Updated: Leno (With Palin) Beats Letterman Badly Again On Night Two

The second night of Jay Leno’s Tonight Show v 2.0 dominated late night again with a 4.6 household rating/12 share in early household metered markets data from 11:30p-12:30a to Letterman’s The Late Show 3.1 rating/ 8 share. ABC’s Nightline had a 3.0 rating / 7 share and Jimmy Kimmel Live trailed with a 1.7 rating / 5 share.

Adults 18-49 data:

  • “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno” (1.6 rating in adults 18-49) led the time period over CBS’s “Late Show with David Letterman” (1.0) and ABC’s “Nightline (0.9) in fast  national “live plus same day” ratings from Nielsen Media Research.  The “Tonight” margin over “Late Show” in fast-national adult 18-49 rating is 60 percent.

    Conan’s set was dismantled a while ago so no he’s not using it. He’s got some high profile guests this week but we’ll see out things turn out in the long run…

    America loves Jay Leno and Sarah Palin. They are real people who connect with real people. The Tonight Show fits Leno like a glove…and it has for 18 yrs. Conan fans, deal with it. Sarah Palin has done nothing to warrant the vicious attacks that have been launched against her since she first entered the spotlight. And last night, she was terrfic.

    How can you NOT beat Letterman? The guy isn’t even a comedian and he has the personality to replace Andy Rooney on 60 Minutes. Letterman dropped anything funny from his show a LONGGGGG time ago.

    Anybody who can actually tell a joke to open their show could beat Letterman. Which begs the question, did anybody in America under 30 even know what a CONAN was prior to this controversy? It was like looking to MSNBC in the ratings or losing an election to ‘undecided’.

    I’m with “coocoo” re: the long run. Check back on Leno’s ratings in April, after the return buzz wears off and the Olympic stars fade.

    On the latter point, I’m no fan of Palin, but I thought Shaun White was great, and Leno’s joke in the monologue (featuring a video in which White was text-messaging during his Olympic half-pipe run) was pretty darn funny.

    Go JAY!!!!!!!!!!! Msmbc and Letterman will broadcast until their last sponsor leaves and only 2 viewers are left. It’s not about entertainment to them, it’s an agenda.

    Jay Leno is a very likable, funny and entertaining person. He comes up with new spins on his show that are fun to watch. Letterman is an extremely ugly (inside and out), sarcastic, bitter, old man with very little likability. Who would you rather watch?

    sarah palin has great charisma and people like to watch her for her personality. however, this does not a president make, which is very serious business. i urge people who “love” palin to not let her personality get in the way of her knowledge and leadership. anyone who leaves their office half-way though the term is not presidential material. she is out for the money and power. now, romney has all the credentials to lead this country. though not as charismatic as palin, he definitely beats her in any contest which judges ability in running a country. let us not judge a gig on leno or letterman in making decisions on who is best to run the country.

    Sarah, It’s not about being liberal or conservative … it’s about being entertained and actually liking the person you’re watching. I don’t know about you, but I get enough hate from the socialists in the White House and on MSNBC … evil just spews from their beings. Leno is funny and entertaining and actually a very nice person.

    Leno is in and there’ll always be people who don’t like him but he is, in my opinion, far better of a showperson than Letterman. Letterman has an underlying anger issue that he tries desperately to hide during each show.

    I hated Palin and until I saw her recently I’m unfortunately gaining a small amount of respect for her. Still don’t like her but trying to understand why I don’t like her. She’s really not all that bad and seems sincere enough.

    @Jennifer H – I’ve grown to hate Team CoCo over the past few months but the truth is they have a valid claim against NBC. Jay was behind at first too and it’s at least possible Conan would have managed to rebound

    (I personally don’t think he would have because he’s too similar to Letterman’s humor but in a fair world he would have gotten the chance to try)

    But yeah, the Jay hate is just misplaced anger. I’d be willing to bet 99% of Team CoCo would have done exactly what Jay did given the chance (e.g. your boss takes away a job you love and then offers it back to you because he’s unhappy with your replacement). The only justification they have is “Jay’s rich so what does it matter”. Well guess what, loving what you do matters. If it didn’t Conan wouldn’t be negotiating with Fox right now (he’s got plenty of money now too!)

    Exactly…Letterman is there for really really slow TV nights. Palin was amazing on Leno last night. She is a very serious force and libs know it and so they feign so much outrage and contempt for her. It’s funny because the heart of the country has never seen anything from her to deserve such bitter hate/envy…other than her beauty and positive attitude which the left does hate in most all people.

    Romney was amazing on Letterman. Of course, Dave had to get in some swipes at Palin. It’s amazing that a guy who has habitually abused women (Letterman is an admitted woman abuser, FYI) is allowed to rant on this woman with ZERO fall out from main stream media. And with the ratings reflecting just how far off base the Lettermans and Olbermanns of the world are, I am surprised that they have stuck to their extreme bias agendas. But like Obama, they are willing to go down with the ship….I say “Good Riddance!”

    Sarah Palin was awesome last night. The thing she and Leno opened the show with was hilarious. Jay couldn’t find his cue cards and Sarah showed he didn’t need them as she had notes on her hand. Like Reagan, Sarah Palin knows how to make fun of herself and that is what jay Leno loves. He may lean liberal, but he is fair and not like that weasel Letterman. Sarah and Jay both likely added to their already large number of fans.

    I love how the internet affects the tone of America. People are actually engaging with people of the opposite perspective. You may not realize it, but this can dramatically change how our government works (for the better). Look at the election of Scott Brown. It was because of immediate uproar about how business was done in Washington D.C.

    Not saying all changes will be good for the Republican party…but I think they will be good for America.

    As a teacher, I’ve observed that school is more like life on the Internet than on television. People are more harsh, but they actually have to deal with people from different perspectives.

However, some of the Palin Fans are making silly claims. Palin played no role in fighting back the Socialized Medicine Bill. It was an uprising of the American Middle Class, aided by conservatives in Congress and independent voices in media, such as Glenn Beck. Palin, as usual, jumped on the bandwagon. I liked Sarah as a Governor, until she abandoned her state, but she’s still not qualified to be President (despite being more qualified tha Obama), and she has no chance of winning a GOP Primary against the Mitt Romney/Michelle Bachmann ticket. Sarah’s only option will be to run a 3rd Party and take away enough votes to give Obama a 2nd term. It’s likely she’ll do this since she’s working with Arkansas fo-republican public-relations-guru Ed Rollins, who was responsible for putting Ross Perot in to help Clinton get elected and inflating Mike Huckabee to the national stage to take votes away from Romney and aid McCain to the Primary Victory, to assure that Hillary or Obama had an “old white Senator” to run against (Americans hate electing Senators to the White House, and will choose a Governor over them 9 out of 10 times, which is why those 2 Dems needed a Senator as a challenger). If Sarah actually cared about leading Americans to a more prosperous free future, she would have finished her term as Governor, and gave up on trying to run for the White House in 2012.

    Like many other people, I believed our news media and deemed Palin an idiot. Then I read her speech in Hong Kong to world renowned people, and changed my mind. Those who were there said that she referred only 5 or 6 times to notes (not written on her hand), and the rest of the time spoke without any aids or reminders. She used no teleprompter.

    I also found that people who heard her speech said she was brilliant. Palin’s critics should check their facts about her.

    One more thing: I read her entire interview with Charlie Gibson, who was then with ABC. In it, she allegedly said that she can see Russia from her bedroom, while the transcript of that interview shows that she said that one can see Russia from an island of Alaska.

    Charlie Ginson did not challenge her on this, and I know why: Little Diomede is part of Alaska and, thus, part of the US, while Big Diomede, less than 3 miles away, is part of Russia. You can easily see one of these islands from the other. Try to take Big Diomede from Putin Russia and you will get his guns trained on you and shooting.

    As a result, it is not Palin, but her detractors who are either dumb about geography or, through malicious lies and endless propaganda, deliberatley convinced the public that the opposite is true.

    Saying this does not necessarily mean that I will vote for Palin. It only means that we should not put our trust in TV comedies and many other media productions. I urge all Americans to read the Gibson -Palin interview to check my words. Also, get a hold of Palin’s speech in Hong Kong.

    After that, if you still say that she is stupid, you need to check yourself into an insane asylum.

    To Pickles, You are correct that Leno has flashing APPLAUSE lights in his studio. They flash only during the transitions into and out of commercial. They do NOT flash during the opening of the show nor do they flash during Leno’s monologue. The ONLY TIME they flash APPLAUSE is going into and out of commercials.

    Leno’s audiences really do love them, otherwise they wouldn’t go through the gymnastics of getting the free tickets and standing in line for hours to get into the show.

These late night shows should be about entertainment outside of the regular news cycle and political gibberish of the day. Letterman on teh other hand always lets you know he is a liberal and his interviews are the kind you would expect from Larry King or Nightline. We don’t need his political leanings every single night! That is not entertaining to more than half the country! Both sides can watch Leno because he is no different with Palin than he was with Obama. That is why Letterman’s ratings suck against Leno…he offends the “opposition” whereas Leno treats them both the same and libs and the GOP can both be entertained without being offended!

    I said yesterday I do flip back-and-forth between Dave and Jay and usually end up watching more Leno because Dave’s myopic Republican-bashing which typically occurs in his monologue, top ten, special segments, lol. Now, as I’m a Mitt Romney supporter, I watched Dave last night and flipped to Jay and Palin during Late Show commercials.

    I like how they were on at the same time because it showed how insubstantial Sarah Palin contrasted to Mitt Romney. She had next to nothing to say, apart from her typical chuckin’ and jivin’ downhomestyle. Creaking on about gettin in there and messin up the liberal government system and then gettin in there and messin up the liberal mainstream media. She really is of questionable intelligence. Jay was his typical nice self.

    Meanwhile on Letterman, an interesting interview was going on, but only if you actually take interest in improvement and knowledge and accomplishment to go alongside ambition. Dave was more than fair. He wasn’t closeminded or partisan. I think he likes and/or respects Mitt Romney and recognizes his abilities. Which brings us to his disdain for Palin and Bush… Letterman is basically an intellectual elitist. While being intelligent isn’t bad and being elite isn’t bad, together it’s snobbery. Dave views Palin and Bush as idiots, and so he torches them. I’m sure he’d be respectful interviewing either one, but the nature of his jokes about them versus the ones I’ve seen him make about Romney differ greatly. With Palin it is always on how stupid or awkward she is, with Romney, Dave’s sum of jokes were in those segments during 2008 that were titled What In The World Is Mitt Romney Talking About?, which was typically showing clips of Mitt describing something wonkish or of economic nature, apart from blase rhetoric found in talking points.

    In other words, Dave hates idiots.

    That being said, Conan will take the lead when he comes back to late night on FOX. His show was fresh, new,and fun to watch. The other two shows were stale.

    People like Leno. They like Headlines. They like when Jay talks to dumb people at Universal Studios, and on Melrose. Jay does a very staid, traditional show, that draws viewers. I don’t like it. I prefer Redeye. But I give Leno credit for producing a show that lots of people like. More people like his style than Letterman’s or Conan’s. He stands to be the big winner if his show consistently out-rates Letterman. If he saves the late night daypart for NBC, he’ll have the biggest “told ya so” in TV history.

    There’s nothing “common sense” about conservative economic policies that have consistently failed to balance a single budget in the three decades they have been tried.

    Clinton raised taxes back to 1982 levels, cut some defense spending (and didn’t start two unfunded wars), and voila…a balanced budget and a projected surplus. Granted, in ONE YEAR the surplus was gone thanks to a 2 trillion dollar tax cut, and then an additional two trillion dollars borrowed because the previous WH occupant was too spineless to make the US people chip in for the wars he insisted needed to be fought.

    Remember this whole unfunded war thing the next time a conservative bleats about needing to invade Iran, Venezuela, and Argentina (Drudge is weirdly branding them an enemy as well).

    Having said all of that, I don’t remember what Leno was bringing in his first tour of the show on average, but it seems to be up a bit from Conan’s averages. But it is the first week back, and even his primetime show did great in its first week. The real telling will be when next week rolls in, if interest maintains.

    I think that Jay’s ratings are going to need to be tracked versus his own ratings from 2008-09. It doesn’t seem that he’s gained his own audience back. It all might be a moot point, because NBC really doesn’t have a whole lot of time to think about who to groom for Jay’s seat in less than a decade. Will enough time have passed for people to get over their discomfort about Jay’s rather unprofessional actions? Unless Jay drops dead on stage, will any successor really feel secure that Jay won’t change his mind again? Or will NBC chicken out and let Jay go into his mid 70′s, running the risk of losing younger demographics/loyalty to whoever CBS gets to replace Letterman?

    Personally, I’m waiting for two bellweather moments. One, in September Conan will be able to speak freely about all of this. Two, eventually a guest on Leno’s program is going to get a zinger in, and it will interesting to see how Jay reacts.

    There is no problem with conservative economic policies and they are the answer to what made Americda great and will return her to greatness. The problem is that people comfuse conservative with Republican and can’t even differentiate a real Republican from a RINO (Replublican in Name only). Far too many Rino’s have been elected to office and basically act like Democrats. McCain was one of those. His consistent message in the 2008 campaign was how much he had screwed over his one party and would continue to do so if elected.
    Sara is a rock star. That is what scares the left so much about her and why they go after her all the time. She properly wears it as a badge of honor.
    Ann Coulter said it best a few weeks back…paraphrasing here….There are a lot of bad Republicans…but no good Democrats.

    I wish Jay well and think he will do fine. He is much more a comic, host, gentleman, and American compared to that other fool Letter…something.

    Clinton raised taxes in the first 100 days and taxes went up astronomically. The way he saved himself is that he cut capital gains taxes. It did not come from supply side.

It was Bush Sr tax increase as he left office and Gingrich and the “Republicans that balanced the budget in 1996 not Clinton. Yes Clinton was President but that was the extent of his contribution. Clinton didn’t have any aspiration to balancing the budgets until Republicans took over congress in 96 and with Gingrich as Speaker forced Clinton to agree to balance the budget for which Clinton and democrats now take credit for and republicans hardly are recognized as the true architects of Clinton’s success. Actually it was Bush Sr tax increases and consumer spending and the shrinking military budget that created the balance budget during Clinton’s term the most and of course we found out later that dismantling the military made as less ready to take on the terrorists after 9-11 and thus the reason Bush W had to increase military spending to get the military ready to defend the nation and thus spend most of the surplus that he inherited.     So when the GOP took charge of congress, they limited his big spending.

So, if under no circumstances should taxes ever be raised and defense not only not cut, but exponentially increased, just how do you plan on balancing the budget? Again, this formula utterly failed under the last three Republican Presidents.

    Finally, no one will answer this, but why is it conservatives are unwilling to raise taxes in order to fund the wars they insist we fight. Do you think it was ultimately a wise move to fund a couple trilion dollar war in Iraq with a credit card?

    Hey, you guys. Back in the 90′s during the Clinton adm., when the Repubs gained control of Congress, they came up with the Contract with America. You can Google this. This was a plan to balance the budget and accomplish other goals good for America. One of the things put forward was the reform of Welfare. The Welfare system along with other so called Entitlements had just about bankrupted the country back then. Clinton actually vetoed the Welfare Reform Bill twice before Dick Morris convinced him to go ahead and allow it to pass. You can Google Dick Morris, Clinton, and Welfare Reform. As it turns out, ironically, taxes were lowered during the Clinton years. All of this resulted in the great surplus. Look it up. Of course, the dems take credit for this, but it was Newt Gingrich and the Repubs that did it.
    The Dot Com Bubble didn’t hurt either.
    Yes, I know this has little to do with Leno, but it might give you guys something real to investigate instead of just insulting each other.

    Every boom in the history of civilization has been caused by the over expansion of money and credit; mostly credit. It has inevitably been followed by a bust; generally of equal and opposite size to the boom. Presidents have less control of money and credit in our world than do central bankers. While Congress (lead by the President – such as war) can take advantage of easy credit and borrow beyond anyone’s wildest dreams, it is the central bank (Federal Reserve) that provides the mechanism to do so.

    It is difficult to watch Pols of either party continue to be oblivious to this fact and have so little real understanding of economics. The Republicans, to some degree, talk as if they understand, but in actual practice they spend like Democrats (only on different things). At some point we will have spent our way into bankruptcy. Maybe we have already. Real freedom with sound money is the only solution, but freedom requires responsibility, something I see little of today. Freedom is eroded slowly by the ever increasing size of the state in handling people’s needs. We have to be ready to do our own work and meet our own wants and not let someone else do it for us. It is difficult but, not nearly as difficult as losing our liberty will be.

    Since the top 5% pay approx. 50% of the taxes, then that’s about right. You can only give so much tax break to someone who pays little tax! Now the top 1% pay more total taxes the the bottom 95%.

    What? I think you mean ‘The government has as many rights as the Constitution allows’, not the other way around. It is very clear that the Constitution was written to create a framework for government, establish what the role of each branch was, then clearly limit its power.

    According to the Founding Fathers, rights are not given by the government but by a “Creator” and that governments should not attempt to restrict those rights. Somehow, free stuff that the government gives out is called a right. In fact, if the government gives it out, it ain’t a right. Think about it.

    Always liked Leno; he is not as abrasive as Letterman. Although Letterman is definitely a smart guy, Leno is way more the every-man.

    With respect to our rights and the government, I’ve witnessed the slow erosion of our basic rights. There are now often being defined as ‘privileges’, which can then be legislated and regulated.

    Social progress cannot exist without government. Or rather, that is what governemnt believes. For example, a restaurant sets up a non-smoking section. Suddenly towns and communities are flooded with ordinances to define such. Businesses establish parking places for the handicapped. Government jumps in and decides only it has the right to define what is handicapped, and issues stickers for said parking places. Even though parking is more often than not on private property. A company allows a more liberal time off policy to allow workers to address issues with family medical needs. The feds jump on this one and immediately pass laws for all companies to follow. Folks, this is a _really_ BAD TREND. And it needs to be stopped.

    DB- Actually the government doesn’t give us rights. Our rights are given by God and cannot be taken away. The constitution only recognizes that rights are ours by virtue of our humanity. There is no such thing as a right to education. We have the right to be left alone – the rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. If you want education it’s earned, or a privilege or an entitlement. Nothing more. It isn’t a right. People today are ignorant when they state that we have rights given us by the government. It demonstrates utter ignorance of the American constitution and philosophy of life. People don’t die to preserve the right to be educated. They die in behalf of the rights to life, to liberty (freedom from governmental intrusion) and the pursuit of happiness (the freedom to follow our dreams). This is what makes our country unique.

    You seriously need to pick up a non-high school level history book. I bet you think that the founding fathers loved slavery, too, and that the “New Deal” was a rousing success. We have less freedom today, ranging from the Patriot Act to school curricula, to attempts to bring the Internet under Federal authority. Many people live in communities where they have to get the color of their house or their decision to remove a tree or build a fence “approved.”

    Yeah, we’re more free now. Sure. You still have the right to be wrong, which you obviously are. ;)

    I think it’s high time the late night talk/entertainment show hosts like Leno and Letterman quit doing political ‘humor’ … PERIOD! They are cutting back their ratings by alienating 50% of potential viewers by ridiculing the belief systems and the personalities of each political party. Imagine the increase in the ratings if these shows emphasized making it on humor based on other things besides politics and political partisanship. Sinbad does very well without it. These hosts could, too. The truth of the matter is, NONE of them even come close to Johnny Carson’s humor, and even Conan’s last breaths were the rating grabbers during the late night wars, when he was primarily ridiculing NBC management. Craig Fergusan is head and shoulders above his ‘boss’ Letterman and his one man show is GREAT! LOL … he riducules EUROPE … especially the french, scots, and english. Americans love that.

    Sarah “Mack the Knife” Palin is awesome. With a smile on her face, not a hint of malice in her demeanor and without breaking a sweat she just gutted David Letterman. And as the song said, “without a trace of red”.

    Leno is more entertaining than Letterman and will do fine on his own, but he needed to get his audience back. Sarah did that for him. Grouchy old Dave is probably feeling a little less smug now.
