Fringe 2009-2010

We don’t hate total viewers. We just don’t think they matter much in terms of the fates of shows.  But then again, not even the 18-49 increases due to DVR viewing really wind up making much difference,  so since fans are interested in the viewer numbers here they are for the week ending October 18,2009.  The first table is based on most absolute DVR viewing (including Live+SD viewing).  The second table are the shows with the largest percentage increases after the same day.

Again, let me say that despite the recent media hoopla, I don’t believe these numbers really make much of a difference in a show’s fate. But I don’t think those 18-49 numbers make any difference in show fates either, so…

Grey’s Anatomy Leads Big DVR Viewing For Thursday 9pm Shows

greys anatomy

The real DVR viewing standout for the week of October 12-18 was Grey’s Anatomy, which not only had the biggest absolute ratings increase of the week from DVR viewing (1.6 ratings points), but the fifth biggest increase on a % basis (32%). Thursday 9pm is crowded with strong shows, and all the broadcast competition (Office, CSI, Supernatural, Fringe, 30 Rock) was in the top 20 for % ratings gained by DVR viewing.

Typically, shows with tiny ratings top the list of biggest % ratings increase from DVR viewing. No different this week, as Melrose Place, with among the weakest new episode ratings on English broadcast for the week, got the biggest % increase. That tiny 0.3 ratings point addition is a big jump in the Live+7 rating over the 0.7 Live+SD rating.

Smallville, Dollhouse Get Big DVR Boosts In Week 3

Thursday, Friday and 10pm shows continue to keep the DVRs spinning. Heroes is the only top 10 % increase show not in those groups.

Among absolute ratings increases for broadcast shows, there was little to surprise us. The two Live+SD top rated scripted shows for the week, Grey’s Anatomy and House were also the biggest absolute ratings gainers after DVR viewing, and in exactly the same amount!
