Nielen TV Ratings Age Demographics: J-J-J-Jive Talking

I imagine this will be my last post on the subject of the Nielsen Age-Demographics, particularly the 18-49 demo for a while.  Besides just posting the weekly numbers, that is.  But I wanted to write a more or less definitive “and that’s that” piece, so here it is.

Most of the time my writing is simply me thinking out loud on a blog.  I don’t claim to be a good writer – my abuses of both the apostrophe and the parenthesis are epic, but hey, at least I don’t go wild with the exclamation points. 

For most of the time since we launched this site in September, I have struggled with the age demographics because it wasn’t ever absolutely clear to me what is what, and how all the broadcast networks and advertisers approached the age demographics.  But it’s finally crystal clear to me exactly what goes on, at least right now.  It turns out there is more than one answer.  The age demographics do in fact matter to the advertisers, but former regular commenter Rena Moretti also had it right, they don’t matter – at least not as much — with the likes of CBS.

Top Broadcast 25-54, January 21-27: American Idol

With an audience of 15.50 million adults 25-54, Fox’s Tuesday American Idol had the largest audience (as well as the second largest on Wednesday) in the age group for primetime shows in the week of January 21-27, 2008.

Top Broadcast 25-54, January 14-20: NFC Champ.

An audience of 27.50 million adults 25-54 watched Fox’s NFC Championship Game, more than any other primetime show for the week of January 14-20, and the most for any show so far this season. The season premiere of American Idol was watched by 17.62 million adults 25-54.

Top Broadcast 25-54, January 7-13; Fox NFL Post

22.01 million adults 25-54 watched Fox’s NFL Sunday Post Game for the few minutes it ran into primetime, more than any other primetime show for the week of January 7-13, 2008. Among shows that started in primetime as well as ended, CBS’s AFC Divisional Playoff between the Patriots and Jaguars was tops with 15.64 million adults 25-54.

Top Broadcast 25-54, Dec 31 – Jan 6: NBC Sat. NFL

In a football dominated week, 13.56 million adults 25-54 watched NBC’s NFL Playoff Game between Jacksonville and Pittsburgh on Saturday night, more than any other primetime show for the week of December 31, 2007 – January 6, 2008.

Top Broadcast 25-54 December 24-30, NBC Sunday NFL

8.20 million adults 25-54 watched NBC’s Sunday Night Football game between the Titans and the Colts more than any other primetime show for the week of December 24-30.

If you want to get picky, 14.04m adults 25-54 watched the combined simulcast on NBC and CBS of the Saturday night game between the Patriots and the Giants. We don’t have demo data available for the NFL Network portion of the viewership. Football dominated the 25-54 ratings list, with 9 of the top 20 shows.

7.69 million adults 25-54 watched CBS’ NFL Sunday Post Gun show for the 4 minutes it ran into primetime, more than any other primetime show for the week of December 17-23. Among shows that started in primetime as well as ended, NBC’s Sunday Night Football was #1 with 7.18 million adults 25-54.

10.75 million adults 25-54 watched Fox’s NFL Sunday Post Game for the 5 minutes it ran into primetime, more than any other primetime show for the week of December 10-16. Among shows that started in primetime as well as ended, CBS’ CSI was #1 with 9.23 million adults 25-54.
