Largest DVR Audience For A Cable Show We Have Recorded
Disney’s Camp Rock grabbed big ratings when it first aired, but it was even bigger on DVRs. It had the largest DVR audience for a cable show we have recorded (we began in August 2007) with 2.046 million for its airing the week of June 16-22, 2008.
In Plain Sight remained a cable DVR standout with the largest percentage audience increase with 28.9% for the same week.

For the week of June 9-15, the Most DVR’d Broadcast Prime-time top 20 looks a lot like the top % gainers list. In this case, Hell’s Kitchen also tops the list with 1.979 million DVR viewers.
The shows on this list that didn’t make the top % time-shifted list are not surprisingly mainly CBS shows (because they have larger, older audiences that tend not to DVR as much), Two and A Half Men, NCIS, 48 Hours Mystery, Million Dollar Password and one NBC show Nashville Star.

For the week of June 9-15, Fox’s Hell’s Kitchen topped al broadcast shows in audience % gain by time-shifting (DVR viewing). Its audience increased by 25.8% over the 7.681 million that watched it Live giving it a Live+7 audience of 9.660 million.
However, with far fewer new episodes airing during broadcast prime-time in the summer, the top 20 % time-shifting list is a lot easier to reach with numbers that woudn’t come close during the main broadcast season.
Fox lead all networks with 7 of the top 20 time-shifted shows on a % basis.

In Plain Sight Has 35.6% Increase and 1.3 Million DVR Viewers
For the week of June 9-15, 2008, USA’s rookie In Plain Sight was the top cable time-shifted show with an increase of 35.6% over its Live viewing audience in its Live+7 viewing audience and absolute time-shifted audience size of 1.297 million, both very big numbers for a cable show. The show is not only a cable hit in Live viewing but among DVR viewers as well, who tend to be younger and more affluent. We don’t get demographic data on cable shows, but my guess is that the numbers would be quite good for In Plain Sight.

So You Think You Can Dance led all DVR viewing for the week ending June 8, with Hell’s Kitchen trailing closely behind. As for NBA Finals Game 1 (#17) on the list, I know at least one of the numbers is incorrect and I’d guess that it’s the live plus seven days DVR viewing number. Mysteriously there were slightly fewer viewers for the entire week than there were with the same day DVR viewing. Alas, these are the numbers we received. It’s true that almost 100% of sports programming DVR viewing typically occurs the same day the event airs, but having 104% of it occur the same day is a little unsettling.
Don’t shoot the messenger.
