The second season of HBO’s Flight of the Conchords topped TV show DVDs for the week ending August 9, 2009.  Battlestar Galactica’s unit sales fell by about 66%, but was still on the list, while Dollhouse, Psych and Robot Chicken fell off the list.

Battlestar Galactica sells more DVDs than Dollhouse; True Blood still biting

Posted on 11 August 2009 by Robert Seidman

Battlestar Galactica

Perceptions sometimes get clouded by various rooting interests, and I saw a lot of  “Dollhouse Season One is on top of Amazon pre-order list!” chatter, but  didn’t see anyone chiming in about Battlestar Galactica season 4.5.   That’s not particularly surprising when you consider that everyone knows BSG’s fate, but a lot of fans of Dollhouse and lovers of all things Whedon are not sure what’s in store for Dollhouse beyond the current order of 13 episodes.

Dollhouse – Season One came in second for the week among the TV show DVDs, in both sales in total units in its first week of release.  Number one Battlestar Galactica – Season 4.5, also in its first week of release, bested Dollhouse by a wide margin.   BSG sold over $5.5 million worth of DVDs on over 173,000 units, while Dollhouse sold $1.8 million on over 67,000 units.

If Dollhouse’s chances for a back nine pickup or season 3 hinge on big DVD sales (and I’m not saying that they do), things don’t look  great after week one.   The typical trend is that the first week’s sales are the largest.  For additional comparisons: Last week, Psych, in its first week sold over 69,000 units and earned $2.251 million. A couple of weeks ago  Mad Men sold nearly 100,000 in its first week before falling out of the top 30 we see on a weekly basis.  True Blood, sold over 500,000 units in its first week, and over 175,000 in its second week.

After falling out of the top 30 the previous week, True Blood climbed back in for the week ending August 2, with over 44,000 units and after 11 weeks of release has sold over $42 million worth on over 1.2 million units.

So far this year, only two DVD shows have earned more than $17 million in revenue. The aforementioned True Blood and 24, which has sold $17.6 million worth in 11 weeks.

Update: Sorry Torchwood fans! I forgot to include the data for Torchwood: Children of Earth either above or in the chart below.  But it sold $601,944 worth on 41,542 units in its first week.

Psych, Monk and Pushing Daisies lead TV Show DVD sales

Posted on 04 August 2009 by Robert Seidman

Quite a week, lots of new shows released on DVD in the newest list.  Mad Men, which led all TV shows for the week ending July 19, was pushed off the charts we see (top 30) by the week ending July 26.  Perhaps it will make a comeback next week.

Phenomenal seller True Blood marks its first week off the chart since it was released, though we can see that it sold around an additional 12,000 units. A very impressive run that’s pushing $41 million in revenue.

Psych – The Complete Third Season and Monk – Season Seven led all TV show DVD sales for the week ending July 26, followed by Pushing Daisies: The Complete Second Season (per RJ in the comments, Pushing Daisies 52,514 units for season two was up from the first week sales of PD: Season 2 is up from the 45,769 Season 1 in its first week), but with the kind of numbers that make it seem unlikely they will be hanging around on the list for long.   Mad Men sold over 94,000 units the previous week — more than any show on the list this week — and now its off the list.   Also on this week’s list were Prison Break – The Final Break, SpongeBob Squarepants and Robot Chicken — Star Wars Episode II.

Like True Blood Weeds, Entourage, Stargate Atlantis and 24 also fell off the list.

Next week, it’s the apocalypse!  We’ll see the results for the week ending August 2, which will include…Dollhouse!

Coincidentally, to celebrate their return to TV this Friday, we are having contests that include giving away this week’s top TV show DVD sellers, Monk and Psych.

Mad Men Leads DVD Sales In First Week; True Blood Sees Sales Rise

Posted on 27 July 2009 by Bill Gorman

Emmy darling Mad Men was also the DVD sales darling its first week in release with nearly 100,000 units sold. Although, that’s not a particularly impressive first week total. True Blood and 24 both had much more impressive first week sales.

I’d never heard of The State, the #2 DVD seller for the week.  It aired on MTV about 15 years ago, way past my MTV viewing days.

2009’s TV show DVD sales leader, True Blood: The Complete First Season, saw its unit sales increase 8% to just under 50,000 for the week. It keeps hanging on and is now the #15 DVD seller by revenue for the year. 24 is the only other TV show on the year’s top 50 at #45.

Four other titles are near the bottom of the overall top 30 DVD sellers and could all be in the last week we will see their sales information. Weeds – Season Four has sold 414,000 units, and has been on our list 5 weeks out of the 7 its been on sale. Family Guy – Volume 7 has sold 406,480 in 5 weeks . Stargate Atlantis – The Complete Fifth Season unit sales dropped to 38,988 in its third week.  In its third week, Entourage – The Complete Fifth Season unit sales fell 47% to 37,164.

Even though it was the first week of sales for ER – The Complete Eleventh Season it didn’t appear on the top 30 seller list that we see. NHL: Stanley Cup 2008-2009 Champions: Pittsburgh Penguins fell off the list after only one week.

Next week we will see the opening week DVD sales numbers for Monk – Season Seven, Prison Break – The Final Break, Psych: The Complete Second Season, Pushing Daisies – The Complete Second Season, and Stargate SG-1: Children of the Gods.

NHL Stanley Cup 2008-9 DVD Opens At #2 For TV DVD Sales

Posted on 20 July 2009 by Bill Gorman

The NHL: Stanley Cup 2008-2009 Champions: Pittsburgh Penguins opened at the #2 position for TV show DVD unit sales. I’m confident it was the #1 seller across western Pennsylvania. It will be interesting to see how long it lasts on our list.

In its second week, Entourage – The Complete Fifth Season was still the #1 DVD unit seller among TV shows, but its numbers fell 58% from its first week. It may not be on the list we see much longer.

This year’s reigning TV show DVD leader, True Blood: The Complete First Season, saw its unit sales drop just 11% to just under 45,000 for the week, and has sold over 1.1 million units in its 8 weeks on the market.

Weeds – Season Four popped back onto the list for the third time. It’s sold nearly 380,000 units, and has been on our list 4 weeks out of the 6 its been on sale. Family Guy – Volume 7 has sold 366,000 in 4 weeks and soon may be popping on and off the list like Weeds. Stargate Atlantis – The Complete Fifth Season unit sales dropped almost 68% in its second week. This is likely its last week on our chart.

Eastbound & Down: The Complete First Season dropped off the list after only one week. Next week DVD sales begin for ER – The Complete Eleventh Season.

Entourage, Stargate Atlantis, And Eastbound & Down Open Atop TV Show DVD sales

Posted on 14 July 2009 by Bill Gorman

First, an important note. The-Numbers.com has restated some of their earlier sales estimates for TV show DVD sales. For example, they had originally estimated that through June 28, True Blood had sold 1.188 million units, now their revised estimate through June 28 is 1.021 million units. There were adjustments to other show’s numbers as well. I will not be going back to adjust numbers in my earlier posts though, refer directly to the-numbers.com for their revisions.

In its opening week, Entourage – The Complete Fifth Season sold over 167,000 units to lead TV show DVD sales estimates for the week ending July 5, 2009. A nice number, but compare that to the estimated 516,000 units for the first week of True Blood in its first week.

Reasonably close behind in its opening week was Stargate Atlantis – The Complete Fifth Season which began with just over 100,000 units sold. The third TV show to begin sales for the week, Eastbound & Down: The Complete First Season sold an estimated 58,000 units.

Huge seller True Blood is still on the list, with sales drifting down a modest 26% to just over 50,000 units sold on the week. It may only have another week or two on the top 30 list we see, but we will still be able to track its progress on the year’s top DVD seller list.

Family Guy – Volume 7 was just behind True Blood for the week, with an estimated 48,000 units.

Weeds – Season Four fell off the list after 4 weeks on sale.

The-Numbers.com notes that no new TV shows will begin DVD sales this week.

True Blood Nearing 1.2 Million DVDs Sold

Posted on 07 July 2009 by Bill Gorman

After 6 weeks of DVD sales, True Blood: The Complete First Season is nearing 1.2 million DVDs sold. It’s still the leading TV show DVD seller for 2009 and its week to week sales decline was still a modest 18% suggesting that it will remain a strong seller for quite some time.

Family Guy – Volume 7 was still the top TV show DVD seller for the week with 134,000 units sold and over 400,000 for its first two weeks.

USA ratings star Burn Notice – Season Two fell off the DVD sales list we see after only one week.

But Weeds – Season Four returned to the list in its fourth week (after being off for its third week) selling over 36,000 units.

Two other TV shows that began selling DVDs this week didn’t appear on the top 30 list were:  The Girls Next Door – Season Five, and Reba – The Complete Sixth Season.

Next week DVD sales begin for Entourage – The Complete Fifth Season, Parker Lewis Can’t Lose – The Complete First Season, and Stargate Atlantis – The Complete Fifth Season.

Family Guy – Vol. 7 Sells 274,000 DVDs Its First Week

Posted on 29 June 2009 by Bill Gorman

Family Guy – Volume 7 debuts on the top of the TV Show DVD sales chart with nearly 274,000 units sold in its first week, translating into sales of over $7.5 million.

Very strong TV show DVD seller True Blood: The Complete First Season saw its weekly unit sales drift down 21% to a still impressive 107,000 units, topping the 1 million unit mark after 5 weeks in release. It’s the only TV show in the top 50 DVDs sold for 2009.

USA ratings stalwart Burn Notice – Season Two rang in its first week with sales of almost 91,000 units and $3 million.

Three shows on the DvD sales list last week fell off Weeds – Season Four (after 2 weeks)The Shield – The Complete Seventh Season (after one week) and Prison Break (after 2 weeks).

Two other TV shows that began selling DVDs this week that didn’t appear on the top 30 list were Everwood – The Complete Second Season, and Saving Grace – Season Two. All we know is they sold fewer than 72,800 units for the week.

Two TV shows will begin selling DVDs next week: The Girls Next Door – Season Five, and Reba – The Complete Sixth Season. I wouldn’t be surprised if neither make the top 30 and we don’t see any numbers for them.
