TV Ratings: CBS Sees Post Super Bowl Boost; The Big Bang Theory Hits Series Highs; Chuck, Castle Drop

Posted on 09 February 2010 by Robert Seidman

Scoreboard CBS FOX ABC NBC Uni CW
Adults 18-49: Rating/Share 4.4/11 4.2/10 3.6/9 1.8/5 1.5/4 1.0/2
Adults 18-34: Rating/Share 3.2/9 3.6/10 3.1/9 1.4/4 1.6/5 1.2/3
Total Viewers (million) 13.34 11.86 11.38 5.11 3.76 2.11

CBS saw a post Super Bowl boost with some season and series highs and it won the night with both overall viewers and adults 18-49.   FOX won the night with adults 18-34, with House turning in the night’s best performance with the youthful adult segment.

The Big Bang Theory hit a 6.0 with adults 18-49, its highest rating ever.   The 5.7 rating for Two and a Half Men was its best in 3 years  — since the last time it aired after the day after the Super Bowl in 2007.

Chuck dropped ~8 percent versus last week and Castle dropped ~17 percent from its last original telecast on January 25.

ABC is playing the “Castle viewers have more money” card in their morning notes, noting:

  • Castle also attracts an advertiser-coveted Upscale audience, with an annual median income of $68,000 for its Adult 18-49 audience (among the highest on broadcast television) and pulling in 22% higher ratings than the norm in homes with $100k+ annual income (index of 122).

The Bachelor continued to be strong for ABC, and was basically flat vs. last week with adults 18-49, while seeing season highs with viewers.  Both House and 24 on FOX were up slightly from last week with adults 18-49.

Accidentally on Purpose, Two and a Half Men and The Big Bang Theory all saw double-digit percentage gains with adults 18-49 versus last week while How I Met Your Mother and CSI: Miami were up slightly.

One Tree Hill and Life Unexpected were basically flat versus last week, though with viewing so small to begin with an 18-49 drop from a 1.0 to a .9 for Life Unexpected winds up as a 10 percent drop.

It looks like Drew Brees’ appearance with Letterman helped the ratings a bit:

  • Conan O’Brien (0.8/3 in 18-49 in local people meters with an encore telecast) trailed CBS’s first-run LATE SHOW (1.3/5) in Nielsen’s 25 local markets with People Meters.

TV Ratings: Saints, Super Bowl XLIV Win the Night; All-Time Most-Watched Program

Posted on 08 February 2010 by Robert Seidman

Scoreboard CBS Uni FOX ABC NBC
Adults 18-49: Rating/Share   1.0/2 0.9/2 0.9/2 0.5/1
Adults 18-34: Rating/Share   1.2/3 0.9/2 0.8/2 0.4/1
Total Viewers (million)   2.49 2.11 3.20 1.70

Update 2: Final viewer numbers and 18-49 breakout for Super Bowl XLIV, the Post Game coverage and Undercover Boss are available in the weekly broadcast top 25 post.

Update: Time Zone adjusted number for Undercover Boss are in, it averaged 38.6 million and was the most-watched post Super Bowl show since 2001.  Super Bowl XLIV destroyed previous Super Bowl viewing records with 106.48 million average viewers and even overtook the series finale of M*A*S*H (105.97 million) as the most-watched program of all-time.

Rather than go with our typical 47 disclaimers about why you can’t use fast national results as an accurate gauge for live events because they are not time zone adjusted, CBS has asked that we just not post any non time zone adjusted numbers for CBS and wait for the time zone adjusted numbers which they hope to have by 1pm ET/10am PT.  Hopefully we will have them shortly thereafter.

Given the magnitude of the event (most-watched television event all year, and perhaps in decades) and that it seems on track to break records once the time zone adjustments are made,  it seemed like a reasonable request to me. I’ll post the CBS numbers as soon as the time zone adjusted numbers are available.  In the meanwhile here is the metered market info on the Super Bowl and Undercover Boss. The numbers for both the Super Bowl and Undercover Boss look to be very good (even in the non-timezone adjusted numbers which I’m not posting per CBS’ request).

The mostly repeat action on the other nets is below.  Kudos to FOX, it figured out a way to schedule ‘Til Death and not have it wind up in last place!

TV Ratings: CBS Wins Friday Again; Two New Hours of Smallville Are Better than One for CW

Posted on 06 February 2010 by Robert Seidman

Scoreboard CBS ABC FOX NBC CW
Rating/Share: Adults 18-49 2.1/7 1.6/5 1.5/5 1.3/4 1.2/4
Total Viewers (million) 9.01 6.23 3.99 5.53 2.77

As is typical, CBS won Friday night.  Both Ghost Whisperer and Medium pulling a 2.2 rating with adults 18-49.  The two hour Smallville “Absolute Justice” special averaged a 1.2 rating with adults 18-49.  The first hour of “Absolute Justice” averaged a 1.1 with adults 18-49 and 2.6 million viewers, with the second hour averaging a 1.3 adults 18-49 rating and nearly 3 million viewers (2.94).  It was Smallville’s best numbers of the season with viewers and adults 18-49, and its best Friday since the last Friday Night Smackdown! aired on the CW in September 2008.

In the post-Dollhouse era, FOX rose to third place for the night getting a particularly (relatively) healthy 1.8 adults 18-49 rating from Kitchen Nightmares.  A House repeat proved stronger than a Law & Order repeat, at least with adults 18-49.

Shark Tank trailed Kitchen Nightmares with adults 18-49, but the 4.66 million average viewers for its season finale were its biggest ever Friday night audience.

The Jay Leno Show spent its final Friday telecast in its usual fashion – a distant third.

Here is the half hour Smallville detail via Marc Berman:

8:00 p.m. – Viewers: 2.64 million (#5), A18-49: 1.1/ 4 (#4)
8:30 p.m. – Viewers: 2.56 million (#5), A18-49: 1.1/ 3 (#4t)
9:00 p.m. – Viewers: 2.86 million (#5), A18-49: 1.2/ 4 (#5)
9:30 p.m. – Viewers: 3.02 million (#5), A18-49: 13/ 4 (#5)

Via the CW:

“A 2-hr SMALLVILLE provided The CW with our best Friday night since Sept 2008 in all key categories, including adults 18-49 (1.2/4), men 18-49 (1.5/5), adults 18-34 (1.1/4), men 18-34 (1.3/5) and total viewers (2.8mil).

In terms of Smallville episodes, this is the highest rated Smallville of the season in total viewers, adults 18-49 (tie) and men 18-49.

Competitively, Smallville ranked #1 from 8-10pm in men 18-49.”

TV Ratings: Human Target Shoots Blank at 8p; Idol, Modern Family Lead Night

Posted on 04 February 2010 by Robert Seidman

Scoreboard FOX CBS ABC Uni NBC CW
Rating: Adults 18-49 5.0/14 3.4/10 2.5/7 1.5/4 1.2/4 0.4/1
Rating: Adults 18-34 3.9/12 2.2/7 2.1/7 1.7/5 1.0/3 0.4/1
Total Viewers (million) 14.29 13.38 6.26 3.78 4.85 .93

In its first appearance on Wednesdays at 8pm, Human Target dropped to a 2.4 adults 18-49 rating.  That’s a 25% drop from last Tuesday at 9pm (3.2 A18-49 rating) when it aired behind American Idol.

I like Human Target And before anyone says, “But if Chuck gets a 2.4, it’s considered to be doing OK!?,”  Chuck isn’t on FOX, it’s on NBC.  If it was on FOX  airing before Idol with a 2.4 adults 18-49 rating we’d be telling you to enjoy it while it lasts…

American Idol’s move to 9pm seemed to hurt it more than the competition (update: though last night Idol was a “Road To Hollywood” special, rather than a regular episode).   Last night Idol averaged a 7.7 rating with the 18-49 crowd and 20.8 million viewers. Last week at 8pm it averaged a 9.1/25 and over 24 million viewers,  and two weeks ago at 8pm it averaged a 9.8 rating with adults 18-49 and 26.7 million viewers in the overnights.   FOX notes that with an extra week of auditions this season, the season 9 auditions have retained 92% of  last year’s Adults 18-49 audience and 94% of Total Viewers.

Modern Family suffered a tiny bit airing opposite Idol, slipping to a 3.9 adults 18-49 rating vs. a 4.1 in its last new episode two weeks ago.  It was still the night’s top scripted show in terms of adults 18-49 rating.

On CBS a Super Bowl commercials special nearly hit a 3.0 rating with adults 18-49 and improved dramatically versus last year.

Super Bowl’s Greatest Commercials compared to last year’s special (on January 31, 2009 at 8PM — of course as one of our observant commenters pointed out, that was a Saturday) was up +50% in both households and adults 25-54 , +45% in adults 18-49  and added +3.28m viewers. It posted its best household and viewers deliveries ever and the best delivery in both adults 25-54 and adults 18-49 since 2007.

Criminal Minds felt the Idol competition a bit more than Modern Family, dropping to a 3.8 from a 4.3 adults 18-49 rating two weeks ago in its last new episode.   With its lead-in impaired, CSI: NY dropped a bit from its last original episode as well, from a 3.7 to a 3.4.

Not much to say about NBC, but for anyone who might wonder why NBC would schedule a repeat during February sweeps, those don’t officially begin until tonight (February 4) and run through March 3.

TV Ratings: CBS Wins Night as The Big Bang Theory Tops All; The Bacherlor Hits Highs; Chuck Steady-ish

Posted on 02 February 2010 by Robert Seidman

Scoreboard CBS FOX ABC NBC Uni CW
Adults 18-49: Rating/Share 4.1/10 3.9/10 3.5/9 1.9/5 1.5/4 1.0/2
Adults 18-34: Rating/Share 2.8/8 3.6/10 3.2/9 1.6/4 1.8/5 1.2/3
Total Viewers (million) 12.74 11.55 10.43 5.01 4.07 2.11

CBS won the night with adults 18-49 and total audience with solid performances out of its two hour comedy block and CSI: Miami.   In a pattern that has been typical for most of the season, The Big Bang Theory led CBS with adults 18-49, while Two and a Half Men was the most-watched program with the broader audience.

FOX topped the night with adults 18-34, with House down around 8% versus last week with adults 18-49 but having its best night with adults 18-34 (where it was the night’s top show) since November.  24 dropped another couple of ticks down to a 3.1 adults 18-49 rating.

The Bachelor continues to grow, and its 4.1 adults 18-49 rating was up about 5 percent versus the previous week and a season high.  From 9p-10p The Bachelor > Jack Bauer.    Castle fans will delight in pretty robust performance for a repeat – the show’s best-ever numbers for a repeat.

Over on NBC, Chuck was down another tenth to a 2.4 rating with adults 18-49 and Heroes managed to climb a tenth, back to a 2.0 adults 18-49 rating.   In its next-to-last Monday airing in prime-time , The Jay Leno Show was hardly on the map with a 1.1 adult 18-49 rating — its worst Monday night performance ever — and less than 4 million viewers..

Life Unexpected held steady in its third week, with the same 1.0 adults 18-49 rating it had last week.   But with CW’s target demographic of women 18-34, it was down another two-tenths to a 1.7 rating in that demographic.

In Late-Night Local People Meters Monday night:

  • Conan O’Brien (0.6/3 in 18-49 in local people meters with an encore telecast) trailed CBS’s first-run LATE SHOW (1.0/4) in Nielsen’s 25 local markets with People Meters.
  • At 12:35 a.m., Jimmy Fallon (0.4/2 in 18-49 in local people meters ) trailed CBS’s LATE LATE SHOW (0.6/4 with an encore telecast).
