Scoreboard FOX CBS NBC ABC Uni CW
Rating: Adults 18-49 8.5/23 2.8/6 2.3/6 2.0/6 1.3/4 0.3/1
Rating: Adults 18-34 7.2/22 1.7/5 1.8/6 1.6/5 1.4/4 0.4/1
Total Viewers (million) 23.55 10.54 7.52 5.57 3.34 .77

FOX easily won the night as American Idol dominated.  It’s 8.5/23 with adults 18-49 between 8-10p outpaced the combined competition.

CBS’s Wednesday comedy block suffered with The New Adventures of Old Christine down 26% from its last new episode and Gary Unmarried was down 17%.  Criminal Minds fared much better, down only 3% from its last original outing.  CSI:NY was down 9% as Law & Order: SVU gave it much more of a run for the money than The Jay Leno Show ever did, and NBC rose from the cellar to take third place for the night.

ABC had a bad night with The Middle down 28% from its last original outing, and Modern Family down 15%. Cougar Town was down 11%.  With a 1.3 adults 18-49 rating, the Oprah Winfrey Oscar Special was 19% lower than Ugly Betty’s last original episode in the time slot.   The daytime Queen held no sway in primetime last night.

I’d expect things will improve for The Middle and CBS’s 8pm comedy block next week as Human Target takes the 8-9pm hour back from American Idol.

Definitions:

Fast Affiliate Ratings: These first national ratings, including demographics, are available at approximately 11 AM (ET) the day after telecast, and are released to subscribing customers daily. These data, from the National People Meter sample, are strictly time-period information, based on the normal broadcast network feed, and include all programming on the affiliated stations, sometimes including network programming, sometimes not. The figures may include stations that did not air the entire network feed, as well as local news breaks or cutaways for local coverage or other programming. Fast Affiliate ratings are not as useful for live programs and are likely to differ significantly from the final results, because the data reflect normal broadcast feed patterns. For example, with a World Series game, Fast Affiliate Ratings would include whatever aired from 8-11PM on affiliates in the Pacific Time Zone, following the live football game, but not game coverage that begins at 5PM PT. The same would be true of Presidential debates as well as live award shows and breaking news reports.

Rating: Estimated percentage of the universe of TV households (or other specified group) tuned to a program in the average minute. Ratings are expressed as a percent.

Share (of Audience): The percent of households (or persons) using television who are tuned to a specific program, station or network in a specific area at a specific time. (See also, Rating, which represents tuning or viewing as a percent of the entire population being measured.)

Time Shifted Viewing – Program ratings for national sources are produced in three streams of data – Live, Live+Same Day (Live+SD) and Live+7 Day. Time shifted figures account for incremental viewing that takes place with DVRs which are currently in approximately 24.4% of all U.S. TV households. Live+Same Day (Live+SD) include viewing during the same broadcast day as the original telecast, with a cut-off of 3:00AM local time when meters transmit daily viewing to Nielsen for processing. Live+7 Day ratings include incremental viewing that takes place during the 7 days following a telecast.

    great night for A.I

  • Greg Chenoweth

NBC’s ratings for the 10 p.m. hour have improved all week with no Jay Leno Show airing. Oh, wait a minute. It wasn’t about the ratings was it? It was because it was more profitable, just like the Olympics.

  • John

The Middle will bounce back, that wasn’t the strongest of episodes last night, felt kind of forced and not up to the usual writing.

  • http://tvbythenumbers.com Bill Gorman

Silly Greg Chenoweth, the Olympics were never about profit, they were about corporate ego building (or reputation, take your pick).

  • ken

Hmmm, SVU gave CSI NY a run for it’s money, is this a one shot deal because of it’s Olympic promotion or is this a contest to be watched for the rest of the season.

  • http://remotecontrolsyou.com Julia

I guess taking time off for the Olympics didn’t help anyone. CBS and ABC were holding up pretty decently against Idol prior to their breaks.

  • DenverDean

So 12.78M for MF, but surrounded by two 5-6M shows? The one of the most bizarre increases and then drop-offs I’ve seen in some time. Nice to see Ocra in last.

  • rob

Im guessing Modern Family total viewers are wrong. Looks a little high. Its still strong. Cougar Town still losing its lead-in. The Middle is still doing ok! Thank God Idol is only an hour next week so everything should bounce back to normal.

Why the hell did ABC promote that Oprah garbage special soo much if it gets worse numbers than Ugly Betty? Considering The Middle barely got any promotion, it did well.

WOW L&O was neck and nech with CSI:NY.

  • Tony

Not surprising considering the performance nights are more watched than the result shows of American which are normally up again ABC’s comedy block.

and I might be mistaken but didn’t Modern Family’s total viewers actually go up about 2 million compared to the last new episode?

  • The Daw

Why was comedy down so much overall?

  • Zoddguts

    Yikes at Cougar Town.

  • FCP

“Modern Family”‘s numbers are interesting. I usually don’t pay too much attention to total viewers, but isn’t 12.78 million higher than usual for them? I could have sworn they were pulling in about ten million or so.

Of course, the demo dropped, so does this mean that older viewers were specifically looking for something to watch that wasn’t “American Idol”?

  • http://tvbythenumbers.com Bill Gorman

Its hard to know how both L&O:SVU and L&O will do the rest of the season at 10pm. I think the double episodes (which were a good strategy IMO) elevated the 10pm ratings, but that will not continue.

  • http://tvbythenumbers.com Robert Seidman

Comedy from 8p-9p down so much overall because of Idol instead of “Human Target”. Next week back to Human Target, so The Middle and CBS’ 8pm block should see improvements.

  • http://tvbythenumbers.com Bill Gorman

rob, DenverDean, Modern Family viewers are wrong. I’m sure Robert will correct.

  • http://tvbythenumbers.com Robert Seidman

Comedy from 8p-9p was down so much overall because of Idol instead of “Human Target”. Next week back to Human Target, so The Middle and CBS’ 8pm block should see improvements.

  • mswood

I have a stupid question, does Gossip Girls Wednesday reruns count as part of its official season, or are those days considered outside its normal time slot?

  • http://tvbythenumbers.com Bill Gorman

mswood, the GG repeats on Wednesday are not counted in Nielsen’s (or my) season averages because they are “specials”.

  • GEORGE 11

Why all shows fell last night??

  • Ethan

What’s with Modern Family and Cougar Town? Are those numbers correct?

  • victor hugo

This is a normal level for The Middle against American Idol.. January 13th the series saw same numbers for last night

And Big Ouch for Cougar Town.

  • http://tvbythenumbers.com Robert Seidman

Modern Family viewers corrected: I accidentally gave it the 8p-8:30p viewers for Criminal Minds. It was 8.083 million viewers though, not 12.78 million.

  • http://twitter.com/adrian_e Acey

The vocal coaches and producers over at American Idol have clearly done a lot of work with these contestants, and boy did they ever need it. Both the guys and girls showed marked improvement this week after getting over the opening week nerves. It’s still a relatively weak crop overall, but at least now one can see there’s a little bit of talent there and it is worth watching till the end. The ratings should be okay the rest of the way.

Criminal Minds = fantastic. This show is just freakin’ superb. Matthew Grey Gubler put in a fantastic directing effort here. I think SVU actually took a few tenths from CBS in that hour and not Idol but Gubler and company were still able to edge out Modern Family. It looks like people are switching over from Idol to SVU at 10 and not NY, which has notably poor retention out of CM unlike The Mentalist which has been building out of CSI. This leads me to believe Wednesday could be the big shake-up night for CBS come fall.

Life Unexpected was pre-empted in Chicago due to basketball on Monday so I didn’t catch it till last night. I still like the direction it is headed and would love to see it get renewed. It’s still a little bit predictable, but not boring like *cough* Parenthood *cough*.

Mercy… what a mess this show is because the writing is all over the place. The cast does the best with what they have but I think I’ll be giving up now. I hope to see the lead in some other show down the line, hopefully on a less uesless network.

  • Tom

Thats funny because to me total viewers is the most important number and is the only one I pay attention to.

Speaking of that, modern family seems really high, is that a mistake? if not, that is a great number for them(I never watch it, dont even know what its about).

Seems alot of people changed channels from abc at 9:30pm. Cougar Town had a huge dropoff.

Its a shame that SVU has really suffered in the ratings, it is such a great show, hard to believe it came in 4th place in its time slor from 9-10pm

  • sam

    hard drop for christine

  • the128boy

Bill, I agree, L&O and SVU had their best chances at good 10pm numbers this week. Considering that, 2.1 and 3.0 is disappointing. SVU couldn’t even claim highest scripted drama, even Parenthood was a tick ahead.

  • rob

Oh so did anyone hear that ABC is thinking about changing the title of Cougar Town for next season because thats why they think Cougar Town is losing a lot of Modern Family lead-in. Theyre full of crap. People who watch Modern Family actually have taste!!

  • Dario

Great news for NBC and Law & Order : SVU! Next week it could beat CSI!

  • Jenny

I don’t see Cougar Town going beyond a second season.

  • Tom

okay, so Modern Family total viewers was a typo. 8 million viewers makes more sense and the drop off for Cougar wasnt so steep!

  • Susan

I’m very pleased with SVU’s numbers in the second hour (take that, Jay!).
And on a personal level, the second episode of SVU was particularly satisfying for me, since, as a longtime Oz and B/K fan, Meloni and Tergesen’s reunion and reenactment of the B/K intimacy was definitely one of the highlights of the season (I’m sure though that SVU fans who never watched Oz didn’t get that interrogation scene, which seemed a bit out of character for Stabler).

  • http://tvbythenumbers.com Robert Seidman

^Tom, see the comments above your own. It doesn’t matter if you (or anyone else) care only about viewers, that is of course, your right. But it’s not what’s important to advertising revenue or renewal prospects.

  • Jane

Idol is more watchable this week than last. Even Ellen is becoming more tolerable as a judge.

  • Jenny

Those are some pretty good numbers for Life Unexpected for it going up against American Idol.

  • ODog

I watched Modern Family for the first time last night because my girlfriend loves it. Good stuff! I love me some Al Bundy.

I couldn’t get through 2 minutes of Cougar Town before I made my gf change the channel.

  • http://tvbythenumbers.com Bill Gorman

Tom, care about whatever you want, just don’t be surprised when shows with low ratings and high viewership get canceled!

    Without a Trace!
    Eleventh Hour!
    The Unit!

  • Edward

what happened is idol didn’t take a break against the Olympics like nearly all of the scripted shows. So it has a lot of momentum and people (if you can call them that) are hooked whereas ABC’s comedy block will have some work to do in the next few weeks getting back their viewers.

  • Dario

23.85 mil. for 8 and 9PM, so how can FOX’s average be 23.55?

  • http://iamnoahjames.com nkinsey

Randy was being a total jerk the whole night. It’s amazing how obvious the judges/producers favor certain performers. What is even MORE amazing is how Randy just contradicts himself multiple times each night:

    http://iamnoahjames.com/2010/03/04/idolspec-top-10-ladies-performance-show-%e2%80%93-332010/

  • RViewer

    @ Acey

Yes, CM last night was great. Matthew Gray Gubler is a good director. I hope he will direct more episodes next season.

As for CSI:NY I think this show is in trouble. I can see it being moved to Sunday at 10h00pm and CBS put CM2 at 10h00pm on wed.

  • http://tvbythenumbers.com Robert Seidman

Idol 8pm = Typo. Should be: 23.24M. will fix

  • Tom

Definitely an ugly night for comedies.

ABC’s dug their own hole by renewing CT early, when it pretty much has to air on some weeknight at 9:30 only.

MF is rather bizarre, dropping in the demo from their usual numbers vs. new competition while simultaneously gaining 2 million viewers.

Will be interesting to see which show wins the 10pm showdown between Parenthood and SVU – though SVU repeats as a leadin will do new SVUs no favors.

And my word, how much more does CBS need to sink at 8pm before they pull the plug on the comedy block? Especially when keeping it means dropping Good Wife to Fridays AND timesharing Undercover Boss while it’s still hot, most likely. Yeesh.

  • The_GodfatherSJP

Shows what a 2-3 week break in episodes can do to a show when it returns, I think. You’ll probably see down numbers for CBS and ABC tonight as well, even without IDOL, because of the string of repeats. CW is in the same boat.

Yeah, these shows will rebound, how much is the question. Not a lot, really, if you ask me. Probably back to normal levels. I’m more interested in Human Target. Got a 2.1 during the Olympics. 2.4 before that. And it’s been on break. Up against new episodes, I’d say it pulls a 2.1/2.2 again.

  • rob

ABC is thinking about changing Cougar Towns title thinking thats why it loses a lot of Modern Family lead-in. I doubt changing the title will do anything. Its still the same show thats not even that funny.

  • Tom

Bah, what I get for taking a coffee break before putting up my comment. MF numbers make perfect sense. Yes, OC’s weakness vs. AI is not a surprise – but CBS dramas can hold their own vs. AI.

  • rob

Greys should bounce back from its series lows 2 weeks ago. Hoping it gets at least a 4.5 tonight and Private Practice gets a 3.5.

  • mswood

    Bill

Thanks for the response about GG it is how I was tracking it, but I didn’t know for sure.

  • http://twitter.com/adrian_e Acey

“And my word, how much more does CBS need to sink at 8pm before they pull the plug on the comedy block? Especially when keeping it means dropping Good Wife to Fridays AND timesharing Undercover Boss while it’s still hot, most likely. Yeesh.”

I agree that the hour underperforms compared to the rest of the sked, but these numbers are somewhat anomalous given Idol. Human Target is the regular competition.

Edward – Don’t know about that, I would say Idol has a low elasticity of viewership. Its numbers wouldn’t have been much different had it taken the Olympics off. As it is, I think they’re still down a few tenths vs last year.

Ahh that 9 pm ABC viewership number makes a lot more sense. Regardless, Criminal Minds vs Modern Family has been the best battle within a timeslot all year long. These shows are slugging it out, even vs Idol. I agree RViewer that NY needs to move, but not sure if CM2 needs to go there. Can one even sit on the edge of their seat for back-to-back attacks of Minds?

  • Tommy

I completely expected ABC to take a hit when AI got down to the top 24. I actually think that the comedies held up somewhat well against the Live AI. If ABC isn’t happy with these numbers they need to do a marketing push, but something tells me that these numbers are exceptable to them.

  • Tom

I agree with Godfather – unless it is a special, it will take the shows a couple weeks to get up to their usual averages. Vs. the Office “special”, I rather doubt GA will get near its usual average. (CSI will take a hit as well.)

Then again, this has nothing to do with Wednesday ratings!

  • rory

poor Mercy.. the 8-9 hour will breath next week with human target..

  • Cody

I love CT, but they need to do something fast.

  • Cody

I love Cougar Town, but they need to revamp the show because I can see why people aren’t tuning in anymore.

  • Stefan

Oh, damn! I had no idea Idol was at 8 last night! Christine took quite a hit, but will rebound next week when Idol goes back to 9.

I bet ABC’s kicking themselves for renewing CT so early. And honestly, do they think viewers are so stupid that they’d watch anything? Without a doubt, the worst scripted show on TV right now.

  • Katie

Cody what’s happening with Cougartown. I can’t stand the show(and I adore Courtney Cox) but what’s changed?

And Criminal Minds was actually pretty decent last night. And kudos to L&O SVU for bouncing back.

Oprah tanks. Good. Can’t stand her.

And mercy is just a mess. There’s not one likable character on that show.

  • Tommy

I wouldn’t call CT the worst scripted show on TV right now. That honor would go to Melrose Place IMO. I personally like CT, but I can see where it isn’t a fit for everyone.

  • http://twitter.com/adrian_e Acey

rory – that’s not even the season low for Mercy, they had a 1.5 on 1/13 and this same 1.6 on 2/3.

Stefan – I don’t think ABC’s execs are kicking themselves yet. They’re definitely smarter than all of us… it’s not like they didn’t know Idol would be on. The numbers I have here show CT dropping to a 1.9 on 11/25 and that was a new episode?! I wonder if that’s a mistake. 2.4′s good compared to that.

  • http://my-sick.blogspot.com Anthony

Oprah loses all of her appeal as soon as she leaves the comfort of the afternoon. There is no in-home competition for the TV remote when her daytime show is on. At night, it’s a different story.

  • Tyler

    @Acey

That was the Wednesday before Thanksgiving – everything tanked. Not a good comparison at all.

  • Mumbo

So, SVU is clearly a 10:00 show and should not be moved out of there again.

What a horrific number for Old Christine. The Middle took a couple steps back too.

Cougar Town lives by the Modern Family lead-in. It’s like ABC’s version of 30 Rock, only without the quality.

  • Chuck Tranberg

What an improvement for NBC at 10 PM! L&O SUV almost matches CSI in the demo and in getting 9 million viewers easily outpaced ABC and Ophrah’s Oscar special.

  • Tommy

I think ABC is dead in the water for the rest of the season on Wednesdays at 10. I don’t think Happytown is going to change that when it premieres in April.

  • Katie

Does this hopefully mean Oprah won’t be taking over Barbara Walters pre-Oscar special next year since this is Barbara’s last year. That is unless she pulls a Leno and changes her mind.

  • Calvin

Lots of shows are taking the hit if they’re up against American Idol. Even the Olympics has been beaten once or twice (in total viewers). Because Cougar Town is already renewed for fall 2010, fans of the show don’t even have to look at the ratings until next fall. However those who want Cougar Town to have a third season better worry. As soon as ABC finds a stronger new comedy, ABC may end Cougar Town after two seasons.

Does anybody know how much ABC pays Oprah Winfrey to produce that Oscar Special? The Jay Leno Show costs NBC about $400,000 per episode and had comparable ratings to Oprah’s show. If ABC paid Oprah $400,000, ABC made a good deal.

  • Tom

Yeah, that 1.9 for CT was the day before Thanksgiving, when numbers were down across the board, and should be discarded.

The more relevant number was CT doing a 2.7 on 2/10. Add in viewers being slow to return to their routine, and the 2.4 seems reasonable. The real issue is that a 2.7 after MF is underperforming, and there are few slots the show can fit into next year.

  • Tommy

I think CT could be improved if it got a new show runner. Bill Lawrence was great back in Scrubs hay day, but I think he’s a one trick pony. The cast is pretty solid with good comedic timing.

  • R

    How about late night ratings???

  • Jim

Any news on Leno-Letterman from last night?

  • Jim

    R – GMTA

  • Craig

Good lord its one bad week and people are talking about ABC been dead in the water? be real

And MP the worst scripted show on TV, are you kidding?

I could think of 10 that would go before that, 2 of them on last night

  • Ben

MF/CT are a great combo. I, personally, look forward to CT more, despite Courtney Cox’s over-the-top (and often irritating) performance. The surrounding cast is top-notch and work seamlessly together. The same goes for MF’s cast. I don’t think CT is better written, I just think it tends to be more enjoyable (for me). Though, I have to say, both shows were on top of their game last night. I laughed a lot. CT needs a different lead-in. I don’t think MF/CT share very much anymore. Maybe pair CT with DWTS in the fall? As for Cox, they just need to tone her down. All in all, I like the show as it stands. I enjoy it whenever it’s on.

  • Tommy

@ Craig, The dead in the water comment for referring to ABC Wednesdays at 10PM. Nothing has worked in the timeslot, Eastwick = Canceled, Ugly Betty = Canceled, Specials = Bad Ratings, Happytown = Not much hope. I in no way said the entire night was dead in the water, only the 10PM hour.

And if you think MP is good, that’s all on you, I was simply stating my opinion.

  • Sara

Mercy is a terrible show but Dr. van der Beek has been a delightful addition and has been the highlight of the last several episodes. If NBC develops a show around his evil snarky character it could have a hit.

Well, probably not. But The Beek should be signed to a development deal to play this kind of hilarious a-hole character.

  • Patrick J. Murphy

Truthfully, I didn’t think either Modern Family or Cougar Town had their best shows last night. Granted, Modern Family’s worst is still better than the best that most comedies can do these days, but MF was mildly amusing last night. I think Cougar Town lacks direction right now. The cast works great together, but something felt splintered last night. I thought Beverly D’Angelo being on the show would have been great, but it was definitely a missed opportunity.

CT should probably be paired with another show, and put Modern Family and The Middle together. Not sure what show, though.

  • Katie

Modern Family and The Middle work best together. I don’t see the logic in pairing Modern Family with Cougartown. They really aren’t similar comedies.

  • Katie

I don’t know why some thing viewers don’t watch because an episode was not up to par. How would someone who normally watches the show know beforehand that the new episode that’s airing it not as good as normal? Seems farfetched.

  • Scott Jones

Im not sure what the big fuss is about Modern Family taking a “Dive”, a 3.5 is not all that bad even though it took a 15% dive. Cougar Town however needs to turn things up next week becuase it cant go any lower than it is now.

  • Scott Jones

CSI:NY im not sure why its ratings are not way higher. I mean look at its competition, Law & Order isnt that big of a threat and dont get me started with the Oprah special. All im saying is that the ratings need to improve beacuse this is a steller show with NO competition.

  • Alex

What a difference a day makes, yesterday everyone’s talking about NBC ‘only’ getting a 3.1 at 10PM and now we’re praising SVU’s 3.0. I know given the huge promotional push for Parenthood this isn’t an apples to apples comparison but like I said yesterday at this stage in the game, a 3+ for NBC scripted is a big win.

On the subject of SVU is it a ’10PM show’ because of the content or because there’s less competition? Personally I’m saying less competition but that’s just me.

Elsewhere ABC has problems but Modern Family isn’t it. Yes it took a hit this week but its still the biggest thing on ABC for the night and the third best performer of the night across all the networks. Cougar Town and The Middle on the other hand are problems. I’m interested to see what ABC does with Cougar Town next season and whether they move it out of Modern Family lead-in or not.

  • Scott Jones

CANNOT wait for Merraige Ref tonight on NBC, Community, Parks and Rec, and CSI: Crime Scene Investigation.

  • Mar

@Scott Jones I think we need to consider that SVU and CSINY might have more of an overlapping portion of viewers, than SVU and Criminal Minds.

  • bob

i cant see christine being renewed over gary. They both have been consistant, but mediocre as well. However, if CBS is really committed to this comedy block, I would think they have to take one of them. Christines 18-49 numbers have been noticably lower than garys, im going out on a limb and saying gay renewed, christine cancelled, come on a 1.7? no way, both these shows need to stay above 2 for a shot. Gar has done that, Christine’s 1.7 doesnt help it.

  • Katie

Bob didn’t ABC say they’d pixk up Christine if CBS cancelled?

  • bob

ok, so abc has decent 10pm shows on sunday, monday, thursday, and ill say friday too, cuz 20/20 performs fine for a friday night. So that leaves Tuesday and Wednesday.

Obviously scripted shows havent worked, so try some cheap to produce reality show. Quality in programming might go down, but if it brings in decent ratings with a cheap budget, it could work nicely for abc.

  • romo

    That kid is fat.

  • jake

I loved the oprah winfrey oscar show — it was so much better than Barbara’s. All of you should catch it on abc.com

glenn close and michael douglas talk about fatal attraction.

  • bob

katie, i didnt hear that? but with the new abc comedy block performing pretty well, i dont know if they would have room, unless they paired it on tuesdays with another comedy. But i dont think it will happen, if im abc, im concentrating on my new successful wedsnday block, not working on a new one, but hey i could be wrong.

  • Scott Jones

@MAR, im not sure what you mean?

  • Johnny

ABC is off pretty bad. Hank tanking so fast and The Middle dropping off gives them a very slow start to the night.

  • Katie

Bob they could use another show in the comedy block or maybe they are counting on Romantically Unchalleged. I also think renewing Cougartown so early and expressng interest in Christine has more to do with Courtney Cox and Julia Louis Dreyfuss than anything else.

  • Katie

What happened to Hank? I never watched but wasn’t that Kelsey Grammars new show

  • http://tvbythenumbers.com Bill Gorman

Katie, Hank was pulled from the schedule in the Fall. Precisely because *you* didn’t watch! ;)

  • bluetahoe

Modern Family is funny and Cougar Town is not. Case closed.

Katie, dirt was shoveled on the Hank corpse months ago. You saved a half hour of your life by not watching this bomb.

  • http://tvbythenumbers.com Robert Seidman

Scott Jones, though I think people’s viewing definitely still need to “get back to normal” post-Olympics, I saw the 15% decline for Modern Family as a bigger deal than The Middle’s drop. The Middle didn’t face Idol the last time it aired, but Modern Family did.

  • Alex

Out of interest do the two-hour Idol’s usually do more damage than the one hour blocks? I mean that in terms of does the fact its two-hours usually produce a bigger hit to the 9PM shows that would usually square off with it? I’m just thinking in terms of it weakening the 8PM show lead-ins…

  • Mar

    @ Scott Jones
I meant that they steal viewers from one another more so ’cause they are more of the “same type of show”. Criminal Minds although it’s a procedural… it has the creepy factor that makes it appeal to a different set of audience. Also SVU is the strongest of the L&Os.

  • Tommy

@ Katie, ABC has been public for the last few years that they would be interested in picking up Christine should CBS cancel it. But that was before ABC had any Comedy hits, and now with 3 Comedies doing well this year, and the lack of interest in Scrubs, I think ABC’s interest in picking up Christine is much lower than it once was. If ABC was interested in Julia, then they would probably be better off casting her in a comedy pilot once Christine is canceled. Yes it may take longer to get her, but in the end I would give a new series better odds of surviving then I would a castoff series that’s already in its 5th season.

  • K.H.

One thing I will never understand about most people is how “their” opinion is the definite opinion of all? “This show sucks”, “This so is great”, etc. Its all subjective.

Anyway, does anyone know if Modern Life, Cougar Town, and the Middle are produced by ABC or are they produced in another studio?

  • rob

K.H., Cougar Town is the only ABC comedy produced by ABC studios. The Middle is produced by Warner Brothers and Modern Family produced by FOX.

  • Bill

CM gets creepier with every episode. And i like it!

  • Giuseppe

Great news for SVU! And I think the difference between comparing the performance of SVU and Parenthood is that Parenthood had a strong lead-in, whereas SVU did not.

This is the second night in a row that NBC came in 3rd! Small steps, but nevertheless, improvements.

  • Stefan

    @bob,
I believe this is the second time this season Gary has beaten Christine’s demo. Still, overall, Christine is a stronger performer and thus has better chances for a renewal. Still, I hope either Gary tanks next week or AoP on March 31 to boost Christine’s chances.
ABC may still want Julia (who could blame them?) but I don’t think they want Christine anymore.

  • Dave

Those are really scary number for Old Christine! But they’re not too surprising since it aired against American Idol versus the regular in the slot, Human Target. I’m excited to see how Old Christine and Accidentally On Purpose do with each other in two weeks.

  • jake

23 million people for american idol…. wtf is going on in this world…

  • Tony

Actually, with the way things are going for Cougar Town, I wouldn’t be too shocked if ABC picked up Christine for mid season. But I wouldn’t be shocked if they didn’t pick it up at all.

  • Stefan

@ Dave, AoP debuts on April 7 according to Wikipedia, so it’s 5 weeks from now. I don’t have any other source unfortunately.

It’ll be interesting to see if Christine could beat Human Target next week (if I recall correctly, Christine was only 0.2 behind HT last time.)

  • Tina

Damn I have a feeling this will be the end of Cougar Town I know it was renewed but it’s doing kinda bad :(

  • Tony

@Stefan- no AoP starts March 31st.

  • sara

I really enjoy The Middle and Modern Family, I hope they get more viewers. I always change the channel after Modern Family. I tried watching Cougar Town a couple of different times, and it just seems like a really dumb show with bad acting and writing.

  • Ali

Wow!Except for AI and CM,all those numbers are either ok or pretty bad.I guess people don’t like what’s on Tv on wednesdays.Sad to see CT so low I love that show even though last nights episode was pretty boring. Also didn’t care for MF episode either.

Cougar Town is NOT funny – not surprised by the huge dropoff.

  • Summer

Television really stink except for CM. Some of the older shows that you can see on A&E are much better. Shark with James Woods is better that the junk they have on now.

I think a lot of “folks” that voted for Obama has buyer’s remorse.

    American Idol is CRAP ¡¡¡¡¡¡¡
    I love series ¡¡¡¡

  • NCMike

It’s becoming more and more obvious that the American people have lost their interest in the politicized drivel coming out of Hollywood, and the insipid comments of the celebrities who have access to the public airwaves. The fact that an airhead can sound “convincing” reading the words of someone else, loses all credibility when they voice the vapid meanderings of their own heads. Having one’s face on thousands of movie screens gives no credence to the notion that there’s anything inside that two dimensional head. Americans are fed up with Hollywood, Washington DC, the media, and academic windsbags. At some point, the lies become tiresome, irrelevant, and obvious.

  • Elaine

We LOVE “The Middle” and hope people will give it a try. The characters are great and I am growing to love them ALL. This show has such a heart. I hope more people will give it a chance.

We also really like “Modern Family” a lot (who would have thought!). The characters seemed to weird and strange at first, but they also have good hearts, and they make us smile.

  • forg

I expected the comedies to go down this week because it’s the top 20 already unlike the last original airing which was an overextended reveal of the top 24. But still a 3.5 against Idol is still good for Modern Family but I hope it goes higher next week. 2.4 for Cougar Town is not a good sign on it will hold up once Idol reaches the top 12 (I expect Idol will peak in the last 30 minutes to find out who got the boot)

The Middle took a dive but everything at 8-9pm that is not American Idol had terrible ratings anyway.

Wow at SVU, back to it’s old ratings power, 10pm is indeed the right place for this show.

As much as I like Old Christine, I don’t think ABC will pick it up this time. Before they expressed interest because they have no hit sitcoms and they could use Old Christine to be build a comedy block but with Modern Family successful and Cougar Town & The Middle doing relatively good (compared to their past sitcoms) they don’t need Old Christine anymore and let’s face it the ratings for the show ain’t good anymore. And it’s not an ABC studios production so there’s no incentive if they pick it up.

Life Unexpected still over 1 million viewers :D

  • alio

I wouldn’t watch Christine because I don’t like her politics nor do
I like the black gal on her show who is altogether mean spirited and not one bit funny. I quit watching trash like this show & Ugly Betty.
I quit watching that after a hateful announcement at an award show last year. Yup! I don’t watch trashy programs and mean spirited scripts.

  • alio

I think it’s CBS (Katy Couric)….. when they planned to hire her, I emailed and told them I would boycott their show and I wouldn’t watch
that Katy couric under any conditions and that she would fail….. She
is at the bottom of the pack, I’d say that was a good prediction. HUH?
So, I was able to email last year and tell them, “I told you so” hahaha

  • GT

It’s all a bunch of crap. Entertainment for morons.

  • libertasdon

I do not watch any of these shows. I do not wish to watch any of them. Any of them. I would feel some sense of satisfaction, not a litlle, if I were to read on the net someday that each of them, together with the exact ground on which their network headquarters stood, were somehow inexplicably missing from the face of the earth. Leaving the HuffPo creatures to wonder how George Bush had managed to do that.

  • Oh, Hi Mark

It wasn’t that long ago that Oprah was powerful enough to create deities. She created the term “The One”…

Now she can’t get anyone to watch her interview celebrities?

What a swift and sudden fall from grace.

  • Rocco Siffredi

Glad to see Modern Family start tanking. They’re only so many homosexuals who can watch that stuff every week. Make a show about a white, straight, Christian couple and it’ll be #1.

  • Tommy

Since when is a 3.5 tanking? And I’m pretty sure that there is more than homosexuals watching the show, just because you’re homophobic doesn’t mean the rest of the country is.

  • ltzg1234

Unfortunately Chuck has just not been very good this season-really negative when it comes to the featured Chuck/Sarah relationship. Episode 8 Showed Sarah more enamored with Shaw (Brandon Routh) than she ever has been with Chuck. She has known Chuck for over two years so she should know for sure that he is/or is not the one for her. Chuck should also know that she is unstable and with her wandering eye should leave her alone. Right now the show is begging to be cancelled. It is a shame if F&S had not screwed up the Sarah/Chuck relationship they could have gotten 3 or 4 more seasons–F&S do seem to suffer from limited creativity. Given the present state of the Sarah/Chuck situation I do not know how Chuck could ever love /trust Sarah again I hope the return of Chuck’s Dad along with the exit of Brandon Routh can bail the series out, I want to see Chuck and Sarah as a permanent couple going after evildoers and creating good comedy.

  • JJ

“The Middle” and “Modern Family” are two shows we enjoy. Good, good fun.

That these shows were the lead-ins for cr*p like “Cougar Town” and that silly woman’s special shows that maybe, juuuuust maybe ABC knows where their strengths lie.

Nah, I don’t believe that, either.

  • Tommy

JJ I think Drudge Report or something like that must have linked to this article, that’s the only reason I can come up with for all the right-winged stupidity being spewed all over the comments for the overnight ratings.

  • Lala

Rocco, you are such a troll. If what you said is true, why is The Middle doing worse than Modern Family. I’m not gay but I love both Modern Family. Idiots like you is the reason why our country is going down the shithole: stupid, racist, homophobic, completely close-minded and totally brainwashed by FoxNews.

  • Dan

Who cares about the self congratulatory Hollywood events and who especially cares about Oprah?
We stoped watching the so boring Oscars years ago and we are not the only ones, just look at the ratings.
Is that not the point of this story? THe ratings show almost no one watched. Drudge or anyone else did not do that comments aside.

  • forg

Tommy, most likely because there is Oprah on this article LOL

  • Stefan

It’s people like you, Rocco, uneducated, racist, homophobic hillbillies, that are dragging this country down.

@Alio: I don’t know what show you were watching, but Old Christine has absolutely nothing to do with politics.

  • bruce

Oprah has been dead to me since she sucked up to Obama. It would appear millions of others feel the same way. She should have stayed out of showing favoritism. Big mistake.

American Idol doesn’t seem to be drawing the big numbers like in previous years. Didn’t it used to get 28 to 30 million viewers? Now it’s down to 22 to 23 million and sinking.

Tommy, is it that because you are a radical left-wingnut with little common sense that you can’t take the criticism of anyone who does not share your pathetic viewpoint. I find it interesting how ultra-liberals are some of the most repulsive individuals in the united states. Unlike the far right who formerly were far less outspoken than the liberal left, during the last ten years they have become increasingly outspoken as the left has always been. The far right now have got the leading platforms in the media to counter the regressive left. As an independent who is tired of the whining left and their inept abilities it has been a pleasure watching the far right pummel your kind in all walks of life lately. Perhaps when you whining liberals shut up there will be more tolerance of your diverse ways. You show your hipocrisy when you are critical of other individuals perspectives because they don’t share yours. You are worse than the most homophobic person in your expectation that everyone must share your perspective. Without question you can always count on a radical liberal to attack any individual with an opposing viewpoint with demeaning slander. I have seen the tides of change and will welcome the change again away from the radical left and the outspoken minority who feel they are entitled and privledged. Poor tommy your days in the sunshine are soon to be cloudy.

  • http://none POORSARAH

    Sarah,

You are delusional. Your as liberal as the snow is white. By stating that people who read the Drudge Report are right wing fanatics shows your low IQ. You are a repeater, parroter of propaganda. The far left know no other way to challenge opposing viewpoints than slander of all oppositional perspectives.

For your education, Drudge Report is read by all walks of life. Nearly all reporters, radical left or demented fat right, check its page throughout the day. Matt Drudge’s success is that he links to significant breaking news all over the world. He has more balanced coverage than the far left loonie tv network stations and the not-so-balanced right leaning Fox News. He links to both sides of an issue more than any other media platform.

Wake up and get educated. Take the time to read a little more and watch TV a little less. TV presents to you a perspective which can brainwash your ability to think for yourself. Try reading news from both sides of the coin and come to your own conclusions. Perhaps you will quickly see how lame TV has become.

It seems folks are increasingly losing their capacity to think for themselves. It is unbelievable that people will sit and watch a newscaster tell them what someone has just presented to them in a speech. It is an amazing sickness of network TV. Unfortunately the theme is carried through in entertainment programming too. Time for folks to let sponsors know that the public prefers entertainment TV void of political content. Leave that for the network news nitwits.

Sarh, enjoy your TV shows of your choice but get a grip on the brainwashing taking place. You will be a more enlightened person in the long run when you can realize the propaganda machines in play.

  • NCMike

A sleeping giant has awakened. No longer will the uncontested comments of the moral relativists hold sway in the major communications media. Whether in newspapers, televison, cinema, or acadmia, the strangle hold of the left has been broken. What is whined about as “hateful” speech, is nothing more than an opinion that diverges from the monotone droning of the left. After 40 years of incessant anti-Americanism, anti-capitalism, anti-individualism, anti-religion, and anti intellectualism, blared across the entire communications spectrum, the decadence, nihilism, and bankruptcy of that agenda-driven cacaphony is being contested. Long silent, otherwise moderate Americans are saying “enough”! We’re sick of your biased movies, books, politics, and socio-economic intrusions into our lives. We sick of your decadence. Even things as irrelevant as the pack-patting, self-congratulating awards shows draw an exasperated ire.

The rising of middle America and traditional conservatism has been facilitated by open communications and access to the internet by much of America – or at least what is left of America. Clearly the liberals are going into hysterics – as evident from this thread.

Don’t worry Big Sis Napolean and Nobabma want to increase monitoring of the internet – just in case middle America want’s to mobilize. Read the drudge report and find out just what your government is doing to increase internet monitoring – at this time of unprecedented open communications.

What a joke, as if you know me “Poorsarah”. I do know that anytime an article on this website is linked on Drudge there are plenty of these kinds of right-wing comments going on from people who don’t usually comment on this site.

So yes, many people of different political persuasions read Drudge, I am one of them, but the right wing fanatics are the ones that comment on here when there is a link about some Hollywood type that the right-wingers don’t like, and then they add in all of their rants about how bad television is.

It’s so predictable and we can always tell when there has been a Drudge link, because when there isn’t a link on Drudge these comments are civil and on-topic. And just because I don’t agree with the likes of you and your rants doesn’t make me a liberal.

Christine and Gary’s fates will be decided on whether CBS wants to open a 4th hour to comedies or not. They certainly have the strength and depth in their sitcoms to do it, but not really a whole lot of real-estate. Oh, the problems CBS has…

CT’s numbers were pretty poor, and they seem to be fading more as the season wears on. In the fall, MF and CT were very close, but the gap is huge now. I really don’t think that ABC will keep it in the timeslot next season, even if it does own the show, because MF is too strong of a lead-in not to try to launch a new comedy behind it (or strengthen The Middle). I think that CT is going to be next season’s Better Off Ted, in that ABC will probably just burn off the episodes after it fails without a cushy lead-in.

  • Craig

I don’t know how the show could have such a low rating. According to the headline in DrudgeReport, 4,370,000 million people were watching. I figured that would be 4,370,000,000,000 people, greater than the entire earth’s population. How can that be? Maybe someone was double-counting?

Cant we just take all the political talk to the sites it belongs on (Drudge, Huffington Post, etc.) The political back and forth doesn’t belong here on a site meant for people that are interested in tv ratings. Stop trolling here, but if you must post your agenda’s on this site, do it on the cable news posts where it’s at least slightly relevant to the post’s topic! As a daily reader of this site it really bugs me (and I’m sure many of the regular readers here feel the same) that you come here from a political website and think that it’s all about politics here. I have news for you…IT’S NOT! Most of us come here to see the ratings and converse about how we think things are going in the world of Television, not politics!

  • Frank

Actually Tommy is right. Its off topic here. The only place on this board where it might be acceptable is when we talk politics in regards to a presidential address. Otherwise, its just off topic. I apologize for doing it myself and will stop.

right wingers are funny…”the sky is always falling” with them. pro-life eh?…more like pro-torture..they won’t want babies to die, they just want babies to suffer..after said babies are born into poverty, drugs or unfit parents. After these babies are born..is not the right wingers’ problem anymore. Now right wingers will start complaining when these babies grow up because most will be on welfare, or be drug addicts, and some will even procreate..and the vicious cycle begins again…sometimes the best thing to do is to cut the vicious cycle at abortion.

The Oprah Oscar program was the worst kind of TV. We turned it off it was so bad,

AI is also trash this season as too many sappy stories and not enough singing. But there again there is no talent this year anyway!!

  • Colt

Glad to see that stupid Old Christine show taking a dive. What a waste of time. Same goes for Oprah and Modern Family.

As to Tommy and Sara’s remarks: The stars of many (most) TV shows and movies have chosen to make their livelihood political. There is no escaping politics when the stars themselves bash righ wing conservatives. I am still waiting for some of the loud mouth, liberal stars to leave America as they promised to do some 5 years ago.

Since this is about ratings, I darn sure don’t watch shows that hire radical leftists. I refuse to help bolster their ratings by even tuning them in. You play, you pay with lower ratings.

  • Colt

Brett: “I read the Drudge Report several times a day and I am inclined to agree with Sara. Many of the people making comments here seem to have extremely low IQs as demonstrated by plethora of unintelligent and ultimately meaningless comments being made.

And I would venture a guess that the people ranting about the “libs”, “Atheistic Liberal News and Entertainment Industry”, and those demonstrating typical right wing persecuting syndrome (TRWPS) (everyone is aligned against them because they are the true Americans) are not frequent users of this website. But then again, I got here via the Drudge link too, so who knows”.

ROFLMBO! And you contributed so much intellect here? Did we all miss your comments on ratings? Any comments on ANY of the shows? Oh wait….my bad, you were too busy bashing conservatives and their IQ’s (orlack of). Can you say H-Y-P-O-C-R-I-T-E?

  • Ratt

Ya’ll are still watching TV, wow !!!!

  • Sharon

I agree about it being past Oprah Winfrey’s time…and also Martha Stewart’s. I am a woman in her mid-50′s and they were popular in my prime, and even I don’t watch them anymore. I watch Ellen and Rachael Ray. The Oprah Oscar show did not even have any interesting folks on. Her White House holiday special was so boring and dull and hardly had any “holiday” in it…just interviews w/ the first couple and Oprah gushing. It was totally embarrassing to watch. Same with the Olympics pitch for Chicago – another embarrassment. Oprah, go back to being yourself.

  • Flash

My 93 years on this glorious earth make me suspect that indeed Sara is a liberal!

  • Katie

How did this turn into an ideology discussion? lol. Why the back and forth. Do people not realize for example that many in Hollywood exude the facade of left wing liberlism but behind close doors embrace the economics of George Bush. It’s silly to argue IMO because most of those people are as phony as a 3 dollar bill. Radicals on the left and right are just that radicals and really don’t represent mainsteam America. Sure we all like to soundbyte them but I’d be hard pressed to find anyone I know who agrees with Keith Oberman or Glenn Beck.

Back to ratings, Oprah made a mistake. She should have aired that roger ebert interview during primetime. Of course I didn’t watch so maybe she did. I happen to agree, I used to enjoy her but honestly she’s passee now. She picked a good time to retire lets just hope she stays retired from the airwaves

Liberty Girl honestly I am getting to the point you already arrived at. I watch little TV and only maybe 2 or 3 cable stations while I get 300 channels on UVerse there is nothing really worth watching on cable. And those that are become available online or via DVD at some point. I miss the era of must see TV on NBC and I hear my older siblings talk about how great television used to be with shows like MtM, St.Elsewhere, All in the Family. Cable television has really dilluted originality I think. USA sadly is an example of one show being almost exactly like another. CBS and it’s crime shows in some sense suffers from the same thing. Very sad.

Hopefully, Queen Oprah will continue to fall in the ratings and we can get her off the air.

    WELCOME THE DRUDGETARD OVERLORDS!

PS. Everything is the liberals fault and Drudge is still relevant even though he hasn’t broken any real news since Lewinsky.

  • New Jersey girl

That is still more than Glen Biotch and Bill O’Liely have on their average day!

  • JR

Long way off of Oprah’s numbers for her 1993 Michael Jackson interview. :)

Joe, your TV rating comments are…

Your use of the suffix -tard is an affront to an innocent population.

The relections of your bowels in your john’s toilet water will provide you an image quite similar to that you visualize in your mirror each morning.

PS: Lewinsky was news??? Oh, yeh one forgets where your head is at.
