The Olympics End, Broadcast TV Returns!

Back in August 2008 when Michael Phelps was winning gold medal after gold medal, it was fun and for a TV ratings blog, it was a break from the monotony of the summer broadcast  network schedule of repeats, reality shows and summer burn off.

The winter Olympics winds up being quite a bit the same: a broadcast network schedule of repeats, reality shows and crap to stuff to burn off while the Olympics are on.   We’re used to that sort of thing in the summer, but we’re not accustomed to repeats of NCIS and The Big Bang Theory, Modern Family and House in February.  So rather than breaking up the ratings monotony, the winter Olympics helps create it.

Thank goodness for Lost and cable shows.  There were days when the only new programming on the broadcast schedule were the Olympics and American Idol.

But broadcast TV comes roaring back this week, and NBC in particular will have a new face.

Before the week is up we’ll have our first data on:

  • How The Marriage Ref fared after the Olympics closing ceremony
  • How NBC fares at 10pm post Jay Leno
  • How Jay Leno fares at 11:35p post Conan
  • How the Parenthood premiere fares
  • How The Marriage Ref fares Thursday in its normal timeslot

But it’s not all about NBC.  It’s also about new episodes of NCIS and The Big Bang Theory,  and of course, Chuck.  Up against the first hour of The Bachelor’s season finale House is actually still a repeat on Monday night, perhaps a bit of good news for Chuck.

We’re entering the home stretch.  Twelve or thirteen more good weeks of broadcast television before the summer season is upon us.  There will be no Olympics this summer, but plenty of repeats, reality and summer burn off.

Enjoy the next few months.

I miss the sitcoms! Glad to see them all back this week :D

Can’t wait to see how PARENTHOOD performs. Also looking forward to the return of V and Flashforward. And also Glee vs. Lost in April :D

  • Dario

I missed NBC :) This schedule is great.

  • SanDiegoInExile

Are those really two-hour L+O and SVU episodes? Or is it more “clever” NBC marketing with two episodes back-to-back on M+W? Or a new episode followed by an unadvertised rerun (“It’s new to you”)? I don’t think SVU has ever had a two-hour episode, although 2 hours of Kathy Griffin chasing Olivia Benson might be memorable…..

  • Vladimir Putin

No mention that NBC cut off the olympic closing ceremony to show the Marriage Ref holocaust?

The Law & Orders are playing two new episodes each.

  • http://life-2000.blogspot.com Dingo

    NBC’s schedule Sunday was:

    7-10:30 Closing Ceremony
    10:30-11 Marriage Ref preview
    11-11:30 Late local news
    11:30-12:30 Olympic After Party
    12:30-4 Closing Ceremony encore

I am looking forward to seeing how NBC does. The schedule is as solid as it can be for NBC and the least they could do is go into next season with some positive momentum.

  • Tariq

i;m still pissed at NBC for not setting a premiere date for persons unknown hopefully they’ll premiere it in May or something in season would help if something else on their schedule super flopped

  • Daniel C

The fact that I didn’t see even one promo for Chuck over two Olympic weeks does not instill a great deal of confidence in the shows future. NBC should be smart for a change, and move it to USA where it might have a chance.

  • Nick V

Do people really care about the family history of celebrities? Just seems like an atrocious idea to me.

Looking forward to finally seeing Parenthood though. Critics actually seem to be responding positively to it. Between that, SVU, the comedies, and Celebrity Apprentice in two weeks, I’ll be watching quite a bit of NBC this spring.

  • leonpwhirl

    finally…

  • Holly

The fact that I didn’t see even one promo for Chuck over two Olympic weeks does not instill a great deal of confidence in the shows future.

I saw a few. No, there wasn’t a big push and they didn’t have Chuck ads everywhere, but that doesn’t mean they’ve given up on the show. In fact, they’d be stupid to focus on Chuck when they have 3 new shows and several schedule changes starting this week.

On the topic of the post—Yay! discussions about actual ratings instead of “well, the Olympics won, but that repeat of show X didn’t do so bad”

  • ryan

    GO CHUCK

  • andrew

THE only good thing on NBC is Chuck. Well acted, well written and well produced.
WHY is it on Mondays to lead in serious minded L and O ?

Chuck should be the start of a thursday night light hearted lineup.

  • Jenna

Mercy Mercy Mercy Mercy Mercy Mercy Mercy Mercy comes back!!!!!

  • rob

So happy TV is going back to normal and NBC will be back at the bottom though they will probably come 3rd tonight with House on FOX being a repeat. ABC will win tonight with Bachelor finale with CBS coming a strong 2nd.

  • Remus

I’m also pissed about there being no Persons Unknown! It’s the most interesting new show they’ve had in years and they’re just shelving it?? Crazy.

  • http://USA carmen

    Andrew,

The PETA and SPCA people would be up in arms if they moved Chuck to Thursdays.

  • Dan

    @ Carmen.. lolwut?

  • Frank

Parenthood will debut big. Why? 3reasons. The Olympics promotion, the positive buzz and the fact that the Biggest Loser is it’s lead in.

  • William Hughes

    Back to my DVDs! :D

  • http://lyciasoft.com Ogla Sungutay

love the Olympics but it was about time. Finally…

  • http://lyciasoft.com Ogla Sungutay

And nice touch with the Good Wife shot. It’s a great show that needs more promotion.

  • Stefan

    FINALLY! :)

It’s not only NBC that’s bringing scripted TV back, CBS is too. Nice to see the only show I actually watch on NBC (30 Rock) isn’t gonna be airing this week :D

I’m still looking forward to Parenthood though.

  • Lisa

I’m glad the Olympics are over, because most of the winter sports were so BORING. Curling, luge, bobsled, hockey, blah! A little of the skiing and skating was good, but a little also went a long way.

  • Ren

I can’t seem to access the mobile version of the site on my iPhone, is this a problem for anyone else?

  • http://tvbythenumbers.com Bill Gorman

iPhone theme has been turned off, at least temporarily, as an experiment.

  • Ren

Thanks Bill, its easier to navigate in mobile so I hope it’s not too long.

  • http://iamnoahjames.com nkinsey

“Twelve or thirteen more good weeks of broadcast television before the summer season is upon us.”

You crack me up. That is such a despressing thing to put in a post that’s mostly positive! Way to view the glass half empty!

  • Rios

thank god it’s finally over i watch the summer olympics>winter olympics finally some good tv is gonna be on hopefully some of these new shows are good and not busts and get cancelled the 1st week

  • Rios

i’ve just been watching smallville(which is taking a few weeks break) and a bunch of my movies looking forward to new law & order

  • http://www.twitter.com/adrian_e Acey

Well Lisa if flying down a metal sled at 90 mph is boring to you I don’t know what kind of life you lead.

  • Holly

Actually flying down a sheet of ice at 90 mph on a metal sled might be exciting (or, you know, insane), but watching someone else do it on TV is another matter.

  • http://CounterMoon.org Brian Fahrlander

Ya know, I’ve been to Canada, and I live in America…but I couldn’t POSSIBLY care less who won in hockey. (I mean, really- take two teams, play’em an infinite amount of times; it’s just probability: even Tampa Bay was a winner one year!)

I’m glad to see things start to get back to normal again. There’s a lot of shows I like, and they seem to have all been stomped to watch the world’s oldest reality show. :/

  • R

There will be the Worl Cup in South AFrica this summer- Hope you will be covering it since it shall be on ABC and ESPN!

  • ian9outof10

    @Nick V

Who Do You Think You Are is a show that’s been a massive hit in the UK. It’s very good actually, and if the US sticks to the same format, I think it’s likely to be quite interesting.

What you have to remember is that, while the person you’re watching is famous, the chances are, their ancestors aren’t. The UK shows works because it’s an interesting look at history. If the US one is true to that idea, then it will be very good too.

  • AtCat

What if NBC has a ratings boost?

  • http://www.twitter.com/adrian_e Acey

NBC will have a ratings boost, just remains to be seen how much. I’m curious to see if AI can get back to 10.0+ tomorrow night.

  • the128boy

I will be very interested in NBC’s spring ratings, but could they have gone any cheaper?

Parenthood is the sole scripted offering, while the returning Celebrity Apprentice also may be quite costly for unscripted content.

But Who Do You Think You Are? A Minute To Win It? Even the Marriage Ref seems like a major cost-cutting mvoe, but at least it has big names for now.

Overall it just seems like cheap, cheap filler. Their summer schedule is roughly as classy as their midseason offerings.

Yes, I guess the Leno-hating, save-the-jobs-of-people-who-work-on-scripted people really got what they wanted, huh? Down with Leno indeed, but where are your scripted shows?

  • Holly

And where were they going to get those scripted shows at such short notice? A “non-scripted” show can go from concept to air a LOT quicker than a scripted show. The real test will be what NBC does with its schedule next season when they have time to develop scripted shows.

  • Atlee

    @ Andrew

In season 3, Chuck is anything but light hearted.

It is much, much darker. In fact, with the graphic killings on Chuck now, Chuck would be better suited to at least 9pm, & maybe 10pm.

I would agree with you if we were talking about Chuck season 1 & 2.

  • Nerwen Aldarion

Finally, I’ve been going through withdrawal without my weekly dose of new episodes

  • the128boy

Holly, that’s true, and totally my point. Leno-haters thought that they were vindicated when Leno went back to late-night, but all it really resulted in was an L&O shift from Friday to Monday and an extra repeat of SVU. I doubt there will be a slew of new scripted content next fall, either. 1 or 2 hours maybe. Hardly the 5 hours of Leno that some say “stole” from scripted dramas.

And if they really wanted to they could have aired Persons Unknown and 100 Questions. I don’t know if we will see the former and highly doubt we’ll see the latter.

However, my main point was that even for reality shows, this crop of 3 new unscripted shows seems bottom of the barrel.

  • Edward

Bah! I’m dying with anxiety over the Parenthood premiere. It’s so bad i broke out the Six feet under box set. But even that isn’t helping. I want it to do well so badly! !_! Arrrg

  • Chels725

I’m excited for Community. A half-naked Joel McHale playing pool & Danny Pudi trying to get a girl will be hilarious.

  • travustin

parenthood is starting off with a hefty promotion and positive buzz from tv critics which mean good for the new show
let say the show will start with at least 3.0 in 18-49 adult
    what do you guys think?

  • http://tvbythenumbers.com Bill Gorman

travustin, for NBC’s sake it better start off higher than a 3.0 adults 18-49 rating.

  • Holly

I think NBC would be thrilled if it averaged even close to a 3.0, but it will probably need to premiere higher than that.

  • Matt

    Cant wait to see jay!

  • forg

I think Parenthood will get a 3.2, The Biggest Loser lead in is a big help and with all the promotions :D I also wonder how will The Good Wife perform now with Parenthood in the picture

  • Jane

I can’t wait for Dancing With The Stars to come back.

  • angelpoo12

I Miss Chuck! I really Love the Show!
