Great news for In Plain Sight fans (and sure to make White Collar fans breathe easier). Deadline Hollywood reports that USA has picked up In Plain Sight for two additional seasons bringing the show to what will be five seasons.

Note that the season three ratings noted in the link above must be Live+7 numbers or some other form of aggregating the numbers.  They were definitely higher than the Live+SD numbers commonly reported.

I’ve tried getting into this show but no such luck. I think Paul Ben-Victor is way underrated.

  • DrusillaRain

Yay!!! I love this show. Actually, I love USA network in general and watch every single one of their shows. Considering this was one of their lower rated shows I have to think virtually everything else on the network will come back for another season.

  • 0megapart1cle

That's surprising. While I continue to like the show, I think it is stupid for networks to announce multi-season renewals like this for almost any show. Maybe something like True Blood, which is a certified monster hit for HBO, but almost everything else should be renewed on a season to season basis.

Great News! My absolute favorite procedural, slightly ahead of the aging NCIS.

  • Trey05

Great news! Covert Affairs isn't grabbing me so far, so I'm glad that one of my old USA favorites is coming back!

  • Jon

IPS has been performing solidly so a renewal isn't a surprise but I think the question is what shows USA do not renew/cancel as they have to make room for original shows like the upcoming Facing Kate, my money's on Psych or Law & Order: Criminal Intent or even both.

Royal Pains should get a pickup as should Covert Affairs as they have been performing well.

Well, they could always cut the extra NCIS at 9pm on Wednesdays. Then they could double up on original shows all 3 nights.

  • Bruce_F

I wouldn't immediately take this as a positive sign if I were a White Collar fan. IPS is probably cheaper to make out in New Mexico than White Collar is in New York, especially with all their location shoots. I'd have to guess USA expects more out of Collar than it does IPS.

  • Bruce_F

As much as I'd like to see Sarah Shahi in a series on a regular basis again, the mediator concept of her show seems really mundane for USA. I'm hoping Facing Kate's finished product turns out better than the concept reads.

On a guess, you're wrong about that. But, alas, all we can do is guess. White Collar is produced by Fox Television Studios which has a reputation for really keeping costs down, plus USA is not licensing the show for its full cost. The downside though is there's no upside for them with DVD, international licensing, etc.

In Plain Sight is produced by Universal, and that is probably an “all in the family” advantage since USA is owned by NBC Universal)

  • SVUnCI

I don't think thatwould get rid of Psych, but L&O: CI is on the bubble. But I think that USA anticipated L&O: CI's drop in numbers, with the two principle character of the show leaving on the same episode, some people (myself included) may feel a little animosity towards that. I think that since Sundays are wide open, and given that they have had success with Sunday night dramas, they might stick Facing Kate there.

  • Bruce_F

I was unaware of how thrifty Fox TV Studios are. As far as DVD sales go, do ANY of USA's original programs do well in DVD sales? I'm not very knowledgeable about such things but I'd be interested to know.

  • Jon

Isn't Burn Notice produced by Fox? It does great but USA don't own it like their other shows with the exception of White Collar.

Fox is the only studio that USA has shows from outside of Universal, you don't see pilots or series from ABC Studios, Warner Bros, Sony Pictures or CBS Studios for some reason.

I think White Collar is safe for at least another season, it's performing well considering it's against a lot of cable competition.

  • DonJ1973

Similar to Burn Notice & USA's deal with FOX I have to assume to Universal Cable offered USA a discount if they ordered more than 1 season. Plus, it helps that IPS is shot in New Mexico and has only 3 series regulars (Mary, Fred Weller and Paul Ben-Victor)

  • http://tvbythenumbers.com Robert Seidman

Jon, yes, Burn Notice is Fox Television Studios produced too.

Bruce: I don't think any of the USA originals do HUGE DVD numbers, but if you feel like doing the work (and it is some work) you can look up the release dates of the DVDs and then track down some estimates of DVD sales at the-numbers.com (no relation).

I'm really surprised by this, i thought for sure it was a goner. Honestly, I thought this season was a huge disappointment. They didn't use the supplementary characters enough and basically turned it into a straightforward procedural. I'm not sure what the plans are for Steven Weber next season, but maybe if he joins the cast it could spark some life in the show, otherwise I may not bother watching it anymore. The show was better when Mary had more drama at home.

True. They do not make tons of money on DVD sales. I checked “Closer” that should be very similar to USA originals. “Closer” made approximately $1M in its first week and then went of the chart in week 2(cut-off $0.5M).

Psych pulls in lower ratings than the NCIS repeat that airs before it on most weeks, if that does not put it on the bubble no USA is on the bubble

  • DonJ1973

I find it funny that there are 2 different sets of IPS fans. I read alot of comments from people who were disappointed in season 3 because it focused too much on the cases and not enough on Mary's personal life with her Mom, Brandi and Raph. Then there were those who bitched about Mary's personal life and thought it made the show annoying and hoped they would focus more on the cases and witnesses. I thought season 3 was good because it focused more on the cases and we also got inside the head of Mary. It did have flaws though as there were multiple episodes that were really dull.

I am glad usa renewed IPS for two more years. Now I know I have burn notice and IPS for atlease two more years. I still hope psych is renewed. I actually really like it.

  • yankeesrj12

Yayyy!! I'm guessing these will be the final two seasons, but I am thrilled! I for sure thought In Plain Sight would be cancelled!

  • http://profiles.yahoo.com/u/NYH7CKQPWBXJCZHFV4ZHZUZYRY Stephen

Could the numbers reflect several airrings same week?

  • CapitalistInfidel

I'm with you on that! The whole family drama was annoying!

  • PennNova

I used to think IPS would be the first USA to get canceled (out of the new crop of shows). However this past season Psych's ratings (I think) took a hit. I like Psych but since it's now USA's oldest show, and since it's ratings have fallen some, it may now be the show mostly likely to get canceled (if USA does cancel a show this year).

Nice, I've never seen this show but always thought it looked good.

  • jpmd

I find it strange that folks are complaining about season 3, even though the should have known exactly what was in store, since there were articlles upon articles about the 'new' direction the show was taking!
Personally, I loved it – I had more than enough with all the family nonsense. Mary's personal life was given just the right amount of air time, and the story lines finally dealt more and more with the subject matter. Great year: keep it up !

  • Trey05

Funny, I thought there was still too much family this year. Or maybe the family stuff just wasn't that great so it felt like a lot.

I'm glad Jinx moved out, but I didn't care about her dancing career or all her missed vacations. And I really didn't care about Brandi and the long-lost half-brother. I think they need to keep the family around to some extent, but should use them more wisely and/or spread the love a bit and explore Marshall's and Stan's backgrounds more instead of focusing solely on the Shannon family.

  • cimmer

Hurray. That's good news and interesting. I wonder what the can't go below point is for USA? I wonder if it helps that cable 'seasons' are shorter than broadcast seasons?

  • Rondrews

I enjoy IPS and am encouraged by it's renewal, but I have to wonder about the ratings they used. Is the USA Network using Live+7 and not Live+SD to make decisions regarding their shows or are these Deadline Hollywood's numbers? Are other networks using the same ratings or are the rating criterias different by network? How about syndication, what kind of rating methodology are they using?

  • http://twitter.com/steph4444 steph

YES!!! Thanks, you made my day :)

Interesting comments here…I guess everyone has their own pet USA shows. I JUST got into IPS this summer, so I’m glad to hear I’ll get to enjoy it a bit longer. I love most of USA’s stuff, including White Collar, Psych & Burn Notice, but I never ever cared about any of the L&O stuff. At all.
Pysch may seem to have low ratings, but I guarantee people are watching online (including me). And they are on fire this season!
I sort of thought part of the whole charm of having a cable network meant there wasn’t as much drama about cancellations, anyway. All the shows seem to have a following of some sort; is it really as big of a hustle & turn over as the basic networks?
