Scoreboard FOX CBS ABC NBC Uni CW
Rating: Adults 18-49 6.0/15 3.3/9 2.6/7 1.6/4 1.5/4 0.6/1
Rating: Adults 18-34 4.8/14 2.2/6 2.2/6 1.3/4 1.6/5 0.6/2
Total Viewers (million) 16.97 12.15 6.99 5.73 3.88 1.14

FOX easily won the night  across the major demographics and total viewing on the strength of an hour of American Idol which has remained very strong, dropping only around 5 percent versus the same night last season.   Idol was up 22 percent versus last Wednesday (though last Wednesday was a “Road to Hollywood” special).

Human Target was up very slightly from a 2.4 last week to a 2.5 last night.

CBS was second for the night with both adults 18-49 and viewers.  Its 8pm comedy block was resoundingly bested by a Charlie Brown Valentine special and The Middle, but Criminal Minds stood tall even against a strong American Idol, and CSI: NY won the 10pm hour increasing from last week by about 5 percent.

ABC’s sitcoms The Middle and Modern Family saw increases from last week, with The Middle reaching a 3.0 rating with adults 18-49, a series high.  Modern Family matched it previous highs with adults 18-49.

The Middle vs. Cougar Town seems like a silly discussion to me.  The Middle, doesn’t have to air against American Idol and Cougar Town does.  Still the steep drop from Modern Family to Cougar Town is notable (4.2 to 2.8).

Ugly Betty saw growth to a 1.7 rating at 10pm, its best numbers of the season, but it still lost to a repeat of Law & Order: SVU (which did about 18% better than the average for The Jay Leno Show in the timeslot).

In Late-Night:

  • Conan O’Brien (0.8/4 in 18-49 in local people meters with an encore telecast) trailed CBS’s first-run LATE SHOW (1.2/5) in Nielsen’s 25 local markets with People Meters.
  • At 12:35 a.m., Jimmy Fallon (0.4/3 in 18-49 in local people meters ) trailed CBS’s LATE LATE SHOW (0.6/4).

Definitions:

Fast Affiliate Ratings: These first national ratings, including demographics, are available at approximately 11 AM (ET) the day after telecast, and are released to subscribing customers daily. These data, from the National People Meter sample, are strictly time-period information, based on the normal broadcast network feed, and include all programming on the affiliated stations, sometimes including network programming, sometimes not. The figures may include stations that did not air the entire network feed, as well as local news breaks or cutaways for local coverage or other programming. Fast Affiliate ratings are not as useful for live programs and are likely to differ significantly from the final results, because the data reflect normal broadcast feed patterns. For example, with a World Series game, Fast Affiliate Ratings would include whatever aired from 8-11PM on affiliates in the Pacific Time Zone, following the live football game, but not game coverage that begins at 5PM PT. The same would be true of Presidential debates as well as live award shows and breaking news reports.

Rating: Estimated percentage of the universe of TV households (or other specified group) tuned to a program in the average minute. Ratings are expressed as a percent.

Share (of Audience): The percent of households (or persons) using television who are tuned to a specific program, station or network in a specific area at a specific time. (See also, Rating, which represents tuning or viewing as a percent of the entire population being measured.)

Time Shifted Viewing – Program ratings for national sources are produced in three streams of data – Live, Live+Same Day (Live+SD) and Live+7 Day. Time shifted figures account for incremental viewing that takes place with DVRs which are currently in approximately 24.4% of all U.S. TV households. Live+Same Day (Live+SD) include viewing during the same broadcast day as the original telecast, with a cut-off of 3:00AM local time when meters transmit daily viewing to Nielsen for processing. Live+7 Day ratings include incremental viewing that takes place during the 7 days following a telecast.

Lux repeated only a tenth down from Monday. I estimated mid 9′s for Idol… dang I’m good. Vs last week, it looks like Idol took a bite out of Criminal Minds, not Modern Family. CBS’ post Super Bowl boost has ended.

Interesting that Life Unexpected’s repeat airing gets numbers so close to what its originals get on Monday. That has to mean there’s real potential in this show.

ABC made a smart investment with the rights to the Charlie Brown specials.
Middle, Mod Fam, and CT are all holding up better than I thought they would with the AI comp. LUX had another good run of it too for a repeat.

@Pat, I doubt ABC will switch Cougar Town and The Middle around. ABC must be happy with hitting a 3.0 in the 8PM hour not to mention that 8PM is a more of a family friend hour and The Middle fits that time slot; Cougar Town’s content is better suited for 9:30.

Cougar Town is fast becoming the weak link of the ABC comedy block, assuming you discount the already cancelled Ugly Betty. Its situation is made even worse by The Middle’s growth and the fact its got the Modern Family lead-in.

Elsewhere Modern Family and Criminal Minds both held up really well against Idol. And despite the less than fantastic numbers I’m still leaning toward a Human Target renewal for next year.

Oops I misread the numbers and meant to say Idol did not affect Modern Family or Criminal Minds. Idol is up TWO WHOLE POINTS from last week yet Modern Family is up THREE TENTHS. Steady Criminal Minds posted identical numbers, which is notable. Heck, you put Criminal Minds up against the Super Bowl and I bet it’d hold that same 3.8 and 14.8 million viewers! Kidding, but you get the point… apparently a lot of people watch only one thing on broadcast TV, or on Wednesday at least, and that is American Idol.

Well then, I guess Human Target is going to stay at 8pm. At least, even if the numbers are weak, it still won the 8pm time slot, that can’t be bad

Cougar town is pretty weak, but it never has been has strong as Modern family, which will stick around like two and a half men, for like the next 10 years

How long is the CW going to air repeats? Its been what 3 months since the last new episode of 90210 and Melrose place? That’s quite a strange tactic…

The Middle is not against Idol, which I think is why it’s lower than Cougar Town. And the last 30 minutes of Idol are the more important part– so a lot of people switch over at that point.

I’m not sure how you can spin CT losing viewers compared to last week, despite AI being way up, when both more viewers were watching TV and their lead in also went up vs AI. I wasn’t sold on CT before the season, and ABC may come to regret the early renewal.

And come on HT – Mercy and a LUX repeat were up 0.2, yet all you could manage was a 0.1 increase? Talk about a show with a low ceiling.

Old Christine was great last night. It just goes to show they don’t need any elaborate quest stars to spice up the storylines, like they tried to do with Eric McCormack and pretty much failed.
A huge plus for Christine for not making it a Valentine’s episode (I’m getting really tired of those) and on the negative side, they really need to learn the meaning of the word “continuity”!
The numbers aren’t so hot but better than last few weeks. I’m kind of worried that Gary beat it in the demo and the viewership for the first time (correct me if I’m wrong). Still, to come second in a pretty unflattering timeslot – gotta count for something.

Yay for The Middle and MF as well, yay for CT drop!

And I say this again, The CW should just be shut down and all its primetime programming shifted to NBC because now they have like 5 primetime hours free.

@Stefan Two things. First, Christine did beat Gary in viewers, all other sites are reporting 8.3 million. And two, CW is owned half-half by CBS and WB – that’s a better indication of where programming would go if it were to be shut down, which it won’t.

Other than “Samantha Who,” when’s the last time ABC had a sitcom get picked up for a 2nd full season? Now they have 3. That’s impressive regardless of which outperforms which.

I can’t really count “Samantha Who” because it never seemed like it had a regular timeslot. It was always tossed after a 90-minute “Dancing with the Stars” and never had a chance to pair up with another sitcom and create a good block.

If ABC had renewed it for ’09-10 for midseason, it could have replaced “Hank” (or the timeslots could have been shuffled) and I think ABC would have yet another sitcom in the 3.0 range now. Then they’d have it made in the shade for building comedy blocks for the next couple seasons.

Enough of The Cougar Town bashing. It’s against AI! The Middle is not! The CT numbers are actually really good. Are they MF nbers? No, but ABC must be thrilled with both. Also, CT has grown and become a critical success as well. The show is great.
I like the middle but it’s no where as valuable to ABC as CT is.

@Klove That’s true that it is not against AI, but look at the growth of Modern Family in the demo against Idol vs last week, then the drop-off to CT. The second half hour wasn’t of any particular significance in last night/last week’s Idol, either.

I can not believe how bad Weds. nights are, why doesn’t NBC move Chuck and Parenthood to Weds. Chuck would score at least 3.0 and 9 million if it was on Weds at 8pm. The competition at 8pm CBS NAOOC, tried to watch just bad, ABC Charlie Brown special good if I was ten, and on Fox Human Target good show, but its still knew. Mercy is just painful to watch. Mondays I DVR 5 shows and watch live two other shows. On Weds. I DVR Human Target. Come on!

Samuel, 90210 and Melrose are back on the 9th March, ANTM returns 3rd March, LUX moves to 8pm to lead in GG on 8th March. Supernatural and VD go on a 6 week hiatus after Feb 11th to return 25th March. So it’ll be swapping a night of repeats from Tuesday to Thursdays! I think Smallville will be dissapearing for a few weeks too but I’m not sure!

I wonder if the fact that ABC’s comedies at 8pm block (repeat and “Middle”) beating CBS comedies ‘Old Christine’ and ‘Gary’ spell doom for the Wednesday sitcom block on CBS. If all candidates for that Wednesday spot are either “on the bubble” (according to the Renew/Cancel index), why not cancel them all and replace with a new drama? May be better audience flow anyway.

Also: ABC’s success sort of kills CBS’ excuse of “Weds. 8pm is a slow hour.” Albeit it’s not a strong hour, but it basically shows that it’s also not as weak as CBS thought.

People need to stop using the “Up against American Idol” line to describe Cougar Town’s ratings. If the show was any good then it would of done Just fine against A.I like Modern Family and Criminal Minds. Also ABC promote Cougar Town way more then The Middle and it has a strong Lead in while The Middle basically starts off the night. I can see The Middle becoming a hit unlike Cougar Town, I only see that show getting midway through the second season before people start to get bored with the show.

    @ Acey:
I didn’t see the edit on the Christine ratings. Wow, this is higher than most episodes of last season even. I know, it doesn’t make a difference but still – yay :)

And as far as I recall, Christine was doing A-OK on Mondays. CBS’s shabby treating of the show has led to these poor ratings.
I mean, this is a show that gets virtually no buzz. Just try typing New Christine on Google, you’ll get significantly less results than for HIMYM, 2 1/2 Men or TBBT – ALL CBS shows, I might add.

I am so glad for the middle as right from the beginning I have been saying that it is my favorite new comedy of the season in spite of my not being a Patricia Heaton fan! The kids on that show are just great.

The little show that keeps chugging forward especially now the Hank is not its lead-in!

I actually thought that last nights Modern Family was the funniest one so far!

CBS Finishes First Week of February Sweep with Dominating Lead
    **************************************************************

CBS finished the first week of the February Sweep with a dominating lead over the other networks that is expected to diminish over the course of the four weeks as the ‘Super Bowl’ stunt is averaged out.

FOX came in a healthy second with averages that are likely to hold through the Sweep as FOX is planning to stick with originals. The poor beleaguered Peacock network had a ghastly opening Sweep week, and cannot wait for the ‘Winter Olympics’ to commence tomorrow night as it needs a transfusion of A18-49s that always flock to the Olympics in large numbers.

ABC remained stable to last year, while The CW has seen a big boost in its numbers, largely due to the elimination of low-rated Sunday night programming (now replaced by low-rated Tuesday and Wednesday programming).

Nota Bene -> Last years February Sweep was measured March 5 to April 1, 2009 due to the pending DTV conversion. The 2009 ‘Super Bowl’ was not part of the Sweep as it occurred in February, and the 2010 ‘Winter Olympics’ do not have a 2009 comparable either.

    Modern Family is awesome.

Cougar Town appears to more a niche audience, so of course it’s ratings will be a bit lower AND it’s up against Idol, but I still think Cougar Town deserves a lot of support. It’s become a very good show with a full ensemble, it’s not just a Courtney Cox Vanity Project.

With regards to The Middle…I’m very “meh” on it. I think it’s because I’ve seen it somewhere before…hmmmm, where was it again? Oh yes, when it was called “MALCOM IN THE MIDDLE”. It is such a rip off of Malcolm and here’s why:

    1. The weird youngest son, Brick, is a CARBON COPY rip-off of the weird youngest son Dewey on Malcolm.

    2. A very similar looking house complete with similar brown scrubby non-existent front yard.

    3. Malcolm had a mean, weird grandma (Cloris Leachman) – The Middle has the weird mean old aunt.

    4. The mom is very put-upon and overworked and frazzled in the same way like Malcom’s mom. Lois was a not very good employee at a supermarket, Frankie is a not very good employee at a car dealership.

    5. The dad is a Slacker who doesn’t do much – much like Hal on Malcolm.

ETC ETC ETC. That’s why I don’t like the Middle.

    Go Cougartown and Modern Family!

  • Ryan

Charlie Brown you are not so unlcuky and Modern Family you can really stand up to American Idol

I’m so upset that more people aren’t watching Mercy. It has really become a terrific show, and last night’s episode was especially great.

If only NBC would promote it…

I cheer everytime I see the numbers for Criminal Minds. Awesome to maintain strong ratings on a very competive night. The episodes even do well in repeats.

Lux continues to repeat well especially when you look at how GG repeated last night. Seemed to be a lot of repeats last night, figured repeats wouldn’t officially started again until Friday.

Am I misremembering earlier data, or is Ferguson beating Fallon a lot more soundly as of late? Think CBS got a 0.7 out of Ferguson yesterday, which is the highest I can remember him ever reaching since I started paying attention, then he beats Fallon by 0.2 today.

Is this just a factor of Fallon having repeats as a lead in? Or is this a sign of things to come?

Or am I way off base and the ratings have been like this before?

  • CrimsonV

It’s a pity that LUX’s Wednesday repeat numbers can’t be included in the Renew/Cancel Index. If I’m not mistaken, a 0.8 repeat is as good/better than a Vampire Diaries repeat. It will be interesting to see how LUX fairs during the Olympics with slightly less competition.

Alan is right about The Middle, but forgot the most important thing. It’s not half as good as Malcolm.
Malcolm was very original and a fresh breeze for network comedy when it started. The Middle feels more like a traditional sitcom. That being said…I like some of the supporting characters but sadly Patricia Heatons main character is extremly boring. Especially the part about her job.

Cougar Town is no Modern Family or The Office but it is finding it’s own thing and got a lot better over the weeks.

Schmoker, for the last weeks Fallon’s lead-in has been Tonight Show reruns. I don’t think these numbers are worthy of much scrutiny until the report for the week of March 1 (when I imagine there will be LOT of scrutiny). Those numbers probably won’t be particularly meaningful either. How things look once Jay has been back in his old slot for a month or two will probably be more telling.

I am wondering if FOX will move Idol back to 8:00 on Wednesday sometime soon. Afterall, they get the same excellent ratings anywhere they put it, and by airing it at 8:00, at least it provides a lead-in for another show – and even if that lead-in just gives a small boost, it’s still a boost.

It appears that their main reason to air it at 9:00 was to destroy the competition. That’s not happening though. So wouldn’t it make sense to move it back to 8:00 where, at least it would appear, that they would have an even more successful night.

And SVU’s performance at 9:00 and 10:00 (even though repeats) really does show that NBC can expect their numbers to go up when they start airing at 10:00. Sure it is going up against CSI: NY, but at least that is not as competitive as the 9:00 hour where it clearly just sinks. I think it’s smart though that NBC not move it back to Tuesday at 10:00, because they should give the Biggest Loser lead-in to a newer show.

Lastly, are all the networks airing repeats against the Olympics? I notice that CBS is. Does anyone know what the usual ratings are for the Winter Olympics? How will CBS’s choice to air repeats affect them, since it is the Febrary sweeps?

Great numbers for ABC. Betty was chokingly hysterical last night (I had to rewind several times), and so was Modern Family. My problem with MF? ABC ruins the best jokes by promoing them to death! Stop it, ABC, please.

Those numbers for Old Christine represent (I believe) its best viewer numbers ever on Wednesday. To be honest, it’s not ratings too much lower than it did on Mondays at this point. Those two shows are remarkable consistent.

Now that we can think about next season, ABC’s in a unique position in that it actually has building blocks for a comedy line-up, which hasn’t happened since Wednesday nights in 1998/99 before Millionaire ruined everything. I know that ABC will be tempted to move The Middle to 8pm, but I’d suggest 9:30pm for half-a-season (at least) to strengthen it, then a move to 8pm. I’m still not a fan of the show (Heaton is totally miscast), but it’s obviously catching on with viewers after an extremely slow start. The Middle and Modern Family represent ABC’s future.

As for Cougar Town, ABC really jumped the renewal ball there. I know that this website rails against “retentionistas” at times, but if Modern Family can do a 4.2 against Idol, the 9:30 show be able to do at least mid-3s. A 2.8 with that lead-in is really unacceptable, and more importantly, CT has a downward trend, while MF’s trend is upwards. Impressively, MF is performing about as well as Lost did (last season), with the same competition.

In the fall, without Idol, MF should be touching high 4s or even low 5s in the demo, and The Middle afterwards should do similar numbers. Since CT is renewed (ABC could rescind that), it could be paired with the Matthew Perry project for 8pm, even though the content might be a little iffy for the early hour. If the 8pm shows don’t work, mid-season, move The Middle to 8pm and surround it and MF with other family sitcoms. Wednesdays solved.

Fox executives should know by now that American Idol can’t knock Modern Family off the primetime schedule. Modern Family is here to stay. The only value of placing American Idol on Wednesdays at 9:00 pm is to destroy any ABC show at 9:30 pm. If Cougar Town’s ratings continue to drop and remain below 2.7 in the A 18-49 demo, FOX will have succeeded.

Does anyone know whats happening with Charlie Sheens court case thingy? If he does go to jail, I would think this would be CBS’ new Monday night schedule:

    9:00: The Big Bang Theory
9:30: How I Met Your Mother

I enjoy Cougar Town. More and more so since they seem to have forgotten what the show’s title is.

With Courtney Cox as a 40-something divorcee on the prowl for young guys, the show was weak. As a character-based sitcom about her immediate circle and their lives, it’s rather entertaining.

Nice numbers for Old Christine last night – a season high! It came at a good time, too; it really needs to continue with that kind of 18-49 demo numbers if it wants a chance at being renewed!

People talk about taking back Cougar Town’s renewal but you have to think about a few things: It is against AI and still gets good A18-34 demos; it is the only wednesday comedy produced by ABC (international and DVD money); and they are going to go for a lot of promotion next year with Matthew Perry’s Mr. Sunshine. They won’t pass that up. I think it should get 3 at least but, I don’t think ABC is worried enough to take back it’s renewal.

LUX is fine. It actually tends to average BETTER than the other CW dramas when you take into account how well it repeats.

Example, let’s say CW licenses an episode of LUX and Gossip Girl each and then airs each episode multiple times over the course of the season. This week over two airings of the same episode of LUX it has averaged .85 in 18-49. GG may pull in an average 1.1/1.2 in 18-49, but all the reruns tend to pull 0.3/0.4 — so it averages down to about .7-.8 over multiple airings.

I’d like to see the W18-34 numbers but I’d say LUX is pretty safe. What also needs to be considered is that LUX is a younger show (the other CW offerings are fairly old other than TVD. LUX has critical appeal and some actual buzz. It seems to be building a word of mouth. It’s also been said to be the cheapest CW drama. I’d say renewal prospects are fairly solid for now.

Melrose Place tends to get 0.7/0.8 for originals — which doesn’t look much worse than LUX. Compare the rerun ratings and it tells a much different story. MP is lucky to score .3 18-49 in a rerun. LUX nearly tripled that. It’s not going anywhere.

In regards to CBS Wednesdays, I’ve arrived at this conclusion about American Idol at 9 pm. CM doing well against Idol is good news as it gives them a couple of options moving forward. Using the success of CBS Tuesdays as the basis of my argument, I would imagine CBS would prefer the following things in the coming fall: a) putting Criminal Minds 2 in a slot that gives it the best chance to succeed b) keeping CSI:NY on Wednesday, and c) having CM2 follow CM. So initially the Wednesday that made the most sense to me was

    8 pm – Criminal Minds
    9 pm – Criminal Minds 2
    10 pm – CSI:NY

But what happens if CM2 does not pull a Mentalist/NCIS:LA and post big numbers right off the bat? At 9 pm it could run into some trouble with ABC then Idol in midseason if FOX so chooses to leave it there. They could do this

    8 pm – CSI:NY
    9 pm – Criminal Minds
    10 pm – Criminal Minds 2

Then does that leave Hawaii for Sundays? Or maybe Hawaii goes with CM. CBS has got to have a pretty big shuffle coming up… by CBS standards anyway, because a lot of things aren’t making sense right now; I have way more questions than this network has had answers.

I watched Human Target for the first time last week and was not impressed. However, several people said it was a weak episode, so I gave it another chance. Last night’s episode was decent and moved along at a nice clip. Now I can see the appeal.
But as always, what does this show mean for Fringe and Lie to Me?

CBS will not move Criminal Minds from Wednesday at 9 pm. It is doing remarkably well against American Idol and I don’t see CBS risking that to put Criminal Minds Spin-Off against Idol. Kinda like how CBS will keep NCIS on at Tuesdays at 8 because of how it holds up against Idol.

I also think Christine will be renewed. Gary could go either way, it really depends on how Accidentally on Purpose does on Wednesdays.

These are the ratings Old Christine needs to continue getting in order for it to be renewed. In terms of viewership, I believe this was the highest rated episode of the series since spring 2008, although the demo was lower. Still, that’s a huge brightspot for the show. If it can keep this up, I can’t see CBS cancelling it.

But, I think CBS’ 2 hour comedy block on Wednesdays is now non-existant. Criminal Minds does great at 9pm, and CSI:NY does well at 10pm. Although I wouldn’t mind seeing CSI:NY go to Sundays, these 2 shows work very well where they are now.

All this talk of comedies, I’m getting increasingly worried about Charlie Sheen and Two and a Half Men. There’s a strong possibility that he may be going to jail. And if that does indeed happen, where does that leave Men? Do they continue it without Charlie, or do they put on an indefinite hiatus? I mean, I think the lineup could easily continue without it, and when Men does continue with Charlie (which, in reality, could be up to 3 years down the line), ratings would be HUGE.

LUX repeated very well for the CW, almost as good as its original airing figures. I think that being a family show, 8pm suits it better. Its combined figure is 3.64 and 1.7 demo, making it one of the more popular shows on the CW, as i believe alot of people just skip Monday cos they know its on wednesday. Time will tell when it moves to 8pm monday and the wednesday night airings stop thanks to ANTM, if its as big as the Vampire Diaries for the CW as the combines figure is suggesting. Go Modern Family, best comedy to come out of the states and deserves those figures

The Community show runner made another comment about this site today on E! online:
What about season two? A pickup for Community seems likely, but what kind of signals and code words have you heard from the powers that be?

“I see that our score that never changes on TVbythenumbers.com turned green. [Laughs.] The reason it turned green is because they picked up Parks and Recreation, and it’s like, well, so in other words, TV not so much by the numbers really. Just sort of TV by the same thing we all do it by, which is, every day is a new day, and we don’t know what the hell is going to happen.”

Obviously, unless they completely revamp CT, it will not air at eight EST. Anybody who claims retention of viewers doesn’t matter in this case is just wrong, I think. I think the show will be changed next year – new characters, maybe, major new plot twists. I stopped watching it, but if smgpugfaw is correct and the show is less trashy and one-note, good for them. I do like Coutrney and I think she deserves better.

@Tumbleweeds, @Johnny: say it with me, “metered markets”…

…#25 (Charlotte), #28 (Raleigh-Durham), #36 (Greenville-Asheville), #46 (Greensboro) – totalling appx 3.5 million households, per slightly old data, but it’s ours, gosh darn it all:

So, even if all the metered markets’ CBS affiliates went blue last night, perhaps 0.1 decrease in the demo…

Everyday we know exactly what’s going to happen, we know NBC is going to perpetually suck day in and day out, and apparently continue sucking until Comcast gets ‘em on cable. This guy is delusional.

Acey – you’re wrong no matter which way things go…

…either NBC will continue to suck in perpetuity, even after Comcast gets ‘em on cable…

…or, like Brett Favre in the Hyundai Super Bowl commercial, Sam Watterston will have been in the DA’s office for 50 years on the National Broadcasting Company, and getting 4.0 demos…

    …either way, you’re wrong…

…and either way, Van Buren will eventually become a captain before L&O ends, I pray (I have lit enough candles to burn Dresden and Tokyo again!)

Acey – have you checked the ratings for the CBS morning show, evening news, and Faze the Nation recently?

NBC may do huge suckage in prime time, but they make nice money and ratings in these areas, so “perpetually suck” is slightly harsh, isn’t it :D

My reviews for last nights shows:

The New Adventures of Old Christine–8/10
    The Middle–7/10
    Mercy–9/10
    Modern Family–9/10
    Cougar Town–8.5/10
    Ugly Betty–7/10

That was the funniest episode of Modern Family yet, in my opinion.

I really wish that more people would start watching Mercy! Its really a great show.

So ABC seems to be finding out what kind of comedies the general public is drawn to or hasn’t seen in a while. Family shows that have equal parts laughs & heart. The CBS comedies are successful on Mondays but all seem more sex driven and laugh tracks included. The way that Modern Family combines the two is phenomenal. Love to see that there can be success for comedies without laugh tracks and that has a potential for a bigger audience because you don’t have to put the kids to bed or watch it when they aren’t around.

I have never seen “Malcom in the Middle” so I could care less if “The Middle” is like it. I love “The Middle” and like it when they are out of the house. My favorite show was the “Beer” one.
Since I “used” to have a family member working at a car dealer I enjoy those shows a lot. It’s at the best time slot “family” and Cougar should stay where its at. I hope Shelly Long becomes a regular on
Modern Family. I am ABC all night long.

    What would improve The Middle?

In the vamp, a cropduster, a tanker truck full of gasoline, and Cary Grant…notice the similarities between the Middle’s vamp and the establishing shot of that famous scene from North by Northwest?

…other than that, it’s an excellent show :)

I’m impressed with Modern Family’s performance, imagine if there was no Idol, it could have hit 4.5 but still I’m glad with the performance.

The Middle, yay! I know this will grow eventually, the show ain’t groundbreaking but it’s a show people could relate to. Yes, it’s similar with Malcom in the Middle but Malcolm is zanier and over-the-top and The Middle is more grounded, I like both shows though. I like Brick more than Dewey though :D

I like Cougar Town but I admit the numbers are not that great but I think it still a good rating against Idol.

There was a discussion on Sepinwall’s blog that says the title might be hurting the show. The show is not about Jules sleeping around with young men anymore but more of an ensemble comedy with Jules and the people that surround her. Anyway, I hope the ratings would pick up.

LUX repeat airings on par with the original, that says something indeed. It gave me little hope about the show’s chances for renewal :D

Good numbers for Christine. Crossing my fingers for renewal. It’s an average sitcom at best but I like the characters so I hope it could stay

@ the speculations about CBS fall Weds: Those are not moves that will likely be happening. Particularly the moving of a CSI to the 8PM “family” time slot. Not realistic.

Cougar Town: The show is doing very well in young female viewers. That is one of the most important demo groups to all of the broadcasters. Women in 18-34/18-49 are still considered by advertisers to be the primary decision makers in terms of purchasing home related goods (cleaning supplies, soap, food, diapers, etc.), which are big advertisers on TV. That alone makes it a valuable asset.

If CBS was serious about having a 2nd comedy block, it would move 2 1/2 men to another night with something else. It is an aging show, but still strong enough to carry enough viewers with it. HIMYM, TBBT and one of the others are more than capable of keeping Mon going.

@ Lucky if CBS was serious about a second comedy block, they wouldn’t move any of their best three sitcoms away from Monday night, they wouldn’t want to screw up like NBC did inthe wake of Seinfeld finishing, they moved Frasier away from the 9pm Thursday timeslot and threw Will and Grace at 9pm… which was in its like second season at the time. If they are serious about a second comedy night, they will develop a show at 8:30pm, then move it to Wednesday 8pm.

In regard to Cougar Town, someone said before Idol moved to 9pm that Modern Family wouldn’t be effected too much by Idol, because the end of the Idol episode is what most people are interested in, and I think Cougar Town is taking the brunt of the steam train.
