchise with the new Stargate Universe has only made it worse. My point is the core viewer for the channel is being changed and the ratings are beginning to show the trend. Caprica may be getting the backlash from others like me. I watched the Dollhouse final and recorded Caprica but actually watched it the second time later in the evening.

I guess I am interested in how they deal with all the ethical issues in Caprica and I do like several of the actors on the show. Defying Gravity (like Stargate Universe) put me to sleep several times but so far Caprica has kept me very interested and I am looking forward to the next episode.

I really do believe viewer anger is playing a part in lower ratings at Syfy. The channel just seems to be going in the wrong direction to keep me and several of my friends that were soft on their loyalty already have told me they never even look at what is on Syfy anymore. I think when Warehouse 13 returns to original episodes it may help to get a few viewers back but Syfy has lost more than they will ever admit. Wrestling and Ghost shows are taking a toll on the former core viewer loyalty without getting any consistent replacements. Maybe Comcast will see the problem and make a few changes to return the channel to its niche again?

I don’t like the reality shows on SyFy or that Stupid Ghost Hunters. I probably would be watching SCIFI at more in the evenings if they had something to offer other than that crap. They’re reairing Caprica’s 2nd episode tonight at 9pm but I’ve already rewatched it a couple of times.

They used to have better TV movies on the SyFy channel that now IMO are more like the old badly acted B horror movies of “Attack of the Mushroom People”.

I’ll also add that it’s unfortunate that they don’t have 2 hours of original programming now on Friday nights. Having reruns of Warehouse 13 (a show that I liked) is a bad idea in my opinion. They’ve typically had their 9-11pm EST Friday timeslots show original programming.

Where ratings are concerned, there are only a few relevant questions — BUT they have to be considered in context.

First: what is the total size of the TV broadcast/cable audience watching the tube on Friday nights now, as opposed to how big it was when the second episode of Battlestar Galactica on SciFi aired (Oct. 25, 2004) — or even, say, when the second episode of The X Files aired (Sept. 17, 1993)? I’ll bet there’s been a big decline, because people have 1) DVRs and other devices with which to record shows for later playback (and skip the ads), and 2) people have better things to do and lots of other choices of things to do, including watching downloaded DVDs, playing video games, and surfing the ‘net, than they did 17 years ago or even 6 years ago. It’s just a fact: the overall TV audience is smaller than it once was, as a percentage of total population. This means shows are fighting for a piece of a smaller pie.

Second, when you’re fighting for a share of a smaller total audience, that changes the way in which you must analyze viewer stats, particularly if you’re comparing current stats to historical stats. To forget that when comparing audiences is stupid if you’re a pro in the TV business because it means you’re thinking like an amateur.

Third, network execs and programmers are no longer willing to give a new program that might be a sleeper hit enough time to prove itself. They want instant success, or they pull the plug. Again, that’s stupid and betrays an amateur outlook: it demonstrates that they don’t understand what it takes to build an audience with staying power, meaning one that will stick with the program through not just the first season but will hang in into the second, and so forth. This is the same short-term mentality that plagues Wall Street, yet another reason why our economy runs upside-down instead of the way it should. Long-term results are what count, but try to tell that to someone who measures performance/ads/stats/whatever on a weekly or daily basis. Network execs and programmers are rabid with this disease.

Third, in judging TV/cable ratings, one must consider whether the network execs/show runners/programmers deliberately sabotaged their own shows by marketing them in such a way as to scare off the target audience (calling Defying Gravity ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ in space is a perfect example of intentionally idiotic marketing: how stupid was that if you wanted sci-fi fans or indie fans to watch?), underpromoting the shows, and/or intentionally dropping them into nonperforming time slots when few people are watching and/or the target audiences aren’t watching. If the network execs or programmers do even one of those things to a new show, they literally guarantee poor ratings (and then feel justified in dumping the show, as if they’d planned all along to do so, which isn’t a stretch to believe if the show is either expensive to produce or syndicated instead of a network product).

If you don’t take all these things into consideration when you look a ratings, you’re missing most of the story anhd can’t make an intelligent assessment. But then, sad to say, that’s not unusual in Hollywood, which isn’t exactly a hotbed of rationality …

I hope former LIFETIME CHANNEL exec Bonnie Hammer is proud of herself for taking the science fiction and fantasy out of the genre and saturating it with this soap opera garbage that fans of the genre have no interest in seeing. …but, she did get women who don;t even like true science fiction/fantasy to watch. GOOD JOB, BONNIE! This used to be my fav channel. It SUCKS now.

Btw, I thought I was getting my snacks ready to watch one of my fav shows of all time, THE X-FILES, at 2am and was horrified to see CAPRICA pop up on my tv. I, relunctantly sat through it all. To be honest, the f/x were amazing… the acting was good… the pacing was good for the first 15min, then it got really meandering, soapy and boring. …too much DALLAS and not enough THE SHIELD type drama, the latter, being my fav drama of all time.

…don’t get the terrorism stuff at all and how it fits into the overall story, but it’s early I guess. It’s just hard for me to get into a show, whose overall story (Galactica In Name Only) is known to be one huge, Deus Ex Machina mess, full of plot holes and characters that act wayy out of character, as it unfolds. If they hadn’t injected soapy drama into GINO and SGU, I would have been very open to a science fiction drama, if they had written it as it’s own entity, not attached to any pre-existing franchises. I don’t want my space fantasy/action shows turned into dramas or vice versa.

i was not a fan of the pilot – too “jankity.” but this show is not in any way shape or form designed to have the intensity of the BSG reimagining. the BSG that we are relating this to is a post apocolyptic, action filled dash across the universe – instead, this show focus’ on the most controversial part of the finale: the presence or emergence of god as an influencer in the behaviors of man.

there are some cultural pieces in there that are fascinating and some political threads but it seems to me that the primary driving plot line of interest will be the religous interpretations and the emergence of the cylon as a race. it will be drama driven with a hell of a lot fewer explosions and it may not be for the BSG fan.

after the pilot (which i watched last year) i was not sure i would be into the series. after last weeks episode i feel that many jumps in the quality of writing are working themselves out.

remember boxy? the writers figure these things out in time. i am concerned that the ratings are so low and they may prematurely impact the natural flow of the story. however, considering RDM’s writing style (which is a bit risky imho) he may need to deviate from the norm and really pull together a three year arch that is very clear.

as opposed to the episodic nature that RDM was used to on ST:TNG (ie. open ended,)begining every episode with the end in mind may not necessairly be a bad thing.

anyhoots – for my nickels worth it is certainly worth entertaining for the first short season.

They do that a lot with the Atlantis re-runs. I try to tune in for those to support the ratings even though I own them on dvd. They make it hard though. I’d be good it Atlantis just came on at 5,6, or 7pm everyday.

I think they do it to try to get you to watch other shows. They show something they think or know people will like and then you get used to the routine and tune in to watch it, boom, another show has taken its place indefinitely. I don’t know how that’s working for them, but it’s their network.

I feel the same way I felt about Caprica a while ago when I saw the pilot. It’s so-so. I’ll give it a couple of more tries, but I really don’t think I’ll be watching it for the rest of the season like LOST. That was good tv.

I’m surprised. Where’s the Syfy press release saying that Caprica had its second best night in history? I miss a good Syfy press release. I feel deprived.

Gino: Galactica In Name Only sucked. Crapica sucks only slightly less and Ron Moore is still the most talentless guy in television. Thank God they’re making a Real Galactica movie based on the classic BSG. We need some entertaining, wholesome science fiction.

I liked BSG; the ending could have been better- say..if everyone turn out to be a Cylon. But Caprica needs more action, is just a chick flick at the moment talk, talk… For goodness sake.. the girls (avatars) are boring! not even sexy.. is this show for 10 year olds?!! and Adama is a douche bag.. corrupt lawyer? was He not supposed to be a great man? or was that just the memories of Commander Adama? Anyway, I ‘ll give it a couple of more episodes but not hopeful..is like watching an afternoon soap-opera like General Hospital or something.. hey how about if they get Greyson to produce few hundred Centurions – not this crap of a girly robot!!

I’m willing to give the show a chance. I liked BSG, and I trust Ron Moore to do something great with the show. I prefer serialized shows, and that’s what this is.

I do admit that it is moving slowly so far, but I still think the show h as potential. Unfortunately, it’s not off to a fast ratings start, and therefore is probably doomed.

I’m willing to give the show a chance. I liked BSG, and I trust Ron Moore to do something great with the show. I prefer serialized shows, and that’s what this is.

What’s hurting SGU and Caprica more than anything is the lack of action. Which SGU episode from the first 1/2 season is generally considered the best? The one where they’re all running around on an alien planet shooting giant alien slugs that tear through your flesh… and that episode wasn’t even focused on the “real” timeline characters.

The same thing happened to BSG too. After they left New Caprica the show got slow and people started losing interest. The mutany plot near the end of season 4 was probably the most popular 2 episodes because it was fast-paced with a lot going on.

That’s all these shows need right now. Get everybody up doing something and they’ll be fine.

Yeah, they have to get some action on this show. there’s wwaaaay too much talking going on. Do something – no, NOT the Graystones gettin’ busy again. Gross!

Oh, for God sake, why Pat Oswalt?? I absolutely HATE that guy. He is so unfunny, it hurts.

I believe that the real problem is that we live in a world of instant gratification. Even with action-based movies, the audience expects the next one to be more “more” action-packed for the sake of keeping audiences’ attention, even if that means the story suffers. Action now takes precedence over good story-telling. I find the world of Caprica intriguing. And I’m a huge Stargate Universe as well. With Defying Gravity, it took me until the episode in the US where they revealed what beta was for me to finally feel committed to the show, but I faithfully watched every week knowing eventually there would be something that clicked; it was a shame they didn’t air any more (although I do know I can see those episodes on DVD). After reading where the writers wanted to take us in season 2 of that series, I was even more disappointed it wasn’t given more time to develop. Because I loved the remake of BSG (after protesting the creation of such for a long time), I am more cautious about judging shows based on limited information. I consider a pilot that has been out for a very long time and 2 fresh episodes very limited information. Stargate Universe may be less watched live, but it was rated in the top 10 shows (number 5, in fact) shows that are DVR’d.

HAHAHAHA!! “Instant gratification?” SyFy Channel has been sucking for several years, since Bonnie Hammer, the ex-LIFETIME CHANNEL exec, took over and has been running it into the ground, by trying to convince fans of the genre, that real science fiction is more the garbage that she was used to peddling at LIFETIME CHANNEL: Chick flick, boring, trash soap opera drama. No thanks, Bonnie!
