Dollhouse Had Largest Share of Viewing From DVRs, Did That Save The Show?

We haven’t had our full complement of DVR viewing data for quite some time, but today we’ve got the data for the entire 2008-9 broadcast prime-time season (9/22/08-5/20/09).

Fox’s surprise show renewal Dollhouse had the largest share of its viewing by DVR for the 2008-9 season; 41% for the adults 18-49 demo and 32% for viewership overall. One of Fox’s public reasons for renewing Dollhouse was its high share of DVR viewing. Since I think the real reason Dollhouse was renewed was that its future budget was reduced to reality show levels, and the DVR viewing was just public posturing, I don’t expect to hear any more about it from them.

We’re hoping our regular DVR data flow resumes soon, but until then, just another nugget of adults 18-49 DVR viewing data. Here are the Top 10 shows ranked by their DVR viewing in the adults 18-49 demo for the week of May 11-17, 2009.

The Thursday season finale of Grey’s Anatomy just edged out Tuesday’s American Idol to become the most DVR viewed show of the week for adults 18-49. Once again, Wednesday’s “results” Idol was far less DVR viewed than the Tuesday “competition” episode both in rating increase and in % viewing by DVR.

Interesting that the season finale of Biggest Loser, which was #4 on the week for 18-49 Live+SD viewing doesn’t appear in the the top 10 most DVR’d shows. Presumably the results of weight loss are best viewed live. Again, 24 is heavily DVR’d, appearing at #9, when it’s not even in the top 20 for 18-49 Live+SD viewing.

American Idol’s Wednesday Show Not As DVR Viewed As Tuesday’s

Posted on 02 June 2009 by Bill Gorman

It’s been almost a month since we’ve seen DVR viewing data that lets us do our calculations and publish our regular tables. We hope the flow of data resumes soon, but cannot predict when it will.

In the mean time, I can offer but the tiniest DVR data nugget.

Here are the Top 10 shows ranked by their DVR viewing in the adults 18-49 demo for the week of May 4-10, 2009.

As you’d expect, the top shows for adults 18-49 are well represented in the top DVR’d shows, as American Idol’s Tuesday show for the week tops this list and is #2 in the Live+SD list. What’s interesting to me about the list is that American Idol’s Wednesday show  was only #6 in the DVR viewing list while being #1 in the Live+SD viewing for the week. People must want to see the “vote off” live.

The other shows on this list that appear well above their Live+SD rank for the week are 30 Rock, which jumps from #30 to #10 and 24 which jumps from #21 to #8.
