Heroes Season 3

And True Blood still has a bit of bite.

Heroes was the top TV show DVD seller for the week ending September 6, 2009, selling 296,170 units and earning an estimated $11.1 million in revenue its first week.   In unit totals, that’s down from season two’s DVD set which sold 391,899 units and had estimated sales, but because season 3 had a full allotment of episodes versus season two’s strike shortened version, it costs more.  That may have contributed to a decrease in unit sales, but it actually pumped up the revenue figures for this year.   Last year’s first week had less revenue — $9.8 million –even though it sold more units.

Heavy rotation on USA Network helping NCIS & House DVD Sales?

Posted on 09 September 2009 by Robert Seidman

NCIS Season 6

I know Bill already posted about the DVD sales for the week ending August 30, but I thought there was a lot more to say about the weekly sales for the week ending August 30 (chart again included below).

First, though Smallville sold fewer units than House, Smallville was the #1 TV show in dollar sales for the week with almost$6.7 million.  An impressive feat for a show on the CW.   Smallville’s almost 183,000 units and $6.7 million were down from last year’s seventh season debut on DVD which sold more than 212,000 units and made over $8 million in its first week.  It’s not quite apples-to-apples because last year Smallville debuted on September 9, and this year it came out on August 25.

Meanwhile House’s season five debut on DVD with over 223,000 units and over $6 million and sales was up over last year’s season four’s first week sales when it sold over 167,000 units and made $5.5 million.  Also not quite apples-to-apples, since last year House was released a week earlier.    But if there was any positive impact for House in terms of the marathons on USA Network, it falls into the category of “Pssh, you ain’t seen nothin’ yet.”

The real “wow” for me was with NCIS, which was released during the same week this year as it was last year. First week sales of the sixth season of NCIS beat first week sales of season five by more than 100%, both in unit sales (126,506 units this year vs. 54, 991 last year) and revenue ($4.49 million vs. $2.11 million).

It’s hard (ok, impossible) for us to quantify  exactly what impact the heavy rotation of NCIS on USA Network played in the increases.  And I should probably note that outside of some special episodes (the backdoor pilot for NCIS: Los Angeles), none of the season six episodes have begun airing on USA Network yet.

Indeed, viewing of NCIS’s sixth season on CBS was up over season five to record levels for the series, though nowhere close to 100%.   It’s reasonable to conclude that the heavy rotation on USA hasn’t hurt DVD sales, and has probably only helped.  Either way, 100% increases for first week sales year over year is impressive.

NCIS’ first week sales this year were greater than its first two week’s sales last year (82,751 units, $3.2 million in sales).

House Leads DVD sales in big TV week; True Blood Sales Increase

Posted on 08 September 2009 by Bill Gorman

House on Fox, Tuesdays at 8pm

In another week with a lot of new TV show DVD releases,  House lead the pack in unit sales (223,000), with Smallville in second place (183,000). Dexter, last week’s leader fell to #6.

After 15 weeks, the first season of True Blood is has now (on a revenue basis) moved up to the 9th best selling DVD of the season. No other TV shows are in the top 50 overall for the year. And although its far below its initial levels, this week’s sales were 28% above last weeks.

Also launching DVD sales this week were NCIS, One Tree Hill, Scrubs, and  WWE: The Rise and Fall of WCW.

Dexter tops DVD sales in big TV week; True Blood Hangs On

Posted on 31 August 2009 by Bill Gorman

Dexter Season 3, Sundays on Showtime at 9pm

In a week with 4 high profile new releases, Showtime’s Dexter lead the new pack of TV DVD sellers with nearly double the unit sales (298,000) of second place The Simpsons (167,000). The difference in the dollar volumes is a bit perplexing though. Dexter’s price point ($34.99 on Amazon, $4353 list) is nearly the same as  The Simpsons ($31.99 Amazon, list $50) but it beat The Simpsons in dollar volume by only 14%.

Also new for the week, but well back in third was Gossip Girl, and in fourth close behind was Sons of Anarchy.

This was a big week in particular for TV show DVD sales. Those 4 new releases were all in the top 7 DVD sellers for the week.

After 14 weeks, the first season of True Blood continues to hang onto the weekly list and shows no sign of going away anytime soon. It nearly steady from last week with 38,000 units sold. On a revenue basis True Blood moved up to the 10th best selling DVD of the season.  The only other TV show that was the top 50 was 24, which just this week dropped off the annual top 50 list.

Family Guy and Battlestar Galactica both lost sales rapidly from last week and look likely to be ending their run on the list of weekly sales we see.

Fans still bleeding their wallets:True Blood tops weekly DVD sales

Posted on 24 August 2009 by Robert Seidman

The amazing story of success for the first season of True Blood on DVD continues.  For the week ending August 16, 2009,  True Blood was the top selling TV show DVD.  It was a slow week without many new releases, but still, True Blood raked in an additional $1.59 million and is approaching $46 million in sales.

Jason-Stackhouse-True-Blood

On a revenue basis True Blood is the 11th best selling DVD of the season.  The only other TV show in the top 50 is 24, which is now #50 (and falling, and the list we see ends at 50, so…) with $18.184 million in sales.

90210’s first season DVD was released during the week , but did not make the top 30 we see.  But Mad Men, after falling off the list for a few weeks made a comeback and had the week’s second best sales for a TV show with $1.17 million.

Battlestar Galactica is running out of steam as far as staying on the list we see, but was still on the list with about $1.1 million in weekly sales. Last week’s top TV show DVD, The Flight of the Conchords – The Complete Second Season hung around for an additional $925K.

On a unit basis, Conchords was the week’s best selling TV show DVD, but it costs less than the other DVDs. Conchords is currently $19.49 on Amazon, True Blood has a list price of $60, though Amazon is selling it for $34.99 and Mad Men lists at $50 and is going for $32.99 on Amazon.

Family Guy – Volume 7 was also back on the list with $1.015 million in sales.
